This episode is dedicated

by sh and shindi dan.
We experienced a few technical
connection challenges during this
recording, but we worked hard to make
the final version as smooth and
enjoyable as possible. Thank you for
your understanding and enjoy the
episode.
Rabbi Kaplan, how are you today?
>> Fine. Thank you for having me here.
>> Thank you for making the time to be
here. And um
I wanted the reason why I wanted to have
a conversation with you.
I think that uh there's a number of
things we could discuss
uh that I would be interested to discuss
with you.
Um
and perhaps
uh a different time we would do that.
But uh for today's conversation,
I would like to focus specifically on
the amazing project that uh you were uh
and that is um the Tanya Tanya Hashim
that just came out. So uh let's do that.
>> Okay. I'd like to mention I'm in the
sense of editing but of the project.
>> Okay. Obviously
that
so
but I I think it says in the book I
think the the title was
there there's a title for you that had
that that said that you were the
initiate I don't know initiator the
>> chief editor of the project
>> the chief editor that's right
>> okay very good so I get before we get
into this specific Tanya and the kesh of
it. I want to backtrack a little bit to
Tanya Bakl. So I think that might be a
good way to
uh today everyone that learns Tanya
usually they are introduced it they're
being taught it or they're learning it
with some type of pir
and I'm curious when Alba printed the
Tanya there was no perushim on the Tanya
and I want to know I don't know if you
know the answer to this question but in
the in the first generation or you know
how were people learning Tanya right
when it came out? Do you have anything
to say about that?
>> Uh okay. At the time when it came out,
there was what Alterb explains init
that the Tanya was really a continuation
to private consultations which the had
with during
and the says
it's not I'm just giving out now a safer
and people should start learning a
this is a continuous conversation. We
had we're discussing you're bringing
your questions yourim. So at the time of
they looked at the not as we are
starting to learn some kind of this is
not the way wanted them to look at it.
It's a continuation of a conversation
which the had with them just the
conversation was moving from private
consultation
to the safer
and this is why explains in
that the general rule
begins with a question. The general rule
is
in other words we are talking here about
people who are discussing their issues.
I want who want help and
generally
are very general uh
they don't deal with the particulars of
the problems of and and [snorts] the
challenges which each individual has.
And this is why people are not
interested in learning. They want to
hear they want to consult with the Reb.
They want to hear it from the Reb
directly. And the Reb explains the Tanya
is different. Why is it different?
Because the Tanya is not I'm just giving
out to say the Tanya is given out to
people who I am already in touch with
who already came to me with their
issues. And right now I'm just
continuing the convers the conversation
with that. So that's that's the way that
had the Tanya in mind. We are talking
here about people who have a background
not just a background of which I
mentioned the Tanya but a background of
connection with the with the alterb and
they see the Tanya as a continuation
to that background. Now you would ask
okay that's for that generation. was for
later generations.
So really the says in that
refers not only to his generation but to
generations to come. They're all
considered mak of the alterba. But in
practical terms
says himself that those who are not able
to from the tanya itself the way it's
given to them they're not able to find
and understand the individual
instructions for themselves. So they
should ask the
in other words the comes together with
an oral
tradition through the and from
generation into generation. And indeed
that when you learn Tanya for the first
time it should always be from a teacher.
You should you shouldn't just open and
start learning because
the Tanya is accompanied by a Turkish
has to come with learning from a
teacher. Now if we are asking whether
whether the Push Matan and so on whether
they are a substitute for a teacher I am
not the one to say that probably it's
always better to start with a teacher
but maybe at le maybe maybe some
maybe some of it
maybe at least some maybe some help
there is also in learning with the
Jewish
>> so it's a it's a it's not it's not only
a safe but it's a a living docu ument.
>> Yeah. Yeah. That's that's that's really
what the market is all about,
>> right?
And I guess this leads us right into the
this Tanya that we're going to talk
about because a lot of the Tanya is
in the Tanya they're giving by theim.
And obviously if that's the way the
Tanya is supposed to be that there's an
oral tradition to the Tanya as well, it
makes perfect sense why there's so many
from the on the besides the
give. Um let's move on to the to this
Tanya
Tanya Hashim.
