Moshe summons Yehoshua and appoints him as his successor in the presence of the entire Jewish people; He then hands a Torah to the tribe of Levi. Moshe conveys G-d’s command to the Jewish people that they assemble once every seven years, during the festival of Sukkos, in order to hear their king read specific passages from the Torah (Hakhel). This ceremony was designed to instill renewed commitment to G-d’s covenant with them.
