Blood Bothers... the MOURNING episode

okay um hi sh hi there blood brother hey Blood Brother Hey I just want to let everyone know that we're making sure that we got a blood brothers in before before we got haircuts cuz both of us have our our long morning hair morning m o u r n i n g not morning like Bed Head um hair of the morning of the m o r n i n g but morning as in grieving yeah I've told you my my hilarious uh Tish greeting that I do to everybody Tish night I go up to everybody because you're not allowed you're not allowed to greet people on because everyone's in morning for the destruction of the temple everyone morning so I go up to people and I say good morning and then good morning and they look at me and they're like you're not all you're not allowed to do that and then and then they think for a second and then they groan um so I think we should explain cuz all types of people watch this uh podcast and some people may be listening and may not be watching so they might not get the visual cues but we both have our long hair right now and that's because that's a that's one of the traditions of morning that you're not supposed to cut your hair and I thought it was only for 30 days I thought cutting your hair was for 30 days and then after 30 days days you could cut your hair but um well I I knew that for other for other relatives 30 days is you know you cut your hair after 30 days and for a parent um then 30 days and then other people have to comment to youur until his actually the the language is until his friends chastise him or I don't know how how would you translate yeah I guess chastise is good I I've been translating as make fun of but the but rebit Herz in Chicago told me that that was inaccurate what did he say it was because he made fun of me about being bald and I said oh so I can get a haircut now he said no it's not making fun of it is uh yelling at you yelling at you right yeah yelling at you so um after I just want to I don't I don't I don't want to to to say l about rabit hurs he didn't say make fun of me about being bald somebody else there made fun of me about being bald and then I in his presence and then you said up yeah that should count right somebody's making fun of my hair uhuh okay very good um so you went back to Chicago no you were sitting there this is during uh during Shiva oh during Shiva okay yeah for sure that wouldn't have helped during Shiva because right you have to at least it has to at least be 30 days but um and anyway so after the 30 days I was sort of goating people to yell at me and people you know they would do it like oh okay fine you want me to yell go get a haircut go get a haircut um and then I asked arov and he's like no no no it's three months and I'm like whoa three months so um what what was interesting to me is at first after the first 30 days I was sort of like having to egg people on to yell at me about my long hair but it was all like a joke now at this point people are actually mad at me it's very it's it's very interesting to see the language of halaka play out in real life because when I read that language Shu that his friends are gonna yell at him who's gon to yell at who who actually yells at somebody but it's starting to happen now people are actually mad at me they're like will you get a haircut already it's like it's not nice will you get like they're actually at it's so interesting I'll tell you what's interesting to me I I've commented before that I feel like there's a a bias towards acknowledging and understanding a certain personality type in halaka that there's exceptions made for for people who are particularly sensitive and like need things to be uh very orderly or not too weird right the the h regarding an isness we've spoken about this before that there are many halic leniencies that are granted towards c a very particular personality type yes because that personality type would have trouble upholding the H yes right but they're not exempt from the the changes for them which is is fascinating because there's other types of of differences that halaka accounts for by saying all right the person can't do that Mitzvah they're exempt from it or you know they can't do that but but for this type of person for the sensitive person for the fastidious person it it the Hal morphs for them um but there's there's no Haka that says like if you if boredom is physically painful for you you don't have to go to a minion there's no there's no recognition is boring okay right you're you're yeah thank you um so relating to the hair thing this hair hak about when people start yelling you can you can cut your hair when people start yelling at you to me that comes from that world like comes from the world of like all these hakas that I don't relate to like trying to think of examples of isas I don't relate to of things where it's like oh this is too too chaotic for you that you don't have to do it um that I just it's just not part of my perception of the world and it's not part of my Judaism but this is a wonderful little piece of of Judaism where um I get to it's a halaka that's that for me comes from that world but then I get to experience it because it's about other people's reaction to me and imposing that on me does that make any sense no I didn't follow that at all really I'm not trying to be funny I didn't follow that at all I don't I don't ever need to get a haircut like the Haka that says like oh you can't get a haircut because you're mourning I don't care I get I honestly always get a haircut whenever people tell me to whenever people yell at me uhuh uhhuh I have no sense I have no when is it time to get a haircut when people start commenting yes always okay so