So I understand that the whole project
and the final product that uh came out
of the of the Tanya Shalim
um is based on a project that the Reba
himself initiated and revealed that he
was working on. So if you can please uh
elaborate what is that project that the
deba was working on? What did he say it
is? What is it exactly?
>> Okay. So if we start from that actually
the story of the we could start it from
two angles but uh you started it from
here. So uh we'll go with that.
>> I I I only ask questions to to to to
guide you but if you want to start from
a different angle.
>> Okay. No let's start with this.
>> Okay. The Reb printed the Tanya for the
first time in Trial
and then the Reb added at the end of the
Tanya and
so on and there was a Reb wrote
introduction to those
and there the Reb writes about his plan.
It's actually
this this is printed in every single
Tanya printed from till today.
There is this with the outline of the
Reb's plan and the Reb says that we are
working is working on a plan of
a complete edition of Tanya which will
include and the Reb names three things.
One is obviously references to sources
and so on.
Then a pir
a short a short commentary on the words
of the Tanya
and
a collection of
explanations interpretations
of the and
this the Reb writes about this plan.
It's printed in every single Tanya since
and
the M of the plan will never never
materialize.
Uh
but the Reb himself there was actually
the Rashimus of the Reb. The Reb himself
wrote Marquis and Nor and the Tanya.
They were printed in the series of the
rushimas
and they were meant to be probably part
of that project.
But the direct relationship between
these two projects is not completely
known. In other words, there is this
general project to give to give out
a complete addition of the Tanya and
then there is
which the Reb wrote himself which
obviously
would were to be incorporated in somehow
in that complete edition. But the exact
relationship between the two is not
known.
>> So you're saying because the Reb wrote
those much earlier than when he wrote
that he's that he's working on this
>> mostly. Yes. uh almost all probably over
90% was written earlier even though the
rabbi completed adding more and more
some of them probably even after the but
yes probably over 90% is written before
before that
anyway it's definitely that when the
writes that he is going to give out this
that he's planning this
obviously
it would have been incorporated in it
one way or another
but in actual
it didn't there was it didn't advance
and later years I think in early
the instructed
who was the head of at the time
and the Reb told him to add it
and liquid
and
again there oh there was a discussion
exactly what way to do it. Uh it ended
up being that it was printed not on the
page of the Tanya
because I forgot to mention and the said
there was writing that the plan is it
should be actually on the page of the
Tanya Tanya in the middle and everything
else surrounding it.
And the Tanya it was there was it was
printed in in a booklet. It was
just the way it is and afterward the
whole
and so on.
However, uh
it did see
some people think some people thought
that
this Tanya in other words this
cont these booklets and by
that's
really where the plan was going. In
other words, the plan was changed from a
plan of having
surrounded by Pirushim to the to this
Tanya which would be given as
the Peritan and afterward the collection
of of Pirushim.
But recently actually uh it there was a
letter from the Reb written around that
time short a short while after the
started coming out.
So there is a letter which wrote it's
printed in English.
What's interesting we did not know about
this letter when we started the project.
We find it just a couple of years ago
where the says clearly that the reason
why the original project is not yet
happening
in other words because I don't have the
time for it.
And he says that the project of
Rabbi is
in other words that's not fulfilling the
project the way it's supposed to be but
being that the project is not yet
happening. So as a beginning uh
something which is somewhat similar to
that project this was the Tanya of
Rabri. So is the is the project supposed
to be the completion of what the Reb's
project that the Reba wanted to do or
it's supposed to be something else may
maybe take it from there. So
eventually uh okay the project did not
start as a project to fulfill Reb's
plan of Shalom. This is not how the
project started. This is this is the
second angle which I was was trying to
get to.
Uh the project started and I wasn't part
of it yet with the rashimus rebas and
the
rebashimus were found afteramos
in the reb's room.
Nobody knew about it before it was found
at the time.
