The last telegram of the Rebbe, I don't
know why,
have I got a call to me with the middle
of the day.
I should come and prepare. I didn't want
to ask him why the guy is not doing it,
whatever it is.
I came back. I was working at time in
Williamsburg. I came back
and I prepared
based on whatever I had spoken at time.
A normal type top without the Rebbe
having to cross it. We know already from
from from from different uh
michtavim.
From that telegram,
the Rebbe was makia added tons
of stuff.
I'm Yossi Chaim Ein. Welcome to Among
Chassidim by Their Hair, an ongoing
fabrengen about life as a Chassid, our
vibrant connection with the Rebbe, and
inspired living shaped by the way he
teaches us each and every day.
Shalom Aleichem.
Reb Hershel, how are you? Baruch Hashem.
Thank you very much for being here.
Welcome.
So, there's a lot that I want to discuss
with you
with the hanachos, with mymorim,
michtavim klalim.
There's a lot of involvement that you
had.
I guess a little bit behind the scenes.
I don't know if how many people know
about it. So, therefore uh I'm glad that
you're here. My first question for you
is
where were you coming from? When did you
get to the Rebbe? How did that happen?
Yes, uh I was born in uh Paris.
I lived in Aubervilliers. At the age of
5, I moved to
a little shtetl called Yerres, walking
25 minutes from the Yeshiva in Brunoy.
>> [clears throat]
>> In um
the end of uh taf shin lamed aleph,
1971,
I went to the Rebbe was officially was I
was going for
cheder shlishi, taf shin lamed beis. I
came here chof av.
Elul, uh it was shnas hashivim.
I stayed here. Uh lamed beis, lamed
gimmel. I was in Morristown. About
Kislev
Tavshin
lamed daled
I was already in Crown Heights.
And that's when I um
started getting involved a little bit in
the sichos.
I
>> [clears throat]
>> I in the building of 784-788, the
buildings next to 770.
Uh upstairs there was uh an office. I
think later was uh used by uh Yossi
Kasan
al alav hashalom.
And uh this was the office of the
sichos, and I would type up here and
there
the
Chavrei Havod lanachas tamim the old one
would bring a sicha that they finally
got ready
to type and to publicize it. They'd ask
me to type it.
So, what what was the seder? So, the
rebbe would bring them Shabbos, let's
say. So, in this chazara When is this
all happening?
No, this In those years, Shabbos
farbrengens were about for instance
lamed bais, just Shabbos Mevorchim.
Maybe one more, Yud Tes Tammuz lamed
bais,
day of the Bris Fred Karava. Mostly,
there weren't so many
farbrengens in the year.
Officially, each year had someone who
would write down off of that year.
Uh when I finally came to the rebbe, I
was in Morristown. I was so happy
waiting to um
to come into New York. Once in four
weeks, we came in for Shabbos Mevorchim.
I was sure I'm coming in here. I'll get
the anacha.
>> [cough and clears throat]
>> Uh I'll be able to learn the farbrengen.
And when I would come in here, or they
nothing came out yet.
Uh the same thing I guess was lamed
gimmel. And those were the guys writing
the Shabbos farbrengen. The week of
farbrengen, they had someone You You
saying they weren't producing it
properly.
>> Right. Right. There was this in those
years there was a
Yeah, a weak a weakness in the hanachas.
Yes. Um
And um
the
the weekly fabrengens, I guess someone
would write it uh In those years there
were no uh cassette recorders. It was a
just a big reel-to-reel.
Uh
wasn't easy to write it down and
after you wrote it down, you couldn't
listen over cuz it would ruin again the
the reel-to-reel tape.
Uh and then someone else
not from the ones who wrote the Shabbos
fabrengens
would um
would look over the sicha.
Um fix it.
It was called making trains, like
turning around the words that they have
said here to there in order something
that was spoken with a nigun should be
able to be readable a little bit when
it's on text. And then they would type
it up. Before it used to be on stencil.
Um stencil is something that
uh you typed in it You had to type
strong enough so it made holes
in the stencil. And then that stencil
you were able to fix it behind a kind of
a little liquid that you could fix. It
wasn't so easy. That you'd put on a
machine
and print it. The ink would go through
the holes.
Um Sounds like the camping device.
That's Yeah. Wasn't What I mean to say
wasn't offset. Mhm.
Uh when I came was about as I said
Kislev
uh Tavshinal Madaled.
Uh At that time I still remember uh Alec
Friedman of Alter Eliyahu Cain Friedman,
which is a shliach in Tzfas now.
Uh was sitting together with uh Mendel
Rivkin, which was for years a shliach
the loader of in Eretz Yisrael in Lod.
And they were sitting at that time this
was Kislev
uh
trying to write the hanacha of Shabbos
Noach
from that year.
Uh
I started
typing a little bit of Reb Velvel
Shapiro would give me a sicha that it's
ready. Could you please type it?
Of course. Was I going to say the these
people that are writing the hanachas
would write write it down by hand?
The
some of them by hand and some with a
typewriter.
Those sichas, of course, were all mostly
by hand or depends if the guy who typed
from the tape
was a Israeli guy
that knew how to type
so maybe it was typed, but a lot of them
were by hand.
Um So you started typing the these
hanachas?
He would ask me, "Here's a farbrengen,
it's ready. If you type it up, it will
come out."
If I wouldn't type it, it would go to
what you call gniza and that sicha would
never come out.
Uh
And now by the end
>> [clears throat]
>> I'm sorry.
The that same year tav shin lamed daled
um
I believe Reb Berl Levin
got married tav shin lamed daled.
Sorry.
You don't have to go into all the
details, but basically till the chofs
Reb Berl write it regular hanachas and
then there was
the chofs and the early lameds there's
like this chidushim, right? It's not No,
that's that's not my my line. I wasn't
there.
Uh if you want to know more about the
history of the previous years
uh that you would have to ask someone
else who has it written down.
I came here end of lamed daled.
I uh
After all, Reb Velvel wrote the hanachas
for at least 10 years.
I believe of Gimel when he started doing
um safer Achim
he got more busy. Also Likkutei Sichos.
So, I was doing less. The story goes
that Reb Eliyahu Eichel
and old man Rabbi Simpson
uh walked over to Reb Yair like being
upset why he was the official choizer
why you not giving out writing the
maamorim. So, Reb Yair told them uh how
many years did you write for the Rebbe
Rashab? He wrote hanachos I think tav
tav reish samech vov.
You only wrote one or two years. I
already did 10 years.
You know, it's uh
people don't understand throughout the
years of the bochurim
every year or so was a different group
of bochurim that were making the
hanachos.
And even then
>> [clears throat]
>> not much
came out of course just in the beginning
after the revolution of the bochurim tav
shin chof vov I guess chof vov chof
zayin chof reish came out but then later
I guess the group of Shvacha
um
the maamorim at that time already
uh
when Reb Berel Levin I think got married
lamed alef to Reb Tzvi Yechiel
Greenblatt Tzvi Greenblatt from
Argentina
started writing the maamorim.
Uh
by at that same year Dovid Feldman used
to write
hanachos
uh taken kotzer of ever forbrengen.
I think he only made like six copies. He
said six people how big was the whole
the byuvet? Six people that took from
him
um a copy. One of them got a copy was uh
was the Rebbe.
I think Reb Berel Groner used to call it
or maybe the Rebbe the kolyor hanachos
cuz practically
sometimes was on different color paper
whatever you were able to get for cheap
paper. Paper couldn't get just uh it was
expensive.
Sometimes maybe even I don't know in the
same sicha
was a um
every page a different color of paper
at a
at
so
by the end of
by the beginning of
hey
the
meaning
the original meaning I think Shapiro
asked Feldman in addition to write a
which wouldn't take that much time was a
short run.
He
should also write
in Yiddish
with all the details a lengthy
so they could use for
there was nobody else at that time that
was making
us.
Feldman
agreed they um
They of course it wasn't going to do it
himself so they had three people of
David Feldman and
both of them were shaking at later and
now he's in Paris
and
David may show the dot.
The the block up
the ring and I think by all the dot
would write the Russia
>> [clears throat]
>> and like this they
were doing all the of course they all
the for bringing us.
Also
in Yiddish everything was written like a
for bringing would be 40 50 written
pages.
They knew the also
they were not they knew the there's all
people that know but most probably they
said by the bringing and took the but
they knew the also of course.
Feldman
knew the whole for bringing
and
David all the dot has a very good head
of course.
But he was based
on the road.
And um
The road was the same same level of but
this we're not talking about that
like this they started writing for
brings of Lamid Hey.
And Rebbe Elkan of course came and said
should work in cooperation.
Cuz he wanted to rewrite the farbrengen.
His style of writing is
much
higher than anybody. Uh
But it takes some longer.
Uh the pale that throughout the year
Lamid Hey
most of farbrengens
did not come out. They wrote the whole
year all the Shabbos farbrengens and Yom
Tov.
I believe most of them didn't come out.
What you see now that there's in Sicha
Kodesh a book
of Lamid Hey a lot of them
were
nishlam
after Lamid Vov when we started the new
Vada Noch Memim.
We every time did a farbrengen from the
year before.
So why did they write them and not put
them out?
Why didn't they come out?
Uh
Whatever people uh
for sure it wasn't the fault of the
three people that were at the office at
the time.
>> members of the colel.
Just Rebbe Elkan wanted to work on them.
Rebbe Elkan takes longer.
But there is a Vada Noch Memim which was
supposed to take care of it. It's not so
simple said.
Uh
By the end of Lamid Hey beginning of
Lamid Vov
uh
And at that time also
since we had hoped maybe the farbrengens
will come out.
So we prepared also some makemes. I
remember me and Rebbe Dovid Feldman
being
in Chever Tehillim which had a nice
library. This is before the library in
Tzach. There was a second good library
kind of that opened up. We had no
s'forim so we'd be in the library
in
Chever Tehillim
uh to make a little bit more makemes.
And now it seems after working uh
a whole year it took a lot of time from
from David Feldman.
By the beginning of 1972, he notified
the Vad and the Sat Maim that he's not
going to continue
to make any more Anoches. He doesn't
want to waste his time. He doesn't have
time. He's a brocha set and learn
Sedoris Nigla.
Uh that's it. That means that in a in a
in a certain sense, um Anoches Sat Maim
is over.
At that time also, the same period of
time, the beginning of
1972, I think was Shvat.
The Rebbe announced he's sending
Shluchim to Eretz Yisrael. I think the
first group of Shluchim in Yod Shvat the
Rebbe announced.
And one of them that was picked was
Aaron Boruch Pewzner. In other words,
that meant that that's it, there is
nobody anymore here that is going to
write Anoches.
Um
This was a Friday night, I think it was
14 14 14 18, I don't remember which
building exactly my apartment was.
It was the Friday night of Shabbos
Mishpatim, Mevorchim Chodesh Shvat
Rishon 1972, 1976.
Um
And on the same floor in the apartment
in the build in the apartment, there was
another room where my good friend
Rabbi Yisrael Yitzchak Pewzner, they
called him Itchy Pewzner.
I think he's in
Chicago, Illinois
today, a Shliach.
Um Kalman Shore was also someone a good
friend of mine still from before,
someone else was there.
And somehow
when I came at night whatever,
uh
a smooze, I don't say another word, we
started talking and they all being very
upset, what's going on? Why a sicha is
not coming out?
And when I gave him a report
uh the truth what's going on,
they
were shocked, they were very upset. On
on the spot,
a decision was made that we're starting
to give out the sichas from this
Shabbos. This is Friday night, late at
night.
From this Shabbos.
The fact we don't have who's going to
write the sichos. Dovid is not writing
anymore in Yiddish.
So, we said we'll take
Dovid Feldman's s'anoche in loshon
kodesh.
And we'll take a few guys
and they'll write
>> he was still writing loshon kodesh even
though he wasn't
>> No, of course a taken is is he
continued. Yeah, sure. Yeah, whatever
it's called a taken whatever it was.
More than a taken, but uh
And then
kacha have it right motzei Shabbos we um
we took As soon as Dovid Feldman had one
page or two pages ready, we sat down. I
think Reb Sholom Charitonow, which was a
chossid himself,
uh my good friend Reb Yankel Meishur
Walberg,
uh also I knew him from Worcester,
had a very good head. And I I think also
Reb Mendel Matzkin, even though he was
very young. He's today in Paris in
Lishka.
And uh they
started writing down noche in Yiddish.
You all know the farbrengen very well
also. But here they have a taken
already. It's much more than having a
good as some chazara.
And you write it out in the language you
write down noche.
And I um
had a typewriter there. It was the Not
only Hermes was called Hermes
Ambassador. The regular good Hermes
typewriter was Hermes 3000. The old
typewriters were Olivetti. There's a
stussin. Olivetti didn't have nice A's
and S's, but the Hermes was the one that
we used to use. And I had Hermes
Ambassador.
Uh at that time already by
tav shin lamed hey around already was
invented uh the new ribbon. It's a
one-time ribbon, unlike the old ribbons
that were
cotton that they keep finishing going
back, so the A's and S's are not sharp.
Those were uh a kind of a ribbon that
every letter you type, it uses one time
and the ribbon continues. Once it's
finished, you have to change the ribbon.
And then you're able to print from it
offset cuz it's very sharp. The original
is very sharp. And I also I typed
the sicha. I used the office that
happened to be beginning of 1972.
I went upstairs in the building and I
found a office, a big storage room.
It belonged to Rabbi Krinsky, to
Lubavitch.
It was had no door on it even and it was
all packed on the wall from the storage
with stuff that belonged to Lubavitch. I
made myself a little space and a desk
without permission.
And I sat down there to do some work. I
even gave out on my own without asking
anybody a sicha of
I think
1972. Then when we decided to start the
new sichas,
they all went up to my quote-unquote
office. They wrote, it was a little
space and I typed it.
If I'm not mistaken, by Tuesday
we finished
and I went to give it a knock head to
the person in charge of the printing of
the sichas, which was
Rabbi Yisrael Tenenbaum from the Matzah
Bakery, my good friend.
And he sent it to print.
At that time the printing was Manhattan,
right uh
uh
right where you cross the first stop
when you come to Manhattan was a offset
place.
And they came back, they were selling it
in 770 upstairs. As if it's not maybe
till now in the beam of Krias HaTorah
because he used to be the one for years
selling the sichas.
It was a a good lucker here on the
underneath the beam in the slant beam of
Krias HaTorah.
He was selling the oilum
jumped on the sicha. It was have a
history that three, four days after a
farbrengen
uh there is and I think the sicha
altogether cost like 25 cents or
whatever it was.
Um
after he finished selling, there was
some
um
exchange
of words um
uh there was no choice and uh
uh he was notified that uh
that there is no more the old vad.
There is a new vad and anoch sat mem.
The one that you guys were doing? Yes.
So what did the question was on
[clears throat] also I have a question
there was no is there any sichos from
the Rebbe about the anoch is coming out
not coming out like what the Rebbe
didn't involve in in
in that? Just I'll say it now that in
the time when we started new anoch sat
memim
uh till then So I'm saying I'm saying
I'm asking before then.
>> Yeah. So the Rebbe would complain a lot
of times of farbrengen the expression
was kind of modgeret
um it niche verschrieben the Rebbe said
it he spoke something and it's not
written down.
The Rebbe was upset.
I could say that um that from when our
sichos started
the Rebbe changed the tone the tone used
to be modgeret verschrieben
orgedruckt was I spoke it was written
printed bound in a book put on the shelf
and nobody paid attention to whatever I
said there. They should have asked a
question. Usually there was no question
on the Rebbe obviously but that's what
the Rebbe said that he what he said is
uh
there's a question that
um
but at that time so there there we go we
we told them that um there's going to be
a new anoch sat mem but who's going to
write the sichos?
