Cantor Karl Neumann - Ein Lämmchen
41 views
Karl Neumann was a cantor and opera singer (lyric tenor). He was born in the Volhynia Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Ukraine). As a child, he sang alto in the choir of Nissi Belzer, with whom he toured throughout Eastern Europe. Upon arriving in Chernivtsi (Austro-Hungarian Empire; now Ukraine), he settled in the city and joined the local opera chorus. From 1906 to 1909, he studied voice in Vienna under Alice Crecy. In 1909, he launched his operatic career under the stage name Carlo Novelli. That same year, he succeeded Zvulun Kwartin—who had departed for St. Petersburg—as the Chief Cantor of the synagogue in Vienna's eighth district, Josefstadt.
