CHAZAQ's Torah Talks #60: Rabbi Labish Becker - Daf Yomi: The Great Unifier

[Music] thank you welcome welcome to yet another episode of our Torah talks kazakh's Tuesday night programs with special guests tonight we have with us a very special guest a very dear friend of Kazakh the executive director of the Israel of America srita Rabbi welcome Malaysian it is to have you here to the headquarters how you doing it's a wonderful to be here has it sent to the nerve center and tonight's topic is really exciting dafuyomi the great unifier and that we're talking to Rabbi dafiomi and I gotta tell you that uh I believe which Becker is the one that got Kazakh involved with the whole doc yomi movement with uh Irish yearman programs we have it every single day bro it's going very very strong and uh before we jump into the topic to give our audience a little bit of a background other than that yourself and the great work you're involved so we'll start with me uh I guess we'll start to start at the beginning and I grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin yeah and yeah my father was arrived there for 40 years uh he was he came from Poland and he learned from which is our famous told me an interesting thing we're talking about and he said well he learned to be out of stock when he was 11 years old the people of the city stood up for the buffering 11 years old wow and that's really we're going to get into dafyami soon and we'll see that's really covered up tired of the entire concept of death so barthashems I grew up in Milwaukee I went to the I went to tell you ship in Chicago I was in the mirror nerdy cell but it climbed from 11th and then I went to Lakewood and uh for Kylie was in the mirror in New York and then what happened very interesting thing I was flying to Milwaukee uh for PESA my father all of Sean was not well at that time and I was flying back and there was there was a like a middle-aged man on the plane and he calls me and says younger man you know come talk to me and you know my wife said at that moment she should have known what the rest of life was going to be like as I left her I apologize left turn my two-year-old son and I went and I sat next to him and he asked me he says um I said what are you doing here so he says there's a Mr Schwartz from South America who came to Milwaukee to have a heart operation and I'm flying from New York for two hours to uh and then going back to New York and he said what are you doing and I said you know my father and I'm in the miracail and he says are you looking to go out of Kyle to do something they said yeah I'd like to go to some sort of cloud work or ready or something so he tells me he says you know you seem like a fine younger man he says go to the Agoda to shmom bloom and tell him that Benny fish off sent you oh wow then fish off as hard as hell was the chairman of the board of I put his throat for 50 years so my uncle's neighbor oh right and he lived right here so so the bus share it and we're thinking about it and I wrote an article called it should have made in heaven because literally was up in the airplane and it was it was wild you think of it a man from South America of all places comes to all plays in Milwaukee which is I didn't even know they had hospitals you know and he and a man comes for two hours I happen to be on that plane and those days there weren't a lot of from people on planes to Milwaukee I meet the chairman of the board of the Agoda and he tells me go to their brother and get your job and I did I came to that good I met her I'm like Bloom I met five different people I ended brother Sheriff's Office and remember Sheriff says to me he says you know he says you know if you come and you work here you'll influence thousands of people that was you told me and I thought he was like a little bit you know exaggerating but boy was he right unbelievable Hashem and they they you know they got me as I started out with Torah projects brought from one of the companies the shirad rugby Soul reisman we started that shirt um yeah yeah we started I went around to all my friends I said I'm starting a new sheer and I don't want to be embarrassed can you come one time oh you got to come one time and when he finished that year they came back and he said we've never heard of Shirley's Wildlife some of them are still there 38 years later you know so that's my yeah so so that's what I've been involved with in the entire aspects the youth and Baha building I go to Cicero around the country those have been the areas in which I've been that exclusive being all of these years and uh unbelievable wow it's been wonderful that story is unreal amazing out of nowhere it's like a shirt squared yeah what are the chances what have you seen like out of nowhere to Milwaukee yeah it's probably the only time his life he's probably never heard of Milwaukee you know me I went there one time in life I was there very very powerful very very good everything is diminish them everything's from heaven and that's on you that's why we're here so before we get to the topic of uh you know today let's take it back to the the origins of Davion how did it all start and what's today's history so we've all heard about Rabbi Shapiro being the one behind it but rather you probably know the best right so I have so I have a great source of my my grandfather was known as the Azure over rabbit uh the bear Maisha and um he was you know the safer very much in the age to us and he grew up in Poland and in that neck of the woods I guess and we came from a city called Ultra and he knew where Mayors Shapiro and they were friends and they