see I'm the exact opposite when my hair gets long it it hurts I get physical pain from it pulling really yeah when I'm lying down I can't fall asleep because the pull pillow is pulling it it's very hard for me yes makes me depressed I get depressed when my hair is long how you doing now you know I want to tell you something the the the genius of this custom of having to Davin three times a day being kazin three times a day has kept me has kept me so busy that not only have I not been able to be depressed about the long hair but I haven't really been able to fully feel like super sad but I I don't want to say I haven't felt super sad about mourning cuz I I am mourning but the having to catch a plane three times a day to me that's how it feels I mean it's like having to catch a plane three times a day you have to be on time for a minion three times a day it has kept me so occupied that um yeah it's sort of staves off a lot of the overthinking and depression induc thoughts that I normally have do you do you think that's the the purpose of it I don't know I'm I'm suspicious that it may be part of it it's about keeping you so busy that you don't have time to like wallow like I don't know perhaps yeah I feel like there's this this that's not a contradiction there can be multiple facets to it the thing that to me that I've been feeling is that you tell somebody they have to say c three times a day with a minion um they're you're forcing them to be around people and be part of the community yeah that too okay so it's being busy and it's being forced not to isolate those two go hand in hand they're they're they're similar things it's keeping you busy and it's keeping you among people which definitely you could see why both of those things would keep you out of like really deep I mean it would and mitigate to some extent any type of like real deep sadness um right but before we go on regarding people getting angry at other people about having long hair so yeah I I showed this to you after 30 days and I want to show it again because to me this is the iconic I'm probably going to get a copyright strike for this but I just want to share the iconic moment or image to me of um being angry at somebody for having long hair um I don't know what this is from by the way I remember you sent it to me I don't know what it's okay hold on just don't don't ruin it I'm gonna I'll I'll explain in one second so you don't know what that is no that is the iconic scene from Easy Rider that's uh Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson Dennis Hopper after they do the whole movie is like they transport these drugs and I think it's cocaine and they make they they sell it they get their money and like the whole Adventure is over hooray they did it and then the very end just like this very senseless death of one of the two pro protagonists where a redneck shoots him for having long hair and he dies oh no that's like the last yeah that's like the last minute of the movie why you get a haircut boom shoots him he dies and then I think the I think think Jack Jack Nicholson chases after the rednecks and they shoot him too and he dies and then they're both dead that's the end of the movie everybody dies the end it's very 1960s it's very like um you know uh nihilistic yeah so anyways why don't you get a hair because the thing that that I think of the thing that I think of that I sent to you as well when you sent me that my response with this about yelling at people for having long hair is long-haired freaky people need not apply that's correct long-haired freaky people need not apply but you know there's a hack for that you put out put put your hair up under your hat pick up my hair up under my hat yeah that's the that's the hack the life he said you look like a fine young standing look like a fine upstanding young man right yelled at him yeah the guy was really nice to him so I have I have by the way a series of I'll never make these because it's not important enough to me but a series of YouTube videos anyone knows references can we just say that anyone knows references should write them in the comments yeah Easy Rider I gave away but this yeah you gave away long hair freaky people need not apply I picked up my hair out under my hat and went right inside you can Google that and put that in the comments I had this idea for a YouTube video or a series of YouTube videos that goes through each of some of the the scenarios in in that song which I just gave away that it's a song um but that one is like I imagine a context where there's like this guy in 60s or 70s whenever the song was 70s and uh he's owns a hardware store and his son is telling him you got to be more open-minded it's like you know why do you even have that sign long hair freaky people he's like it's just a joke and he's like you know what you're right you know I should be more open-minded and then the guy comes in with his hair tucked up under his hat and he yells at the guy and makes him feel bad says H you like he KN he could tell that that there was hair tucked up under the hat and the guy probably had a big scruffy beard and he was like trying to be open-minded and nice but now the long-hair freaky people guy was just trying to make a point and yell at him and now then he cries you want to make that into a movie little YouTube short no just a short just a well it wouldn't be a YouTube short it would be a short in the text of regular things but it would be by the way it's interesting you said the 60s or the 70s whenever it came out and I was thinking to myself well you know we associate it with the 60s but probably like most things we associate with the 60s it was probably the early 70s