Bimidbar 5770 - Intensifying Relationships - part 2
730 views
What is the significance of the fact that the Torah introduces the counting of the people of Israel by informing us that Hashem spoke to Moshe in the desert of Sinai and the mishkan? Why were the Levites needed to act as a buffer between the rest of the Jewish people and the sanctuary? Why was the tribe of Levi counted separately from the rest of the nation? Why did the family of Kehas, which carried the holiest vessels of the Mishkan have to wait until the High Priest and his sons put them away? What is the status of a non-Jew who learns Torah? What is the correct approach to our more intense and intimate relationships?

to jewish people
so then he is liable for death because
he stepped out of his relationship and
he tries to have a relationship which
doesn't pertain to him
let's understand this on a deeper level
and we'll see that this is actual
explanation for the entire torah for the
entire pasha i'm sorry that we find this
week
we saw that
the first thing that we said the first
question that we asked
was why is it that the levites the
levium they have a different they have a
different counting they're counted
separately from the entire jewish people
and we also pointed out that the levites
they are needed to be a buffer zone
between the jewish people and the
mishkan and what this really means is
that besides for the fact that you see
that there's a relationship between a
non-jew and god and the jewish people
and god it's a different type of
relationship besides that even within
the jewish people themselves there are
different levels of relationships you
have the jewish people as a whole but
you also have a very special part of the
jewish people they're called levine
those levites they have a more
sanctified relationship with hashem
they're the ones that are involved with
the sheriff's akaidesh they're
performing the special things that are
necessary for the mishkan for the
sanctuary
now when they perform that so they are
the ones and they only are the ones who
can perform that specific service
now that's the livium now what happens
if a jew regularly swell regular jew
tries to perform that service he steps
out of his bounds
god is saying the levites have to take
their place they need to perform their
service so that there's not an anger on
the rest of the jewish people if the
jewish people maintain their level their
relationship with god all is well but if
they try to step over their bounds into
a different area they're in trouble now
what's amazing here is not only is it
true in regards to the levites and the
jewish people but even in within the
levites themselves and even within the
special area the special family of kahas
they're the ones who are carrying the
most holy of all of the caleb of all of
the different parts of the sanctuary
nevertheless they couldn't overstep
their bounds either and in fact it was
only aaron and his sons who could
actually look at the arna kodesh the
holy ark only they could be the ones to
pack it up and if the levine themselves
were going to carry it they were so
exalted that they could carry it but if
they would look at it in an improper
time they would also lose their lives
they would step out of their bounds out
of their relationship they would run
into a great difficulty
so we see that there's different
gradations different levels and it's
essential in the torah is essential to
understand that we need to stay within
the bounds of our relationship and if we
it's amazing because if we indeed use
our relationship to its fullest extent
so one could think well this one is
different this this one is not as close
to hashem this one's a relationship it's
not in his intense it's not true what
you see is from the statement of the
gomorrah and sanhedrin that a non-jew
who is careful to fulfill his
relationship to the to the greatest
extent possible he looks and he learns
the seven minutes with the seven okay
laws so that he's like a calling he's
like a high priest who's able to enter
into the holy of holies and he's able to
access indeed the arena which no one
else can even look at
so a person focuses in on his
relationship and tries to maximize his
relationship with god to the best extent
to the greatest extent that's possible
so then such a person indeed is
equivalent to the holy of holies the
high priest that enters into the holy of
holies
now there's another aspect here that's
extremely important to understand and
this will help us understand another
dimension of this very idea
and that has to do with another medrash
that on the surface seems a little bit
difficult to understand but when we
understand it deeply it really changes
the whole picture here
and that is as follows there's a message
that says
that why is it that the torah says that
the
hashem speaks to moshe in the midburg
in the wilderness what's the
significance of the fact that god speaks
to motion in the wilderness and the
measure says a muscle gives us an
analogy there was once a king actually a
prince and this prince comes into his
medina into one of the great towns
in his country
and the people from this great town is a
very big metropolis and they come out
and they see the prince and they're so
scared of the prince they feel so
they're overwhelmed by the fact that
this prince has come they run away they
can't handle looking at the prince
the prince sees that they've left him he
goes on to another town he comes to a
more run-down area of his promise and in
this rundown area so the people see the
prince they're not at all threatened by
the prince they see the prince
and they come out to greet the prince
and they praise the prince and the
prince is so impressed with these people
