What are you allowed to do next
to the light of the Chanukah
candles? Haneirot Hallalu Kodesh Heim- We want
the light of the menorah to tell the story of the
miracle of Chanukah and not be used for anything
else. And therefore, if the lights in your home
are on, you're allowed to do anything because
you're really using the lights in your home.
However, if the only light in the room comes from
the Chanukah candles, even if there is a shamash,
we do not use it for anything that requires light.
So, we don't read next to the candles. We do not
eat next to the candles. You should sit next to
the candles and enjoy the glow of the light and
remember the miracle. The shamash is lit so that
if somebody accidentally benefited from the light,
it wouldn't be a disgrace to the Chanukah candles.
And that's because the shamash is not actually one
of the candles of the menorah, its light is
permitted. And therefore, it's possible if
you benefited from the light of the menorah,
you only needed the light from the shamash.