Between shabbos mishpotim to next
shabbos farbrengen
uh
I was walking with uh Reb Dovid Feldman
to his apartment he was a bochur of
course. Uh I think on Crown Street and
uh
suddenly
I knew he was very very upset there was
no way to talk to him about coming back
to write the sichos.
But at that point suddenly he told me
says Hirshel since already um
this thing broke out
so I'm joining you. I I can't say over
how my heart was jumping dancing from
joy
that Baruch Hashem and takah from
Shabbos Vayakhel Vayakhel Shkalim
Shkalim
he came upstairs
and then we started working. He would
write down anochas mostly. Uh Reb Dovid
Olidort was supposed to do the Rashi for
a short time. He did the Rashi sichos.
Uh
and I together with uh
Yankel Shlimer uh
Yankel Meisha Wolberg
I mix up Yankel Meisha and Reb Goldberg.
Uh Yankel Meisha Wolberg
uh would do the maram kaimus and later
on uh
it was mostly me.
Uh the same thing uh I did the maram
kaimus
and the sichos also and the maram. We're
talking about simple maram kaimus.
Uh
when you write the maram, obviously the
sichos which the Rebbi is basing the
maram that I the person writes the maram
is supposed to know but all others
citing that I mentioned.
Now, making the maram kaimus How do you
make maram kaimus? Yeah, how does that
work?
Making the maram kaimus
um Today we know how to make maram
kaimus. Yeah, you Google it. AI
Forget about Hey, today we have eitzah
chachmah.
We have many books. In our time
there was for maram kaimus and psukim
there was a book it still exists called
concordancia.
Um how do you say it in English?
I I know concordancia. Well, I I I think
actually I don't believe even was made
by a yid.
I think it was made by a
by an Andru.
But the whole
I have one. I have one. is based on uh
It's interesting. I still keep that
book. It's an interesting books from the
olden times.
The mile of that book is that you could
found every word
based on the sheresh. As we all know the
Rebbe
usually did not repeat p'sukim the way
they are in the Chumash or Nach. The
Rebbe even said once explanation for it.
Maybe because of val peh, he doesn't
want to say.
>> and say what the Rebbe said. Did the
Rebbe say it himself? I think the Rebbe
said
that's what I heard. I don't remember
if it was in my time.
So we able to find just
for drug besides one possuk that simply
we had no clue
uh there was there was a possuk
that says le nikar shua lifnei dal.
But it's a possuk that today I'm sure
you know that possuk.
Uh but uh we didn't know that possuk and
when you hear the tape or whatever it
is, it sounded to me at least
maybe le nikar shual lifnei dog.
And therefore uh there was no way to
find it.
I remember a story I always test
bochurim. I tell them what's the first
half possuk um
vayam of meve asrim shana. I ask them
what's the first half possuk of that
possuk.
I'm not going to test you. Yeah. Anyhow,
so over there it says beshagom hu bosso.
Vayam of meve asrim shana.
On the tape
there was someone once wrote a shtikel
sicha from the tape
and not being able to understand what
the Rebbe says, he thought the Rebbe is
saying and he put a question mark be
shargon.
He put a question mark. That could
happen of course. Who knew p'sukim? The
Rebbe once said about Rebbe Chover
that the way he would know where a
possuk is is because he would spot
Gemaras in Sanhedrin.
Yeah. Anyhow, so this was p'sukim. This
was baruch Hashem we had a concordance.
When it comes to my moreh chazal
there was a three volume book called
Michlal Amore Vapiskomim that already
existed before my time. We also bought
those three s'forim.
The only problem is that in this volume
you uh
you have to know the lotion of the
hazal. It's alphabetically ordered, but
you have to know the sentence.
And since the Rebbe
usually would not say over hazal
The whole thing. The whole thing of the
sentence. So, it's quite hard. Later on
we found out was another book
ates of his government hazal I think in
downstairs in the hater shame in the
library of
hater shame library of downstairs in
770, but we did we at that time
didn't know about it. So, we had a lot
of them. Then we had
another book called ates of
his government hazal I think it was
called. Um
It was called
ates of that one was set up according
also three volumes according to topics.
So, you would go through the whole topic
this era or another era. Maybe you were
able to find it wasn't easy.
Obviously the encyclopedia you have the
past 30 years or so or more and say it
didn't exist. At least we didn't know. I
do remember that
what you call today ates of
was
shouts of by by university, but it was
something people didn't have. Only I
think you should university here had
that program. I remember that may show
winner of the had a spawn in second
would go to them to get stuff on for
them. It was a lot of money, but you
needed one word. They would print out 50
pages you had to pay cuz that word would
mans was mentioned even though not
necessarily needed everything.
And I saw my
hazal
was much harder.
Um
Just rarely when it was a very hard
hazal I would go up to the
library
upstairs in the cable in the back of
770. They had a very good library which
was donated by
the bulk area make a slavic
little niche misses father that passed
away
I think base in an accident.
And there was a lot of good swarm but
we didn't really have access there but
only from time to time there was also
not time
Everything was done under pressure of
time to finish. Also the man became
weren't done like momish everything. Now
what whatever we knew. Yeah, I'm saying
that
>> Obviously things that the rabbit didn't
say this is state or the classic
We didn't even try to learn The rabbit
sometimes helped you.
Cuz in the rabbit will say state and say
free Like a very often in the
in the when the in the rabbit says where
it is, right?
Yeah but if the rabbit would say in say
free
First of all
You have to have a say free.
Yeah to scan them
which say free say free How do you find
it there?
It's not always on the classic. Mhm. Um
Uh
concerning the here I have um
We talked we talked before about the the
so much here in the here
It's kiss love
the rabbit quoted the
the way the rabbit said it on the tape
the
rabbit the rabbit told her
According to the
we found expression the rabbit
the rabbit the rabbit told her and he He
marks to the the where where it says is
In the middle of the rabbit
Happened to be that for bringing and
after it was printed the rabbit
Looked around and made a few corrections
not my give it to me there and there.
That happened often? Uh
Sometimes not so many not so many times,
no.
Throughout all these years um
It could be I don't know a few times we
were so happy and the rabbit fixed
simply
I and I am base this really have a good
morning.
The rabbit says come out
the rabbit told her
so So, the expression was different.
That's why I couldn't find it in the
mirror.
And now, so this is how we
Now, we have to remind all other came is
Um where do we look for them? The first
of the year
and the good seekers was given out by
Munshine and the end of 11, which is the
end of a year already doing seekers. The
second volume came out Ershtein 1980
toff shimen.
Um concerning uh
So, there was no way to look. Like this,
you could find where the rabbit seekers
there is a stick of the year.
In the back of a good seekers
but it's not a good holiday. Could be
considered a good year. It's like
Now, um
when you came to see this
I think the only my friend I know is
before your time. It's also my friend
came is Yeah, they had Did you see the
same thing I did? You will write my
friend came is or you give it to someone
else?
You talking about I know it's at me me
whoever worked that time would
maybe was Gabriel Shapiro
would look up and in the middle of the
storm. The same thing again, you know.
>> [snorts]
>> Uh the the thing was also that besides
looking at my friend came is
you have to make sure that what you
write in the seeker says in the book.
The rabbit wants to remind you that he
was screaming about all of Alice. Uh we
learned from the rabbit. We never take
my friend came is
without looking inside. The rabbit
always would look inside and never take
even though he take my friend came is he
knew all of them. But, he asked to check
them out. Unless he would ask for a good
take out a book from the shelf. The
rabbit was there. The rabbit we learned
from the rabbit.
Uh obviously
we
knew most of my friend came is of the
rabbit said I was actually all of the
rabbit said we knew them already. We had
that in the Humish from so many times
saying it, but never did I, at least,
say from uh Maran Mekan without looking
uh inside. When it came to Sefiras,
there was actually um
much harder. I think there was one
Maftecha, I read big book was printed
that the Rebbe
had of there the Maftechas he gave out
of them
based on whatever Sefiras
he had in the time when he made that
Maftecha.
Uh
maybe Tofshin Yud and another few of the
Sefarim about Maftechas, Maftecha Yanim.
Of course, we would ask someone like
Rebbe Yael. It wasn't so easy
uh to bother for things like this.
Shaun Chaiton of maybe.
Um
Now, concerning asking the Rebbe
uh I'll finish one case and go back to
the technical.
Uh
Maran Mekan is, in general, of course,
you didn't ask the Rebbe Maran Mekan.
Not only Maran Mekan you didn't ask the
Rebbe.
Most, if you had a question, if you were
able to get away without asking the
Rebbe,
we, of course, did not. The people that
I don't know who did not ask. Of course,
not Maran Mekan. It doesn't come into
consideration. There were really times
that uh
either we asked the Rebbe, which means
we didn't ask where this says. We gave
in that page where that thing it says
there with a question like on the side,
asking Rebbe I want to show to the
Rebbe, and you know,
and uh important things. And sometimes
it happened after the thing was printed,
and something was saying there, and uh
Maran Mekan middle was wrong or missing,
and the Rebbe wrote on the side.
For instance,
um
there are certain Maran Mekans where we
had no choice, like it's not just a
Rebbe says a um
a Posik or something, a Posik Chazal,
and by the way, like in the brocha, what
the
famous Rebbe's instruction that if you
don't find
take it out.
This was for instance Rebbe said in the
sicha of Shabbos Matzos Maseros Kodesh
Matzos Matzain.
The Rebbe said to state before that he
spoke about because of His kindness of
Moshiach the famous Gemara.
And then then the Rebbe said, he
continued finishing the sicha before
that it says Don't let Hiskia Moshiach
Hiskia Shemaya is another name for
Moshiach is Moshiach that it says
Dvei Hiskia that Moshiach is named
Hiskia that Moshiach's name is Hiskia.
Of course in the Gemara Sanhedrin we
didn't find anything. We asked something
the Rebbe.
But that page we had to give in just
that page itself the way it was ready to
be printed and
connection beginning and
and the Rebbe added a bunch of lines.
It's all most probably these everything
is publicized. A whole thing just to
leave what he said.
Mhm. But he added that in Kisvei Arizal
with the whole uh
explanation
to bring out
that
that there is
why he said Don't let Hiskia
that it should be like this. Basically
the Rebbe said Huh? There is a makaf
there. No, it says he's using the
expression is based on the Kisvei Arizal
but he's using it doesn't say in Gemara
Sanhedrin famous Sugya. He's using the
loshon of Sanhedrin.
Uh for instance um
in the Maimer this very interesting this
already a
Mar Makim that
that they wrote in the Maimer uh Meshech
Chochma I think Shabbos Nachsei Tof Shin
Lamed Ches
so the Rebbe says
that
Shisha Sidrei Mishna
is um
they come out from
Shisha Midos the six series of Lemaylo.
as the altar Rebbe brings in the Hagoyim
Tanya.
And they simply asked the Rebbe
which Hagoy, you know.
Not everyone was working Tanya. And the
Rebbe said Huh?
>> No Hagoyis of Tanya.
>> No, I I could tell you one thing today
most people
uh
the people who worked in the Rebbe's six
of course know the Tanya upside down.
Uh and then the Rebbe
but it couldn't maybe maybe doesn't say
exactly, I don't know. I didn't look it
up. Now, the Rebbe answered Hashniya of
the safe per mem. I'm referring to the
second Hagoy in the end of per mem.
There's a lot of Hagoyis there.
Like there's a Mimer of Vayakhel
Amekhres. And then interestingly enough,
this was a weekly farbrengen as same
like that one the whole shalom Amekhres.
The Rebbe mentioned
about something. He said, "Kiyodu the
Biur Zeir in Biur Zeir." As known the
explanation in Biur Zeir means the book
Biur Zeir.
Uh writing the Hanokha, the master found
that it was easier in the Biur Zeir of
the Tzemach Tzedek. And that's what it
say from the rotten Mimer
Kimuvor Biur Zeir let Tzemach Tzedek.
And they put a footnote which page.
But the Rebbe answered, "B'khiven
leskarti
let Tzemach Tzedek kinim tzu Biur Zeir
stam be so fish nitzol the Adam Rebbe
said, "I Rebbe says, 'On purpose I did
not say that I'm referring to the Biur
Zeir of Tzemach Tzedek but this inyan
already exists in an earlier source in
Biur Zeir of the Mitteler Rebbe which
Rebbe said the Biur Zeir of Mitteler
Rebbe is called Biur Zeir stam means the
Mitteler Rebbe. And that's why he said
Biur Zeir.
And the Biur Zeir was printed by the
Mitteler Rebbe.
Here is for instance um
a very very interesting uh uh thing that
happened this Sicha also weekly from the
tape.
Um
In Sicha of Purim Tof Shin Lamed Khes
when they prepared the nocha
in the sicha the Rebbe mentioned
about uh
something uh
the way the way we printed the
the the way we prepared the nocha
we wrote machshirin mitzvah
There's a sugia in Gemara Shabbos about
bris milah machshirin mitzvah knife the
things that prepared to the mitzvah.
Uh anyhow and the Rebbe says uh vibavust
the Rashi has known what Rashi says. I
mean who is supposed to know
what Rashi says which Rashi?
And we asked the Rebbe and this
surprisingly enough the Rebbe asked
lehatik mehat tape shuras hakodesh shana
al benson please copy
and send me in
the few lines from the tape the way I
spoke which this thing is in the middle
of those few lines. I without thinking
twice I ran fast I took my
uh reshumah of the tape
that I typed. I typed over those 10
lines gave it to the Rebbe without I
guess the people had to look didn't look
and didn't realize there was any
difference. And the Rebbe circled around
that word-for-word transcript from the
tape and he write he writes
I didn't say machshirei
I said
hechsher mitzvah and it say it say in
the the the Rashi is in your vomis
vov dalet kuf mem kuf
>> hechsher.
No we by mistake wrote machshirei. We
had no clue cuz obviously we looked in
mesachet Shabbos. No I'm saying in the
in the nocha of the in the in the
transcript of the tape you wrote
hechsher? On the tape the Rebbe said but
we did we didn't pay attention. There's
a machshirei mitzvah in mesachet to say
the maratzes hechsher mitzvah is a
mistake. But the Rebbe was kind of of
must have been surprised. I got to see
what did I say?
And uh
we gave it in the Rebbe says here
around.
I said not machshirim.
>> in the in the transcript it did say
hashka. He said properly and then the
Rebbe and the Rebbe said this is the
rash where it felt the rash and vomit,
you know.
Um
A few of the interesting things
>> Who is writing all of this? Rabbi
Feldman? Um
Yes. This is those years everything is
throughout all the years besides a short
time that the rash were written by David
Olidort.
And so who's writing to the Rebbe all
these things? Uh
yes yes. In the mymorn would it would be
Tzvi Greenwald or Tzvi Greenblatt.
In the sichos would be of David Feldman.
Of course sometimes he would talk it
over with uh
with Rabbi Yair or with other people.
Uh again we only he would only ask
questions
that
you you you can't write. It's basic
things that's negate to the bill.
Uh
Talking about the Rebbe's corrections
uh there's also
very interesting
uh asach heiliker zach. The Rebbe is a
heiliker mensch besides everything. The
main thing is the Rebbe is a heiliker
yid.
And for instance here was a mymer shuva
Yisrael taf shin mem.
Uh the mymer the Rebbe was magiah was
not even given in double space was given
in single space.
