Um today's program
>> is
>> um
>> good morning. Today's program is
divided into two sections. One is we're
going to talk about shy. What's a good
shy? What's a kosher shaer? What's
what's not a kosher shaer?
And the second section will be about
okay. So we'll go quickly through this
um part. Where doers come from? which
kind of animals the shaers come from and
the most famous shaer comes from the the
ram.
It's a It's good that people should know
what a ram looks like and what a ram
horns look like because once once in a
long while the question comes up where
did this horn come from?
99% of all shyers that are sold in the
market in the stores in the Judeica
stores are all from rams. There's a very
small number that come from goat. Mostly
they're not sold in generic stores
because they're more expensive. They're
sold only in specialty places.
So that's your basic rams one chaer.
You've seen that they're all over the
place.
Chaers also come from goats. And that's
a goat chafer.
They make a slightly different sound.
Some people find them easier to blow
because just how they're made. Their
their mouthpiece is a little bit
different.
Professional musicians who are used to
professional music pieces are like like
the um the goats chaically
a goat chaer probably it's cauter 100%
that's not the question the question is
whether or not it has the milo of
remembering
and it probably is not as
as a ram horn. So you you want to use a
ram's horn unless you feel more
comfortable blowing this then you would
um use a goat horn.
This animal here is the ibeck.
Ibex is was called in eur that's the
English name for it American name. The
European name for this was a Steinbeck.
Ashin a Steinbach Steinbach actually a
Steinbach is a is a mountain goat. A
stone buck is a goat. A stone goat. It's
a mountain goat. The Mishna in
Rashashana talks about the yo that the
the horn of a yo is a straight horn. And
Rashi says the yo is the stein book and
the horn is not very straight.
We'll get to that in a second. But the
mission says that there is on the hold
that's the proper to use. We don't pass
like that. The ram
better to use a ram's horn. But there is
a T in the mission that says to use the
horn of Steinbach. And the reason is
because it's straight. Look at the next
picture. Again, they're not very
straight.
But when you look at the horn itself,
the part that could be used for blowing,
it's not nearly as curved as the picture
before. I wouldn't call it ramrod
straight. I wouldn't call it super
straight, but when you compare that to
the picture that we saw earlier of the
of the of the ram's horn, this is a
straight horn. In comparison, this horn
is straight. It's not perfectly
straight, but it's definitely straight.
Look at that one. It's the same horn,
just a different angle. It does look
pretty much straight. And this, the
Mishna says, is a y posh. the straight
horn of a yol which the ta compares to
the picture we saw earlier the cough of
horn of a of a
um ibex horns are not very popular
they're not very common they do exist as
you see this one um this one I this
specific one I actually got the picture
from the to museum living tour museum in
Burough Park they had this horn and
that's where I took the picture
It's not a very popular thing to make a
shif out of ibex. They're very hard to
find, hard to get legally. It's very
hard to get one. So, you're not going to
find it in the stores.
Now, this animal is called a kudu. K U
DU. It's an kind of antelope in lives in
Africa, parts of Asia. And look at the
horns. Here's another kudu. This is
actually animal called the greater kudu.
And that has that familiar horn that was
sometimes called a Yemenite chaer. You
see the guy in in the postcards, he's
blowing this kind of horn. And
this horn is again it's kasha for cha.
It is kosher because the says
that any horn anyher
of any animal is kosher. That's the maba
says. But in order to get the mile of
the
and that the after the
found the the
you're not going to get this on the on
the on the kudu. One other problem with
the kudu is that the Rambam says the
Rambam says that the only horn which is
kosher is the Kev is the horn of the
Kev. The Kev is a sheep.
The Ram says this horn is not. Now why
the Ram says that that's
the T is about this. I'm not going to go
into that that background but and the
doesn't like the RAM
that all horns are kosher. But if you
had a choice between two horns, why
would you want to use a horn that the
Ram says is not kosher? I call upon him.
This is the horn of the kudu. It's a
popular horn. You see it around. They do
sell it. They they they're expensive.
They cost a few hundred dollars to buy
such a horn. And it's kasha. Yes,
they're different. The way you blow it
is different than how you blow a
regular. So people that are good at
blowing chaur might have a harder time
blowing a kudu.
This animal is the big horn sheep. The
big horn sheep is a kind of wild sheep.
Its horns are not very accessible.
They're very expensive if you do get one
legally. And yes, you could make a chaer
out of this. A friend of mine um
received a this as a gift. He traveled
in Europe someplace. He did a guy a
favor and the guy made him a chaer. It's
too hard and too sorry too heavy to
actually hold such a chaer and blow it
in shul on rasha. You couldn't blow you
could you couldn't blow that 100 times.
It's very very very heavy.
But it's a horn. It's a horn. It's a
sheep's horn. It's a wild sheep. It's a
wild A wild sheep is probably also
called a sheep. And therefore, it's
probably also
to use it for a shash. It's not
practical, hard to get. They're very
heavy, but it probably cost. Let's move
on.
This is a water buffalo.
Water buffaloos have been around in the
kosher market for a very long time. Um,
it's a kasher animal.
Water buffalo in is where the original
mozzarella cheese was made from water
buffaloos. The original real real
mozzarella cheese, not the kubai today
version, but the kubai in Europe is made
from water buffaloos. And it has very
large, very hefty horns. And you could
make a h a shaer out of it. And once
upon a time I had a water buffalo horn
and I considered making into a shaer
just to the stick of it. In the end I
just donated it to the living toy
museum.
Um what is the water buffalo in Hebrew?
