Devarim - 4th Portion

Join me as we learn Chumash for Wednesday Parshas Devorim, the fourth Torah reading, chapter 1, verse 39. We continue where Moshe is telling the Jewish people to rebuke about the fact that scouts were sent to the land of Israel, which caused them to wander in the desert for 40 years. Verse verse 39. And your children, your little ones who you'd said would be prey and your children and one that they did not know the difference between good and bad. They will be the ones to come to the land of Israel for them and none other to them will be given the him you are sure and they will inherit it. Verse 40, however, for the rest of you, you're going to you're going to turn around and journey southward into the desert heading towards the Red Sea. I had said initially that to take you through the short way and go through the width of the land of Edom, which means let's out of going south towards north and we can actually go and go into the land from that side on the south on the west end of the land. However, you messed up and you made it because of the because of that you had this delay of 38 years. Turn around. You have to turn backwards. You're going to go back into the desert towards the sea in the desert they were going to the south of Mount Seir which was in which was in between the Yam Suf, the Sea of Reeds, and Mount Seir. Now, now you're going to have to turn around and make your way along the side of the sea and this is going to be that you're going to have to go around the whole Mount Seir, which is the whole south border. I mean, how might of the misrach this way they're walking from west towards east. Verse 41. And then you responded and said to me, We have sinned against God. We're going to go up and wage war as commanded. And each person put the weapons on him. Girded himself with weapons and you were ready yourself to ascend the mountain. The word explains comes from the word we are ready and to go up to go up and to approach. This is the terminology that used back then. We are ready. We're ready to wage the war, go up onto the mountain and fight. However, as Moshe reminds them, at that point I told you you should not go. God said to me, Tell them to Do not go up. Do not do not wage war. Because I am not with them. You will not be able to overcome your enemies. And you will be struck down before your enemies. This will not be successful for you. You're going to going to cause to go down because of it. Verse 43. I told you you did not listen. You rebelled against God. You willfully ascended the mountain of the Amorites. Verse 44. And the Amorites that were there sitting in the mountain came out. On that mountain to greet you. They chased you the way they do them. Just as bees do, pursuing and they beat you and they smote you at the Mount Seir. As far as Hormah. What does it mean like the bees do? More as you make Adam. Just like a bee, the moment it stings a person, it immediately dies. I have him so to the Emirates. So to the Emirates, even though they were chasing you, but the moment they hit you, they died as well. Verse 45. You returned before God. God did not heed to your voice, nor would he listen to you as well. Verse 45. What does it mean that God didn't listen to you? Is it possible that God wouldn't listen? God is merciful, but meaning you made it as if because of your actions you've taken that even the attribute of mercy that God had, you turned it into an attribute of judgment and made it as if God lacks empathy and therefore was apathetic to your requests. Verse 46. You stayed in Kadesh for many days. This is Kadesh Barnea that it's referring to. The same amount of time that you dwelt in the subsequent encampments traveling afterwards. As Rashi explains how many times 19 years. As it says like the amount of time like you dwelt in the other in the other times. How you that was 38 years. So you test me 19 of the years they were in Kadesh. For you to shine the 19 years they were traveling around from place to place. Returned to Kadesh as it says that they This is the order and this is the amount of years that are described in the book according to the history of the world of where the Jewish people were. Verse 47 Chapter 2 Verse 1 And then we turned southward and journeyed into the desert that I have Yamsuf towards the Red Sea. God spoke to me and we circled southwest Mount Seir for many many days. If you wouldn't have sinned you would have went straight through Mount Seir and entered the land going from south to north. Because since you guys messed up when you sinned we had to turn to the desert which is towards the Red Sea which is the south of Mount Seir. As we mentioned previously and they went towards the desert walking along the south of Mount Seir and going towards the land of Israel from west to east. We might have missed it. The way of the sea that same way when we left Egypt. That it's in the corner of the southwest corner of Israel and from there we went from west to east towards the land of Israel. So too they no longer went from south to north but they went from south from west to east to enter the land of the land of Israel. We circled the entire Mount Seir. What does this mean to circle? Not that it made a complete circle but we went throughout we went throughout the whole south border along until we came to the land of Moab as we discussed previously in the book of Numbers.