Like kind of anacha protis without mym
and kaimis was written by Rabbi Elkan.
And the Rebbe mentioned you know the
posik anochi anochi yomech avshai'cho
l'mani.
Uh the Ribono shel Olam wipes off the
sins and then says it says twice anochi
and then goes l'mani. And there's
explanation in sichos
what's the anochi anochi and what's
l'mani.
Uh you know when you copy a posik all
together two words why would you take
them out for two words to write a gamer?
So the way it was written anochi anochi
anochi yomech avshai'cho l'mani. It was
twice written in that page. The rabbit
circle them around both and took them
out. The two words make up instead we
should put in a game and I wrote on the
side
The only a matter of purpose. I did not
say those two words. If I may add simple
explanation. This was Russia now.
It wasn't necessary for the beer. Also
was Russia now. Russia now you don't
mention anything of
in the diving of
of a sham things like this. I don't
know.
Um
There's a famous one also that they
wrote
Mogadishu mayor.
This is a Mogadishu. Yeah, another one
but my
pastor in the garden. Yeah, that one is
very famous.
Which again
How you supposed to write a sentence?
You can't blame people right.
What are you going to write? You have a
double
Right. What? But The whole thing is the
way it is. If they never quote you know
a few words from the other they'll write
the whole thing. Not the whole you write
minimum complete sentence something.
Yeah,
you wouldn't think it would make a make
a difference even in Mogadishu.
As as we know by the way another thing
as we know
Um
that The rabbit we learned it from the
rabbit.
When you make corrections you do not
erase the name. You circle the round and
take it out.
Also
The rabbit never erased the name of a
person.
Even with the rabbit will take out his
For other people I've seen uh
Um tough all that.
We mentioned names and there's
that all the stories all the
about Um beautiful the rabbit and the
mayor of the of the Senate.
The rabbit take out names. He wouldn't
erase them. Here is very interesting
holy one. That the mayor the rabbit
wanted to take out the words at some
you know this is not the name that
you're not supposed to erase it's not a
person's name at some
what do we know what that
is the rabbit did not erase it twice he
just took it out
circle it around and take it out to the
side
um
concerning
and there's something you say this is a
concerning mama came is
um
so the rabbits
sometimes they would say if you don't
find it
whatever something you got to
take it out if you don't find the
for instance here I have a mood of the
commander
this is the mind I think there's love
kiss love
tough show mouth came out the country of
the mama over there in the mind of
it says the rabbit says as as my father
Freddy writes
that all also woman are obligated
learning this
obviously there was a number there but
in those years there was no way in the
world to find it I think I went to
Weinberg says he remembers that there
was
in Poland whether it was in somewhere
letters to Freddy the rabbit
but there was no way for us it was much
years before the years came to start
coming out where you going to go search
for that
was left empty
and the rabbit wrote yes me
need fast
Alboni is very good at advice that I
said there is a printed letter
to
to nice Israel
in Riga the head organization we know
now today
everything is there there was
organization nice
about in Riga and Freddy and the letter
was printed in those years but
doesn't mean anything it still existed
in our time for sure not
maybe in the rabbit's library in the
rabbit's library
but the rabbit wrote beam the him too
if you don't find the Mar'eh Makom,
Yashmit to take out the whole Ha'arah,
and also the number. Don't forget to
take out the number. Don't leave a
number inside which refers to the
bottom."
And then they wrote to the Rebbe, they
found of some letter, similar letter,
something. But the Rebbe said,
"This is not what he's talking about,
cuz it doesn't mention about learning
Chassidus. It's a letter to the to the
bonus figure
about their activities, but it doesn't
say that they're obligated to learn
Chassidus." The Rebbe says, "No, take
out the Ha'arah."
I would like to um Okay, well, since
we're in Mar'eh Makom,
I wanted to go back to some technos.
We'll continue.
Uh
Here's a very interesting Klalus DeKay
instruction, a general instruction
uh by the Rebbe concerning Mar'eh Makom.
In the Sichos Motza'ei Shabbos Kisei
Sorah,
Tavshin Lamed Tes, again, it's from a
tape.
Uh the Rebbe says there, he spoke about
the famous Moshel, the Rebbe calls it
always the Moshel of the lever, the
thing that you lift, that you want to
lift a lift a building, you start from
the bottom.
Then you could lift the whole the top
floor, also.
But the Rebbe mentioned there
that Moshel of of lifting a Binyan from
the bottom, and he connected it with
Chodesh Tishrei.
But the question was
whether the source what the Rebbe is
referring to
is the famous Maimer in Te'er
in the beginning of Te'er, or in Likutei
Torah itself, in which it says
differently. Over there it says, doesn't
say lever, it says a different word in
in in jargon, something.
So the Rebbe answered there as follows.
He says, "In
when you Tzeichel, when you make Mar'eh
Makom," says the Rebbe, "there are
several categories,
and there several
Kavanos, intentions, what the Rebbe has
when he Tzeichels a Mar'eh Makom, or he
says in the Farbrengen.
One reason for Mar'eh Makom, Kipshutei
Mekaireh but past this he wanted to take
him where is the source of what you said
the past this.
The second one is
the
camera saying and I'll see in the
morning.
You want to expand and deepen the
understanding of by taking to a place
that I have says in that case not
necessarily do I take him where it says
like this I could be taking to a point
for cat. I shoot the office opposite
which from there you could take out a
detail or the cloud something
additional. I we all remember
sometimes I have to bring the best of
the bringing that the on purpose
take him to the good seekers.
I'm a lot more concerned that says the
opposite to see if people will will
catch.
And uh
there was something um
The never said
it's a very interesting thing it's
concerning about uh
uh
the kids zoom
The never said something of
citizen vote
in a certain explanation.
And uh they asked the never that the
kids zoom the Tanya in the famous letter
of the Frederick printed in the safer
kids zoom the Tanya
it says something differently wasn't
actually the only time that we asked the
never
that here you spoke like this
and here you spoke differently so the
never answered I am pouring the 70 ways
to learn Torah
and you people found in this case
two and you're surprised there is two.
I remember there's a a similar thing
that the the good review it so there's a
partial ache of I think it's the first
time the never was spoken of good review
it so it was then the never that piece
was tough to have this.
And learn how to learn how to learn how
to learn how to learn how to
um
And the never said it's a beautiful
Kabbalah then another year the never
said differently.
And we asked a question
that says over there differently. And
the Rebbe answered,
kind of if I repeat again
the same thing I said before, what's
what's the point?
>> for them is brought to you by a
Kshidisheh De Hair. We live in a chaotic
world.
>> [music]

it is it's a very fascinating about the
matter of the whole idea of matter of
this is the
Hadish.
No, like it's like not a common thing.
Maybe today it is but you know
definitely wasn't then to have this
matter of this matter of this.
Yeah, actually not only the idea of
making this is much the Rebbe's way.
Also the style how to say in this matter
of this.
Like that
you make the
chapter a comma and then the basic is
like Bubba and people like this more
modern people that made the work
properly. They are the ones who did them
started to say
technical way they did very good books.
When it comes to sources of things.
So what about um
What about others from the whatever?
Answers from the Rebbe about but like
the signal in the way that this is
written and things like that.
Um
The Rebbe wanted
that anything written it doesn't matter
what he spoke. What you what you're
writing is for people to read to
publicize. It has to be written well in
a organized way. A beginning and end.
Things should make sense.
And one of the things the Rebbe didn't
like when it it looked to him
that
um
what was written is kind of very close
to a
a word towards the transcript even
though this was written in Lashon
Kodesh, a few samples here, and one of
them a ma'amorim that the Rebbe uh was
magi'at.
But the Rebbe wrote on top
that the ma'amor is signon mavel.
Hotokas milo bemilo mamish vechulu. That
the way it was written, the the signon,
the style of writing is shocking. And in
parentheses, there is practically
copied word for word of
of the tape, I guess. Actually, that
ma'amor, because of the Rebbe being so
um
so sharp about it, uh even though the
Rebbe was magi'at thoroughly, we did not
print it. We asked that time Reb Laibel
Altein,
he was the model for sichos, to um
rewrite it. It was done, but it was
given in again, but uh
most probably the Rebbe doesn't have
time to work twice on something. So that
ma'amor was never put out with the
Rebbe's hagahos?
>> Uh
I think later on in the Torahs Menachem,
they put it in
in the sofs. Uh they added all the
Rebbe's corrections
into the ma'amor the way it's written
well.
Mhm.
Uh some other ma'amor, this is the
ma'amor in the ma'amor Tilo'echem,
Lechem Min Hashamayim from Tav Shin
Lamed Zayin,
the Rebbe
kind of commented it wasn't prepared by
Reb Yael. The Rebbe commented "Loshon
Hakodesh muzar, it's written in in in a
strange Loshon Kodesh." You're talking
about ma'amorim that the Rebbe was
magi'at. This is This is a different
topic than hanachos.
No,
No, I'm talking Reb ma'amorim that the
Rebbe was magi'at in the years of the
sichos, not in the project of the
ma'amorim which started in Tav Shin Mem
Vov. I'm talking So sometimes
>> there.
>> So sometimes the Rebbe would take a
hanacha
of the ma'amorim and decide to to magiah
on his own. The
There was two ways.
Yeah, it happened sometimes that hanacha
was given in.
And lucky enough, we didn't think to
give it in my gear. We didn't have the
chutzpah. In that case, we would have to
type it kill double space, make it
easier, make better my mom came is.
Uh but most times
we didn't do that. From time to time, it
was a special my mother of Yale would
come and decide to write up the my
mother and give it in to the Rebbe.
Sometimes Rebbe would magiah, sometimes
not.
Uh but some sometimes the Rebbe wanted
to be magiah my mother were good or not
good. He was magiah but
he wasn't so happy.
And and this my mother
uh the Rebbe added the word hanacha but
was obvious that Rebbe meant to be
magiah.
And we did give it in and the Rebbe put
the date on the passel d'Ovo.
Um In general, there's a lot of times
that the Rebbe's
expression concerning his agos
Rebbe would say that when I fix, it
doesn't mean that was after I fix, this
is good.
Like here's one expression and our
explanation on Rashi that was written up
based on the Rebbe's answers.
And the Rebbe wrote the signum, the
style of writing is musafani.
Vishma tati, I took out kamucha yes, I
only fix the most important, which means
when the Rebbe fixes, it doesn't mean
that the whole thing is
completely good. I mean, it's mugadik,
it's printed.
Um
Here's interesting of things that um
And this is referring to hanachas that
that had some agos.
>> is hanacha. Here's even in the mugadik
of my mother that were prepared and
according to the Rebbe of the Rebbe
beginning after Simchas Torah,
Rebbe Groner given over to Rebbe Elkan,
he was the maniah. The Rebbe wanted it
should give him in the my mother.
After the heart attack.
That they should give him in
uh the my mother see his and in the mind
of friends of Rome talking I saw it of
in English the Rebbe says
as this and this get a divine way brings
out the specialty of a worm
the way they wrote it in Hebrew
it's
expressed as my love
and the Rebbe said on it I mean I don't
know if you would have another way to to
write over those words in in in in in
Yiddish
in
Russian K dish but the Rebbe wrote in it
and named solution
the doctor you ever find this expression
miss body in cities
uh
something similar which
we all know in a a lot of the my mom the
beginning of the paragraph is the zero
Mhm.
and it's normal language but here was a
minor
the state should have shame came out in
top of shame him
that the Rebbe circled around in two
paragraphs over there it says the zero
gamma shy this also the the connection
now mind you shy
is Russian the cave up
but
nobody wrote in the my mom
the zoo he it's like
you know we're not used that with the
Rebbe's
say I'm not going to say
>> what was zero gamma shy not the zoo he
why would I have the zoo he usually see
this is a zero
but the Rebbe commented on the two times
the zero gamma shy in two paragraphs one
after the other he circled it and he
writes like this so you shall lay my
brain could do something with Russian
Russian
there's a whole so you can begin with
doing about the difference something
that is written in Russian of
so Russian the cave up
and
to those people they couldn't care about
it
I'm sure that time they they fixed it
the zoo he was very unusual to write
in a Mimer of the Zui.
And listen,
I was going to say that you do see it. I
guess it was afterwards, after the
story.
>> Mr. Mimer, it could be for also, but
usually
What happened? Do you remember what the
Biel changed Misbater?
I don't remember.
It could be checked right away.
In the Mimer, but [clears throat] I
I didn't check at this moment.
And one of the
Sichos, now concerning the way to write
a
translation.
And this is very important for today's
day.
Well,
people are giving out, supposedly, a
Hanacha.
A transcript from tape is something
else. When you make a Hanacha
in Hebrew, and you write word for word,
here's what the Rebbe wrote.
And one of the Sichos of the of our
earlier years, I'm talking about Lamed
Vov, those years.
I said
several times that the Kavana,
the intention of Hatocha, of copying
something, is Sheyavinu Techan
Hameduber, the people should understand
the contents of what was spoken. Velay
Diyuk Bahtoch Behetech There's no point
in being exact, copying word for word.
Which once you do that, the Mamer ain't
the Klaus Sichos It creates not a normal
Sicha that could be read.
It's rather a Reshima Hatocha Stavis.
It's a list, a Reshima where you copied
words. It's not [clears throat] a Sicha
anymore. It's not readable.
The Muchrach the Rebbe says there's a
must that you should translate Chofshis,
free translation, what's called.
Validay Zaid, this has to be done by
someone who knows the language
and the Dikduk to write it properly, and
someone who knows the language of
Michtavei Torah, writing things of
tailor, not of newspapers.
What's the lotion?
Yes.
What's the lotion?
The lotion of
the camera camera poem cover talker
should you be new.
Take it on the double the lady you got
the hectic middle of the middle should
be mellow in the class seeker the clear
came regime at talker status or more
should you take off shoes while you days
there should you deal a hack with the
Google of the signal make to the tailor
the lady make to the meeting.
I want to go back a little bit
um
to um
to the technical
uh
part.
Uh
in all those years from when we started
uh and all those that mean from 12
till the
end of them
till the end of them
A good friend of mine are you vice
would be the typist. Those were
typewriters of course till the end of
them 1987 there were no
computers at least that time started
them as those were a different kind but
I'm talking about the regular. So it was
a typewriter
he would sit
uh and all those were done in the day he
would sit the whole night or whatever it
is 12 hours non-stop not practically not
getting up from his chair. He was a good
typist.
Um
and then
um
later on
the size of the all the years was 8 and
1/2 by 11.
And you would staple it in the corner.
Um
one time sometimes the end of tough shin
lamed zayin the shmad
matzoh matzoh sometimes that time
Um
Reb Avraham Shem Tov had come back from
Poland. He was sent by the Rebbe to get
out the Friediker Rebbe's library.
When he came back, he um
he
the library arrived later. The Rebbe
went to before the Rebbe came out of 770
Kislev he went to South anybody's seeing
just a few people to the library to
check it.
Um the Rebbe Reb Avraham Shem Tov met
the Rebbe I guess by the room. The Rebbe
gave him a matana the hanacha the maimer
of Shabbos matzoh matzoh
with the sicha and the maimer the Rebbe
brought with kedish
Boruch Hashem Shabbos kedish chazon
tough shin lamed zayin and signed his
name.
And the Rebbe told him
was looking at Shabbos Erev Shabbos
when we heard that the sicha which we
didn't consider our nochos to be
anything
kind of embarrassed.
It was done for the people.
When we heard that the hanacha is so
chashuv that the Rebbe gives it and
signs his name on it
we decided we're going to change the
size make it a more
normal acceptable size not a page like
this 8 and 1/2 by 11 but a pamphlet.