came in 1921 as part of the first mishflakas to help build bring a gurus Israel to America in 1923 where mayor shapir was 33 years old he had not found a little you should have yet he was a rough of a city I don't remember the name of the city was rather the city and he came to the prophetstein and he had an idea and he had the idea of the that feel me and when he spoke about the Daffy I mean so what he said was and this is why we call it the great unifier what what remainsbury's said in his original speech was let's take a look at the doctor the gemara the Daphne was written in bubble Rashi is from France tices is from Germany right the Riff was from North Africa the run was from Spain the Russia was from Poland was from lithium nobody's from Japan I don't know maybe it was so he said this is what dafyami is going to be it's going to unify the world he said we're going to make a sheer that and he said this if you go to Australia or Australia you will be able to sit down and I've done it by young man I'm gonna come late he's trust me I'm walking late so they're all sitting there and we've all seen the picture of the sky and remember that video that went around a couple years ago so you saw the Puffs and that was going to that kinesia Gondola live that's why by the way you see all the pictures of the people and they're looking at the camera because they're waiting for them to take the picture sir mayor shapir comes in they're all sitting down everybody's there every mayor shapir comes in and stands up for him and the place went nuts stood up for this young man named Black Beard a beautiful you know you know and everybody stood up wow it was that was because what the close time was working we all know that we all we just read the other right so what did we learned yeah I ran into like 70 years why why what does that mean they said because he was 18. and they wanted to make him the head of this of the of the uh the Basin of the San Andreas and then he said on the 18th they're gonna laugh with me that he should have 18 rows different he had to look older so he knew that Revenge appeared all the older people are gonna say what is it yeah what does he think he is once a couple times not for him ah that was it that's why God she thought of it so he came in and he had this booming deep voice so you remember they didn't have microphone in those days right and they have the thousands of people write these inspiring he was a it was a spellbinding corridor he was able to speak in everyone and he told this over what I just said about this is going to unify Claudia's throne and this was where the idea at that moment and I read newspaper accounts of it it it set the place on fire you know sometimes you have a good idea but it takes a while till they get the place went on fire they said right away wow we're in they understood it and they were in so they started that day that night oh here's the same sorry the story the story continues that's not over yet because as we all know you're in the same so as you all know that he's a glass for a few minutes yeah right you have to you have to grab it while it's hot that's what I remember about your friend didn't see him shots remember seize the moment cherish grab it I still hear it so so between the seal between the casino and the beginning of Duffy on because they were starting for Rosh Hashanah of wait a second wow next year is the 100th anniversary of the Taffy Army wow just 2023 wow right we're talking about you being born so yeah so it's a 100th anniversary it's a hundred years that the only next year will be the 100th anniversary so yeah so so that's how it got started but you know but the history of the film itself is totally fascinating of how it grew yeah so that's what I wanted to ask you so I understand I remember the scene we had for uh the scene we had a cinema shots of course we had then we had the CMS right before covet and you remember yes it was a full house oh you're so excited the energy was amazing and I remember vividly that you said that when you got involved with the guru the first scene you had approximately 5 000 people there more or less and today we know I'm saying a side term at like Stadium which is close to 100 000 people and this year there was past scene there was the Barclays Center as well and then all over the world I think the X-Men is a half a million people half a million people so rabbit Becker just to have to speak to the man behind it again he's not going to take the credit for it I think there's a lot of great people involved with it a half a million how did that growth happen guide us through the the the the way yeah okay for sure so let's go back to Europe yeah because there's the death know me actually went through a sadly almost near death but what happened in 1930 was the first scene with the stuff yomi it was 1920 1930. it's very interesting I didn't realize until recently I mentioned you my grandfather was a friend of America in 1930 he made a seamless shots for the tenth time your grandfather my grandfather 10 times there's a picture in the Bronx the butter and bottom of the Bronx send out an invitation 10 times another sounds beautifully did 10 times never thought about it until I realized that was in 1930 maybe it was a gift to his friends with leadership you never know so your grandfather films for the this was his I could just imagine dragons oh yeah and he there's a picture of him standing on like the balcony of the blender you should if you've ever been there it's a very impressive building that by that time you had a little blue new Shiva and they had thousand thousands