Join me as we learn kitas for today for
Friday the sixth Torah reading of
Parishes Vesv. Yesterday's Torah reading
we read as Yoseph was brought down to
Egypt sold to the chief butcher and
there he was put in charge and very
successful in everything he did. And
today as we continue from yesterday's
Torah reading where Yoseph was uh
prettyl looking and making and um making
himself look uh very comfortable and
eating wonderful food and was
insensitive to the fact that his father
was agonizing and suffering by missing
his son. God therefore sends upon him
another challenge with the wife of
Potifar.
As we're going to learn today, the wife
of Potifar, she saw by astrological
means that the children of Yoseph, that
Yoseph will have children from her, not
knowing that it would be from her
daughter, but not from her. With this,
as we start this Torah reading, she
tries to seduce Yoseph to be with her.
Verse 7, chapter 39.
And it was immediately after Yoseph
began to beautify himself in many
different ways, showing his
insensitivity
and the master's wife cast his eyes on
cast her eyes on Yoseph and she said,
"Sleep with me."
Any time where we find a terminology
where it says after the following words
means that it's referring to a period of
something which was right before it
[snorts]
and therefore over here it's coming to a
very meaning right next to the event and
it happened in close proximity to the
time of the event that happened before
it. That's why it says right after this
occurrence this started
verse eight.
and he refused. And if you look at the
word, the cancellation on it is the
shallist. Very infrequently do we have
this only about five or six times. Many
times that it is on the word
in any time where there is a struggle
where a person is indecisive of what
they should do. For example, when Lot
and his family were being taken out of
Saddam, in this case as well, we have
and Ysef refused that he was torn. On
one hand, he was caught by the beauty of
the wife of Potifer. But on the other
hand, as we see, he is struggling not to
follow what Potifer's wife is enticing
him to do.
And he refused.
And he said to his master's wife,
"My master does look, my master does not
concern himself with what's going on in
the house.
And whatever he has,
he put me in charge and he entrusted in
my care. Verse n
there's nobody greater than me or having
more authority than me in this house
and he has not withheld anything from me
besides you except yourself
because you are his wife. the
and how can I do commit such a great
wrong
and I will sin and it's also a sin
before God.
Why was it also a sin before God? So
Rashi explains
because
one of the seven laws was adultery and
therefore this would be considered a sin
in front of God as well for her.
[snorts]
Verse 10.
And as she persisted and although she
continued to talk to Yseph every single
day
and he did not listen to her
to be with her
and to listen to her that he should be
with her. Rashi says
over here she even wanted just regular
just to be with her even if it's not
going to mean to be in intimate.
even without being intimate with her and
even that he would not be with her
and to be with her. Sashi continues to
say what does it mean to sleep with her
and to be with her in the world to come
in purgatory. And as the balaturator
says, if you look at the word lea is the
same numerical value as in purgatory in
ginam [snorts]
and he recognize the punishment that
will come because of this of being with
her.
Verse 10
and verse 11
and it was that day
and it happened to be a certain day.
What does it mean a certain day? was a
specific holiday as we'll soon see in
Rashi [snorts]
and she and he came to the home
to do his work like an ordinary day
and none of the members of the home were
there
were present in the home.
So Rashi explains what does it mean it
was like this day? What does it mean
this day? Which day was it? The Torah
doesn't tell us meaning to say
it came to a specific day a regular not
an ordinary day which was a day of
joyfulness and a day of jubilation on
their part.
It was considered a holiday on their
part of the Egyptians.
They all went to their the idolatry to
the place of idolatry. Omra the wife of
said
there's no better day for me to be with
Yoseph this day. And that's why she
decided to be with Yseph. The problem
was how was she going to tell the other
people why she's not going with them to
the uh house of idolatry?
She told the people of her home,
I'm not feeling well.
Therefore, I can't join you in your fun
to going to the church whatever it was
at the time. Lastly, it's to do his
work. What was his work? And over here,
we see a dispute between the two sages
between
one says
he came to do his work which he was
hired for that he used to do every
single day.
One says
he really intended that finally after
the pestering that she was doing him and
every single day nagging him, he was
willing to be with her.
But at the last moment
the last moment he saw the image of his
father and with that they reminded
himself and his father told him you want
to be amongst your brothers to be part
of the complete Jewish nation. How can
you do such a thing? as it's described
in the track date of Sata
explains two interpretations here. What
does it mean that he saw the image of
his father? One is that he saw the image
of his father that even though he was
succumbed to the physical beauty of the
wife of Potifar however when he saw the
image of his father he realized the
divine beauty that exists within every
Jew and because of that he realized that
the physical beauty is not an entity and
he was able to overcome and that's why
it says afterwards he ran outside he was
able to exit that space where physical
beauty meant something to a place of
divine beauty where the then the
physical beauty was a non- entity and
the reb goes on They even further
explained that the very moment that he
saw the image of his father, the image
of his father was like the image of
Adarish. Yakov looked like Marisharish.