And the Rebbe was asked like to give it
out the Rebbe exactly Rebbe what size do
you want to make it like the regular
size of of the which is a little bit
bigger than 8 and 1/2 by 11 folded
something like this taking 8 and 1/2 by
11 folded. Um
the Rebbe did not agree but something
the Rebbe wrote something like
uh
It seemed the Rebbe agreed to part of it
but not fully.
We already had asked the Rebbe so then
we decided to um
to ask the Rebbe and we wrote everything
the sizes everything was written to the
Rebbe how it's going to look and we
started making it from then which is
from Shabbos
to be off cuz we found out that
information a little bit later, the
forbringers started coming out in the
size was called a 6 by 9 actually.
>> [clears throat]
>> Uh, 6 and 1/2 by 9 and 1/2 this so if
you have not 6 kids you have the
original ones that were bound in
10 days.
Ma'am, from the third volume of of of 10
days a different size you were
publishing also then. That's what's
interesting now, but it's all by the end
of the year. Practically. People that
bought by us done here.
Every time came out came up to us. The
brothers the single seekers. And if you
were missing something if we still had
it we put in.
And we took all the seekers put them
together practically you would have the
seeker the workers name written on top
of each seeker.
And
we gave it to those cats book binding
the famous book binding in Williamsburg.
They did the cedar they would do
everything you needed something nice
with a hard cover binding was very
expensive was each book was done by
hand.
And we bound it for the book of the same
thing 10
days 10 days.
After that never was there a
complete year.
10 days also missing a little bit.
Uh.
But the came this was still done inside
the seeker in in parentheses.
Which disturbs the reading which as
everyone knows. Also when you write the
inside you can't write. A lengthy or two
days you have to make it as short as
possible. It doesn't let you.
>> that done cuz the typewriter you can't
do it in the bottom?
No, first of all it wasn't easy to look
when you look today they're giving out
now all the seekers from the early years
the the Amelia.
They in
base.
After even the was magid they typed
everything put in the
inside till later start doing on the
bottom.
How do you make on a typewriter a guess
on the bottom?
Um, it's not easy. You have to calculate
how much text to type on top, which
means you first type up the bottom came
is separately.
And you keep on typing the inside and
keep on putting on the bottom your page.
Measuring, do I still have time to add
another line inside so it should fit on
the bottom.
The bottom came is for inside at that
time happened to be after the for
bringing of Kadala Davis of Shalam at
which the Rebbi spoke that time
about uh
about Premier Prime Minister Begin.
And uh
the for bringing came out of that meme.
A while little bit later the Rebbi was
my gear the whole for bringing.
And
we should give it out in a Madura Basta.
I don't think maybe it was given out
with us nothing print. So we redid
retyped the whole for bringing.
Took out the words and
set meme built in the back of the cover.
We added big words Madura Basta.
And
I if I'm not mistaken the Rebbi not see
her
marked off that we should put down the
bottom came is
you put numbers we should put them on
the bottom. It was another seeker like
this.
I don't understand it. So why was the
Madura Basta? No, the Rebbi after it was
printed the Rebbi
meme built in the back of the Rebbi was
my gear the whole for bringing. That's
Madura Basta, okay. So but we didn't
give it in typesetting. I'm sorry to
explain. We didn't do it typesetting
like regular like could see her to count
whatever. We just retyped it on a
typewriter the whole for bringing. Why
didn't he do like could see her? Maybe
we I don't remember now if it was there
off from the Rebbi or
that it wasn't
whatever not always
were things clear or sometimes for
instance
there were times the Rebbe was Magia a
few ago
and the Mimer the Rebbe going to say no,
this is not to be printed. He called it
the Rebbe's Magia provisory, means just
to enable move, not fully, just
Sometimes we did we used the the famous
saying
when a person gives you a finger, you
grab the whole hand. If the Rebbe made a
few corrections, we took the guts and
typeset and gave it in. If we're lucky,
the Rebbe
put his stamp on it and here you have a
Maggid Shiur the Mimer.
That one we retyped it and we put the
hours on the bottom,
but we used for each one a separate
line.
Shortly thereafter,
we decided that we got to start doing
the all the Hanachas
with the Mamakim on the bottom, but of
course we made the Mamakim
typed consecutively like one with the
Mamakim and then two. And the same
thing, we type up a whole page or two
with all the Mamakims and our revise,
we keep on typing the Sichan measure to
see
how much do I have to leave to be able
later to to type up on the bottom what I
typed already there, it should fit in.
Um
and but that was also a issue. Unlike
the the
the what's give coming out now, the
first answer to see taking lots of down
taking down lots of what it means to see
those green
pamphlets, how did you make a number for
a footnote? You have to type a number,
leave the tiny bit the roll of the
typewriter so that how much rule would
higher, but the numbers are very big.
We couldn't have this, so
we went and
to a printer to whatever was Empire
Press or the who smile in your Mr.
Goldberg and they typed us up a sheet
of numbers from 1 to 200 or to 300. We
took that sheet and made very sharp good
photocopies of it
and then we would
um
we had a machine called a waxer. We'd
put in wax, it was plugged in, it would
melt the wax. That's how the old
discourses were done. How do you paste
the columns on the bottom of the orders?
It didn't come like this from the
computer till who knows when.
So, we would the same before print it
would be stuck on.
>> Yeah, you Yeah, sure. You figure out you
The guy would have the whole roll of the
sicha on his shoulder. Take a look, how
much fits inside, how much the other one
came is, where do I stop? And like this
kept on pasting it on.
So, we did the same, and we would have
to cut the numbers tiny, each number
took up very little place, exactly no
space, there's a special knife for that,
and carefully take that number with our
finger with a nail and put it on there
and press it down hard, it shouldn't
fall off. And by typing we didn't leave
a whole space empty, we would leave You
go to type with a halfway back
to um
to uh leave enough space. If it's one
number, two numbers, and like this the
whole sicha. And of course, if you
sometimes later after it was printed or
even before, if you weren't careful, the
number would fall off.
And we'd end up having a sicha It It
actually happened once. This was a a
interesting story
that um
One second. The Nobody
The hanacha started having them on the
bottom?
>> Yes, from that fabrengen on, right after
the happened the story the Rebbe's
magiach of the Alter Rebbe's lamid ches,
so we started making small pamphlets in
as I said in tav shin That's why it's
printed
It's like a skaydis it's printed like
that? Yeah, the big pages they enlarged
it, but of course it's like this.
Maybe some But they already printed from
a printed one, numbers couldn't fall
off. The original was it was a problem.
>> happened? So, the number fell off? Uh
No, it happened one This Okay, happens
happens. It happened once a sicha that
the Rebbe suddenly chof cheshvan tav
shin mem the Rebbe asked that he wants
to be magiach the fabrengen.
The fabrengen yet wasn't written up.
It was written up the whole hanacha
written up by Reb Dovid Feldman, typed,
but by the typist he was only up to like
the first 10-15 pages and as it is they
didn't want to wait. We gave him in the
part that was already a photocopy of the
part that was already typed up nice and
the rest was a double-spaced the way it
is
typed with the came inside and the Reb
actually got the whole thing but we
didn't realize I mean
we wouldn't even think it was not so we
should give him right away.
That the 10-15 pages that were given to
the Reb the typed ones
it was the wasn't finished so there were
no numbers there there were footnotes on
the bottom with numbers and the Reb
wrote there laying this one with me more
comments to you and it's missing inside
the secret where the where belongs the
number. We didn't realize that all even
if we would we couldn't hold it back to
do it
Um because you do my comments at the
end.
No but but before he starts typing
>> are put in later.
>> Yeah the last thing where you finish the
whole secret you start pasting in. Yeah.
Uh at the time there was That's how I do
it today too. What? Today too you wait
to the last version till you uh Yeah
no you could make before then you take
gets updated automatically everything.
>> complicated. Okay whatever yeah.
It depends if if you work with Word
everything is automatic the one reason I
still work with Word even though nobody
does this cuz it updates the numbers it
shouldn't be a mistake.
In the other program tag I don't know
what it is today tag
um when you make a double number
in Word it has cross-reference.
Mhm. You catch the same number. In their
program sometimes you see there's a
double number which is the wrong one cuz
later numbers were were added and all
the numbers got advanced but this number
stayed uh
the wrong one. Okay we'll uh
we'll go back um
and now more of the secret is
even before the Contreras of the winter
what called Contreras the safer came out
called here of option
even before that
the Rebbe would from time to time make a
sicha. When the Rebbe is making a sicha
the Rebbe adds mama came as a gillion or
on the on the pages with mama came as
well by the end. And the way you add it
is with a star or with two stars or with
three stars. Then later you have to
straighten it out. Actually when you
look at the sichas the time before
computers
there are mama came as with stars cuz
the Rebbe added and there was no way to
retype set the whole sicha
cuz the numbers changed.
It would cost too much money.
But since you could always see in a
sicha when there's a star you could
figure that the one with the star is not
the horror that the Rebbe added but
another one. They didn't want people to
know which horror the Rebbe added. They
would change around a lot of a few
numbers. So but you could recognize
always which one is the Rebbe's, which
one is not.
>> So the star
But the Rebbe didn't like the stars.
Isn't a star like a horror on the
horror? That's a shula a gillion. On the
horror a shula gillion there there's no
choice. Mostly it's one star, two stars,
three stars. But at least the numbers
inside on all the horrors should be the
Rebbe insisted we should straighten out,
take out the kaholvim. The Rebbe didn't
like it. Yes.
Um This sicha is full of stars.
In what? Cuz this sicha is full of
stars. In those years
there was no way to do it. It was it was
before computers.
Mhm. Um
I'm talking about before
even
when Word came out, when Word came out I
think tofshendalt even when MS-DOS came
out, but still the way the sichas were
done MS-DOS was looked like a
typewriter. It spread it out. It wasn't
typeset. It was still done by a machine
called AM Varityper.
The machine costed $100,000.
Uh hm.
You say it's impossible
It would be too much work. Right, to
redo the whole to redo everything.
That's But if there would be a lot of
Kechovim, I guess they would redo.
Um
So,
for instance,
and the Rebbe also
And as all the years, the Rebbe knew
there's nobody responsible kind. He has
to take care of all the technical
things.
Not
I mean, the Rebbe could have known
already the most probably, but he didn't
rely on it. So, for instance, my Ma'amar
Chaggah Osif Mem Gimel, which came out
Muggedik Eish Tof Shin Mem Zayin, the
Rebbe wrote on top, "Levatlah Kechovim."
Take out the stars.
Ulahachnisam Beseder. Put them in in
proper order.
As hard as
One, two, three should be one with a
star. Also, after the Rebbe's Maggid the
first time,
Reb Yisrael would add more things that's
uh based on what the Rebbe fixed. He
would have to ask at this or at that or
and so on. So, it was tons of stars.
Like
>> Asterisk.
What?
>> It's called an asterisk. Asterisk, yeah.
Gave it to me. Yeah, yeah, you said it.
Good machine.
I'm sorry I didn't go to all the Torahs.
I don't speak English. I never
>> [laughter]
>> Um
And again in that same Ma'amar
which came out for Sukkos Tof Shin Mem
Zayin, the Kuntres Sukkos Mem Zayin,
in the Pesach Dover again,
the Rebbe wrote not the stuff in the
paper attached, again,
"Levatlah Kechovim."
Again, remind us, remember take out the
Kechovim and make the numbers one after
the other.
There was a uh uh uh
issue with the Maram Kaimis
that especially
>> when
So when the Rebbe's my gear sichos was
all done through Vad Hanacha basically.
Uh yeah, but
>> The Rebbe has a say to the sichos that's
separate and then the Hanacha's the the
farbrengens
>> farbrengens
>> Yes.
>> doing it through
>> It happened really here and there
that
they were busy with the sichos that
happened on Rosh Hashanah sichos of
Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin uh the famous
sicha about the Tamchut Mim uh 80 years
Chayol Tof Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin
whatever it is how many years that of
Tamchut Mim The Rebbe spoke a
Maram Kaimis sicha in the summer uh
Rosh Hashanah
>> Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin was 80 years.
80 years The Rebbe spoke a sicha I
think. Gadia whatever the famous
and that time Rubashkin prepared it so
they prepared it.
>> So once in a while the
Vad Hanacha did it.
>> If if they would prepare
it really happened they
they were busy enough.
Um
So the Rebbe would ask to now the Maram
Kaimis especially when it was Maram
Kaimis that Rebbe's my gear so the Maram
Kaimis were very small just every number
was like a possuk a small Maram Kaimis.
And
especially when the Maram Kaimis is is a
full column it's not two columns of
sichos it looks on the bottom it's all
empty.
And the Rebbe didn't like it he wanted
the Maram Kaimis should go
b'zeh u'va'zeh one after the other. For
instance um
sicha yud seegel l'amitas was a a
yechidus to talmidim from Bais Sefer
l'havdalah going back to Eretz Yisrael.
Not only did the Rebbe say the Rebbe
went to himself it was the typed one
before the typesetting. He went with a
pen attached every end of the previous
hora'ah to the next one. Every hora'ah
like the 20 hora'ahs or so that were
there he attached them.
Uh for instance even in the later nisan
tough shmim, erev shishi of pesach,
so in this gimel nisan tough shmim, the
rebbe wrote
and the hardest zeh achal zeh, one after
the other, consecutively,
one next to the other. V'lay b'shuros
v'natzum. And then again, shortly
thereafter, since the rebbe thought
might not do it, the rebbe wrote not in
separate lines, if
you're making it in a format cotton,
which means either you're going to print
uh, children's sikhs come out a little
booklet, which is also wide.
Uh, then they had asked the rebbe that
what they're giving in
is actually they're making it the
regular wide format, like a regular
sikhs and all could sikhs. A full
width of um,
26 spikers,
if you know what that is.
And therefore, they asked the rebbe,
could they leave the mamre kames
like this?
And the rebbe says, no, since you're not
doing in two columns, but two columns
doesn't look empty.
Actually, I think tough shin nun dalet
already existed
uh, a program for Word, little bit
later, that was called um,
hamesif, for Word was a guy in
Williamsburg. He would sell for them, he
sells, he sells also deits achachma, a
lot of these programs for years. Existed
a program, but uh, we at least didn't
even have all the years that program.
So, the rebbe wrote that since it's in
one,
not in two columns, so you should still
do the mamre kames was zeh achal zeh.
Now, we're going to go to the so-called
keta of the sikh, the part of the sikh
the rebbe spoke about shlemus ha'aretz
or other topics, not um,
directly rashi biurim sikhs and the
world the world the world leader topics.
>> It started siani of tough shin lamed
ches.
Uh,
the first time the rebbe spoke about
that the Rebbe spoke about speaking
about Eretz Yisrael
was Motzei Shabbos Lech Lecha. I think
even a Shabbos before the Rebbe started
speaking about building mikvahs, but it
wasn't so
And you spoke before that the Rebbe
never spoke about general things.
>> Yeah, but it was. It was, but not so
Look, in in the years of Beis Hamikdash,
every farbrengen the Rebbe spoke about
Me Yudi.
But those things, first of the
farbrengens, mostly didn't come out.
And
mind you
I don't even think Rebbe Yoel Kamby
Chazara ever chazared those sichos.
Uh he didn't. He didn't, and
people that said that when Rebbe Yoel
didn't chazer, nobody else is going to
chazer in front of Rebbe Yoel that day.
That's that's obvious. Um
When Rebbe Yoel says sometimes he stops,
he would ask
whether it was Yossi Erlich or whatever
I'm talking about, even the later years.
