So we're here talking about a brand new
program that's available for regular
layman like me or maybe even Ben Tyra
who are learning you know everybody's
sitting in yeshiva stiking away learning
Gmorra but like things like novi and
sometimes we let fall to the wayside we
figure we can ask somebody now they have
this amazing program that you can attend
shurim and they'll give you marmakus and
you get to learn haloh with all the
marmakus and where it starts off and how
it goes And this is a way for you to
hold on to this al not necessarily that
you should be pasing for your family but
at least when you go to the ro I believe
you'll have more in your hand with us is
Rabbi Gladstein one of the famed magum
one of the one of the that is part of
this amazing program Gladstein for
joining me. How are you?
>> Good. How are you? How's everything?
>> Good. So tell me about this program. I
heard it started about a year ago.
Correct.
>> Yeah. So we started about a year ago. We
started it with uh two two tracks. We
have uh what we call
where we learn one year of one year
which are the classically mim of let's
say somebody learning for in other words
if somebody wants to get they typically
learn of now this is not a
program in terms of giving uh ordination
but we do give a certification
certification that that reflects that a
person has a a a strong familiarity with
the uh subject matter. And so one year
of one year and then we had another
track and this year we expanded it to
Shabas either or more and then also
and here's why this is so important.
>> Please tell us
>> look uh the learning of Gomorrah has
exploded in Kisa which is beautiful. A
lot of people are learning dafi
and it's very important but truth be
told that's not the liker is
that's you know well established writes
in the intro to the a person's main
learning has to be
furthermore even mystically even
kabalistically that says the main kesher
we have with the tora isa
for so even says the word is
in other words you know every every is
wed to thera every
so we're engaged to her but we got to
you got to consummate the marriage the
way you consummate the marriage is
learning
so here's another important thing
>> okay
>> when it comes to learning everybody
knows life is busy Life is hectic and in
order for a person to do what they
really want to do deep down you need to
have responsibility. So what this
program does is that it's a commitment.
you're committed to the Shia once a week
and there there are there is
accountability
uh you know there there
is certification their their source
material and uh there the level what a
person's able to accomplish in learning
is really commensurate with the
commitment they have to it. So yes,
a person's committed to learn the daf,
but they're not necessarily committed to
know it. And if you ask somebody new say
over,
>> you say, "Oh yeah, I know the name of
the or I know the some of the concepts,
but to take responsibility to know
material."
You're only going to know it if you're
you commit yourself to know it. So, and
the level of commitment of our program
really allows people to to take
ownership over the matern.
>> All right. So, the shar is once a week.
>> Shar is once a week.
>> We're talking about what like an hour.
>> The shar is uh my shar is an hour and 15
minutes.
>> Okay. And even though you know it sounds
long but because there's such an engaged
and the people are they many of them
prepare and people are taking notes and
people take it seriously and we don't
just do the just say yes no maybe
we get the juice out of it the lumbus of
it so the time passes fast
>> and people really enjoy it people um
think about it during the week they
prepare they they review they there's a
short quiz afterwards and it's it's
lifealtering even someone who has
regular commitments to gamarra this is
learning to the next level really
>> program is called
so you were saying uh an hour and 15
minutes every week but let's say I where
let's say the shar is not in my
neighborhood is there a way to attend
remotely
>> yeah yeah so the okay so good um we all
we obviously prefer people are there
live you know I say do live to zoom But
Zoom is a good option. You know,
>> Gladstein is a famed Zoom rabbi. I mean,
you've been giving Shore every week in
person and everything goes up and you're
not you're not one that shies away from
technology.
>> No, no, no. You know, the Tory says,
you have to harness the technology of
Yafes to bring it into the base medish.
But look, we we prefer the live
attendance. But if you're not in my
neighborhood, so then the the options
are you could watch it live on Zoom. You
could um those who are part of the
program have access to the shar even
people who come to the share live they
review the shar by listening to it
again. So yeah, both are both are
options. Both options are available. You
could attend live or you could listen to
it um uh zoom or afterwards recorded.
>> Now glassian people that are attending
this year, do they get like a sheet of
Marchus and
>> Yeah. So look even even more than a
sheet there's a lot of um very fine
tailored uh source material
>> okay
>> everyone gets the
which has on one side the
on the other side you have the rama
translated you have main points of the
shak and the taz in English that's one
compendium that you receive another
compendium is you have summaries of
Shaktas and some other you also have a
visualization so charts and diagrams and
pictures. So you got you have a lot of
important source material and the main
thing really is that you have you have a
shir you have a majir you have a kabura
and you have a group of people who are
really committed to mastering this these
areas of halaka and you know this past
year was very successful.