And
just like just like there are other uh
together with a few other uh
and other things there was also a
special booklet which had
and it came out the gave it the name
and this is how it came out and in
booklets of of
Now when it was g out it was again it
was published by visak
underb
as I mentioned
and when they edited the rashimus
uh they decided again I wasn't yet part
of it at the time they decided
just
in order to be a domain to be a little
more than just themselves
to had a collection of Perushim of a
Perushim from the Reb and the Tanya.
So at that edition of the rashimus. So
there [snorts] was the Tanya it was
surrounded by the rashimus and
additionally there was a liqu
of the Tanya collected from all
and from the Reb's letters. This was
published at the time in the early uh
no 1990s
under the misgo.
Then go some 15 years later,
there was interest in
publishing a new edition of those
and
Rabbi Brook and probably others thought
that it would make sense to expand
that liquid.
It should include not only the but also
from the other
from
and also to update with things which
came out after that and so on and that's
where that's the first time when I got
in the picture the idea was to expand
that liqu which was published with the
and to add to it other bur from the reb
which weren't included in that original
uh liquid spushi
and then once and and and I and I was
asked
uh the uh even before they actually
started to run the project they asked me
to make a a sample of a few sample
pushim
how it would look like and then
they came out with the idea since we for
adding pushim from the Reb and since we
know that the Reb had an idea of adding
Pushim from
in general why not add also from
at that time the idea wasn't to fulfill
the exact idea of the Tanya but just to
expand the liquid Pushim which was
printed in the together with other
pushim of of a certain
uh and and uh initially I was asked to
make a sample and then uh uh our book
secured funding and it started to run
this project.
What happened since is
really at that time
no one imagined
the scope
of this project.
In other if you ask someone how many of
the
are there on
now obviously if you want the entire is
a
so everything you can give out an entire
encyclopedia of
and call it a so obviously this is not
what was meant was meant only things
which are specifically written on the
tany which refer
not general bu for example if
towards the end there was a few words
about das so we are not going to put
everything which it says which says
about das as a you can't do that the
idea is just things which are direct
pushim which are which refer to theel
itself
so
I thought how how many pushim aren't
there. So, okay, it was imagined as
maybe okay, maybe a two-year project or
so.
But what we started once we started
actually working in it,
we realize that it's much much more than
that. In other words, even before I
started working,
a group of
andite
were hired just to make a in other words
to look through
all the of the and just
make a make a list list of
where there are
So uh as a preparation for the project
uh [clears throat] Rabbi Brook gathered
a group of Galai to prepare a which
means just to go through
all of the stom of the and see wherever
anything is mentioned about the he
didn't have to uh learn it but just go
through it and see wherever the me
mentioned and to prepare just the based
on the Pokemon for example Tanya Peric
Gimmel is mentioned here and here and
here and here and here and
[clears throat] so on
and once the mak was ready which was
actually we started the the project was
uh was already running at the time the
was done while I was still working on
the bureim the mak for the bur of the
rabbim was being prepared
and
with the time we started realizing that
it's a It's a really serious uh project
and
then with the time somehow the
realization came that we are what we are
really trying to do here is we are
trying to get as close as possible
to the original project
uh which spoke about in his
done it. Mhm.
>> So
>> basically around the middle of the
project maybe not the middle but
definitely after the beginning
>> the idea changed from printing the rebim
with additional borim from the Reb and
maybe from the other
>> but to trying to get as close as
possible to the Reb's plan of
which meant for example
First of all that there would be a need
to add other parts. For example, the
Reb's plan included a pir
meaning additional in addition to the
bureim of the a running commentary
on every word of the Tanya.
This was part of the original project.
We didn't start uh with this in mind.
And also
being that right now we are it's not
anymore with additional burim but the
general concept of liquid piushim and
the tanya which the reb had in mind.
So it didn't make sense anymore to have
the rashima separately and the liquid
piushim separately. the also had to be
incorporated
and and and there's a general plan
and and and also there was a reason for
that because
in some cases in the Reb is discussing
the same issues which he is also
discussing in or in later
and the conclusions are not always
exactly the same or maybe some of the or
maybe with added context and so on and
so forth. So in the in the rashimus the
rashimas are printed separately and then
there was a liquid pushim separately
and if you learn you learn each of them
separately even though sometimes
they are touching upon the same subject
and here the idea became to incorporate
everything in the same liquid fushing.