So the parish on the every once in a
while the uses a unusual word and
there's a somebody wrote in parentheses
the t of those words in either Hebrew or
Yiddish.
Exactly who wrote it and when it was is
debated among the scholars but it's been
around since the second or third
printing of the notab's lifetime but the
printed after that it's been around for
a very long time in
the says there's an animal called
that the suffic
and therefore
with a um without a and the perish of
the says what animals the koi It's the
It's the water buffalo. That's the
parish says. So, this is the animal
they're talking about. I guess once upon
a time, people ate this animal.
This is a deer. Deers have a kind of
thing on top of their head that we might
call horns. If you're into your anatomy,
you might call it an antler. No
difference what you choose to call it.
It's not the same kind of material. It's
not the same kind of thing of the horns
we've been talking until now. All the
horns we're talking until now and I'll
show you pictures coming up soon are
made of two basic layers. The outer
layer called their sheath of keratene.
It's like the same kind of material you
know you're familiar with it at the
traers are made of and inside layer is a
bone. This is a antler. Antlers are
plain bone. Many animals that have
anththers also have a skin growing on
top of the bone, but it's basically just
a bone. There is no outer layer, no
sheath of keratin, which forms a chaer.
So the say that if you took a horn such
as this, the antler of an animal that
was solid and didn't have two layers and
you were to drill a hole through it and
make it into a a um a blowable
instrument, it's not kosher.
It's not kosher.
I'm going to say later there's a kumar
that we have to understand properly in
order to know why that's not kosher. But
we're going to get to that later.
Anyway, this is a plain old deer and it
has a antler on top which would not be
acceptable. Not be kosher.
How do you make a shaifer? So shaer
that's a goat head. That's the skull of
a goat. It's the two horns as they come
out of the head of a goat. Move on.
That's again a goat horn. It's been cut
off from the skull. And you see that
there's an outer layer. You see the ring
and then you see inside you see regular
bone. That's the bone. Take partly
coming out totally out.
That's the That's it. So the outer piece
the on this picture it's the top part.
That's the piece that you use to make a
shaurher. Any animal that you can use to
make a shaur has has these two parts. A
inner bone, which is what the part which
is attached to the head of the animal.
And that's what's really on tight. And
animals that use their horns for
fighting, whereas a weapon, it's on
pretty tight, and it's it's attached
very well. That animal can use it for
fighting and not injure itself.
And then there's the outer layer which
is the sheath of keratin which is called
chaer. What does the word chaer even
mean?
I know if you say if you say the put
they use the word to be shapier that's
they use in the puter is a Hebrew word
it appears in ksh and shapier is a araic
word and it's you're a python and you're
writing put that's an acceptable usage
of the word but that's not what the word
chaer means
chaer
is the idea of a shiferis a tube
meaning the word means the outer
coating. That's the T of the word.
You're trying to say that the word means
the outer coating. That's the simple T
of the word. It's the outer coating of
what? Of the bone that's inside it. So
using a we're using the outer piece. Any
animal that you make you can separate
the inside from the outside you can use
for and that's what the Gumar said and
that's what the said before that a deer
which only has we would call the inside
it only has the bone part you can't use
for good now what's the talking about I
said you have to know the says
if you let's go back a second
here if you take this picture and you
would drill you wouldn't remove that
bone piece like my next picture you
would take this piece there and just
drill a hole through it
is a you drilled a hole through the
that's called that piece in the language
is called if you drill a hole through
that it's the says it's
so you see I you left the bone inside
says
it's the same min it's it's the same men
as
It's not a okay that's great but but the
I'm not I have I'm blowing into the bone
but that says no you're really blowing
into the means means you're blowing into
the you're blowing into the
and the bone part is just not a but if
you just use the bone if I would if I
just use the piece over here in the
bottom if I just use the bone that is
not the chauffeer because that's not the
means the outer layer that's not the and
that's why it's not good. So if I going
back to the picture of the deer if I
only have a what's called the inside the
zak I only had that kind of piece only
had the bone and I would hollow that out
that would not be because there's no cha
part to be blowing in. Okay,
so this this is a common question of all
the phone calls I get about charis and
we're taking a quick second to interrupt
to make an ad for the books. On the back
table I have over here two books that I
wrote about chaer. These books are
primarily about how to blow the
fascinating books and you should take a
look at them. I also have the book I
wrote about everything you want to know
if you about when you're not the and the
third book I have in the back for sale.
The fourth book of is if you dash
it's the best out there. If you darland
or whatever any other glitzia it's not
going to work for you. If you digit it's
the best out there. Um we'll talk more
about that but anyway what makes apostle
so of all the questions that people call
about is they want to know how do I know
my is why my isple
and
there's one very short line about that
in the Mishna and a lot a lot a lot of
discussion about that in the so at the
end of the day what makes something a
puzzle it's not so many things that are
practical that you have to think about
and worry about on your personal
that might be kosher apostle. There's a
few examples of things that I took
pictures that most of these pictures I'm
going to show you now of I got from
Benny Atinger. Benny Atlinger was the
bakea in Bruyers Washington Heights for
about 50 years
and he wrote two books on his own about
charis and he is fascinated by cha and
he no matter where he goes no matter
what he does he's always finding
something interesting about charis he
might be on a on a cruise in Alaska I
don't know if he does such things I'm
making that up but if he'd be on a
cruise in Alaska he'd be on a remote
island over there he would find a shaer
and have an interesting story about it.
I know that because if you read his
books, he Yes. Over 50 years he had
thousands of questions and thousands of
interesting and things that came up that
he as many go ahead.