>> We had about 50 people in my year.
>> Wow. We started off
>> and most
>> made it through all the various you know
levels of accountability. We had a few
we had a few uh actually withkim
with um we had with Rev Gamriel sinner
we had with other piskim and here here's
how I like to say it. You know for some
people they they're thinking you know I
could handle this. you know, it's been
it's been a while since I took a quiz or
a test or an oralina, but I'm game for
this. I'm ready for this. You know, I
need to I need to really elevate my
level of limitra. But you always have
people who are who are thinking, you
know, no, come on. I don't have a head
for this anymore. I could barely get
through the day and I try to crack open
a gamarra a little bit. And you have
some people who say, no, no, no, I'm,
you know, I don't have a head for bin or
quizzes or oral bin. So
>> which we can understand, you know.
[clears throat]
>> Yeah. You know, definitely I understand
100%. But so what what what I would like
to say is we're able to cater to both
kinds of people. If you if you feel your
game for this, then it's literally up
your alley. If you feel like, "No, no,
no, I'm not taking the test," then we
could cater to you. What do I mean is
it's not as hard as you think. What do
you mean? Even the bikino between me and
you, they're really they're they're
we're not trying to get you. We just
want to make sure that people are taking
it seriously. They're paying attention.
They know the basic concepts, even the
testing. Yeah, sure. If you're going to
know all the minutia, you'll really
excel. And but if you're not and you
know, but you're faithfully attending
this year and you're trying to review
it, you're going to make you're going to
make it through. You're going to do
well. It's it's really not daunting. In
other words, the the the testing allows
those who are fully committed to thrive
and at the same time it just elevates
the game of those who are just used to
maybe coming to a sheer sliding back and
you know not being fully attentive. So
what the testing will do is you're going
to be much more engaged and you're going
to see you know the basic concepts
you'll be able to do well even if you
don't know every single rabbi let's say
so it it it's it works for both and
we're going to ensure that that wherever
you're holding in life or in learning
you'll you will succeed in this program.
Look, I think it's important. You know,
everybody loves, you know, garging
away with
but I mean that's something that can
come up. We're talking about things that
come up in everyday life, right? I see
that um you're giving the on on
>> Yeah. Yes.
>> And then we have
is Shabas advance.
>> Yes. Ravita
is giving on Hilus
we have shavaslansky
and hilus
uh revil glass as well.
a lot of topics that are negaya in an
everyday life of people. You know, a lot
of people don't even think about, you
know, we're talking about work, you
know, what's overcharging, what's not
overcharging, what's telling people
what, you know, so there's a
>> people don't think about on an everyday
uh business level, let alone home level,
but home level is definitely very
important. So whether your wife is
asking you if you know something called
flig fell into something hot or whether
it's just a matter of katras this will
probably give you a better handle uh on
your own house as well.
>> Yeah you'll know you'll know what to ask
you'll know when to ask some things
you'll say you know this is not a shila
and some things you'll see that the way
you ask is really the answer you're
going to get is dependent on certain
factors that you may not even be aware
to present. Mhm.
>> So,
>> so but I guess that's what you're saying
the shar is doing. The shear is giving
you all the parameters or sometimes it's
just a black and white you know kosh or
not kosher kosher tra but sometimes it's
how did it happen? What happened? Tell
me how excellent to why was why hot was
it cold? Was it here? Was it there?
>> Yeah. And also and also it gives a
person a much more profound
understanding of the process that that
in all areas of life you know we're
obviously just covering one topic at a
time but when you see the depth of
what's behind the then you realize is
not just you know how I grew up or what
I saw people in my family do
>> it's it's you know this this is what
gave to you so it's part of uh it it's
it's Judaism it's yiddeskite it's
>> past it's you It wasn't given at hari in
written form but this is what we had to
learn and this is what the tyra enabled
us to do. Um yeah, most people don't
really focus so much on it's true. Why
why is Arabic lasting? Why aren't we why
aren't we more attentive to Allah
nowadays to to learning
and stuff like that
>> you know so look in in in yeshiva
obviously the focus is on the lumnus
because you know the yeshivas want to
give number one they want to teach um
they want to teach the the dak of
learning the process of learning the
logic of learning and then with that
they equip you to utilize that to apply
I mean you know the the the the the
sharper somebody's skills are in
lambdas, the greater their understanding
of will be. So the the the pra the
purpose of the years of nishiva are to
train you to be able to learn. But then
you need to take the training and use
it. So you know some sometimes people
get caught up so so much in the training
they they don't then take it to the next
level and use it
>> apply it properly right apply it. Tell
me as a as a mad shir you do you get
asked a lot of shilus during the sh or
or afterwards?