So and so so
once the idea came up okay we are trying
to get as close as possible to the
okay so what are we going to do with
push so who is going to write a push
commentary and
so again uh this is also something which
rab found
everyone knows there is the
which started as a shim which Rabbi
Weinberg gave on the radio
and which were then mugb edited
the actual pages of the shim from which
was giving his and was later printed the
which encouragement spoke about it among

Wberg would prepare the shim and then he
would um he would he would write the
shim give it to the reb and then the reb
and then the reb would give it out and
he would give the sh that
>> yeah exactly like that he would write
the sh he would write he prepared
himself he wrote his sh word by word he
wasn't like during the sh just freely
freely freely talking he wrote word by
word what he was going to say
it was typed in a typewriter
and uh he gave it into the Reb
and the Reb edited it and gave gave it
out to him before the sh in fact these
pages are readily available they are
online everyone could see the ghost and
those
now then and and
the 80s I think came out this story
and the
then also translated to English lessons
in Tanya and to Hebrew.
So it so this theim didn't get their own
from the they were but they re-edited
based on those which had the reb
and the when it came out the g the spoke
about it and the is actually printed
in the in the first volume of right in
the beginning
and here the describes the shimat
using the words Yiddish words and a
short per a short commentary
which is which is exactly the same words
which the Reb is using in his
describing his plan where writes in
Hebrew it should be a
short commentary.
So the idea was okay that's that's where
the purish has to come from. And we have
to take
and turn it into the purish
and the so this is how this uh the
second part of this project in addition
to the purushim we had the of the were
incorporated as a commentary under
>> so it's not
um it's not directly it's kitser of it's
like shortened.
>> It's not I wouldn't say it was
shortened, but it was
uh re translated and edited. In other
words,
the safer
wasn't exactly the same as the sh in
which the was that there was a different
editing, a different project, there were
something where things were added and so
on.
What we did we decided let's go we start
from the beginning we'll take the pages
as we said they are available the pages
with the go and we'll start from there
and I wouldn't say we shortened it but
we did change things based on the idea
that these are not anymore to be told
orally but they are they are the purish
and so for example for example
When you give a sh
sometimes you repeat things a couple of
times especially if it's a if it's idea
which is a new idea or idea which is not
easy to get or understand. So you repeat
it a couple of times and would write it
actually a couple of times one after the
other. So in this case yeah we omitted
some of those uh of those uh repetitive
explanations also. For example, if you
take the you would see that many times
at the end of the per there is a story
or in other places there was a story
how the story came in that's a sh given
on the radio at the end of the shabber
would conclude sometime with a story
which had to do with the issue at point
there's no need for those stories when
you are printing out a push and so yes
we did go through the entire
from its from it original pages and we
did we we re-ransated it because uh
translation of the children in Hebrew
which is available
uh didn't exactly fit the style of
of the so everything had to be
translated again
and we added it in a way which would fit
with for for the safer.
One more another point is
we mentioned the of the
now those
some of them are indeed printed in the
you will see on the bottom there are
sometimes
from the Reb and you have the lo the
words of the Reb and they are translated
to Yiddish.
So some of the are indeed incorporated
in the but some of the
are not like long
but they are corrections
and smaller
additions
to the sh and those
are generally were incorporated in the
sh
as just part of the sh and nobody knows
you wouldn't know from from reading
What are the ideas which the Reb added
this something which you only see in the
original pages. So what we did in the
when we wrote the pir is that in
addition to writing translating
and editing the actual whenever there is
a from the even if it's the smallest
it was also added separately in the
liquid.