and I just looked it up it was 1971 all right so right there on the on the cusp so can I share with you some insights that I've had being a hin three times a day yes please the past 3 months okay please do I had well one Insight that I had cuz when I'm doing K you know when I'm repeating the amida out loud and I hear judgment okay so I don't think this ISAT but I think this is um you know I think I don't think this is the lital meaning but I think it's a nice V what does it mean why does it come in here to this blessing to say remove from us um groaning and sighing like what does it have to do with that okay it's talking about the justice system okay so okay what's the difference between AET and a yit AET is a judge a yit is an adviser theb speaks about this where a a judge speaks he speaks from above to below meaning with authority top down top down y an adviser is a horizontal relationship he's he brings himself down to your level he speaks to you in ways that you can understand as opposed to a judge who just gives a ruling and you don't have to understand you just have to follow it but a y an adviser somebody who gets down to your level and explains things to you so that you can absorb it okay so that's what an adviser is there's a story a famous story that the Reb the fourth his two sons that God that if he asks God to curse the Heretics then he will be cursed so why doesn't he just stop being a heretic yeah so that no he can't I don't know he really likes it um but the other half of it that that I just thought of now which is I actually do have trouble saying that brooka not just because I'm afraid of getting tackled but I have trouble saying it because it's it's really harsh and like I like I say we're saying like you know praying asking God to completely destroy and crush and wipe out all of the Heretics and like I feel bad about it and it's hard for me um but none of the hak has ever mentioned that possibility like there's never I've never seen any anywhere not in gar the original gamar and not anywhere in any of the places that it's mentioned no mentions maybe this guy stutter because he because he's not a nice guy and doesn't want to be mean to the Heretics no I never saw that no but like yeah it gets me you're really your connection is really chopping up over here it's uh like you're running through a strobe light I probably see every 10th Frame my internet connection has been really really terrible recently I don't know why m so what else do you want to things that I was trying for a while every so often I'll do it again is to to read to when I'm doing the shots to say it like it's actual word like read it like like it has meaning as opposed to like you get into a groove of saying in a sing songy way and I try to like sometimes just say it as if I'm trying to say things that like say what it means um that's fun it feels weird I mean not to go with the Rhythm but actually to read it like it's um it's supposed to be but to say it like that and like while you're doing the how do people react to that well what ends up happening is like especially in Nat BR because it it is really intense it's an intense brast so I like I say it really intensely and then the next one also gets very intense because of that because it becomes this contrast so you're like and all the good people help please bless them in all of these different ways this way and that way and that way and there's like all of the the like the commas the lists of things be start building on each other when if you're trying to say it with meaning then you're listing all these synonyms or whatever which usually we just you know just say them but if you say this to have a minion so close to my house and a regular minion and a minion where I know it's built in they start the same time every time and it's guaranteed pretty much that I have the aled there a few times where you know I had to give up the aled and I so what I did is I went to the aisle which is like 15 minutes away so sometimes though I I 90 90 to 95% of the time I D at kabad but sometimes I go to the O like today I went to the o and um you know the last is not kabad well you know it's it's interesting there's lots there's lots of types of people there um no but when I say kabad I mean kabat of the five towns so um when I D at the a so first of all the latest minion on a weekday in Five Towns kabad minion is is 7:30 and generally I'm the I'm the K at the 7:30 um so if I ever want to you know get a little bit extra sleep and do it at 9ine or 10 or whatever I have to go to the aisle so I've D in there a bunch of time shakas well other as well but primarily shakas when I need a later minion N9 or 10 today I actually D I think it was at at 11 um so what's interesting is I don't know if you noticed this and I don't know if you've been in this situation but it's very hard to get people to communicate clearly with you that they're part of your minion it's almost like they want to keep it secret like they don't want you to know and and I don't know if it's this sounds like this is only an issue if you're in a place where there are many minion happening right so exactly that was precisely the situation there's one minion in the front of the room I'm a minion in the back of the room there's 50 people in the room but you're not really sure who's in your minion who's in the other minion who's not in a minion at all um and and you need at least six people who are all at least going to say we going to say the am together and uh so I've come to sort of like not be so like against my nature this is against my I I've I've come to not be so nervous about it like if it feels like a few guys have committed to diving with