>> There's an animal called the prong.
>> Yes, he writes about that
>> and it it cipher every year and it's a
real cipher. It's got bone.
>> Yeah. Yeah. He wrote an article about
that was printed in one of the magazines
like 5 years ago.
>> Would that be
he wrote an article on that printed 5
years ago? I I don't remember which
magazine. I think it was Mishbah, but I
don't remember which magazine it was. It
was I think five years ago. If you need
his phone number, you want to call him
later, I can tell you. It's not in his
book.
Okay. What makes a what can go wrong
with a make a impossible? Well, the
first thing the Mishna says a cow's horn
is possible. So even though a cow's horn
meets all the conditions that aher that
we spoke about earlier, it's possible.
The gives a few different reasons why
the cow's horn might be possible. One
reason is because it reminds of the
that's the most popular reason. That's
the most well known,
right? It reminds of that. Okay, that's
one thing. But the also says I wish I
had my my my laser
that it looks like it's made out of two
pieces. It looks like it's made out of
two pieces. and
it looks like when you blow it looks
like you're holding two
which is a different case in a Mishna
that if a person put one inside another
depending on how he actually did it
there are some cases where that would be
possible and and therefore it's
on the horn of a that always looks like
it's made of several layers that it's
possible okay but anyway here you got it
here's the horn of a cow that looks like
it's made of two pieces. This was a
young cow, so therefore it's small. But
a bigger cow would have the same thing
just in bigger.
Okay. Um
this line, this line from the screen
um is interrupting my picture. I
apologize for that. Nothing to do about
it now. But right over here, you see um
actually maybe it's helpful that line
from the screen that it bicts a line in
the chaer. That line in the shaer is a
crack. Most likely the shaer fell. It
hit something hard from a high place and
it cracked. The chaer cracked. That kind
of crack I I I saw the crack. That kind
of crack goes all the way through the
layers of the chaer. layer it could be
um quarter inch thick could be thinner
it could be thicker and if the crack
goes from the outside always all the way
to the inside in that direction that
direction is the length of the direction
the is always possible that's the mish
says the bottom line said there's a lot
of discussion there the bottom line is
the says a crack like this which is a
lengthwise crack that goes from the
mouthpiece up from on the that would be
hidden on the left side up towards the
right um that would always be a puzzle.
Not all cracks are the same.
>> Here again, it's right around that line
in the um in the screen. There's a crack
going, we call it widthwise, even though
the angle of the sheaer doesn't let you
know that it's a widthwise crack. That
says it depend where on the sheaer it
is. If it's on the first teac which is
closest to your mouth the part the
person blowing it'll be pos
but if it's on the end of the towards
the top which is more than a teak away
from your mouth the picture is what it
is that's the picture I had available
but I don't I'm assuming that it was
probably more than a tak away from the
person's mouth so I'm going to take a
guess that this is a kasher the crack is
kosher not a problem because it's more
than more than a tap from the
mouthpiece. A B is that it's a widthwise
crack, not a lengthwise crack.
Okay, now this is a little bit more
complicated. Which kind of crack? Do you
see the crack over there? Right. It's
it's shaped like an L. Which way does
that crack go?
>> Right. So, what do you do with it?
So I have a I have a simple solution
practically how to save the and I maybe
I have pictures of that later but um
what do you do with it? Um I would
assume that understanding the reasons in
why the different kinds of cracks are
diff are um are one's kosh one's ple I
would say this is kasher
why what why what's wrong with a
lengthwise crack a lengthwise crack mish
says is going to continue to spread and
eventually your sha is going to is going
to split it's going to separate and
you're not going to have a shaer you
won't have a shaer left altogether so
therefore if it's lengthwise Doesn't
matter where it is, it might spread and
before you know it, there'll be in a
problem area and therefore it's always
possible even though it didn't spread
yet a width wide crack. If it spreads
and that part of the falls off the lower
part still will be the kasher and
therefore it's kasha. That's what she
says. This piece, if it would continue
to the way it is now, if it continue to
spread, it's going to spread um
widthwise. And even if the piece came
off, the rest of the would still be a
kosher.
>> Um
in the original, I have many more
pictures of this. In the original
picture, it definitely went through
here. I think this is the same. I think
this is the same picture. Yeah, it's
going.
>> Yeah, I think that's the same shaifer.
It's the same thing. It's it's going
through.
Okay, this is of the problems and cracks
in shaers. This is a common issue. This
is a very old chaer
probably. I mean, I know who the shaer
is. I know where it came from. It was my
mother's uncle cha that he bought from
Europe.
Um, and it developed a crack on the on
the tip. That's that's common old old
chase they can get just from age or from
getting banged up they can develop a
crack that's a lengthwise crack and
that's going to be a problem. So that
would be a problem. So what's the
solution for this crack? Sandpaper
take a sandpaper or a pen knife and cut
out the crack. So you're going to lose
about an inch of your I don't know maybe
that's maybe that's a quarter of an inch
eighth of an inch.
And a bigger problem is that the
mouthpiece of the chaer is designed to
make it easy to blow. And if I cut it, I
would have to um I would have to uh what
you call I would lose the mouthpiece. I
have to send it to a professional who's
going to reform the mouthpiece to make
it blowable. Um it's only worth it to do
that. It's expensive. It's only worth to
do that if it's your great uncle Shaer
that you brought from Europe or it's
your favorite Shaer or you like the size
or the color or whatever reason you it's
important to you. But the usually um
buying a new shaer is cheaper than
getting the mouthpiece fixed.