So there is we know there is the these
wars are not just part of the sh they
are actually in addition the app of the
reb and the
also
when the safer was published we don't
know exactly
how much in other words it wasn't it
wasn't edited the safer wasn't edited by
Rabbi Weinberg himself it was given to
other edited editors to work on
[clears throat]
and it seems Especially when we look
through the pages, they weren't always
aware of the full meaning of meaning of
every ago of the
so we had to read all of those aoras
immediately from the kesh to see exactly
how they fit in. For example, sometimes
changing from one thing to another. So
we had to go through through every word
of the every word of the
>> and based on that we added both pirush
and also we edited it added added it in
the in the in the liquid firushim now
that time when we were working on that
that's when rabbi found that letter and
which the rabb clearly says that the is
still on the table
and just
we didn't have a time yet to do that and
project is only a beginning of that. So
this obviously encouraged us to try as
much as possible to get as close to to
the Reb's original plan. So this is so
indeed in we have all of the three
all of the three parts which the spoke
about in the we have the
which as we said is based on the
We have March.
Now those March are also based mainly on
the rebus
because the rebels include many
also on the and we added more where it
was necessary.
And then there is the liquidim which
which incorporates everything both of
from
and also the purim of
so this is how the came into being.
In other again we didn't plan on nobody
sat and said okay the wanted to give
let's do it. No that's not how we
started. We started in one way but then
eventually we got into into it trying as
much as possible to fulfill the rebon.
So again we can't say that this is this
is the reb which the reb actually meant.
don't know exactly but we can try we can
say that we tried as much as possible to
get as close as possible to fulfilling
the reba's plan.
So
what is the um my first thing firstly
did the rebba have in mind to according
to you what you're understanding was the
kavana to have a liquid of all of the of
like like like like there is in the
shalom or do you think the kavana was to
have like a selected
Well, I can't say that for sure because
the the as far as I remember the Russian
does not say all of the pure but I think
even when uh when the when the Reb gave
Rabbi Kitri instruction instructions
about how to prepare his
so I think the Abbott did tell him
to to not to make a collect ction but to
to put everything and indeed Raik added
everything which was available at the
time by the way since this is we're
talking about 50 years ago since then
there are things which weren't printed
yet which are printed now many more and
many more sources but I think what did
try to collect everything which existed
at at the time in print yeah so based on
that we did uh so So we can't say for
sure this is what the reba meant but
that's that's the way we did our our
work. We we're trying to get everything
which is possible from the
>> and the the liquid the liquid of the
is it um is it the lash or it's a
rewritten based on the push of the of
the
>> Okay. So here we we had uh
let's let's go back to to
the Reb said this was
in other words it's not fulfillment of
the project but at the beginning and
beginning and something which is similar
to the project and I think why is it
only in the beginning I think at least
part of it has to do with this.
In other words, you wouldn't see, it's
not very common to see someone taking
and starting learning from it.
It's used mainly for research.
Yeah, you want to know what's there. So,
you can't it's not it's not something
which you could open and learn. And one
of the reasons is because Rabbi Kri in
other words based
on uh whatever was available at the time
it seems he had he was the head of he
couldn't put his entire time in this
only soik
is indeed uh we could call it
it's like copy and paste version so to
say in other words wherever there is
something from uh from one of the he
would copy it the way it is and put it
in place. For example, if the rebab
speak about a certain which is very
common by the way speaks about a certain
part of the Tanya and different mam.
Now sometimes it's never exactly the
same word for word. Even the bure is not
always exactly the same. Sometimes it's
different burim sometimes other wording.
So he would put one next to the next to
the other. This this piece this piece
and this piece.