me I just sort of roll with it um because it's really hard if you want to check at like each juncture like okay are you with me are you with me are you with me are you with me it's almost like people like avoid eye contact like they they almost pretend like they're I have no idea what you're asking I don't know if it's like fear of commitment they don't want to be locked in they don't want to be forced to have to stay to the end I don't know what it is but they make it really really hard to know that they're with you so I've just sort of kind of adjust usted myself to that that if it feels like people are with me they're probably with me I don't have to get a really clear response so like today what happened is was very interesting a guy comes out to me afterward it's like we had six guys right we had six guys so I said to him you know were you doing with me like cuz he's asking me we had six guys were you doing with me he's like yeah I'm like so I'm sure we had six guys cuz I didn't even know you were doing with me like you weren't even one of the six I was counting right so I'm sure and then he walked away and some guy comes over to me he's like you know that special that people say to you if you were thein I'm like oh you were doing with me he's like yeah yeah I was doing with you I'm like okay you're another guy I didn't even know right it's so interesting and and then another guy oh you ding with me there were three guys doing with me I didn't even recognize we doing with me um add that to the you know Five Guys plus me that I was sort of cognizant were doing with me I probably had 15 guys in my minion but if you would have asked me how many people can you say for sure were with you I would say three it's a weird thing have you experienced that yeah I I'm trying to figure out I well I haven't been in a place where that would be be the case I I can relate to the idea of not wanting to am answer a question asked to me not not wanting to identify being part of something I can like put project myself into that but I I wouldn't do that because I know how many work and I know you got to figure out the numbers and so I would I would be very clear about it so I'm trying to understand the psychology even before I had to be kazin and before I had to be in that situation I always would answer people clearly I would tell them no if I'm not with them I would say no no I'm not with you don't count me I'm not with you but I would communicate right it's it's very interesting I'll be like standing there looking around and like literally I know there's another five six guys who are with me who are not claiming it and they see me going and they're just right like all COI like alcoy like I don't get it I have zero insight into this aspect of human nature yeah I don't know what else what else have you experienced isn't it kind of cool to be like done doing so early in the day um this is going to sound bizarre to a lot of people uh but it's is going to sound familiar to other people but I go my entire day thinking about when I'm going to put on when I'm going to Dom and put on the filing like and then I remember that I already have uhhuh so it'll be like 4 p.m. and you're did I D today like oh yeah like yeah eight hours ago yes yes but it's so weird it feels like yesterday I know you're talking about yeah yes well I I'll it's particularly weird um if I am in a situation where I do doin later the next day you get like then you go such a long time without having Davin it's really weird and then especially having Davin minhan MV the earliest like do MV in the winter you know do Myra at like 450 or whatever it is 5 o'clock um and uh and then yeah you can just go a long time without doub do you have any recommendations for people who are in the year in morning in morning people recommendations for I mean not for like the emotional stuff I don't want to really go there right now I'm not really prepared for that but more like realized I want to get a t-shirt that says uh I'm not a morning person what with a u what with a u m o u r right right right I'm not a morning person yeah uhuh but the thing is I am a morning person this year yeah I've enjoyed not having to go to weddings that's not a problem for me I don't get invited to weddings so it this never comes up I get invited to tons of weddings and I kind of have to go but for a few people where I had like a social debt to them I would go for Thea and they would be very appreciative because they would know that I could only stay for Thea and then I was leaving now what's interesting is I would do that before as well and people were not appreciative right but now they're very appreciative oh you came from the even though you have to leave right after the ho yeah yeah you shouldn't make a big deal for the yard side um so that you can keep this going for as long as possible right because people will just kind of like lose track yeah so like don't don't like do a public thing commemorating the Ard side just let people think oh it must be still be going on by the way jfyi are you aware that T's first yard site is on chabus is it I thought I did the math and it couldn't come out on chabas it is oh man hold on a second so let's just calculate it right now wasn't it well your test chabas again yeah all right start practicing the shabas my father-in-law by the way um has had people come up to him on y sites and tell him I think somebody once came up to him and said said that was make me feel feel uh like I'm not alone and all of the embarrassing things that happen yeah any other uh do you want to speak about Larry Fine or anything like that because of my hair yeah or just because we we did it once and it