This is the same thing you see in the
top left. Hey, got a got a got a piece
over there nicked. So that's not a
crack. That's a nick. Nicks are not the
same as cracks. Nicks don't spread.
Therefore, nicks are cauter. This surfer
is cauter the way it is right now, but
it's be very hard to blow. It's going to
cut into the guy's lips, and that's his
business, what he wants to deal with it.
I would just say get a little bit of
sandpaper, smooth off the edge, and keep
and move on.
This this picture I took in the store.
That was a shifer that was for sale.
What happened to it after I took the
picture, I don't know. But
that cha is not cautioned to begin with.
Okay, two things at this picture. First
of all, you see there's a little nick in
the bot thing over there. That's again
that's a nick. That's not a crack.
That's kosher to begin with. But what
happened over here was that the chaer
had a bigger crack in it. That would
have been problem. The what the person
did was he took a very sharp knife and
he cut a
piece off the sha. This is the top of
the sha is now a little bit shorter than
it used to be. It's missing the fancy
design that it came with originally, but
the was kosher. Either he didn't do a
good job or he or another crack
developed another little bit developed.
But the bottom line is he took a pulleer
that had a crack in it and he cut off
the crack almost like a millilia would
do. He cut off the crack and now he
doesn't have a cracker anymore and it's
a kerifer. Okay, even that little bit
over there is not a crack. It's a nick
and nicks are not a problem.
This picture I got from Benny Atinger
and he found the shaer in some shul
someplace and you see it's full of
holes. Um worms got into the shaer. They
made holes in the shaer. Holes are not a
cashous problem of the
sometimes some if the hole does not
change the sound of the it's not a
problem. This now how do you how in the
world did you know if you discovered the
with the holes in it? How would you know
what the original sound of the Shaifer
was?
That's anybody's guess. But if you owned
the Shaer and you knew what it sounded
like last year and now you discover has
holes in it and the sound is the same as
it was before,
then it's kosher. Now, something
interesting about holes is that a hole
when it's there and it didn't change the
sound, it's kosher. However, if you fill
in the hole and you don't fill it inly
correct, meaning you use putty or
something plastic or something to fill
in the hole, that's a bigger problem
than the actual hole. That's again,
that's the same just close up on the
hole. That's that's another I got from
Benny Atlinger. And this one I got from
the person who is involved with the
onif.
This is one of the shaers that he found
that had something wrong with it. I
don't know. Nobody ever bothered
scraping out down to find out what the
real problem was because the picture
with the putty in it is worth much more
than knowing why whoever was put the
putty. But somebody putty inside the Now
if there was a hole and you stuffed the
hole with the wrong materials that says
that's a that is not possible. If you if
you saw if you close the hole with not
Minoi a different min that that is now
apostle. So this is possible. In fact
the person who who found who discovered
the who bought the he brought it to
and that's when the this is the story 20
years ago. That's when the got involved
with giving they didn't get involved in
it was this person and this that started
the whole thing about this is a story
about 20 years ago that's what he got to
get involved and and if you ask a guy
why do you need a so they're going to go
back to this story people know the full
story they don't know the full story but
they're going to go back to the story
that sometimes there are holes there not
it's not a common thing but they're
there go ahead If you put your finger
over the hole as you're blowing, do you
tell if it changes the volume, changes
the sound? I
>> I never experimented with that to know.
I'm not musical enough to know about
that.
That would be you have to be like a a
real musician to understand that. Okay,
let's go on. What's with that little
spot over there? You see it next to the
guy's thumb? So, I took this picture. I
wasn't sure myself if that is just a
discoloration
because chaers have discolorations and
they can have rough spots and they they
get banged and animals are in the wild.
They fight with each other. They do get
bangs and they do get like scars and I
wasn't able to tell. I I sent it to the
professional but the picture not the
greatest picture and I couldn't tell.
But the point of the point of the story
is does the problem exist? Yes. Do you
have to be alert to it? Yes. Is it a
prevalent problem? No. Meaning you could
go to a store, a regular Judeaic store
here in Muny, and you can look through
hundreds of shy and you won't see
anything that's a problem. And then once
in a while, if you spend enough time in
the store, you're going to find
something which is a problem.
>> If you have a hole and it's going to be
new, meaning you grind a little bit
another sulfur and a little crazy glue
when you stick it in.
>> No, without the crazy glue. First of
all, you don't need the crazy glue.
Second of all, the crazy glue itself
might be an iminoi. So let's leave out
the crazy glue. His question is if I
have a shaifer with a hole and I melt
cuz you mix you can boil a and it will
melt and it will come like glue and you
can cover it with paste. There is a
person in far away that used to do this.
You charge money for it. They did it. It
doesn't really really work because
eventually it pops off anyway. But some
people it's their prize. They want it
fixed. it's worth it to them so they can
patch with it. The answer is yes.
Practically the answer is don't waste
your time. You're going to spend a lot
of money. You're not going to get your
results.
>> So I have a question. That crack that
you're showing
>> the one in this picture.
>> Yeah. It might not be a You have to How
do you know when to the other side?
>> How would I know? Yeah. So the person
who that I would send it to has lights
like lights the kind of things that a
plumber might use like a light you can
stick inside a pipe and you can see
what's going on and you go look from the
other side and you hold you can hold it
up to the sun sometimes it depends what
it is you could feel it you can
sometimes if you know what you're
talking about you feel it you could
scrape it
>> how you were saying before where the
crack is the wrong way that'll be tussle
right
>> it's only if it's shows up on the other
side
>> that's correct it's if it goes through
and through cracks are cracks are a
prevalent issue and not every person's
going to find one, but it's it's a sh
that comes up um five I I hear the
question five times a year. Not
necessarily the shadows come to me, but
then that I hear the question a few
times a year cracks, but these things
are are much less common. Much less
common, but you have to be alert to it.