So you had all the sources in front of
you but you didn't have really you
couldn't make of it many. So we already
in the beginning of the project we're
discussing whether we should keep the
exactly the way it is
or with minimal editing in order to make
it more accessible more possible to open
Italians and learn from it. and decision
was made. There was discussion that it
wasn't me. was it was discussion and it
was decided the purpose of this is for
people to be able to open a safer and
learn it with
and for this we have to we have to make
it
easy to as easy to learn as possible
even in the expense of keeping the exact
lotion now and I I won't elaborate on
It's not we didn't it's not we didn't
take we didn't translate it to a
different language or even to a we
didn't take something we didn't write it
for example in modern language we didn't
it's
not we're not trying to make something
which is different from the the the
language the style
is the style of the in and
we didn't change the style or to make it
more moder or or different. But in order
to make it easier to learn, we did bring
together
from different memory for different
sources
to make it one thing. We did add a few
words here and there to make it easier
to understand. Obviously, we didn't
addim. It was we add we added and just
connections or change a little the order
anything which is meant just to make it
easier
to understand how how how the how the
page goes
whenever
we felt that we need to add a little
more than that in other words if you
read the purge the way it is
maybe you wouldn't understand and there
is we need to additional explanation. We
didn't add it inside. There was a and
and in the bottom we wrote it could mean
this and this and we added and and made
this clear that that this is from the
this is our suggestion. We didn't add
inside
any substance which is not from the but
we did addit a little bit of language to
make it more more accessible and easier
to understand. For example, let's take
the rebims. The rebims are written very
very short in code. You print it the way
it is. It's very hard to learn. So yes,
we have to add a few words to make it
easier to understand. But again, not
words of substance, but words which
makes it easier to learn and understand
what it is. So again we didn't keep the
exactly we kept the style of
but in order and these things make it
more easier to understand
and we think this is possibly one of the
reasons why
we again we don't know exactly what the
Reb's plan was but from the Reb saying
that
project was
This seems to indicate that the wanted
more than just copy and paste of pieces
but something which is a clear
which could be learned easily with the
so that's the approach which we took and
this is how is
>> okay very good so
um I want to zoom out a little bit
because you said a lot of different
things of what the Tanya incorporates
So if you open up the Tanya,
can you go through how it looks and what
each section is?
>> Okay. Uh
should they actually be there's a safe
actually? I can open the safe, but I
don't know if it's you wouldn't be able
to see much probably in the
>> You could you we could try. We'll see.
We'll see if it goes through the camera.
We can see if it goes.
You see anything here? Okay. Okay. So,
here is an example.
We start from the beginning of a peric.
That's for example, this is peric zion.
So, as you can see in the in the safer
each per is separate and has its own
show blood.
This here this is a sh of
we added here the the piece here is
actually from the
because
Rabbi Weinberg the beginning of each
perk before he started actually learning
the per inside he would give some kind
of introduction about the peric actually
he started it a little later not from
the very beginning but afterwards it
became a seda
and this printed in the sha at the
beginning of each peric. So we took this
part and we put it right in the sh
of of each peric where it was missing in
some places it was missing. So uh we
wrote our own but uh generally this is
from the introduction to peric.
Then you open the peric itself.
So here you see this is this is the tan
inside
under the tanya. Right under in the T of
the
again some of them from the from the and
some we added
and under the actually section of and
the which is where
we brought quotes from the where it was
important and so on and so that's
quotes from those
Then on the side
here it's only on this page and other
pages it goes to the other page too.
That's the purish that's from the
it's parallel to the Tanya itself. So
you could you learn the Tanya and you
can learn it with the shim around it and
the large print the words of the Tanya.
small print is at the shorim
and then in the in the bottom starting
on the bottom and continuing to the next
page
that's the liquid push they have you see
the first one has an al given and so on
and then the
sometimes in certain pim the liquid is
very long you have pages not here you
have pages let's say in per kish or here
per
You have p pages which are entirely the
liquid pushing because these are parts
where there are many pushmen
and then in the end of every perk
not in most there is a kit. What's the
kits? That's from the kitsim and of the
we know that wrote actually two versions
[snorts]
of kitsurim
in addition to and the rebba printed
them in the safer
actually gave it out to everyone I think
in
so
every so the is printed at the and uh of
so that's basically how it works. You
see the there was the introduction. The
introduction is really part of the
and inside we have the three parts the
on the bottom right under the text and
the side the and the rest of
and towards the end of
is the from where it exists
>> in the back of the um of the bay. I saw
that there's a very rich uh and
beautiful pictures of
fromb. So what what are those what are
those that are in the back of bay?