Uh Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, Yoel
Feldman.
Usually Rebbe Yoel would say, "If you
didn't chazer
um
nobody was going to say, 'Okay, now this
sicha I'm going to say.' This didn't
exist. He was the chazer.
They wouldn't have
the chutzpah to do it either.
And also it started The Rebbe started
speaking about the matzav in Eretz
Yisrael.
And that part, of course, would go in in
the hanacha. By doing in in all the time
later, this part could have been a half
hour. Two or three times later on that
the part about Shleimus Ha'aretz
was
45 minutes, over an hour.
And even in in the time when it was 45
minutes, sometimes it could have been
that in quantity, in amount of pages,
the sicha about Shleimus Ha'aretz would
amount to half of the amount of a whole
farbrengen. But this was part of the
farbrengen.
We did it.
Sometimes before Purim Lamitzei Khes
uh
Rebbe Chodakov approached uh
one of us and gave us over that the
Rebbe said, I mean obviously the name of
the Rebbe that what the Rebbe speaks
about Eretz Yisrael, it was a
does not belong in the Hanukkah.
To us this was the end of the world.
It's like was a Yuma, a decree
uh that we're not going to put in big
part of the farbrengen.
So we asked him, I mean, how are the
people in the world going to know what
the Rebbe spoke?
So he says, those that need to know will
know.
I I guess he was referring to someone
once Shabbos calling first the way
recordings that he referred to someone
uh calling after Shabbos and giving over
to
to Berel Levov, which was the spokesman.
And now we we somehow
uh
kind of begged for life. We and we
suggested that we're not going to put it
in in that part of farbrengen, but
separately as a ketter. Actually this is
called It's called in every farbrengen
you go over the back starting from 2006
you have the whole farbrengen after that
ketter and sichos. It starts from where
the politics I'm starting to call it
politics from where the sicha of some
sort of Eretz Yisrael.
And it actually with the avid it helped
because um
like this you could finish the
farbrengen much faster. You could leave
the ketter for a month later, you know,
when you have time. It start didn't stop
giving out the farbrengen.
Interesting enough that already of
dollar tables 2006 I'm sorry sorry about
tables the first time the Rebbe spoke
divrei kodesh
and uh at that time already the Rebbe
was magiah the part about Eretz Yisrael.
The Rebbe but the Rebbe says not to put
it in. Yeah.
But we most probably thought
that because it's the sicha's coming out
Muga, the Rebbe doesn't want the Muga to
the sicha. That should be it should be
we I think we typed it up separately as
without the word Hanukkah built to Muga.
The Rebbe spoke about Eretz Yisrael
divrei kodesh a bunch of times.
Every time in in the memos it
like
There was sometimes by the by the 10
days the rabbit avoid like cuz I had a
good talk with the stuff but every time
you know it's it was rubbish.
It was always like that. It was always
separate.
Yeah.
From then on it started being separate
in Hanukkah Satmar. Uh when when the
rabbit would add sometimes in Soviet
Kaddish
uh appears like they ask the question
and then they understand and the rabbit
would answer kind
The reason also is because I I didn't
say everything and the rabbit would add
a whole piece.
And sometimes the rabbit would give the
instruction that this piece you should
put it in put it out in Yiddish.
Write up as normal part because it's
it's a major part of the bill.
But on the other hand it happened for
instance in what's the Shabbos I saw the
matter.
Which was a weekday for bringing.
And
uh a paragraph was prepared important
paragraph to the understanding of the
secret prepared based on the rabbit's
answers in Soviet.
And that time the rabbit wrote how are
you actually it's the camera camera
tape.
Exclamation mark several people have a
tape. How could you add this piece of
secret here?
Uh there's a tape and therefore the
rabbit says call an owl all above.
You should add in a whole
written of course in Russian Kaddish
hours.
And the kids cuz it's not a horror. I
have a question. Yes. All these answers
you have them or other people had them?
I
everything written here I have
photocopies.
So you kept everything from then
basically.
What do you mean if The people in
Hanukkah's got the rabbit's secret other
copies from the maskers. No,
they got to always like Soviet Kaddish.
Here and there maybe something tiny.
Um
Never even got to us that the Rebbe
was Magia. So someone has all these
uh answers to the
>> Yes. Yes, I'm sure.
When you Yeah, I have mostly I have
copies most not everything.
I mean uh
Mind you there were no copy machines. I
don't have to tell you that.
Uh maybe there is. Forget about
mosquitoes.
We
when we used to print the sichos
ourselves
there was a plate maker. It wasn't metal
plates with negatives.
It was a machine like copy machine that
had a roll of thermal paper it's called.
But that was not the regular copies with
thermal paper. It's a kind of copies
that you
you open it up after a few years it's
gone all what what was written on it.
That's one issue. But for the printing
this was a plate a heavier roll that you
would make a picture of the page and
that you would put on another machine.
But since that wasn't metal it was only
able to print a few hundred before it
disintegrates it falls apart.
Uh but that's
too much of the technical things.
Um
Uh
Concerning the Pesach Davars of the
Mugadish Sichos
used to be a style we copied what was in
the olden years.
We'd type up whatever and the regular
lotion used to be that um
would be that would be the paragraph was
saying that it seemed like we hereby
give out this in the sicha the Rebbe
said this and this farbrengen. Next
paragraph would say that um that the
Kodesh shlita the Rebbe added how is it
came as how by mishloach which come on
the on the bottom.
Uh the bottom.
Um
in Marshall Tushin Lamid Ches
Basukis Tayshu, which is the My Rebbi
David that we all know that Rebbi David
chill hit Tishrei. Usually the My Sukis
Rebbi David
Rebbi Sukis that time actually Tishrei
after that was never
the curtains
and Simchas Torah
the heart attack.
Um but in that sicha
The Rebbi The Rebbi give all the dates
for all the Pesach Davars. You tried to
get the date
which here is in order to give the date
you gave him the Pesach Davar
when you gave him the gallus for the
second time.
But at a later stage
uh when it was only one ago you had to
remember
always to give in the Pesach Davar when
you're giving in the first time.
And therefore uh
much later sichas not from
uh not from
my time and also not from Lahak
uh
from Anach Sat Maim from the later years
uh some of them I could imagine that uh
I'm just guessing that the date is not
even the Rebbe's.
Cuz uh they never managed to give in
the in the the He Magazine
we we have the date in the Pesach Davar
in the editorial.
So we we always use uh a date that the
Rebbe gave. Oh, yeah.
>> I'm sure it sends me a date every month
for when we got to print.
That's how That's how we do it. It's
very nice. It should be so heilig
sh'beheilig. I'm happy to hear that. And
I must be the Rebbe took out that time
the whole paragraph, took it out.
Uh even though the Rebbe did put Horas
Mam Kaimus whatever reason he didn't
want to write them from then they
stopped. But we stopped it on the
Kuntreisim but when suddenly the Rebbe
was Magia Maimer Mishpatim Lamid Ches
unusual
so this already not what they send in
the Kuntreisim.
So we
and that thing stayed again.
Back then for instance by Purim cotton
we realized that we took it out but then
later
here and there because not always the
the pressure of work
was that sometimes we didn't remember
what happened.
When the work so pressured that when
you're doing next thing you forgot what
happened yesterday because you can't see
working
This
is the way it was.
Um
At the time later I saw a passover
already much later. Mug and
shimon Zion
that the Rebbe corrected that
paragraph. It said again the Rebbe was
making the sicker
and
the Rebbe fixed this as follows. He said
okay let's take out his name and he
wrote letter Alice
the limit for the benefit of the reader
and learner.
The moment came is
come on the bottom. See nothing to do
to him.
Um several things about the
the my morning I'm talking about before
the project of the my morning.
For instance the my morning bus and Zion
um
was prepared
according to the Rebbe's instruction the
Rebbe said the my morning of Shabbos
and and the my morning of Shabbos and
the Rebbe gave instruction that the my
morning inside should be the one that
was said more
Everyone was able to see and hear to
hear.
And the Shabbos the one that things he
said Shabbos should be put on the
bottom.
And
sweet green will prepare it like this
wasn't easy we had to type up name
bottom and then the my morning came is
on the bottom calculate everything where
this number goes for here like we have
my morning my morning came is going to
work for the plane for the my morning
bus
keep track.
And we didn't think the Rebbe was going
to be Magid that moment. It was typed up
regular in the small format, which was
uh the Maimuna always like a
it's called a legal, which is 8 1/2 by
14 bent in half with a small size of the
books of the Maimuna.
And uh
we were going to print it. It was going
to be printed next day.
I'm sorry to say on my own, I had enough
um chutzpah.
I ran the copy machine as I told you. I
ran upstairs in the Kalil in the back
70.
I made a copy of those little pages.
And without asking anybody's permission,
I gave it to Rabbi Groner to give it to
the Rebbe. Some kind of we're going to
print it.
And lucky enough, next morning
the Maimuna came out and it was Magid so
was Acha. To another Magid come out and
not only that, the Rebbe gave out that
Maimuna to the Shluchim. They were going
Chassidic Shabbat. The Shluchim uh Lamed
Zayin to Tsas. This was the second group
of Shluchim, I think. It was Lamed Vav,
Lamed Zayin from Kotel, Lamed Ches.
I don't remember.
Um
Um Motsae Simchas Motsae Simchas Torah
Lamed Ches, where the Rebbe all these
weeks the Rebbe spoke from the room. So
Motsae Simchas Torah there was a very
obvious Maimuna in the Ovenin in Simchas
Torah.
Motsae Shabbos Bereishis, there was no
specific part of the Sicha
that the way it looks to
um my eyes that was a Maimuna.
But Rabbi Groner gave over a name of the
Rebbe that
he should the Rebbe should make a
Maimuna.
And the Maimuna
is supposed to be based
on the Torah of the Tzemach Tzedek.
Um
Parshas Bechukosai Lachem.
And that's the Rebbe did. The Rebbe was
Magid.
In those years is of the Maimuna were
Kuntres.
I the Rebbi spoke just one thing, one
long thing. There was no
My Sicha it's a different whole story.
I'm going to Sicha was uh
What's interesting that when the Rebbi
started farbrenging
finally
um
downstairs
he started again saying my ma'am lamid
ches. I think with lamid ches lamid tes.
Even though before that there used to be
my Sicha
cuz the Rebbi
was proving that he's healthy.
Um
even the good Sichas they they weren't
going to give in.
For Breishis lamid ches with the Rebbi
said they should give in. They thought
that's it. It's going to be another
break now after 2 years like times
before every 2 years was was a break.
Interesting thing.
>> That's your That's your uh
My gifeel? Yeah, I guess. Yeah. Uh ev-
everyone know that
that's it. Sichas are No, I'm saying
about the ma'am.
Why did the Rebbi switch? It's It's very
interesting cuz later on the Rebbi went
back to ma'am and Sicha.
I don't know this is halacha zachum for
for people to say hergashum it's not my
line.
Interesting what's lamid ches with the
Rebbi spoke about shalom soros.
At that night early in the morning from
a skias they called Berke Wolf in that
so he was the the spokesman to the
newspapers.
And
he was asked by the Rebbi's instruction
to wait till he publishes sizes what the
Rebbi says cuz the Rebbi is going to
add another
part the Rebbi wrote a whole bunch of
tzetl ksav kodesh.
But most probably
Reb Yisrael never got a hold of it. It's
not only thing that for some reason they
didn't think they have to give it over
to him.
And it's not included otherwise it would
have been included in the mug of the
Sicha too.
Maybe they found it much later.
It it printed in the
in the magazine. One of the integral
components of being a Hasid are the
Hasidic Yom Tovim and Yemei d'Pagra.

So,
after that, we know the Rebbe's Magid,
what's in the Hasidic Bereishit, Noach,
Lech Lecha, Chayei Sarah,
after that came the Ma'amar Vayeitzei
Vayishlach Beshalach, the long Ma'amar,
uh, one of the longest Ma'amarim.
The Rebbe said it like a sicha, so it
could be a little longer Ma'amarim
in speaking. I don't think so. And but
till the maamar is ready by Reb Yael,
was already kind of M'Katz.
The Reb was already in a different In my
opinion, the Reb was starting with
publishing Tanya's. That's That's when
the Mugadish Sichos stopped.
But then here and there was a lot of
Sichos. Uh
The whole period of time Reb Yael made
the kuntresim.
Uh that Reb Yael went back to learn.
Uh
he would be here and there to help out.
I would sit and type for Reb Yael.
So on and so forth. And then later,
after the whole thing stopped, he came
back and then started again. Built the
Mugadish time. Time the Reb was making a
new Siyum Ha'Tanya, of course.
I think the Reb wanted to tell the Reb
that he said we should give it in. That
was first the night was night from the
room was a maamar and a sicha together.
Reb Yael made it and it was not a sicha,
but Reb Yael was planning to make a
teichen.
He didn't think the Reb wanted to make
the whole sicha.
And suddenly the Reb started with
M'Katz. So I think you could see it
online here. The Reb said, "Chassidish.
Chassidish." The Reb said, "Time to
He just spoke yesterday. It is missing
till Reb Yael or Reb Yael in
Now in Central Monsey all thing.
And it was a sicha was already built.
Has a structure. You have to start
adding seifim, seifim, everything. And
then uh
>> [clears throat]
>> But then in that sicha, actually, as I
said before, the Reb took out the part
of Shleimus Ha'Aretz.
Uh
A very interesting uh thing which we
always know.
It's not I have a one dougma, but it's
something the Reb said by the
farbrengen. It's Shchinah Medaberes
Mi'Toch Grino. Once he said it,
it's holy. The Reb said it was by the
farbrengen in Hungary.
Came to the thing as Torah of one of the
Siyumim with the with the Reb.
With one of the Rebbeim.
But you could see here, for instance,
in the Reb had written in a sicha he put
a ho'oro in Purim Katan L'Metzora.
That uh it says, "V'en find any va'amcha
mikol
ha'am." That's where the Reb said in the
sicha.
And
and the posuk says ha'adam.
And then in maimer in ches
the Rebbe made a ha'ara'a that in the
maimer in ches
it says uh
it says ha'am.
And maybe it should say ha'adam or
something. And then
it's already printed. And then what the
Rebbe had settled that rabim he'iru them
some were embarrassed that uh that it
has to be ha'adam.
So the Rebbe wrote a gantze ha'ara'a
to explain
going around and around
why be'emes the pshat of the posuk is
the way he wrote and so on and so forth.
Feistuch once the Rebbe said wrote
um
Talking about the Rebbe being magi'ah,
there were times the Rebbe asked to give
in a maimer. Many times that many that
the Rebbe asked a cheileke zach.
It's completely holy. The Rebbe asked to
give in a maimer. We got the instruction
with the Rebbe Chodakov all.
And we gave in and the Rebbe was not
magi'ah.
It's a cheileke zach. We'll never
understand what. For instance,
taf shin lamed ches Rebbe Chodakov gave
a sover that the Rebbe wants to be
magi'ah the three maimerim. I think it
was three maimerim a yom tov of Purim
and chalta machalta se'udata of motzei
Shabbos tzav.
And they wrote because of parsha pora of
shmini.
And
it wasn't Rebbe Yael Zweig Rebbe Lot. We
I think it was Zweig Rebbe Lot. We gave
in those maimerim.
And they didn't come out.
After a while we didn't print it. We're
waiting maybe the Rebbe will be magi'ah.
After a while I walked over obviously I
did the dirty work. I walked over to
Rebbe Chodakov.
And I asked him Uh, so he says I should
write it down on the paper.