The garra says and he remembered his
purpose on this world and he realized
and he told himself he was able to
understand and say how can I ruin my
purpose of being in this world going
back to Adam that every human being has
a divine purpose in this world just by a
moment or a fleeting moment of seduction
of the wife of potif.
And what happened was verse 12.
She grabbed him by his garment
[snorts]
saying, "Sleep with me."
He left his garment in her hand and he
ran out and he fled and he went outside.
Verse 13.
When she saw
that he left his garment and holding it
in her hand
and that he fled outside.
Verse 14. So now she begins to make up a
story and framing Yseph
and she called to the members of her
household and she said
see what happened.
They brought to us a Hebrew manu
to mock us.
He came to me to be with me the but I
cried out loudly. Verse 14 Rashi
explains that this is a shortened verse
of the of what she said.
This is a condensed version of what
happened. What did she mean to say? They
brought to him. She doesn't say who
brought this Hebrew man here.
She's saying about her husband. You
brought this Hebrew man here and look
what he did. I why does she call him I
because that's the way at the time the
Jewish people were called because
Abraham was on the was in the other side
of the river
a from the children of A
verse 15
and
when he heard
that I raised my voice
and I yelled I screamed
he left his garment by me
and he ran and he fled and he went side.
Verse 16.
And she said these words, the same lines
as she was telling everybody else, she
told to she said to everybody
this fellow um that means when her man
when her husband came home, she said the
same thing [snorts]
to her husband. Verse 16.
And she left her garment by her until
her husband came home. Until the master
came home. Verse 16,
which master the master of which was her
husband. Verse 17.
And she spoke to her husband the
following words. The same thing that she
told everybody else.
Lamer saying,
"This Hebrew servant that you brought
came to me.
that you brought over here to mock us
and therefore trying to seduce me.
Rashi explains verse 17
that this Jewish slave that you have,
this fellow, this Jewish slave that you
brought, did you bring him over here to
seduce me that you brought to the home?
And she turned around the whole story.
Instead of she being the one that was
seducing him, she made it as if he was
seducing her.
Verse 18.
And it was when I raised my voice and I
yelled out and he left his garments by
me and he fled outside
and was when her m when the master heard
these words the words of his wife
that she spoke to him saying
these are kinds of things is what your
servant has done
and he was furious. verse 19.
What does it mean when his when the
master heard the words generally for the
person speaking to me hear what they're
saying though because he said this as a
spec she said it to him at a specific
time which would then infuriate him even
more. She said it
she said it when she was intimate with
her husband.
Therefore she says just like these words
is what your husband is what your
servant did
words of seduction. This is what he
tried to do to me what we are presently
with together.
And he continues to say the verse tells
us then verse 20
and therefore the master of Yseph Ysef's
master took a hold of him and he put him
and he placed him in the prison
the place where the prisoners are
incarcerated
and he remained in that prison.
If you look at the word in the actual
words here, assur as we mentioned
before, there's words in the Torah that
are written one way and read a different
way. The word ass is written with a v
but pronounced with a yud. The yud
alludes to the balotum tells us the 10
years that Yseph was in prison and then
he stayed an extra two years because it
put his trust in the uh butler as we'll
soon see and the 10 years he was there
because he spoke against his brothers.
The Torah tells us now it continues
verse 21.
is and God was with Yoseph
and he made him wellliked
and he also made the warden of the
prison favor him as well.
What does this mean? And he made him
well liked
that everybody that saw him accepted him
and liked him. He was a nice guy.
Coming from the same words as a kala who
is beautiful and liked by many that the
Mishna talks about it doesn't mean
necessarily that they're being kind but
people around them find favor and
kindness in them. Verse 22.
And then the warden of the prison placed
all the prisoners that were in prison in
Yoseph's charge.
All the prisoners that were incarcerated
in that prison.
And whatever was done there was done
under Yoseph's direction.
Meaning as the tarum says
only with Yoseph's instruction were they
were able to do things and under Yseph's
direction were they all commanded to
follow. Verse 23
the warden of the prison could not find
any fault in anything that was under
Yseph's jurisdiction
because God was with him. Whatever he
did,
God made him su succeed.
[snorts]
Why was he so successful in the prison?
Because he rec because God was making
him successful. The same lesson is that
we recognize for us that when we realize
that everything we do is only because
God is with us then we will see the
success in whatever we do. This
concludes the sixto reading for parasv.