Okay, [clears throat] that's a ski this
is uh
now because
the safer as we said is taken from the
burim of all of the rabbid
to that uh now the burim of the rabim
and the are divided let's say into two
parts
there are some
burim of the rabbim which are written
specifically on
the main ones we know the
that's
wrote and and itself directly
referencing the that's
there's also from the
and for example there is and there are
which is of the
It's specifically written on the
actually from the there are multiple
memorial from the
which
the beginning of the m the purpose of
the m so to say is to explain a certain
part of
and then there are the pushim which are
just scattered all over many and
so we decided
uh that's really also based on uh Uh and
the way the Reb published the
at the end of the
Reb himself wrote a
different manuscripts
where it was published from and so on so
forth. So based on that we thought it
would make sense here too to add such a
description
of the sources which we have from the so
obviously the description can't include
all the but thoseim
which refers specifically and the a
description of where it comes from what
are the mach what are the manuscripts
and so on and so forth
so [clears throat] so that's a that's in
the back of the Tanya with a we printed
such a description of all the sources
starting from the alterb
the memorial of the which are directly
on the Tanya with a few
with copies from them. These are not
copies of because
he almost all of them didn't write
himself but some of them are of the and
from the other. So we so over there
there is so again that's a description
of all sources from the rabbim which are
directly related to Tanya including many
copies and uh my book made sure to make
the copies in the most be and and the
best quality possible
and the color and so on and so forth.
It's a very interesting ski but that
idea the idea is to have a general
description of all the sources which we
have from the and the which are which
are referred directly to to the itself
from which we took also from the there's
some copies of some of the
and so on. One of the integral
components of being aid are the andag
whether it's

Okay. Were there um when you were
working on the
either the
or the
from theb were there certain inim
the way the rabb explained
the
which sticks something. Give me if you
have any examples of something that
sticks out either that is different than
way people thought chat is or something
that you realize that was interesting to
you while you're working on it something
that uh
okay there are many many of those
I'll say something very small
which I realized in in that go of and
and
the first of it's a it's a small thing
but which I think it represents very
strongly
the reb's look so I like to repeat it
and the the inf of that is bringing
proof that
doesn't mean just someone who has more
mitzvah than a [snorts]
but means a whole complete different
thing even even has no
is obviously someone who doesn't have
and he brings the proof what the proof
because it says
that there aren't many around
this shows
that doesn't mean anyone who has more
than because there are many people that
have more mites than
so here is
where
explanation you explain it in simple
terms you know it says
that
there are only a small amount a small
number of and therefore it doesn't fit
with the criteria area of
more than because
there are many of those. So that the Reb
added here a few words. I'm trying to
remember the exact words but feel feel
in other words I want to put emphasize
that when you are talking about Eden you
have more mus
there are there is a very a
larger feel a a great great amount of
such I didn't want didn't actually I I
could look it up exactly if you wait for
a second I'll see exactly what what are
the
So we're here uh the the words the
following words
that if tadic is someone who has
only any anyone who has more measures
than a why are we saying
why why are we saying that there are
only there is only a small amount of
because many have have more mitzvah than
a
Reb added the following words
go.
In other words, you see the Reb is not
being it's not such a big hidden
it's not you're saying okay there are
more goen so many here
every single in the world so many have
more
go
so even though you could say okay that's
not bringing hidd But we did incorporate
it as a page of the Reb because that's
something which shows the Reb's look
the rebal
[clears throat]
and then the Reb puts it right in the
first Ponta
or I give another example where the Reb
is actually changing the
words along a similar line
and this is in Peric
where per is discussing the concept of
the which is the way it's in different
and the and that is saying that
meaning vast majority that's a simple
meaning vast majority
is evil.
There's only a very limited amount of
good which is mixed into into the clip.
So the [clears throat] how do you
understand generally the term
if you say
would mean majority is bad. You see, not
just majority. The biggest majority, the
vast majority is bad. There's only just
a little bit which is good. But again,
the Reb here is changing the meaning.
And again, I in a second I'll I'll find
the Reb's actual words.
So again the word
Rabbi W translated
is
it's almost completely
bad
but the Reb added a few words. Reb
adding
tail
and and and now you read it is
tail.
In other words, the Reb here is
separating the from the
and the Reb is saying
means the majority of the
is almost completely bad.