he's so impressed with their honor for
him
that he says this is where i want to
place my offices this is where i want to
have that place where i'm going to
interact with the people because i see
that these people are extremely humble
and they want to interact with me says
the magistrates the same thing with
hashem hashem said when he came when he
came to the yam when he came to the to
the ocean it's interesting the choice of
an ocean i'll explain that in a moment
but it says that when he came to the
ocean it says
when the ocean saw it ran away it
completely fled just like when the
prince came into the large metropolis
they ran away they couldn't handle it
and the ocean is a place of a tremendous
amount of life
it's a tremendous amount of diversity
however when hashem came to the
wilderness when he came to the midfield
where there's no life where there's no
separateness where there's no there's no
egg in kite there's no sense of oneself
in a certain sense so that's where
hashem decided that he wanted to place
his mishkan he wanted to place his
all-maui he wanted to place his presence
and interact with the jewish people
speak to moshe and speak to the jewish
people
now with the deeper lesson of this is
actually contained in the negamar nadar
the kemar nadar says that kevin shaw's
when a person makes himself like a
wilderness
that he makes himself completely humble
in regards to everyone that he sees
the torah is given to him as a gift
now what this means is is that in order
for a person to have a relationship with
hashem
if a person lives in this great
metropolis he thinks he's so wonderful
he's so great he's like that yam full of
life full of separateness
so then hashem says
when there's a lot of gaiva when there's
a lot of egg
of thinking that you're great
that's not a place where hashem can
develop his relationship with you
however if you make yourself into a
midbar into a wilderness you make
yourself very humble so then
then that's a place where hashem is
going to rest hisheen is going to place
his presence and he's going to create a
relationship with those people
now what this teaches us is
is that the greater the intensity of a
relationship and this is something that
we can see in our own lives but the
greater the intensity of a relationship
the greater the necessity for humility
for example if a person has a co-worker
and he has a relationship with that
co-worker it doesn't involve a great
amount of self-sacrifice in in that
relationship it's not it's not such a
big deal to be a good co-worker to be a
good friend however to be a good husband
or good spouse or a good parent it's a
much more intense relationship and
because of the intensity of the
relationship it requires a much greater
level of humility and that's what we see
when hashem is coming down to arrest in
the world when he's coming down to
places his divine presence upon the
world upon the jewish people it has to
be specifically in a wilderness in a
place where there's no separateness
where there's no there's only humility
there's no god there's no pride
that's the place where hashem is going
to create the most intense relationship
with the jewish people and that's also
true in regards to all of these
different gradations these different
levels the more a person is connected to
hashem if it's just a regular jew so he
has a certain level but when you when
your niklas into a greater relationship
with hashem a greater intensity if
someone's a levite so he has to have a
certain level of humility and the
highest level of humility is the kind
god the high priest if a person enters
into a place where he doesn't belong so
then he enters into a tremendous danger
into place of death now what's amazing
is that we find that we find that you
can transfer levels where do you see you
can transfer levels of course the jew
can't become a regular jew if he's not
from the tribe of leave levy you can't
become a levite
and a lady can't become a coin you can't
increase in your intensity of
relationship but there's one place that
you can and that place is if a non-jew
wants to enter into a greater
relationship besides we're just having
the seven minutes the seven aha laws if
he wants to become a jew he has the
opportunity to take on 613 laws but what
happens there are three different
conditions that a person needs to take
on if he decides he wants to become a
jew
the first condition is if he's a male so
he has to have a circumcision he has to
have a bris the second condition is he
has to be titled he has to go into the
mick for the special ritual bath the
third condition is he needs to accept
upon himself all of the mitzus all the
commandments of the torah so what you
see is if you want to enter into a more
intense relationship with hashem so you
have to develop a greater sense of
humility and this is something that we
see with our relationship with hashem
the greater our sense of humility the
greater the intensity of our
relationship with hashem the more we
want to enter into an intense
relationship the more we required to
have a greater humility this is also
true in relationship to our
relationships in relation to our
relationships with our family with our
close family the greater that
relationship the greater the intensity
of the relationship whether it's a
spouse whether it's a child it's
necessary to have a greater level of
humility to lower our own egos to lower
our own pride in order to really enter
into a relationship with that individual
i want to bless you and me and all of us
hashem should help us to always be able
to have the humility that's necessary in
order to enter into that relationship
with him thank you so much for listening
have a wonderful shabbos