turned out well in the past we've spoken about the three students when is Larry's y site by the way you looked it up I don't know we recently I sent you all of their all of are yard sides yeah but anyways yeah you look like Larry Fine no that's that's quite a high honor yeah he passed away January 24th 1975 so it's your out side is probably you know a few months ago it is a few months ago yeah because I told showed you somebody sent me an email and said that they had watched the uh Blood Brothers the one where we talked about mooseyard site and then he told me that there was another one coming up and shot so that's why we were looking into it then yeah so shout out to to that person yeah okay so you gonna get your haircut uh tomorrow you think some people have definitely commented people are yelling at me but I got like this like um long hair like uh music uh conductor kind of thing going now ducktail no I don't have a duck tail what like James Dean like a duck tail no h i have locks like a Shalom I know about aom's locks King David's son Absalom he had beautiful locks yeah that's how he died his hair got caught in a tree how he got snapped his neck oh no that's terrible yeah all right I don't have I ran out of interesting things to say I well I'll tell you one last thing that's been on my mind is I was thinking about Seasons because the seasons make me really like the the the winter makes me really sad um and I was thinking about um so now it's spring and I'm feeling really happy it makes me happy to the like spring and feeling the change of the season to spring makes me so happy that I don't have negative associations with taxes like that taxes should make me super stressed out and miserable but yeah um it like like I'll tell you just in contrast I was thinking a couple weeks ago I I hate filling out forms like I take my kids the doctor's appointments that make me f out an intake form and it makes me it causes me I ha it to and I I thought a couple weeks ago like a way that I could explain it to somebody that I realized would probably be jarring to people it would probably be surprising but I think it's true which is if somebody offered me to like at the doctor's office to endure physical pain or to fill out the form I would choose the physical pain like we'll give you a little cut what degree of physical pain well certainly more than zero like there would be an amount I don't know it wouldn't be unlimited but there would be a fair amount of physical pain that I would be willing to endure for say certain somebody took a whip like a cat of Ninetails Whip and had to whip your back your bare back once would you do yeah definitely it would draw blood it would make a welth and draw blood it would draw blood yeah and it would sting probably for a couple of days I would do it you would do it okay so that's okay now you understand you're not allowed to yeah no I understand that haa but nobody's made me that offer yeah okay um so I so I should hate taxes but because it's so associated with this with Springtime makes me feel very happy uh not the taxes don't make me feel happy spring makes me feel happy but like it it then I don't really get I don't I don't think I'm not I don't have dread thinking about tax season the season because the season makes me feel good and what I was thinking was um it's strange to me that like the the the par Torah portions we've got like all all the fun stuff in braus in the fall um and then like beginning of's fun story stuff and then second half of schmice gets really super technical he's super technical we've got one good story and it's heartbreaking in the second half of SCH just the K golden calf it's the most exciting story in the yeah but um so you can't really enjoy it right so I was thinking that that's interesting is and then and then going into the spring it gets even more technical even with like really double down on it with vro vro you have sacrifices and you have different YP of leprosy and Purity and impurity yeah it's very technical so it's interesting to not like it doesn't get expansive you might like I was realiz thinking about that that like it doesn't M seem like to me like it matches up with the seasons no but that's exactly the point when do you need some fun is in the fall or in the winter you need some great stories in the spring like you said you don't even mind taxes cuz the weather's great right so you don't mind learning about Tas maybe you answer and it B midbar I often feel like matches up with the season in a different way is because like it you're you're you're in the summer and it's starting to get a little bit kind of uh a little like it's not it's a niceness that you're getting used to and it's starting to get a little bit over like too much even though it's nice which is like to me the entire story of but midbar is bunch of people having like an amazing experience and being tired of it right complaining about yeah 40 years yeah So eventually I feel match this up yeah that's profound I really appreciate that Insight okay thank you so I I wish you luck on your on your haircut I'm a little bit nervous really honestly thank you very much about getting my haircut yeah you're like a like a little like a little kid no I'm not like a little kid who thinks it'll hurt when he gets his haircut I feel like it'll be a drastic change that because no seriously because my body has acclimated to the Len this length of hair if I suddenly get it cut it really could be a shock to my system oh wow yeah well I I am happy to offer you any type of support you need when you get your haircut I'm almost thinking we're like trimming it gradually okay yeah you can do that nobody says you can't
