Sometimes, we can make one phone call or
send one text that connects somebody
that is a life-changer for them and took
us 5 seconds. I hope that the people
listening and watching know
whether their immediate local rabbi or
there are others, but there are people
who care and who have experience and who
have connections. One of the most
enriching part I find of the rabbinate
is our rolodex. For young people
listening, that means the contact
information of other people. But but
sometimes, we can make one phone call or
send one text that connects somebody
that is a life-changer for them and took
us 5 seconds. The gratitude almost feels
undeserved because all it took was like
a text. Can you see that person in your
office they can't get through? Can you
take on this case? Can you? But we're
here. I mean, rabbis are here and until
your rabbi proves otherwise, give them
the benefit of the doubt. Don't complain
about it if you've never tried.
Ask them if you can have coffee. Meet
them for lunch. Ask for an appointment.
Linger after shul and say hello or
shalom aleichem. Show up at a shiur
which becomes community within community
and builds a chevra. Go on a trip if a
trip is advertised. Not everybody can.
But that's exactly where those
relationships are formed and you have to
put the time in in advance so it'll be
there for you when you'll need it.