>> Sure. Sure. Sure. You know people bring
up questions. People ask questions
after. Again the purpose of the sh is
not that people know to ask. This is not
for for um developing raanim. You know,
but to get smika in yeshiva, you have to
spend two at least two star a day for a
year or two to learn the material. We're
talking about people who are not
currently in the yeshiva and but they
never had the opportunity to learn yada,
you know, they they maybe even learned
in k but they never learned uh they've
never learned
in their entire life. There are many
people like that, you know. They could
have
>> there's one right here.
>> Yeah. I mean they learned
>> I started learning about a year ago now
just to try to I said look you know it's
great that I can pick up and learn if I
was ready once start picking up I mean
but you know like sometimes I'm like I
really should know more
definitely.
>> Yeah. So, and then you have Yeshivaite
who let's say they they did learn
Shakazon
but now they want to get they want you
know they learned it so in depth but but
they never sort of covered all the
ground so in a systemized way to know
okay hold this and and
they they've they've spent so much time
delving into it that they don't have a
comprehensive knowledge of the subject
matter as one entity. So we have all
kinds of people. We literally we have
kyo people. I'll tell you last year in
our program we had yes bakar who he was
a mifa
>> and you know look this program is a
serious program the those who apply you
know they commit themselves even
financially to to be able to enter the
program. This bakr raised money to be
able to come to the program and he made
it through. He got this certification. I
think he's going into 12th grade. Last
year was in 11th grade. He took off a
night every week of his time and he did
phenomenal. He he he aced all the tests
and we had people who were
you know zakanim
>> who said you know let me give this a
shot. I've never learned Shakaz. So
literally I think the gamut of age
ranged about 70 years.
>> Wow. Seriously.
>> Yeah. So it was really uh
>> how was that for you as as the one
giving the share to have that variety of
age because you can't just teach it to
like you know 30 year olds. You have to
teach it from somebody who has a better
understanding and somebody who has a
lesser understanding.
>> Harder
>> you know it's very roing. You want to
make sure that someone who didn't
prepare and doesn't have strong
background is able to follow. So you
want it to be clear for someone without
the preparation without the background
to follow. But you also want it to be
challenging to season
that he also feels there's something to
gain here. So it's very
>> you explain it too simple. He's going to
be there like okay I could tune out now
because it's too simple for me.
>> Exactly. Yeah.
>> It's very hard on you last day.
>> It's very rewarding you know actually
and it's interesting that so this year
and in the first year we just started
Taru. That's why you know now's the
perfect time for people to join because
it's the very beginning of Taru Vice. So
I like to ask people to introduce
themselves in the beginning of the year.
So I go around to all the people who are
participating live and I go around then
I go to the zoom everyone should
participate. So you know this guy says
my shaw is in Cedarst the sh the the
share takes place live in Cedarhurst. So
I had people there from Cedarhurst from
Woodmir from Lawrence from Brooklyn
even. And I'm asking the live people
where do you come from? I'm come from
Cedarhurst. I come from Ullet. I come
from Lawrence. I come from Flatbush. I
come from Bor Park. And then on the
Zoom, you know, Lakewood, Tom's River,
Muny, Stanton Island. So, I'm thinking,
okay, this is all tri-state area. Then I
have a guy London. London. I mean, it
sure is 8:00. What? So,
>> 3 in the morning there. Yeah.
>> Yeah. It was Well, last week they didn't
change the clock yet, so it was like tw
It was 12, right?
>> But still, it's it's late. So, I think,
okay, London, then a guy tells me
Argentina.
>> Wow. And then I see the last guy in the
bottom corner of the zoom. He's driving
while he's listening to the shar. And
I'm looking he had a he it's a it was
light outside.
So where where are you? He was in China.
He was in China. So it's really uh
imamish. It spans the globe.
>> So we're talking about is not another
share. We're talking about something
that has weekly kaburas to challenge and
inspire clear makist and a guide from
learning that stick and a built-in
accountability with testing like Rabbi
Gladstein said you can sign up online
kavra.net or you can call 347-4597352
or if you so want you can send an email
adminra.net
where glastain I'm sure you're already
preparing for a share. I know how your
your day is so filled with shorimm and
um giving over knowledge. I just want to
thank you for your time and I don't know
you you might have convinced me to see
if I can even attempt this and I'm very
skeptical about tests. [laughter]
>> Okay, look uh keep up the good works and
it was a pleasure speaking with you as
always. You too.