These are the topic of this part of the
program was what can make a sh apostle.
The answer is this is something makes
shel
>> crazy blue on top of the match.
>> Is that okay?
>> Okay. So that we're about to get to that
in a in a future slide. Um so let's wait
for that. So over here the problem was
that he sealed it with let's move on to
the next thing. This is another I found
in the store. Um, what's that stuff?
That white stuff. It's looks much worse
in the blown up picture on the screen
than it looked in real life. In real
life, I wasn't sure if it was just a
discoloration. The I mean, eventually I
decided that it was a problem. But when
I first saw it, I wasn't clear it was if
it was a discoloration or if it was
actually somebody put something in to
seal the
>> hal.
Right. Right. that that for sure not
that. Um I have another picture of the
same thing. There's two different things
over here. One is the right side of the
picture. You see the white area here
which may have been putty. And over here
you see in deep inside the tag. So it's
two different things. The putty if it's
putty it's putty. It's a problem. If
it's the the tag in the back means that
the guy who drilled the shaer made the
mouthpiece was not very competent and he
didn't clean up after himself. And this
is not such a uncommon thing. Cheaper
sha
um often have these little tags. In
fact, I'm going to give you take a break
for one second.
And that's so
a tag. A tag is not puzzle. Those tags
hang are not puzzle. It's just it just
interferes with the quality of the
sound. If you care that your should
sound like a balta that people can go
home and say we had a balt and sura knew
what he was doing or that sounds like he
was a frog. So that's that that little
tag is going to interfere. You know, a
whistle. Things blow like a whistle
because they're polished.
This little toy would get rid of that
tag. And also, I can use this to polish
inside of your when inside the is
smooth, you can hear the sound, the
difference in the sound.
Another thing that can make the
impossible is if it's too small. The
Mishna it's brought in that it has to be
a that's 4 in.
That's more teac is 4 in. That sha is 4
in because coin to the um Oh, sorry.
That horn is 4 in. It's not a I
apologize. If you cut off the tip to
make it into, you're going to lose part
of it. And even though right now it's 4
in, that's good to
um you lose a little bit. So you you
might still have a
but then you have to deal with your
about what the share is. My
understanding was that when you hold the
chauffeur like to whatever degree the
chauffeur has to
>> there is a lotion like that in a
>> you hold the chauffeur in your hand and
you cannot see from either side that
there's a chauffeur there
>> right the guy for his hand
>> right that's that is there
brings but
is no
this as you can see one side of it was
painted and it also has a hole. So the
hole we spoke about already, but
do it
the um the paint the says not to paint
the because putting an a something on
the outside of the he says specifically
paint I know what kind of paint they use
in time but the paint could alter the
sound of the and if it alter the sound
of it's possible. So that's what the
says. So even though
how often does the paint alter the sound
of the chaer our paint I don't know um
mosters and I'll show you in the next
picture mosters come with some kind of
sticker whether it's a hexra sticker or
an advertisement for the company um
what's the deal with a sticker but the
makab have the same problem with
stickers if you had a problem with paint
we have the same problem with stickers
most are polished
Most are polished. It means they take
some kind of putty and they rub it or
wax and they rub it onto the surface of
the chaer. Is that a is that is that the
same problem? So obviously not because
95% of all commercially available are
polished.
Okay. Um but there's a difference in
polish which you can't feel is not and
paint which you could feel would be a so
I can hear there should be a difference.
So your question earlier about um about
um crazy glue. If you covered the with
crazy glue what would the deal be with
that? So that would depend on how you
deal with stickers and this how do you
remove stickers? So the stickers of the
the ones that the put on are meant to
stay on that you can't take it off and
move it on to you can't that it
shouldn't fall off the cha you can't
remove it from the and that you can't um
put on to a different chaer. So the way
you take off stickers from shaers is
WD40.
>> They look nicer. I I don't have with me.
All the shaers here are polished. I
don't have here with me my unpolished
strafs. They look different. It looks It
looks off.
>> Um
>> I don't know the difference in this
house.
>> I don't know the difference.
>> Aesthetics.
>> It's it's purely aesthetics.
>> What you pay more for? Polish. All
surfers are polished. All
>> All anything you want commercially.
>> I can blow.
>> Okay.
>> Buy the cheap one from Bingo.
>> If it has polish on it,
>> it's not a it's not a on your lip
because in polish is not a
It doesn't It sure doesn't change the
sound. For sure not.
>> Okay.
But most commercial chaers have a
sticker on them. And if it has a
sticker, I advocate to remove it. Not
just because it looks ugly, but because
I have a have concern about it. And
therefore, the way to remove it is with
WD40.
Okay. The next
part of this of this slideshow is about
mouthpieces. What the people who make
shaers know and the people who do shaer
training know but the people who sell
shaers don't know is that every shaer
has a different shaped mouthpiece.
Why do they make shaers with different
shaped mouthpieces?
Because just like two people don't smile
the same way. Everybody's lips curl and
curve differently.
Everybody's lips will match better with
different kind of sha. And when one guy
tells you, "This sha is a great chaer.
Put on your lips. It will blow
perfectly." And the other guy says, "I
can't blow a sound out of it." They're
both right. It had to do with not the
but with their lips.