of people so the scene was in there yeah it was a little bit the next seal was already it was already in the sad time was 1938 and it was right before the war so already it was subdued in other words right you know you're not gonna make the other one notice we we people think that that people did not know what was coming people knew what was coming they knew and they tried to get out many of them and you know there was no scene there was there was a scene but there was a civilian yeah it was a small scene they didn't make they didn't make it like a big thing 1946 was the Nexium that was right after the board right so again it was and there were very few people learning dafyami that was when the the Holocaust Survivors just rebuilding themselves and coming to America uh there were some dafyami sure but it wasn't a major thing as a matter of fact I heard I can only say I heard this that in the 1960 dinner was there was shroom going on that started to rebuild there were people now these survivors were in Borough Park and they all started making sure and they started learning together and it started you know the the there were people in other cities as well Chicago Los Angeles filled up all of these places everywhere there was there was a shoulder was you know they started to be adapt you know it started it started to grow and they made assume in I was told in 1968 in the BC for like 300 people this was the good history of America this was the good no there was a rabbi Lish at that time I'm not sure this is before my time so even I was a kid at some point I don't know if it was that good was probably about sure is um um the davioni commission was founded by this revolutionary besser that was already in the in either the late 60s or in the 70s they found the only commission whose job was to propagate that the only put ads yeah you know making skimmars get the word out so the publicity started at that point and that really helped to grow now as we know from the gemara you're you're in town McLaughlin I'm sure yeah you know I don't have to sell you but you know that it says that that right you should make right it takes a 20 let's go down to some of the basics but the the talmud is 2711 pages that needs both sides I always remember everybody thinking about two 7-Elevens but it life remember from walking you know so you know yeah right let's fall in place so so we're looking at this and there's all these seats and I'm there with Rabbi boar hunting for my best sir and we're deciding you know what do we do if you don't fill it up to be like an embarrassment you know so we decided we'd help everyone's under construction we'll put up streets over some of this stuff so what happened was is that really shares itself in the Reformation came up with an idea and he said people like to be invited to something so we're going to do is we're going to make a ticket that says um admit one so they made tickets ten thousand they figured ten thousand tickets will be uh ten thousand seats in this area no there's only four and a half it's like people do coupons you know for the supermarket you assume a certain level 4 500 seats ten thousand should be fine well guess what we underestimated Comics because they all came and we had about 4 000 people standing outside waiting their ticket but I got a ticket one and amongst them was our very own Rabbi overall there's some Pearl oh wow who remembers waving his ticket they're all baby and they wouldn't let the staff outside of the hall because they were afraid they'd rip us apart and we walked outside so we had to stay inside because there were all these people but what it showed us is the love uh Cloud you Surfers total love for tired that this is we knew we we made mistake this is there's no there's no amount you can plan big enough for the same stuff that's where we learned that lesson so but we were still in small mode because first of all we then the next scene was 1990. we'll get us don't we'll get to the game in 1990 and that we did and we went upstairs to the Madison Square Garden which is 20 000 seats wow plus we had a 40 I thought let's see we're gonna go for 25 000 that was only again we're the first time you multiply from 1200 to 5 000 it's four times right now we're going for four thousand to twenty thousand it's five times yeah we're really taking a risk and the numbers are big and we're again you know it's trembling trying to do and and so and also there was no internet there was no you know the people who were there were there we did it in other cities but there was no connection between them really and Hashem that filled up 20 000 25 000 people Madison Square Madison Square had the first time that's apparently not to Us Madison Square Garden like oh wow that's so beautiful and that's when the Schwab spoke wow and you had rebiakov come in that scheme 1982 these were the guidance spoke with is the closest burger rabba and in 1975 by the way they made the the seam to the dedicated to the survival to the Holocaust of those who died especially the children and I'll never forget boy said tati did I do anything wrong to be punished like this and everyone was like just it's cool here's the waiver upset which I went yeah I mean he he knows you know he knew of what he spoke he grew up in Germany he knew what he was dealing with over there so so the scene was always in there then we started programs for Kinder laughing schools to learn on behalf of the children who died in the Holocaust and we have the whole you know whole program that we do each series which is we had one time we had we put on a book from uh to be shining to see