Cantor. Born at Thessaloniki (Greece). During the Second World War deported to Auschwitz. After 1945 cantor of Jewish communities in Berlin (i.a. Oberkantor of the Juedische Gemeinde). Multiple recordings. Being of sephardic origin, one of his achievements was a symbiosis of sephardic and ashkenazi elements in synagogue music. Buried at the Jewish cemetery Heerstrasse (Scholzplatz). Obituary in The Economist of 22.1.2000. The headstone bears a sentence from the New Testament: "The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner" (Mt 21), which might be interpreted as a symbol of Jewish openness to the Christian world