And you could go, you want to blow, it
could be like you're sitting in the room
right now, you're saying, "I never got a
sound out of a shaer." It the problem
might not be you. It might be you always
been trying on your father's cha, the
one you got for present, and that's just
not the right shaer for you. There's um
about 10 or 15 different shapes of mouth
pieces. I have pictures of like six
different shapes and just to give you
just just to give you the idea that
different mouthpieces of the sha are
different and it makes a difference in
how easy it is for you to blow.
Makes a difference how easy it is you
blow. I I have this all the time. people
come to training and I carry a whole box
because I have 10 different shapes to
try out what what what um what works.
So just look at the different different
shapes. You'll see that they they're all
different.
>> What's the one the same there's the same
and different all apples are apples. No
two apples look the same. that all
mouthpieces are are more or less
mouthpieces, but no two are really the
same.
And it's on purpose that way because the
people that make the know that what I
just the secret I just told you that
different people's lips um form
differently. Okay, I think that was the
end of this presentation and it's
11:15. We're supposed to get a few
minute break between till the next one.
Um any questions?
If it's a wider mouth piece of how much
hair you have to put out or
>> it might make a difference. Yes. But the
wider mouth piece is for the guy who
appreciates it and the narrow mouth
pieces for the guy who appreciates that
because yes, people naturally blow
harder and softer and people naturally
blow bigger holes on the lips and
smaller holes on the lips and yes
there's a lot of things that go into the
and if you want to know the entire it's
all there in the book.
>> How's it?
>> One second. Is it a rambomifer?
>> The ram there are people who call it a
ram sha. They have a lot of other names
for it depends on who's marketing it.
But there's no in the ram that such a
exists. It's it's somebody's imagination
that the raom says such a thing. It's
imag purely imagination. There's no
place in the ra talks about it.
>> The raom I'll tell you the raom says the
ram says you have to use a sheep's horn
and all the horn is kosher. So this
person who's no longer alive, he died
about 25 years ago decided that if the
ram hold you have to use a sheep's horn.
It must be you have to use a sheep sworn
exactly the way it grew on the sheep.
>> Go ahead.
>> They do.
>> They do all kinds of things to it that
they don't tell you about. Next.
>> Yeah. I write I bought a shifer that had
a bad on it.
>> No. And it was a very expensive shape. I
was very excited.
>> And
>> and then I took off the badat sticker
and under it there was a big nick.
>> A nick. A nick or a hole.
>> It looked like No, it looks like
>> it didn't go through.
>> It looks like a like a thing. So
>> someone was saying that the guy was on
purpose. He put it there so that
>> so that I shouldn't see. But someone
else said maybe they put it there to
tell you that they're capturing it.
>> They want you to know that it's kosher.
I
>> I don't know your specific story. I do
know that the people that I deal with
that are the people behind theat
they're not they're not theats they're
importers but they import
are very people they would never do it
to trick you and if you bought it from
that person and you'll tell me private
later 100% you should bring it back to
him and he will definitely change the
for you no question
>> probably like that
>> that's your decision
>> the thing is Professional decay.
>> Go ahead.
>> Is it a different
>> 100%. The professional decay is because
he has his favorite chaer. And I
happened to be me this morning. I was in
a show this morning and they needed to
blur and I refused because I don't want
to ruin my reputation and take the and
it'll take me three tries and to get it
right. That mean I'm gonna ruin my
reputation that I can't blow. No, I
definitely I didn't do it. Yes. And the
guy who did volunteer, he took him three
tries until he got it right and he broke
and he messed up on the shows because he
wasn't his favorite chaer.
>> Does it change the actual sound any
mouthpiece?
>> I don't know. I never I never took a
shifer and changed the mouthpiece to
know if it would be a different sound if
it was a different mouthpiece. Different
shies make different sounds. Absolutely.
You can
>> Is that what is that or not? Really?
>> I don't know. I don't know. The answer
is yes. Change the mouth, it changes the
sound.
>> Okay.
>> You change the shape of the chauffeer,
you can change the sound.
>> That's for sure. The shape of the
definitely plays a role. The length of
the thickness of the walls, the the
opening, the w the the opening of the
bell, those things definitely make a
difference.
>> The
between a hole and a crack or even
foolish. So, what's the difference
between if they're both
shape?
the shape. It's a long mishabur. It's
not an easy read. I grant you that. But
that makes that difference that the
problem the difference is that a crack
is going to continue to spread and a
hole because it's it's circular it's not
going to spread.
M R says this.
>> Is there is there this is not really
this is more is there a like if I had a
choice I'd show you first to use small
not real but like like like what a set
you can see on both sides versus a very
large one and the sounds are pretty much
the same to use a bigger one.
>> I would recommend you use one that you
can blow better.
There's no difference in the size,
shape, color. Doesn't talk about this.
>> Is there related to you like white
versus the dark?
>> It doesn't say in
Okay.
Okay. I'm going to take a few minute
break because we're going to start again
around um 11:30 the next program.
I think most
>> theers in the box are also for sale.
Anybody like the
>> guy
this guy is
>> meaning
>> cousin.
>> A cousin.
>> You didn't talk about actual You
shouldn't talk about the sounds, right?
>> No, that was not today's topic. I've
done that here many years ago. All
right. I see you took the pictures from
the book.
>> That's correct.
>> You ask permission from the author.
>> Um, yeah. Hopefully I
>> How much how much is
>> the is 35?
>> How much?
>> They're between 80 to 100. Every here is
if you buy in a different store will be
in the range of 150 to 200. But many of
the shaers, the reason why you ended up
with them have something unusual about
them. Like this one is very thin. You
can if you see you can see your fingers
through it. So it's not no good. It's
the reason if you drop it something it's
much it's much easier to break such a
shaer.
