Eikev - 7th Portion

Join me as we learn Chumash for Shabbos, the seventh Torah reading of Parshas Eikev, chapter 11, verse 22. Moshe is continuing to encourage the Jewish people of their commitment to follow God, its commandments, and be connected to God. Verse 22. For if you were to take measure and safeguard all the commandments that I'm commanding you, commanding you to do, to love God your God, to go and walk in all of his ways, and to cleave to him. Rashi, This is plenty of times that he's using this terminology, remember, don't forget, and so on, is because it's warning us that one should not forget what they learned. What does it mean to go in God's ways? same way God is merciful, after they you should be merciful. Who gave them kindness? So too, after gave them kindness, you should be kind. How does one cleave to God? After and how is it possible to cleave to God? God is a consuming fire. Therefore, the sages tell us, Ella, the sages explain, connect to the students and the scholars of Torah. And I learn and consider it need back to by as if you're connecting to God. Connect to a rebbe, and that's the way you connect to God. Verse 23. And then God will drive out all the nations from before you. And you will then and you will dispose you you will dis- you will then dispossess the nations who are greater and stronger than you. Rashi, you will I see some you do what you got to do, and I will do do I have to do. You im kem, Atem geboyrim im geboyrim im kem." You are strong, but they're stronger than you. "Shim lo ishi shor geboyrim mashav ach min shom shav ach min im im im Sumim im kem." If the Jews weren't strong, what's the big deal the Amorites are stronger than you? You're weaklings anyway. But, he's telling you you're strong, but they're stronger, but still no God says he'll get rid of them for you. "Atem geboyrim mishor umos." You are stronger than all the other nations of the world. But, "V'heim geboyrim im kem." These Amorites are stronger. How do we know that? Because, as we know, as we're [clears throat] soon going to see, God tells them, "Don't worry about them as you are stronger. They won't be able to conquer them." Verse 24. "Kol hamokem asher tidroch kaf raglechem." For every place which your soles of your feet will tread, "L'bai L'bai on it. Lochem yihyeh lachem." It will you. "Min hamidbar from the desert v'haL'vanon" and Lebanon, "Min ha'noar" from or into the south of Lebanon, "Min ha'noar" from the river, from the great river, "Min ha'nahar P'ras" which is referring to the Euphrates River, "v'ad hayom ha'acharon" till the Mediterranean Sea, "Yamah kulchem" to the west will be your boundary. Those are your promised borders. Verse 25. "Lo yisyatzev ish bifneichem." No one will stand up against you. "Pachdechem u'morachem" Your terror Your You will cast your immediate terror and and the fear "Yiten Hashem Elokeichem al pnei ha'aretz." God will put on the people of the land "asher tidrechu vo" wherever you will tread with your feet there "ka'asher diber lachem" like God has spoken concerning you. Rashi. "Lo yisyatzev ish." "Eini ela ish." I only know man. "Uma" How do I know about a nation "umishpachat" family of "ish" or "ishah" or a woman who looks to use magic against them? "Minayin" How do I know that? "Talmud lomar lo yisyatzev" they will not stand. "Mikol makom" anybody. "Im kein talmud lomar ish" Why does it then say man? "Afilu gevir umalach" Even a man who is great and strong and tall as Og, he too will not be able to hold you back from conquering his land. "Pachdechem u'morachem" "V'lo pachad umorah" Isn't fear at all the same thing? What's it referring to? This type of terror and fear? Aren't they the same? Allah but your fear Allah crazy is going to be those that are close and your terror and your Allah those that are far when we talk about terror When we talk about the terror I'm sorry terror is where somebody happens suddenly you scare the individual Moira however dread is when a person is Diego when he's worried he doesn't know what's going to happen the maybe maybe it's going to happen today maybe later so there's different levels of fear that a person can have there's terror and there's dread your terror is like I surprise you with something boom you get something happens you never expected it you don't know what's going to happen later and then there's something that a person dreads what's going to happen in the future that's a constant fear that a person has and this is what the nations of the world had from the Jewish people number one the surprise element and number two the dread that they never know if they're going to be attacked next What did God say this this is already in the book of Exodus but I thought that my fear I will send before you that any nation that they come upon that they'll be victorious and they'll be able to overcome the nations of the world and the Jewish people sovereignty will be dominant for eternity
