B.P. Shomrim volunteers were recognized by the NYPD's 115th Pct for helping apprehend gypsy scammers

parts of Queens is uh people will pull up in a SUV generally a rented SUV and uh they will approach an elderly person or someone that they see wearing uh jewelry nice chain like I see a chain here they come up and they say uh you know I'm I'm looking to for a food store can you help me find the food store and the person says you know yeah of course go down junction go to junction 37 and there's a food store and they say thank Thank you so much for helping me. Can I give you a hug? Now, when they give you the hug or some different version of this, but this is what we see often. When they give the hug, they take your jewelry off or they say, "Uh, thank you so much for helping me find the food store. I want to give you a chain." They'll take a chain, they'll put it on your neck. While they're putting this chain on your neck, they will be taking your actual gold, $4500 an ounce gold, you know, from you. And then they're quick to get away. So, uh, a couple months ago, we had, uh, one of these scams take place here. We were able to, uh, get video and get a plate. Um, we had, uh, one of our inspectors from the burrow, inspector I think, who, uh, gave this plate information to, uh, the shore and patrol. Shore patrol put this uh, plate into the LPR system. They have an LPR system like us. That's license plate reader. Sorry for the abbreviation, but um so they put it in the system and sure enough, a day later, they get a hit. They start following the vehicle. They call me, they call the SEO of uh the 6o, the 66, all the other uh um uh precincts in uh Brooklyn South there. Uh we all coordinated. Um they followed the vehicle. Uh we were able to send a a police car of uh officers in uniform. They ultimately stopped the car. Um they pulled the car over and uh they found multiple pieces of jewelry, multiple fake IDs. The individuals in the car were arrested and uh they were later rearrested for uh multiple scams for doing this to uh many elderly people and uh you know people that you you just really don't ever want to see. Uh you probably like that. So come on up.