>> Therefore
if it says puzzle probably it is I
imagine that it has a crack over here.
>> How much money is it? There's a crack
right over here, which means there's a
little bit of sandpaper and I can tell
this one is not for sale, but because I
can fix it for I can fix the I can take
off the with sandpaper. I can take off
the crack and I'll have a cautious
shower. Oh, one second. There's a crack
over here. Maybe this is the No.
>> So,
>> no, this is nothing.
>> No, there is a hole. Oh, no. There is a
hole. There's a regular hole over here.
>> It's a hole that cannot fussly set.
>> It's not. Look at Look at it. It's It's
a crack. It's a
>> You can fix it.
>> For this mouth pieces, I found the best
thing is a wire wheel.
>> You can fix it.
>> A wire grinder.
>> Yeah. Yeah. A wire wheel. Not Not a
standing.
>> No. Wire wheel just smooths it very
nicely.
>> Okay.
>> They're pretty hard. And the wire wheel
is pretty hard. And you just twist the
knife. You don't shove it in. Twist.
>> Crack on my shelf.
>> I bought a bunch of bingo chauffeers and
they all come with the mouthpieces are
really sharp.
>> Yeah.
>> You don't spend much time cleaning them
up. So I took them all on the wire wheel
and cleaned them up so they're nice and
they don't cut your lips every time you
touch them.
>> You have to have the same shame. You
have to do the same stuff.
>> No. No.
>> No. Most choices are made by glam.
>> Also I found that this polish
>> they hit it with a buffing wheel.
>> The same stuff you polish with.
>> The spinning buffing wheel. They just
>> Yeah, I know.
>> There was a crack right over here.
Right. Right over here.
>> So we cut this out.
>> We did a pretty good job.
>> No, we also made the We also made the
things. That's my brother.
>> I know, Levy. I know. I'm working with
him. I'm We're straightening out the
show first. So, you have Yak show first.
>> How you cut it off with a knife? With a
knife?
>> No, he didn't straighten this one.
>> Did you straighten this one?
>> Straighten this. He cut. I'm not letting
him do it.
>> I cut it off with a knife.
>> He cut it. Yes. Come
>> out. Dremel.
>> How you cut it out with a knife?
>> A Dremel. Dremel.
>> What? What's
>> Oh, here. I see. I see. Right here is
the
>> Yeah.
>> And if I have This is putty. This is
what?
>> No, that's part of the sh it's it's it's
>> part of the original. Yeah. That's
normal. That that was my shy lift that
if that picture I've seen this or that
it looked different.
>> Why is it not so common that the
regulator
>> Why is it not common to use it? Says
he's supposed to use
because
what are the twisty ones?
>> They're called kudu horns
>> orite horns. They don't
the real the the the
in itself I in t in being a Yemenite in
that way there's two different schools
is that you call them the ones like the
more traditional ones and the more in
Yemenite not in Yemenite more modern the
traditional ones would never use such a
>> would never use a twisty
>> no
>> who uses twisty only
>> only the the more modern people
>> everyone
Yeah.
>> No, no, no.
>> These they came from the same person
that sells the
but I told you why every one of them had
that he didn't want to sell it to the
regular people. So I'm selling it here
for half price.
>> What's the reason why they don't they
don't they don't use why do they
>> why they da that's all they had
available.
>> Uhhuh. I know just a minute.
>> And how much are these?
>> These are between 80 to 100 depending on
>> continue please. I didn't mean to.
>> Um my son-in-law
>> Yeah.
>> is Benny's cousin.
>> Okay.
>> Now are the prices listed on the on the
>> No, no, no, no, no. On this far
>> on the books. Yeah.
>> Oh. Oh.
>> I have two questions. What are the
prices? Can you take zel?
>> I can take zel. The phone number is in
the is in the front page.
>> You're going on the phone number, not
the email from the
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And and the um and it's 25 for
>> I have the um rectangular one.
>> The one the one that the cover
>> I have the white cover.
>> The white.
>> Let me pull over.
>> What's the What's the best
you can?
>> This is how it comes off the sheet.
>> Which one is um the cab? The caber is
only on blowing becoming a master about
like you're running for 500 people and
the other one is everything else about
chaer. Look at the cover. Everything
else listening buying tips mistakes.
>> Which one?
>> The black cover.
>> The black cover is everything else.
>> Yeah,
>> this this is a bang. I mean something
happened the way it got banged and it's
got mushed. That's it's regular but
banged up.
That's maybe why out of it and you never
know the difference.
>> Yeah, that's I just use sandpaper.
>> But it doesn't affect the color.
>> Exactly. Why that that wouldn't affect
>> So there's a dude on YouTube
or whatever.
>> I don't sure that a Chinese dude make
sure I make sure that it doesn't get um
>> make sure doesn't get dirty.
>> No, no, no.
>> There's a cake over there. I want to get
rid of this
garbage. I just want to get the garbage
out of the way.
Give me a favor.
>> Once it gets vibes, I can't sell it
anymore.
>> I have to wait for the cash.
>> There's a dude I saw YouTube video makes
the mouthpieces.
>> I'm never going to be able if I get
down. I don't
>> actually
he blows. They take a little tool and
>> he blows again. Yeah. And he blows
again.
>> So there people that do it right here in
Muny.
>> Yes. So my friend, his brother
Ben is your uncle.
Third cousin
great
by the way first cousin. My first
dime. No,
>> you're also salt box
>> on the side.
