How should you treat your child when you catch them watching porn? There's an instinctive response. You want to confiscate all of their devices for eternity, hoping that that will call them to stop this destructive behavior. It makes a lot of sense. But you have to realize something. Very often it's counterproductive because what happens is they realize that they can't trust us and they just get these devices from somebody else. they hide them a little better and they continue doing whatever they're doing. So, here is the deal. Here is what you really want to do. You want to show your child that they don't have to choose between their parent and their porn. You want to show them that you are present with them even in their destructive habits. You're not running away. You're not closing your eyes. You're not alienating them. You're not dismissing them. You may not even confiscate their devices. And I want to explain this. Porn is a horrible, horrible, horrible addiction. But the only thing that's more horrible than porn is no attachment with your parents. Attachment is what allows us all to heal. And that's why if you have to choose between a child watching porn who is completely attached to parents or a child who doesn't have any devices but is emotionally disconnected from parents, you want to choose emotional connection and attachment because it's in that space and in that environment where healing and growth happens.
