Here's how to hire better employees. And
yes, I know something about hiring
employees because I own a recruiting
firm. We hire hundreds and hundreds and
hundreds of employees a year for
companies. And these are some of the
biggest tips that I have for hiring
great employees. And some of the biggest
tips I have for staying away from bad
employees. So, the number one thing that
we look for that strikes us on any
resume that we get is does the employee
hop around from job to job? If you see a
resume where that employee is at a job
every year, it is a problem. It means
that either a they don't know how to
commit or b their previous employers did
not see enough value in them to keep
them around. So number one, you want to
make sure that the employee is not what
we call in our industry a jumper. Number
two, do they have relevant work
experience? It's very difficult to train
people. It takes time, it takes money,
it takes energy, and you don't know if
that person's going to be successful.
It's literally like gambling. So, you
want to make sure when you're hiring
somebody that they have relevant
employment experience. What they've done
in their past is similar to what you
want them to be doing for you in your
company. Number three, you want to make
sure that you're paying your employees
properly. I was speaking yesterday to a
law firm and he was complaining about
his turnover. He said, "Why would people
come work for me if they can make the
same amount of money lifting boxes for
Amazon?" And I said to him, "That's
exactly the point. Instead of paying
them the same wage that they're going to
be able to get in some Amazon warehouse
where they're not going to have to use
their mind and they only have to use
their hands, pay them a little bit more.
Pay them an extra $10,000 a year and
you're going to get more quality
employees because they're going to want
to hang on to the job because the wage
is good. You cannot hire good people for
cheap wages. Good people know what
they're worth. And by the way, it costs
money. Every time you have to fire
somebody, every time somebody quits, you
have no idea how much money that is
costing your company. There is a hidden
cost in every business that very few
companies take into account, which is
the cost of firing an employee or an
employee that quits. It cost anywhere
from 10, 15, sometimes even $20,000 to
have to replace an employee. Why?
Because you paid them for the three,
four, five, six months that they were
with you. And now you have to go and
hire somebody else and train that person
for 3, four, 5, 6 months until they get
the job and until they're up and
running. Not to mention the lost
productivity, not to mention the lost
morale, not to mention the fact that you
are being frustrated because you don't
have a performing employee in that seat
that really needs to be filled. And
probably my biggest piece of advice to
you when you're going to hire great
employees is you have to ask them this
one question, most important question,
you have to go through their resume job
by job starting in chronological order
from their first job. And you have to
ask them every single job, why did you
leave? Why did you leave? Why did you
leave? I've never met somebody till this
day. I'm in the recruiting business. We
hire hundreds of employees. We interview
thousands of candidates. Nobody in my
life has ever been told me I left
because I got fired. They always said
because there was restructuring. They
always said because the company closed.
They always said because they didn't get
a performance bonus. Whatever it is,
nobody was ever fired. But the true the
truth of the matter is is people get
fired all the time. And you want to
understand why they were fired. You want
you want to understand what led to their
dismissal from that company because what
you will see is patterns. If somebody's
telling you for example, I was let go
because restructuring, dig into that.
Don't let them get away with that.
Understand what that means. Why did they
restructure? Why did your job become
obsolete? Why were you fired? Say to
them flat out, I know you say it's
restructuring, but really what it means
is that you got fired. Why did you get
fired? And you want to start to see all
of the patterns. People are people.
There is patterns in their behavior. And
you want to unlock the patterns of why
these people are being let go. In my
company, we are professionals at getting
to the bottom of all of these stories.
We are professional at understanding who
is a great employee and who is not. So,
when you work with us, we are able to
