Rabbi Yseph Haim of Baghdad is commonly referred to as the Benanishes High, also known as the Beneskai after his magnum opus on Jewish law. This great sage who lived during the 19th, late 19th and early 20th centuries gained world renown for his scholarship and piety. In addition to the Benesh High, he was the famed author of numerous works. These volumes are considered classics and can be found today in thousands of Jewish homes, synagogues, and yeshivot throughout the world. It is related that out of their deep respect for him, several important members of the Jewish community of Aleppo personally escorted him all the way to Jerusalem when he traveled to the land of Israel in 1869. It is thus with great pride that the sparic heritage museum presents burkata birkat a work of this great hakam's naval on the hum and p abot the writings that comprise birkat hara were generously provided to the sparic heritage museum by the Iraqi national archive and here's the punch line this precious work was found in May 2003 by a team of American soldiers in the flooded basement of of the Iraqi Intelligence Building in Iraq. Thanks to the resourcefulness of the United States government in preserving these manuscripts, we are able to share this monumental work with the public. These precious materials were found submerged under 4 ft of water in the basement of the Iraqi intelligence headquarters in May 2003. By the way, this is when uh Bush attacked Iraq, right? Looking for weapons of mass destruction, which as far as I know, they never found. But believe it or not, they found in the basement of this intelligence uh building headquarters, they found 2700 manuscripts from the Beneskai that never saw the light of day in his ka mameish that had never ever been printed. Now they found it submerged under 4 ft of water. The National Archives and Records Administration made herculean efforts to conserve these soaked and moldy items. We could have never recovered them, but they have access to technology. This was the United States government and the military, and they literally did whatever they needed to do. They gave full access to their technology to be able to uncover this. And it is only due to their efforts that these precious writings can be studied today. The Sparic Heritage Museum is most grateful to them for these monumental undertakings and looks forward to disseminating more of these priceless manuscripts to the public.