night they should know what shots is all about remember a kid doesn't know shots I mean even if you learn gamara doesn't mean you know the history of shots do you know who vashi was do you know rebe was this is this is a his you know to know the history is amazing I gave when I spoke there at that I decided by Kazakh so one things I spoke about is get to know the the Royal learn their lives you can learn so much from them they're not just dry bones saying things the same way that the gemara is alive let the tonight become alive understand that when they said that why they said that who they were so you have these programs in the schools in the children's living and when they learn they're going to do that total totally better grip on it and they'll understand yeah where they're coming from because and you learn better by the way your actual understanding you understand why the Bryson was written after the mission and what the relationship between prices and what ratio of the gemara is to the Bryson and you understand you know like one of the things I'll give you an example it says the camera always starts with something very the mission says what seems to be a straight and then by the time you get to the gemara it's gemara assumes a certain knowledge and the same thing's not crying until we get to our time Arts go right they also assume you have certain knowledge certain knowledge you don't come back in 100 years from now there's going to be a minute you're gonna have to explain how it's called the appearance on the bottom you know he knows what I was going to talk you know but that's the history so the kids now start to understand it so when they learn their learning is a whole different understanding and they see it's it's an integrated unit it's not just like so so that was so let's I don't want to be part of that view I'm a commissioner projects there's all practices it's all together that's the only you know that's that's the only commission to our patch we all work amazing together you know hand in hand also works this is all the Torah divisions so Pierce and also we did for the benos that when they came to see them they did they took on like but very much so as we grew in our understanding that we spread out ourselves so in 1997 we already made I swear it was too small 25 000 is 25 000. so two things have 97 ones we took the NASA Coliseum out here in Long Island and two that's when we hire a bunch of satellites so it's very expensive but we did it we had Los Angeles we had Chicago we have Miami and each one had two thousand three thousand four thousand it was it started to explode but we're not done because then in 2005 oh wow we started going that's already when the internet's starting to come in and the satellite got a little bit cheaper that's when we started to go International that's when we start to have a little blimp and in Europe we had sites and we had sites in South Africa we went everywhere and in in the United States we went to Continental Arena which was bigger and then what happened is very interesting ten days before the sealum the pressure got so great for tickets we opened up the Javits Center wow and we had another 10 000 people who sold tickets in one week okay how much how many people in the Continental Continental was about another 22. the Madison was 25 NASA Coliseum uh at that time in about whatever 15. I mean and then it's so hard to do one locations let me tell you something right so so we had an integrated program we're part of the program Continental part of the programs from and that was nerve-wracking I could not begin to tell you I was involved in in trying to you know coordinate it and and it was we had we had renting in case it does it fails because we never did it before and the companies that we had we hired a company um that did international sports events so they were used to doing this but we had backup we had an ex a speaker ready to speak or the speaker should speak twice as long in case the thing fails and at the beginning it did for the next five minutes of probably that maybe the worst moment you know is this gonna work it's not going to work as one that organizes the events right like and it was wonderful and we had all of these other cities that started and we started in this past team up to 2012 2012. right now maybe um 90 000 and 90 000 in that life plus around the country around the world now we were around the Brokers though I mean the internet was around the world and we had a nice there was a Nace at the same because I remember I'm a witness to this miracle yeah and touring and really important how do I know it was really important because one of the things I was trying to take care of is when the bottom came in we had 1200 rub on them there and we had and we were just trying to wipe off their seats I was doing that right it didn't work because it was just two women at seven o'clock the Sun comes in the rain stopped and the sun came out and everybody said where's Michelle witness to this seven o'clock boring yes it stops the Sun comes out a beautiful diary night I was on the days I was there I saw them while they were abundant I saw that all the seats were wet and we were pumping in the organ and then we had enough time to really dance enough space to really dance because the other dancing was the dance he was beautiful it was just uh you know it feels like it was yesterday so this is 2012 we're only 10 years ago and then in Boston that was and this scene we did also this scene we went back to Met Life but freezing colors I say that there was two years of fights because there were two options