Several business owners along 13th Avenue reached out to Burough Park Shamre after realizing they had fallen victim to the same scam. Two individuals entered multiple stores looking to purchase expensive electronic items. When it came time to pay, they claimed they didn't have cash and offered to send the money through Zel. Moments later, the store owners received what appeared to be payment confirmations by text message and email. The messages were fake, and the suspects walked away with the merchandise before anyone realized the money had never been sent. A coordinated team was assembled and investigators learned the suspects would be returning to pick up more merchandise. The suspects eventually abandoned their vehicle in front of a fire hydrant and barricaded themselves inside an apartment building. Officers established a perimeter, moved in safely, and took both suspects into custody without further incident. This case is another example of what can be accomplished when neighborhood volunteers and law enforcement work side by side.