>> How to
make this up,
but
>> that's from the lane.
This is part of the part of the
>> Yeah, it's going to eventually come out.
>> You see it's starting to come out. The
little hole behind it. It's going to
start to come out.
>> When it comes out, you're going to have
to use sandpaper to fix it. That it
should be smooth or use this to fix it.
>> That might be the why the was given to
me. The whole box of that are like uh
something epic something wrong with it.
You mentioned about stickers. Initial
they put on just cuz I guess they don't
want to get lost
>> on or during the L.
>> I see it now. I don't know what they use
on now. It's not saying it's
>> so come back. Come back. Come back and
ask what they do on
>> the I don't know. I didn't see that
specific sticker but in in general I
would I would Yeah, I would think.
>> Try to find if you want. I can try to
general even though you're doing I
wouldn't even put tape on it. Do I have
like masking tape or anything? That's
nothing.
>> May I ask you what it mean? If it's blow
on the big side, it's not allowed to be
there. What mean?
>> It's not your problem. You don't have to
know how to blow it.
>> What?
>> It's not your problem. You don't have to
know how to do it.
>> Not so many people even even try to
figure it out because
you can't do it anyways.
>> But I'll tell you the shot really. The
shot really is he didn't blow from here.
He cut it over here. Yeah.
>> And the this is a he cut it over here
and he blew from this way. And this side
this side is the same.
>> Yeah. A lot of a lot of I'm talking
about what he as
they squeeze it right that say that but
that's not not all say I'm saying I'm
saying a shot that works according to
other that don't say he changed it.
>> Good morning. How are you? First, I want
to wish
you
>> I don't have I don't have money yet.
Come back yet.
Even if you're doing it for
it doesn't get lost. It's not there's no
at all to put something on it.
>> Oh, no at all. If you want to know if
you ask the what what head do they have
he has to put the sticker on it doesn't
say on the sticker you have to take it
off before you blow
>> it doesn't say it so
they might tell you that this is not the
same as
they might tell you that I don't know I
never asked them but is putting the
stickers on put the stickers on these
are big Jews and they don't write on the
stickers take it over before you blow
>> really be a big big issue they probably
would write
>> obvious that's that's what I would
assume But they they didn't ask my
opinion.
>> And what if 11:30 something?
>> Does it ever happen that a shape blow it
grows an animal the other way that it's
smaller or they all grow?
>> It's not definitely not a normal
situation. If it happen then you would
be able to blow from the other way or
>> you wonder if it's physically possible
to blow from the wrong side from the
white side. People do it. It won't sound
Are you supposed to blow from the side
that's supposed to
>> Yeah. Yeah. That's
>> That's what What if I say the bad side
is happens to be bigger than
>> So you'll have a hard time.
>> Show them what you look familiar.
>> How what we where do you know me from?
>> I don't know.
>> I don't know the answer.
>> How much have these books?
>> 35
>> 22.
>> Oh, one second. This is the same.
>> These are these are 35 each and this is
22.
>> Okay. So, let me put
>> Is there any of the books free?
>> Free. Nothing is free. So I can't have
anything as a gift?
>> No. No.
>> They're all They all They all full price
>> on main.
>> Actually, I want you. We want to go
here.
>> About relaxing uh things before you blow
the shaer.
>> I'll be there in a second. Yeah, I'm
listen I'm listening to it here for air.
Go ahead.
>> No, it's fine. It's that for every
person. If I hear a the face turns red,
that means he's not blowing it right.
Not the right choice for it. Right.
>> No, it means it's not blowing properly.
That's not blowing properly.
>> That's not blowing properly. The face
>> you're not.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> No. Now
>> according to at least according to the
schedule they sent me.
>> Okay.
I see it doesn't have any English.
>> It does not have English. It doesn't
need English. It's such a smooth read.
It's like a pleasure to read it. Reading
it. It's so easy to read. You'll see
>> because
you'll see if you if you basically go to
regular t you'll you could you can get
through with this. Also, I don't have
time to right now. I want to move on.
Okay.
Okay, good morning.
>> According to the schedule, we're
supposed to move on now to the next part
of the program. And
um again, thank everybody who bought
anybody who bought things and they're
available all the different things on
the is available for sale and
you can have a chance to look at it when
I'm done.
This part of the program is supposed to
be about ESRIG. The goal is to explain
what an ESRIG is supposed to look like.
In order you should know what to look
like, look for this. I'm only I'm not
going to go into super duperim. That's
not the purpose of here. It's just
understand the basics of what anarch
looks like that you can learn afterwards
and come up with your own decisions what
you want to buy.
We're going to start.
This is a picture of the of the paradis
in Bamesh. Right outside Bish. You're
going from the back side Bish. You pass
the paradis on the left side of the
road. Um this is a picture of that
paradise.
Let's let's go into the paradise.
The first and most interesting part of
the esrig part that gets the most
attention is the pitum. How does a pitum
develop? What is a pitum?
So this is your ess blossom growing on
an ess tree over there in bish. No
difference. And see the different parts
of the pitum. Let's go. Let's go look.
Let's let's zoom in on that blossom a
little bit. That yellow line pointing at
the green tip is what's eventually going
to become the pitum.
And the red arrow point at the green
line deep inside the blossom is the area
that's eventually going to become the
assri.
Um what happens what happened over here
before this in the previous picture was
just the pitum came out of the blossom
and that's where the bees come and they
put their pollen and they get the whole
thing going. That's how the fruit
develops.
And once it starts to develop, the
pitimum grows first.