right one option was to take five different places you have to take every place which would have been very expensive and a nightmare of coordination but everything inside or should we take MetLife Stadium which is outside and chance it right so I'll tell you another fun fact that the snow season in New York was January 15th through March 1st it rarely seems no very first it really snows in January yeah really stones Jeremy first so we took a chance and we took a chance and I got to give you know Ralph reader pushed hard he's like he was the CEO of CEO and you know he pushed hard against a lot of opposition people were like very nervous and we did it outside and it was cold well you know I can't deny it but it's 42 degrees and it wasn't you know and one of the things that was so beautiful we said that it was a beautiful kitchen I still get letters from people that say changed my life I had an interesting story I get a call from a lady and she says I want to thank you for my father running Shaz and I said okay you know I thought she just meant the same she said no no no you yeah I said really what happened she says remember eight years ago I called you up and I asked you my father at that time is 80 years old and could you make him feel me and he finished shots for the first time at 87. so she called to say thank you so I said thank you for reminding me yeah it made me feel good to do it anytime no matter what age you are that's right so the lesson is it does not matter how old you are the truth is they're kid they're they're teenagers who've learned me and you see you go yeah at any age I started as a teenager I tried three Cycles ago I was in the high school and uh that's more or less the same time that hazak started so I did a few minutes a few drink dates and then the following cycle I started as well and then I got married so uh it was a little bit uh yeah but this time around Boston we're strong yeah somebody complained to me that he only learned broccoli dropped out every year after Bros the joke used to be both shots comes you know rest comes and you drop out yeah it's one of the hearts so so I remember I spoke we spoke in a certain Rob and he says it wasn't so bad if you learned breakfast she's seven and a half years that's like amazing compliments right so what do you so what's the alternative you learn nothing you know what are you and human 700 black whoa before that if you only 700 black movies on learning 700 block you know so it doesn't matter anytime you go to the sugar this year if you're gonna miss your Miss what's got to do with the other you know so there's really that's you know we have to get that into people's minds that any dot is a good dog you know every dot is a good dot any dot you can make it make it application I don't think we mentioned in this past year outside for the freezing cold which was meant like but there was an additional Stadium of Barclays oh so what happens oh again and then there was online all over the world the same thing happens the two things that the same thing happened two weeks before we ran out of space and I I cannot tell you what it's like to be in the office when people call you up I could relate because people were calling khazad because we got a bunch of things either when a lady starts crying and says my husband has been learning for seven and a half years and I promised my children oh and you know not you know we did have a Nace in one of the previous ceoma I remember in those days now we could track it because the obviously the technology better be contracted and I remember we lost 47 tickets went out nobody knew where it was somehow they didn't know it was and a week before the museum it was found in an apartment building Bar Park under a radiator wow it had been sent out three months before and somebody happened it was sitting here for three months somebody noticed it and I cannot tell you how many people in 47 people I made so much you know one person you never know people come over they say that I thank you for good people because they actually said I thank you 30 years ago you got me a seat I'll never forget it but it goes the other way too before I get too happy I gotta I have a person who told me I'm mad at you for 15 years so I said what did I do with your business he said you couldn't get me a ticket 15 years ago oh wow I won't forgive you unless you get me this time this is something very very important um what we did this year we never did before we made an offer that any Holocaust Survivor who wants to come will give a free ticket this past scene this past scene this scene this past 2000 I saw something and because we gave and we had hundreds of and and along with a second ticket for anybody to obviously there they have to come along with something so a second ticket for a family member and then we made a MetLife Stadium 50 Stadium available to them so they can be warm inside and one of the most powerful moments of the scene is when they all marched out onto the field and anything on the Imam and like they sang it in the camps and I remember I just read a book with this a woman wrote a book and she wrote about the same as us and she said I went to the Sea machas and that is our ultimate that the first event in MetLife Stadium then after they said the Super Bowl was that year and they said that they used us is to pass the Super Bowl to learn how to do it right wow so they learned from us they said we learned from you how to run an event so we were the very first event about my stadium was the scene it was the 2012 signature and God willing will but but the main thing that SEMA shots I
