What Buys a Man — • פרשת שופטים — צדק צדק תרדוף

The parsha opens at the gate, where judges are warned not to take even a small coin — because a bribe doesn’t tempt a wise man, it blinds him. It ends in a city of refuge, where a man cut off from his wife and children holds the one prayer that could free him, and sets it down for a loaf of bread. Between them: a king forbidden to gather horses, and an army that empties itself before the battle so that no man loses his house, his field, or his wife.