My request, what I want. So, um
So, we typed up a paper that according
to the law we received from the Rebbe, I
guess.
The Rebbe said, um
we should give it to my mother, and uh
we asked him what to do now. You have to
be very careful you write to the Rebbe.
We asked the Rebbe, "What should we do
now?"
The Rebbe's answer was uh something like
this, "After all the years
to learn
everything
did you already ask him what to do? Did
you already finish learning everything
came out till now, at least part of it?"
This is
This is what it is. Yeah. So, it came
out
No, the Rebbe didn't give it out. They
came out building a bigger Yeah, then
that's it. We had to
It's like all the times he used to ask a
question uh later fast now.
That's the way the regular language
right there is what the Rebbe explains
later fast now. The Rebbe would signal
around the world later fast now.
Make a comment, you don't understand ask
him a Rebbe he'll explain you.
It was a time they stopped even Rebbe's
started writing a different language so
not to get uh
But this is part of part of the work.
Um
a few um
about talking about the Rebbe
the Rebbe had a day that today all the
Rebbe had a total of 24 hours.
Um
This had nothing to do with came out of
the test the the jubilee of 50 years of
the Rebbe's birthday.
It was I was working in the Rebbe's
house but suddenly the Rebbe called me.
And he tells me that the Rebbe said that
if
someone will prepare and give him in the
Rebbe's house he'll be my gear. I was
going to ask uh
I ran to label all 10.
I asked him to write it up. Actually, we
found out
years later whenever it was that the
Rebbe had my gear already that Rebbe had
the book in a white printed book of all
the building Rebbe's house connected
with the Rebbe.
And the Rebbe already had my gear
because
because Shmuel Gurary from Montreal,
Shmuel Gurary which is a relative and
good close friend of the Rebbe, had
asked the Rebbe, someone asked him
Shmuel Gurary, the Rebbe told that
person he could ask himself. He could
ask me and he asked and the Rebbe
practically went with my gear. Not only
the Maimonides written there like a
sicha, the way the Rebbe spoke in Tof
Shin Gimmel, uh Tof Shin Daled, the biur
Poshka says to the biur and the one
friendly Rebbe.
But we didn't know about it was already
a ghost from the Rebbe. Nobody told us.
And Walter Runab the Rebbe was magi'd.
And uh
gave it out that Maimon. And actually in
the Pesach Dovo
it says
over there that the Maimon is
me'usad
on the Maimon of Pitas. It was a biur on
the Maimon of Chodesh V'Eish Pitas of
the Rebbe's Hashem.
But the Rebbe fixed in the Pesach Dovo
and he wrote like this.
The Rebbe wrote over there K'ni'ra who
me'usad. Like basically it's not the
Rebbe writing this Dovo. Mareches Tzach
Tzidkim. How do you know what's me'usad
what not? You are writing with the
Mareches Tzach Tzidkim writing that we
think it's not the first time the Rebbe
did the same and and some other Maimon
like this.
Even though in the Muga the way it was
magi'd first, it said over there biur
and the other part it says biur also
that sicha of Shavuos Yud Gimmel.
Uh because this was obvious to everyone
but that the Rebbe says, how do you know
what it is? This is This is my Maimon.
Now um
I would like to start about the
Maimonim. The project.
>> Project Likutei Sichos.
Well, project of the Kuntreisim.
Uh So basically the Rebbe says what to
him show about this that
over the years there were various
Maimonim that were Muga.
You know, the whole Chelek Alef, the
whole Likutei Alef is basically those
Maimonim and then all the rest
is the what you're calling the project
of Maimonim from Tof Shin Mem Vov,
right?
Sure. Even in in in that first volume
I mean, what's my bagel? It's very
interesting.
times right before for sunset before
Thomas.
The other side of my mirror and reveal
prepared it. It was the biggest sale by
the people that Friday night. I'm saying
my own It's more than a haggish. Friday
night in the back of what the other
brings.
They were doing by Weinberg with house
in the
other side of the house and the other
people hooked up there to him.
And it was so hooked up there and
standing and watching people housing
that the other people came out early,
came down early to go to Shabbos.
He walked in
and the people took time for people to
realize that the other people are coming
in for Shabbos. And I had a feeling that
time that because of that the other
people are going to get the other people
actually the other people came out after
that.
>> What's the cause what? Cuz the other
people had so much more Seeing the other
people
>> Seeing the people
closer in the in the other people. My
own
kind of a kosher.
Uh, my mother in the other people was to
my mother and the other people was my
gear.
The other people wanted it to get
everywhere as possible to show above.
Um
I was upstairs. I wasn't working those
years.
It was there but I was there as a great
thing in that and they were printing so
I took one of those my morning.
Before it was yet the dirty one that he
measures to see if it's folding properly
printing in the proper place. I had one
in my pocket a dirty my mother with ink.
And I was downstairs when the other
people came up from Kines.
And walked came out from the elevator
and he turned to the other people to the
other people and he and he says, "Is the
my mother here already?" I put standing
there so I grabbed out of my pocket and
gave it to the other people to give it
to the other people. Later they gave him
a good printed my mother. Just saying.
And then I went uh
to the airport. We tried to find someone
to try to get it somewhere in Canada.
And so I said not so simple.
And surely so I'm involved the other
people was my gear and though it wasn't
given in it was like a knock given in
with a real prepared it after that
happened.
So you're you're going to remember a few
single ones. But then the point is the
whole
in those years only two my mom that I
was my gear.
I think Boston going to put a few
comments but it didn't come out as a
knock. It's not printed. As mugged it.
The whole of it sign. It's interesting
that I could assist us.
The assist there was like a say that I'm
obviously going to say that I'm done and
stopped but there's a regular say that I
have a sickness or being mugged but then
I didn't have any say there really.
No, but this was the say that was only
after I was looking at this is to give
in before to the river. I'll soon come
to this whole idea. Could say this is
Different idea. You're preparing from
years ago for this service. My mom is
after the river spoke. The whole of it
sign two mugged it three mugged it in my
mom. I'm talking everything that came
out at the time. The whole of it test
only two my mom and my mugged it one
atom itself of my yell. The other one
atom itself of service and it's over
which was only found.
I don't know where. It's none of my
business. It was found after a given
Thomas.
Um
To show me
only a few my mom and my mugged it. The
whole of my mom of only one mugged it in
my mom. I'm talking everything before
the project of the my mom.
The whole of my mom base all together
one my mom came out on a personal over
on going to stand there was my gear the
knock it and only one more my mom in in
in the project. Now um we always tried
this was uh
tried to always scream forever to get
out from the river the river should my
gear something.
I wasn't already working in the sickness
since uh
basic time I got married 711. Yeah.
Since uh
then on this time
>> The knock is is a bachelor project.
My
mom love.
I was still involved in
things but I decided
since coming up um
uh same say for Taylor clothing, that's
going to be finished by the Sifre and
Isru Chag Shavuos.
But I got a file that maybe we should
take the Maimuna learning Sifre Sifre
Torah that I said by the completion of
Sifre Sifre Torah at Shabbos 10 Shvat.
And giving it in, this was a hanacha of
the style of hanachas.
I I'm not I don't write for my mom. I
worked through all of that much and then
Sholom Hurwitz fixed it there.
I typed it up and gave it in.
A short while later,
um
I meet Rabbi Groner.
And Rabbi Groner says, "Who is asking
for the Maimuna?" The Rabbi just give
out Maimuna. Who is requesting it? I
never heard of anything like this. You
know, when someone has to request, the
Rabbi once gives out.
What am I doing now? I went to Rabbi
Leibel Groner, which is the best way.
It was I mean, you didn't realize that
it was an interesting thing that you on
your own giving a Maimuna. The Rabbi has
a choice to give out whatever he wants.
But It never happened. I mean, usually
there's a guf that that gives it, you
know.
>> That That That wasn't I don't believe
that was the issue. But why is the Rabbi
suddenly giving out the Maimuna? Mhm.
So, I went but I couldn't tell Rabbi
Leibel Groner what exactly is going on
here. This is all things that uh
Today you could share it.
They share everything today.
And I asked him I told him kind of
something the most What I asked from him
was I need an empty stationery of this
Rivka
with your signature on the bottom. I
need to type up a letter there.
He looked at me like suspicious. What am
I trying to like something He looked at
me like I know him from before. I know
him well.
Uh
But I kind of half words and he gave me
I typed up a settlement in his name that
he's asking the Rabbi the Maimuna.
Gave the Maimuna to the Rabbi. And my
luck my mazel the Rabbi was my good
Maimuna. Okay, we're preparing the
Maimuna for second ago. Obviously, you
write a best of all the world and best
of all that says Makasha. You ever saw
the best of all the world?
>> Yeah. Makasha Maknos Sifre Sifre Torah
whatever for this
the
Rebbe takes and cuts off the whole
um
most of it and writes simple as that
because
in the table
I don't know whatever the rest of the
table
Now,
what I do
I said
what I do I told
I said we decided we going to tell
you get the whole
for all the
is going to be the
for the same table
and that was good enough.
After that I said to myself, look if if
it's a Yom Tov
for my mom
why not you'd be Thomas?
I had the mind of I kept copies of
things that we all can would give in
other years or which never came out
which I kept copies uh
I had the mind of
which was prepared on the request of the
Rebbe from the three my mom
the three my mom the three my mom of
Sukkot and
you can do it 12 times
which was prepared by the Rebbe all the
time
and I took it as it is
my mom came in this was so bad
that uh
at the time the Rebbe mentioned he was
basing it on a my mom
we guessed and my mom came in guessed it
was
because my mom came in Rebbe my mom it
says that the Rebbe wrote a my mom
at that point the Rebbe when he passed
away.
But we weren't sure but I just give it
in as is and
I went that time in the cats cuz I came
back and the Rebbe gave out the my mom
of course and wrote the the my mom came
in the same way I am like exclamation
mark like of course I
I added all the my mom came in so
missing I updated everything everything
was already many minutes for this is
this is 10 years later.
After that I decided you know if it
sounds like you don't have to
also
and then the rest is history rush
uh
>> [clears throat]
>> And all those Kuntresim came to Rosh
Hashanah,
uh
because uncorrectly in the safer I'm a
Bosel I got to share the caliph,
you have the Maimer of the start of of
of of Rosh Hashanah.
The two Maimer made in Elam and Yom
Shorashon and the Elam.
And the Maimer of Sukkos and the Maimer
of Shmini Atzeres K'seder all not with
the same Kuntres.
The Rebbe was shown, I gave it to the
Rebbe, I have it, a Shaa Blatt, a big
Shaa Blatt printed Kuntres Rosh Hashanah
Tav Shin Mem Zayin. The Rebbe approved
it.
And actually it was printed then, but by
the printing machine of Anach Vil Hak.
With the name Kuntres, the same thing
was the Sukkos was printed name Kuntres.
And the same thing Shmini Atzeres
K'seder.
But when the Vad reprinted it cuz they
needed to have the holy Acius, not the
not the old, the Frank Hill of the
regular machines,
so they changed the name the way they
liked.
Actually, by the time they printed the
Meluket Chelek Bais,
they already knew
that
this is what the Rebbe wanted. They saw
the Rebbe is continuing Kuntresim.
And I think, and I spoke to him lately
to one of those people, that they should
put in all those Maimerim also that a
safer is not normal to start from
Yitzkis. It doesn't make sense.
I don't know, maybe they someone
reprinted even though the still relevant
cuz we have the Toras Menachem.
Um
And then the rest is history. Rebbe
started being Magia.
Uh of course, the work was this was an
addition to other work. I also worked
for a living. Uh it was day and night
sitting with with Rebbe Yael.
Uh
mostly at night.
Uh something later, I think in the late
Tav Shin Mem Ches,
um
uh Chaim Sholom will helped me out, but
I think most of those my mom
most of them I typed. I did the simple
mom came as
um to be able to do it and where were
you doing it?
>> would write. And whenever he had a
place, where was he going to sit?
Sometimes in his office, sometimes he
came partly came to my house.
>> [clears throat]
>> He came to my house and sat the whole
night. Not Rebbe, I was up with him just
to keep him company.
And the few little pieces of silver we
had in our office, most probably didn't
have doors with glass.
In the morning everything was had to be
shined again from a new. My kids had no
clue in the morning to ask who is this
old man with a white beard sitting here
a whole night. Uh but this is what it
was. They needed to be shined again from
the from the smoke. From the smoke of
the cigarettes. The whole house was
Today it's it's unacceptable. The Rebbe
needed two things to to write a mom or
sicha.
He would need cigarettes
and something to eat which always meant
sardines. Today they don't even sell
them in stores. They
are not so healthy.
And it's interesting
>> very healthy. You should take it out. I
talk about cigarettes that
the sardines After chossein oder, he
asked who wants to buy him a pack of
cigarettes. I said no, now I'm not
buying you anymore. Till now I had no
choice. I had to provide the cigarettes,
but now I'm not buying you anymore
cigarettes. Uh it is
um
So, and like this we worked all the time
putting a a lot of time.
Um
>> [clears throat]
>> It's it's something interesting. This
was the mom of chof cheshvan of yud alef
mamar chossein tov sholom tzion it came
out tov sholom tzion.
Um
This is also in likutei sichos chelek
alef vol 11 contresim.
As it said over there on each one on the
passover on top was typed contres chof
cheshvan contres sukkos contres minchas
cheres.
Um
And that one on the pastor Dover with
the galleries
the long papers that just have to give
them a gift of time was
11 by 17 folded in half.
Uh the Rebbe wrote that ain't no small
government like you have my mind either
palm Vader palm Vader over safe.
There is no time to make it a mind again
again and there's no end to it.
And then there was another piece written
there
uh about something specific
and the Rebbe wrote that it seems their
opinion is
that they have to explain in the whole
of this mind every place in Humash
it says you you the word you dear
and the sheet of Russia and the the UK
and everything could be explained.
And then the Rebbe said also there's a
mix of quality from a year question
mark.
In that letter in the whole of this is
explained about the sheet there
at the time I I remember
uh Rebbe Yael did not exactly know if it
was referring to the mind even though
there is real data in that mind there.
It could be there was something else
that the Rebbe used this pastor Dover
to write. I never went to verify to find
out
I wouldn't be able to either they
wouldn't tell me.
Um
from Tuv Shevat I said Shawl helped out
a lot. We ended up one time she said of
some place in Montgomery I don't
remember I remember the basement on
Crown close to uh
New York Avenue we said there for quite
a while.
And sometimes in the mind also is uh
Yitzchak
of Yitzchak
he was a fast typist a very young boy
who would help me out
here and there sometimes a few times to
type.
Um
Now um
Now at the same time uh
when I worked in the office
Um
I also besides making my own came as I
also typed
the transcripts word for word.
I believe the first time was sometimes
time was long and heavy, but mostly I
started it from beginning of number 12.
Everything till um
till the last day. 99% A few of them
were typed by my good friend Levi
Yitzchok. He also know how to type
transcripts.
>> Transcripts of what? Word for word what
the Rebbe said in order to make the
nocha. Mhm. The point is that after the
nocha was made, at least by nocha number
11 nocha number 12 from my mother of
middle of my mother of till the end when
you finish the nocha, you have the nocha
next to you, you you rewrite, edit it
properly. When you finish,
you don't keep the transcript. Nobody
thought it's going to come a time
that people are going to want to learn
Yiddish, sit to a tape, a video, and and
and follow a transcript. Therefore, most
of the sicha's
that I typed, I typed two copies with a
carbon paper,
and everything went uh to the so-called
shamuses. Altogether, I saved from those
years like
2,000 pages half an hour a box,
which means that everything after 5709
order, I started typing from 5714.
But
by 5722 I should have had everything,
but since I don't have anything,
so I have to continue
all the years further. Also, some people
needed today digitally.
But uh tapes of all of this.
Yes, but you have to redo when I sit and
type. I remember that farbrengen cuz I
typed it then.
And when you think about the amount of
farbrengens
in the mems
5711 and 5712
So, I have everything finished till 5728
in general.
Uh but the other ones have tons of them
finished, but there's still so much work
when you think how much work there's
still to retype. So, you got you you've
been going through all the sicha's and
that.
>> I
I now I I didn't do it anymore by order
just for
interesting.
>> Why are you doing it for?
First of all, the stuff has to be typed
word for word. I'm doing all the stuff
for the hack today.
Um also that I'm doing it because
I think one day people would like to
have
the transcript to be able to Let us like
the stuff that came from you also,
right? The stuff that came I did for him
all the years. Jam I did all the years.
Uh
there's a bits and pieces.
Um So, you're planning on on doing all
that?
>> I am continuing non-stopped. Tons of
work for the amount of time.
On the form of them you have to have
patience. It's not easy when you see a
for bringing. When a for bringing is
short, you could type it much faster
because it prints it so much quicker.
You know it's going to take short
because faster. When a for bringing is
50 pages in double space, that's 25 in
single space or 30 or 35.
Uh
the stuff I get is this one I'm just
writing word for word.
From the end of the stuff I get
>> it once.
I tried it once just for a stand and
experiment. It's very difficult. Yeah.
Uh from the end of the stuff I get I
have to say it was already a computer,
but after MS-DOS finished it went over
word. I gave someone to transfer all the
stuff.
Not all of them were transferred. Quite
a bit of them I typed and they weren't
transferred.
But more
I have from the end of the stuff I get
quite a bit.
>> when is the are you going to be able to
do it? I keep on asking people and I do
follow like no things even though it's
not my not my level of
not my ball park, but I'd like to follow
and I always ask people if you could do
it from a tape cuz it's interesting. I
remember in the early 70s
that by the airport when we had the
airport used to be office. Nobody sat
there. And you saw a machine was called
date matrix.
There must be someone was typing
somewhere else or speaking. I don't know
if someone typing. and it was typing the
message here in this office and I always
said I wish uh
it could be something for the tape
something else. A lot of them I have on
paper
but you can't do it without program cuz
it's not so clear and the amount of
mistakes we'll make it's not worth it
>> [clears throat]
>> to retype.
I actually it's not negated to this but
since you mentioned this
uh for instance all the weekday for
bring ins
from Yud Alef till Lamed is 1200 pages 8
and 1/2 by 11 single space.
Just Lamed Vov itself
is like 700 pages. Lamed Ches
which you think the Rebbe spoke so
little like the Rebbe expressed himself
says my mom read notes 7 minutes what
are we doing there in the office?
The light is on the whole night. We
didn't know we didn't pay attention that
the Rebbe says the window to us. As soon
as we found out the window sheet was by
your sister by the Rashag. We never paid
attention he's across the roof over
there.
When I heard from my brother reported
the Rebbe asked him what's going on the
man for bring to was 10 minutes why the
sitting Were you sitting in the library?
No in Hanachos Maymim in the office
across the
>> see 788 from the apartment right yeah.
Yeah because officially the Cheder Yugud
of Gan Yisroel's office is a short
garage. Mhm. But we didn't pay attention
of whose whose house this is. I never
looked. My brother came and said that
the Rebbe asked him he told the Rebbe
it's my brother that's irrelevant. But
the Rebbe said the man read 7 minutes
they're officially the Rebbe speaking 10
minutes after we sit. So he explained
the Rebbe was preparing a girl. When I
heard that you know what I did I'm sorry
to say next morning I went we had no
shades I bought a shade. So the window
should be closed that's all I need.
>> [clears throat]
>> The Rebbe forgot the pulling the
reporting yeah. Yeah reporting.
Um
so after that Lamed Tes Lamed Ches
itself is like 900 pages one year. Lamed
Tes is my stomach
>> [clears throat]
>> is is over 1000 pages.
So I I I took a little break I lost say
there and I started working only the end
of the pogus which means
by now I typed up all the end of the
pogus the year, all days that are
connected with the Rebbeim, all the
fabrengens of days connected to Rebbeim.
In addition also Purim, also Assarah
B'Teves, also Shivas Tammuz, also Lag
B'Omer. But basically on the order of
the Yom HaMevuarach, and there's a lot
of other fabrengens which I did here and
there.
Still a lot of work that I can make up
care for Hashem.
I I work as much as I could to do it.
Um
Okay, so
I I you you have more or or I have a
question.
I know you're also involved in the
Michtavim Klalim of the Rebbe. What what
was what was your involvement in that?
Uh since I was working in Hanachos,
at at a certain point of Shin Lamed Vov,
uh my brother asked me to come help him
to work on the on the letter. The seder
was that uh Reb Nissan Mindel the Rebbe
would dictate to Reb Nissan Mindel
uh practically a sicha, what the letter
should be.
Actually years later when Reb Nissan
Mindel, I guess couldn't hear so good,
they even said there should be
recordings from him. And obviously if I
would ever get a hold of a recording
like this, a letter is like four five
four pages. If you take a sicha half
hour you could make a nice beautiful
sicha. Uh uh uh uh uh I guess it's a
Michtav Klali written for newspaper.
And Reb Nissan Mindel would I I guess
type up the
the letter at home. He would add the
introduction like uh Shana Tova. I don't
know. Uh Chayel whatever it is.
>> [clears throat]
>> And then
>> he would do the English and the Yiddish?
Uh one one second. No.
So I um
So Reb Groner the Rebbe would take the
letter that Reb Nissan Mindel prepared,
which was untyped on onion skin paper,
which means there was an original plus
onion skin paper.
And but the Rebbe worked on the onion
skin paper.
And then again the Rebbe's corrections,
it depends how sharp the pencil were
throughout all the years. Sometimes
uh some sometimes you would get
a sicha, you were able
>> an original stencil with the Rebbe's
Haggadah.
This is uh onion skin paper, which is
thin paper, so you could type a few
copies.
>> So, this is this is a stencil or is it
onion skin? This is something else.
>> paper, which means put in a regular
piece of paper, and then you put a
carbon paper.
You could still buy it in the store,
maybe they still sell the carbon paper.
And then another one or two of these, so
you have a copy for the Rebbe and maybe
even this Mendel.
And the Rebbe always worked on this one
kind of not to ruin the original. This
is one with a few corrections. Maybe
it's not the first Haggadah.
But then you used to see sometimes
the [clears throat] Haggadahs, you could
even figure out sometimes where the
Rebbe wrote the Haggadahs, where they
were written on a table that was clear
for the Rebbe on top of bunch of other
a bunch of other things.
And sometimes you see it was written
from the way the pencil was.
We knew it was written on the Rebbe's at
home, which the
maybe the the
>> [clears throat]
>> the table cloth was silk, and you see
all the words
are kind of broken according to the way
we write on something underneath, which
is silk, soft.
>> So, you you were you were typing, that
was it.
>> So, after the Rebbe was magi'ah, Rabbi
Mendel would would write out the
dictation, prepare a letter the Rebbe
would magi'ah from top to bottom.
Uh you could see here tons of big full
hours, there was very little space for
the Rebbe.
And then
Rabbi Groner would type it up.
And then you have to make mar'ei
mekomos.
Cuz the Rebbe would write certain things
and leave empty, and you could see all
along I have many samples here, I didn't
read them.
That the Rebbe
said, "I already taken that at mar'ei
mekomos another time. I have no time to
go look for it."
So, basically
uh
the Rebbe would leave things empty, you
should put in the mar mokim where
exactly the possuk is.
Reb Groner asked me to help him. We went
to the Rebbe's library. Reb Groner would
write the mar mokims? He would type up
the letter. He would have to fill in the
missing mar mokims.
>> he kept that job always the the like I
guess he had it before also.
And we did that in the library. The
library was before it was
end of lamed vov where Reb Berel Levin
started organize good library. But also
library you don't have like in a small
room all the sforim. I helped him a
little bit. Then I remember I think it
was end of um
lamed vov I don't remember I saw
I was helping with an air in downstairs
where the magnet in that room where the
Rebbe walks out. And I see the Rebbe
going home. In my calculation the Rebbe
was going to write to work on a miktav
klali. I see the Rebbe going home with
two volumes of likut sichos in his hand.
I think one of them was chelek
daled which has in its office the
miktavim klalim
of
of I guess till taf shin chof gimmel.
I'm sorry. I'm going to look a little
bit at the notes.
In that one in chelek daled had miktavim
klalim from taf shin nun chof daled.
It came out taf shin chof daled had the
the letter of of yemos haMoshiach chof
gimmel. Chelek tes which actually
printed taf shin lamed hey it had all
the miktavim klalim from taf shin yud
till taf shin lamed daled.
Because chelek yud daled with its office
with all the miktavim klalim which
actually printed uh uh
end of lamed ches.
And then the Rebbe would come back.
The Rebbe took it to make mar mokims. He
took the letter with him and he took the
two sforim.
And then when the Rebbe would come back
next day
you had um
the letter the Rebbe would make mar
mokims.
And for instance on a certain thing of
like Khayel that seems gullah, the Rebbe
would say in a b'sach Khuntres Khayel
Tof Shin Gimmel
which was printed many, many years ago
cuz in that letter
in Likutei Sichos the Rebbe took home
which was from old year before the Sefer
HaSichos Tof Shin Gimmel was printed, I
think it was Tof Shin Daled. Whatever it
is or different things like this which
were
the mamakim was uh like something that
majority of people don't even have it
anymore.
Like the Rebbe wrote to us once uh on a
certain Muggid Shiur with Sefer
HaLikutei Sichos which wasn't yet
uh a liquid, wasn't printed yet and the
Rebbe wrote on it Nimtzo Rak Echad
B'Vais Shnaim Shprakh Ha'Am expression.
Who has a single
uh liquid of Likutei Sichos?
Uh
so it was suggested
that instead of the Rebbe having to to
do this
that we should prepare the simple
mamakim is psukim
Chazal, the regular things that already
the Rebbe has in other places Sefer
and type it up double space and give it
in to the Rebbe.
And the Rebbe will uh add whatever
ha'aros he wants, whatever mamakim he
wants.
And that's how uh it started. We
used to prepare
um
and give it in to the Rebbe and the
Rebbe would add mamakim.
Uh and then after the second typing
which is that's when we did it we did
mamakim.
Um
concerning uh
by now everyone knows that um
in special maimorim Yom Tov
official maimorim
>> You finished it in Michtav Klali?
>> No, no, no, no, I want to mention
special in Michtav Klali we knew from
here and there that the Rebbe likes in
every Michtav Klali
should be
um
Shas Bavli
Yerushalmi, Rashi
all the Rabbeinu, Zera
certain list of things that had to be
there.
Also, the my Ma'amorim had to be all the
the Rabbeinu.
>> did this list come from? Just this
People knew him as the time of the
Rebbe. You could see here and there and
other places that people didn't think
that it was Maggid. He had it in some
place. In the Ma'amar Chabad of Tof Shin
Daled, Sabeel. He had it in a certain
place. K'mo V'or
uh b' b' Drushas Ma'amar Tzemach Tzedek
b'kama Without even saying where. The
Tzemach Tzedek was in the Ma'amar. He
has to be.
>> the Rebbe wanted this? Yes. And and of
course from a certain year on, also his
father had to be taken. Now,
when you come to take an apostil
a Rashi, a a Gemara
you could find it.
A Yerushalmi
you could also
take on the same Bavli way it's in
Yerushalmi.
When it comes to the Rabbeinu
how many forms of Rabbeinu were printed?
And with no Maftechos, how do you find
something?
But we knew the Rebbe wants it
at a certain point.
Uh the letter was supposed to be given
it to Rebbe night before he goes home to
work on it at night.
But it was missing.
After hard work, it was missing a few
Rabbeinu, especially the Rabbeinu that
don't have Maftechos of those years.
Uh the Rebbe Maharash
A few Rabbeinu were missing.
And uh a note was written to the Rebbe
that we still missing these three
Rabbeinu.
And we worked on it uh at night
trying to find. Uh the Rebbe, besides
everything as we all know, is a
gentleman.
Uh by the morning when the Rebbe came, I
was
I was ready with a paper with the things
missing to give it to Rabbi Groner
to give it to the Rebbe. But the Rebbe
got it. The Rebbe gave out
what he had prepared. And over there
I have a photocopy of it, a a little
paper where the Rebbe wrote the names of
all the Rebbeim.
And
checked off which ones he already had.
And then the Rebbe himself filled in
the Rebbeim that were still missing when
it was prepared
beforehand.
Of course, the Rebbe would never tries
never to erase what someone else did.
Putting those also.
Um
And uh
like this it um
at the used to be typed.
And the Rebbe would fix it. We had to
retype it till the third time we typed
it up nice, ready for for the Rebbe to
sign.
In those years the negatives was printed
used to be printed letters to be printed
either was small as we like this or
later on two pages when it came more
more mkames.
And
when the Rebbe had to sign the letter in
those years the negative machines, the
real negatives,
I don't know why, but it wouldn't be
able to pick up a blue signature. If the
Rebbe would sign with his blue pen,
so they would give him the Rebbe a
a nice
easy flowing pen, a black one. This was
the hazakah of of Shalom Jacobson, alav
hashalom.
And together with the letter the Rebbe I
would go on and give him the Rebbe would
sign. But it happened that the Rebbe
signed
the original with his signature, but he
still fixed a few corrections. What do
you do? In the olden years you see
letters here and there printed, and you
have a correction
by hand, but in those years already this
wasn't acceptable. So we practically if
the Rebbe would fix
uh a few words in a line,
you wouldn't cut the Rebbe
want to get ruin the Rebbe's original.
Someone wanted to keep it.
Not me, but someone wanted to keep it.
And um
so we would cut it and type over this
one line and the way to tighten the
space, you go after space back. So you
could add a few words. Sometimes you had
no choice. From whatever the Rebbe's
correction was, you had to finish typing
till the end of the letter, retyping,
and then put the Rebbe's last paragraph
with the Rebbe's signature.
>> It's copy paste.
Yeah, in the negative. Not uh you
wouldn't ruin it with wax the original
in negative. They did that.
Um then at a certain point, and later
after the letter was mugged a few times,
now Rabbi Nissan Mindel at the same time
the Rebbe was magi'a, he already was
writing the letter in English.
He didn't have the Rebbe's corrections.
After the Rebbe would give out the first
time corrections, which were a lot of
corrections,
>> Cuz he wasn't there. He was in the Long
Island, I think.
So Rabbi Groner would ask you sometimes
to go on the telephone and Rabbi Nissan
Mindel didn't hear good. I would have to
scream on top of scream on top of my
lungs telling him the Rebbe's
corrections.
And then then the Rebbe made more
corrections, more corrections.
Therefore, when the when the English
letter came to the Rebbe and the Rebbe
was magi'a it.
Uh
this one time I see on a letter
that the Rebbe writes in it on a certain
word he circled around
wasn't my job. He circled around the
word and he's asking to whoever's
working that with it's Rabbi Nissan
Mindel or whoever's working. He wants to
know if this English word is the proper
translation for that Yiddish word.
I see it. I see Rabbi Klein said, "I I
don't understand. The Rebbe could write
whatever he wants." He said, "You want
to know the way the Rebbe works on the
letters in English? He sits down with
the final printed
Michtav Klali in Yiddish, puts it next
to him,
puts the English and he compares them
both.
That's why this is what happened later.
It's already in time of uh Rabbi Yisrael
Yitzchak Oh Shalom, that the Rebbe was
kind of commented he's not a
proofreader, they should do it all
themselves.
What?
To to fix the letter, it doesn't have to
look it over the English letter.
Mhm.
Part of it then that to make a touch
tomorrow chemist with other caption from
the inside just with numbers.
And then they would also do it in
Hebrew.
>> him again English or is it a I I don't
know.
>> He signed it. I don't know how many
times it was Maggid, but he wanted
someone else
to do
things that the Rebbe the Rebbe simple a
proofreader which all the years was like
this. I still remember the time
when I give him on the dial they were
giving things to the Rebbe that they
knew
they didn't even look if there was any
mistakes. The Rebbe was doing all the
job to fix the mistakes.
In in in in the later years
when we didn't have time we came right
away we started doing already
typesetting right typing it on a
computer you could fix it so we rent
Empire Press.
But we didn't have time to look it over.
The Rebbe was going to Dale. So we would
write on the letter that this letter was
not proofread yet. We're doing it now.
The Rebbe should know. There were times
the Rebbe took it was Maggid on the way
to the Ahel.
And the Rebbe Kinsky already had that
time of a heavy big telephone in the car
or talking about the design or I don't
remember when.
And he would call me with some
corrections uh
and
>> the in the car on the way? Yeah, on the
way.
Um
the same thing was uh
they would would write to the Rebbe that
it wasn't looked over that we're going
to do it, you know.
Um like this then started with the
computers.
And
and then again everything was done under
pressure. The Rebbe must come out
uh
at certain point. And there was one time
that I even remember what it is. It's
interesting.
Uh I think the Rebbe wrote something
about Chassal Seder Pesach Hilchos A the
issue was whether it says Seder Pesach
Hilchos A or Sidor Pesach Hilchos A.
In those years where we're going to look
for these things, we know it's a
computer and no nothing or on the
library it was would be impossible.
No, but we don't say that. No vote from
Frederick that the did not put in the
cell. But the made a certain comment I
think about that.
I don't know if it's national. You tell
me you know it's national. Whatever the
way it says whether it's whether it's
Sido Pessa or Seder Pessa.
And the left that he wants to put in
a
a mar mokem.
The letter
The went to the ale that day. The was
going back home soon.
And mar mokem for what?
I'm sorry about this way the way whether
it's written Seder Pessa or Sido Pessa.
I'm sorry we we don't even know how to
look for this. I'm sorry to say.
Um
And the letter has to be printed by the
morning. The is going home now and this
is missing. The left two circles empty.
Not having a choice, I'm sorry to say I
went downstairs in the 1980 holding the
long gallis
hoping that the Rabbi Groner is going to
come out from the room
before the comes out and I'll first give
him the letter and tell him to go him
back and ask the to
To my um muscle
the walks out from the room before.
I see the walking out. I move back. Of
course I wasn't going to talk to the to
The turns around to me. He asked me
what's real still.
So I said nothing. So the says
Mr. And
I mean the saw that I came here with
something holding my hands for
something. I mean obviously by that time
must have really some commotion going on
outside in the 1980.
He pushed himself through the and I
walked over.
Uh
I didn't talk to the
the The Rebbe here going to next to him.
I told Rebbe Groner, "I think you have
even
footnote was left empty."
And the Rebbe turns around and tells to
Rebbe Groner,
"I already gave it to you this
afternoon."
I mean, things were very hectic. He
didn't have a chance. There's no rush.
He didn't have a chance to give it over
to me. But I knew it needs to go to
print. I didn't know.
>> gave to to Rebbe Groner He told him in
the afternoon what to write here. I
think it was about that or something
else.
I understand the whole story cuz it's a
it's a it's a marker for this besides
Haggadah.
I don't remember it was exactly No, if
this if you write Seder or Siddur Pesach
Hilchos say
>> So, what's a marker for the Nusach
Haggadah? No, we're starting with
different Haggadahs that the way they
say it has different Nakudas. So, the
Rebbe gave a a marker I think it was
that. I'm almost sure it was that. It
could be Maybe it was already printed.
Maybe I could check it up. I mean, it
would be a big amount of time to put
into that.
Um
Anyhow, so
then but everything was done in
pressure. Now, in the Michtovim, always
the end of the Michtav Klali
the Rebbe would always add the Pasuk of
the Kapitel. In the if the it would be
two letters, it would be a letter of a
Yoder. A Shkedeish Nish and Av Nish.
Later came three letters and Av Nish. In
the letter closer to Pesach The Rebbe's
Kapitel. The Rebbe's Kapitel.
This, of course, was not in part of the
dictation. Avremel
couldn't write it. And the Rebbe would
add this
connected part of the Brocha.
I remember the Bochurim
I don't think those years already
started the new idea of a Nigun a new
Nigun a old Nigun for the Kapitel, but
never decided yet
which Psukim they should
they should pick for the for the Nigun.
And they would always wait I should tell
them uh
what Pasuk did the Rebbe write like this
again a day earlier to have time. What
did the Rebbe write? Which plastic did
the Rebbe write?
Um and I have it still everything is
done under major pressure. I mean, I'm
sorry. Mind you, I mean, I had a job to
work. I got married the Shiva Mitzvah
Mitzvah
and all this was done on my
uh partially on my free time the whole
night and I wish it would be at night,
but it ended up a lot of times uh
uh for some reasons ended up being uh in
the middle of the day when I was already
at work getting a telephone call. Come
back, we need to do this need to do
that.
But this is uh I had a big schmooze I
was able to work on those all those
things.
>> You did it in 2008?
Uh yes. Yes. Did you also work on
letters that the Rebbe wrote like for
dinners and things?
Um
Rabbi Nissan Mindel stopped writing um
Taf Shin Mem Ches.
Uh I think his wife wasn't well or some
other reason.
Uh
one letter
Rabbi Groner prepared.
Um You told me the Michtavim Klolim.
>> Yeah, I think Pesach from Ches if I'm
not mistaken.
Um maybe it was based on a farbrengen
maybe the Rebbe told him inside the
room. Later on uh the Vaad
uh some of Rabbi Groner give it over to
the Vaad. Sometimes the Rebbe would
either by farbrengen you saw the Rebbe
speaking a whole sicha like when Yaakov
couldn't enough. You heard by the
farbrengen already he's dictating here
Mhm. a statement. It was very obvious.
You felt it. Or they got paper and and
the sichos to And then it's a Taf Shin
Mem Ches
I think at a certain point
Rabbi Nissan Mindel
couldn't do anymore the so-called
Michtavim Klolim Protims for the dinners
the all those things.
So I also helped out technically. For
instance, you had to
um
when the Rebbe writes a letter to
Mesayemess to graduation
you have to see which school when
they're graduating and their name should
be spelled properly.
Uh the regular language of a letter
usually is
uh the minor hit awesome it is
a scheme she it is a scheme she is a
scheme she is kind.
I say you have to change it with
different cuz the same letter was sent
to many different organizations.
>> referring to longer letters that are
written for like a dinner of a message.
Um maybe I'll get to it soon.
Um
so basically a letter is based
uh the minor
hit awesome it is a scheme she is a
scheme she is kind.
And you look at an invitation, put in
the proper date cuz the same letter was
going
to different schools, different places.
Other
hit awesome it is a scheme she
one of them is
she is kind of scheme she is kind of
scheme she is kind of
scheme she is kind whatever it is and I
mean a lot of I answered your question a
lot of those new stuff of the letter
is already from different years and
used to be the Rebbe
as one gram or whatever that time the
Rebbe used to cook
whatever it was
the time the Rebbe cook about the
Yom Tov including three days
with Shabbos
uh different things like this. Um
so I helped out there too
and
but then started with computers was
ready computers
so it looked too nice
and the Rebbe didn't want to ruin it to
be my gear and I of course want the
Rebbe to be my gear.
So I saw from I learned from him even
though I don't write like such a great
guy like him but I would write on top of
the letter in big words had to you know
had no stationary yet and the Rebbe
would know but the Rebbe still was
afraid I saw one time the Rebbe was
afraid to fix just like
so even signed one time without the
stationary. So I added on top in big and
every letter had to take letter go with
two underlines.
And uh then after the Rebbe was
finishing it, we did the collection
computer, now we need to print it on a
stationery.
So uh my client wanted to give me
stationeries of the Rebbe, I refused to
take.
I don't want to keep the stationeries of
the Rebbe. I asked him to have only
three cuz if the stationery gets stuck
when you put in the machine to print,
it's not regular paper.
It was the paper with the water
watermarks, the famous fancy paper.
So I only kept with me
two or three pieces and then I would
give it to to print. Now,
how would I know if there's uh
uh
uh event coming?
So I worked and I would come usually
Shabbos uh before the farbrengen.
I would see uh Rabbi Groner.
And um
I would hear from him what are the
different things is there.
Uh
a dinner or some event which I didn't
keep up with. Uh I couldn't keep up with
the things that's going on.
It was one time I came Shabbos, it was
in the winter
and Rabbi Groner tells me that tomorrow
Sunday
there's a Chanukah sub bias of the
Lubavitcher Yeshiva. I don't know I
think it was tough shmuel, and I don't
remember. This building on Crown Street.
And
there has to be a letter.
I didn't know what to do. I said I'll
try my best. This is uh the first time a
letter of of of Lubavitcher Yeshiva of
this style. We have from other years.
And I didn't promise anything.
Um
I came out to Shabbos.
I boruch Hashem managed. Uh
I put it on the table, just stood
outside the Rebbe's door. Berke Unique,
my cousin,
was sitting there at that time. And I
put it out, I think it was 11:30 at
night.
I didn't know of anything. About 2:00 in
the morning
uh my cousin Berke Unique he me that the
letter came out. I come back to 770. I
see uh the letter and there's a little
piece of paper
upside down
and written on it a big ches, which
means chashoy
or charedi chof.
Of course, I uh
I turned it over. I'm sorry to say, I
take a look and uh
I see there a letter from uh
from the secretary
telling the Rebbe
uh
that and he didn't tell me that he's
preparing a note
relying on me.
I I told him I don't know if I'm going
to manage. He never told me he prepared
a note to the Rebbe that later on when
he left home that later on
uh
he told us Moshiach Buckie and he
attached it to the letter that with
surah of uh
the letter to Chanoch So by Simchas
Mimim asking the Rebbe if you could get
back the letter in the same night.
In order to be able to
have to sign it. We have to print it for
the dinner.
And that paper I didn't see it when the
letter came out. I see
the Rebbe writes in his scabbard the
chotzei salailam what's the Shabbos
Kodesh. I received it
midnight. Must be the Rebbe opened up
the door to take stuff from the table.
It was after 12:00 at night,
which is a holy thing. What if the Rebbe
worked all night? What's the difference
with It's kind of a a chutzpah that
you're giving me and the same thing was
with all the sichos later in the time of
Vadhanokh Mimim in the Mugdike
Farbrengens. Unlike Lack, I was coming
late and there were many times sometimes
the Rebbe clearly didn't make it as a
matter of principle
after chotzei I mean, what do you mean?
I
You need it tomorrow morning. I have to
work for you. And the Rebbe writes in
his scabbard chotzei salailam what's the
Shabbos Kodesh. Then the Rebbe says
if someone
b'mishuchidus l'eicha anusach hatarich
if someone must have b'mechudash Wow,
that tomorrow there's a there's a 7 up
you know.
Was this new you didn't know before? How
would you call the actually call this
question mark to exclamation mark like
like you didn't know before. I mean this
this is not to me. I don't mind if
you get sharpened so the Rabbi doesn't
matter
it's it's a source.
But this is talking about
about Was the Rabbi was the Rabbi sign
the letter? I'm sorry to say of course
he did. Did they have a choice? He did.
I'm sorry there's a I remember one time
a letter was prepared
uh
also like this he was giving it to the
Rabbi was properly in time.
And uh
the Rabbi gave it out he signed it.
In the morning by dollars this was
Grossman from Migdal Haemek I forgot his
name this are called air whatever it's
called.
>> Migdal Haemek Migdal Haemek
and he you know
he passed by the dollars he had a dinner
I think that day Sunday someone in
Manhattan I don't know which dinner
and the Rabbi turns around ask Rabbi
Groner
did you
give him he tells me did you get your
letter the guy says no the Rabbi turns
to Rabbi Groner and Rabbi Groner says
I'll give it to him later.
And the Rabbi says now.
Um
Hey we tried our best to He went out. to
work
Yeah he went away for a short time by
dollars
and he gave them the letter we tried our
best uh everyone working very hard
including Rabbi Groner I mean this was
uh
a day and night job.
It's interesting uh
the telegrams
of the Rabbi
I didn't do them. Actually
for a bunch of years Simon Jacobson did
them.
And there again what they did is like
the good olden times with the letters
they would take a telegram from a
previous year
change the date
and
telegram it says is the
is the haggadah sameach whatever it is.
And the Rebbe would add the possuk.
I don't I never figured out what
happened. The last telegram of the Rebbe
which is
Chanukah
Tav Shin Nun Bet. I don't know [snorts]
why.
Reb Itche Ganel called me was the middle
of the day
I should come and prepare. I didn't want
to ask him why the guy is not doing it
whatever it is.
I came back. I was working that time in
Williamsburg. I came back
and I prepared based on what the Rebbe
had spoken that time. Uh a normal type
type without the Rebbe having the possuk
we know already from
from from from different
michtovim.
And was uh normal telegram.
Punkt that telegram
the Rebbe was magiah added tons
of stuff.
Actually I have to say that that's one
one thing I miss out that I feel bad
till today that I don't have a copy of
it
because uh Reb Itche Ganel took it away
right away.
When I finished talking about the
Rebbe's ksav yad
um
we had no copy machines. One time the
Rebbe was magiah a shtikel sicha I think
for even was maybe a tzain teives brocha
to brochim.
The Rebbe was magiah and when we gave
him the second hagahah
there was
a lot of the words of the Rebbe written
away that you have to figure out only
only according to the teichen because it
was so hard written off the the corner
paper.
But this was a few words that time that
one word we couldn't figure out. With
all the effort
we couldn't so by the we gave him the
galus. It was one page.
Um so I suddenly get a telephone call.
Uh Reb Itche Ganel tells me the Rebbe
wants to see
his hagahah what he wrote.
I grabbed fast the original. I barely
made an uh uh uh uh a wet copy very
unclear copy.
I wasn't going to hold back and I ran
give it to our client our client called
me a little lady went into the rabbit
and the rabbit looked and looked and
looked
and he says
I myself
couldn't figure out what it says here
but the rabbit wrote whatever he wanted
like he was surprised
and he wanted to see what did I write
here why can't they figure out but uh
this is uh
Yeah that happens sometimes that people
that
uh
writing the Rebbe's couldn't decipher
what the Rebbe was writing. Uh we mostly
figured out
in the later years after Gimel Tammuz a
lot of times things are printed
um
Kisvei Yad
and uh the people that are from there
I'm talking to people that know what
they're doing
can't figure out I I I had a shtikel
chush in it
I remember times that our client would
ask me to help him figure out for
himself uh what the Rebbe wrote. I don't
know how but I had a shtikel chush uh
it's like the one in Adam
the chicken you do kaparos looks in the
siddur
uh
Yes this this what it is.
Okay.
Ashkoach. Ashkoach Rebbe Nachman thank
you. Not a rabbi thank you very much.