In other words, don't take as more than
not the majority as bad. Vast majority
is bad. No rub means the majority is
almost completely bad. The minority is
still good. And even the majority is
majority is only almost completely bad.
In other words,
the addition of is really reducing
how much evil is in there rather than
increasing the amount of evil. Now again
they said completely new of the words it
doesn't mean vast majority but it means
the majority is almost completely
again
this is incorporated in the printed
but it doesn't say that it's from the if
you learn the from the you would read
through it and you wouldn't realize how
the is changing here completely the
meaning of the word I don't think anyone
No one else
knew how anyone realized how to change
the meaning of the words from the vast
majority to a majority being almost
completely.
So this another example where the Reb is
actually changing the meaning of the
words and giving it a more positive
tone. It's not almost completely bad
but on the contrary even the majority
which is bad is really only almost
completely bad and not really completely
bad. So that's just a few examples from
the beginning of of the same of change
small changes which the Reb is saying
which are changing uh
how we understand his words. Uh now
there are a few places
that in other words those small changes
there are literally literally hundreds
of them that's not that's just a few
examples from the beginning but there
are some places where there is a
which is I believe at least by me a
change
the way I looked at at at I don't know
if it's Italian general at least a
certain part of the Tanya and I will
give one example for that
and this is from the beginning of Perh
and Tanya.
H is the beginning of a new section
where later introducing
the concept of
this really begins in hey uh to explain
the word of la the importance of mit
action
and in the beginning of the perk
says that
What's the purpose of this part of the
Tanya? Yeah. So, one of the one of the
again that's from the second volume.
So that rebel saying
[clears throat]
they won't be depend on since they are
not able to completely defeat their to
completely change it into into good. So
Once the came down to it seems that they
are working everything which they do is
in vain they're not able to come to to
conquer the just keep fighting and
fighting and fighting it's legal that's
in vain and uh to explain that I give
the whole concept of how how important
is the mitzvah is because mitzvah which
are done with action so they involve the
so whenever you do a mitzvah which which
involves action, you're actually
changing and and and elevating a certain
part of
but let's focus on that question. The
question why did the bonyim come down to
legal to to toil in vain?
There are when you learn it there are
obvious questions.
First of all, what do I mean? Why did he
come down to
the very beginning of
we already learned
that
Because the most you have is only a glow
only in you could actually reach you
could reach
through learning especially learning
which creates
and through in general you become one
with
so what kind of question is why did the
bonim come down to haz
What do you mean? They are gaining to
they gaining mitzvah. They are gaining
which you don't gain in higher elements.
Why are you saying it's legal? Why is it
to work in vain?
That's one question. Additionally, okay,
so you could say yes, it's true that
there is the advantage of coming down to
learn to fulfillment to be Mia.
But for this, you don't have you don't
need to be a B. You could be a Tadic is
also learning and also being Mia. So
maybe the fact that they are not sadikim
that's not the fact that they came down
to but the fact that they are rather
than that's in vain because what are
they gaining from being
no actually if you pro before
that explains
that the has a special from the
desires two types of two two flavors.
There is aim
there is a sweet flavor which is
provided by theim and then there is
things which are not naturally sweet.
It's an acquired taste so to say but
through a verd you are able to turn them
into something which is
and this is
and this this is through and the
explains in how only the benon through
his
so he is providing this type of special
madanim which desires
so we just explained what the need for
the bayonim the bayonim they are created
those
they are fulfilling the desire for their
so why are we saying here that it's
legal to work in vain
so these are obvious questions which
obviously Rabbi Weinberg also discusses
and he gives various explanations each
one of them he's answering in a
different Okay.
And
the Reb first of all he he rejects Rab's
explanations
and the Reb says
that the idea here is really hidden in
one word
that the Reb is saying here.
What's the purpose of the coming down to
and to be
in the to be enclosed to be
to in the in in the
question over here the question is not
Why are you coming down to Alaz? If
you're coming down to Alaz, there are
many, there are many advantages in Maz.
There is in there is there is a void in
no question why you came down to
why you came down to
also understood there is a you are
fulfilling. You are able to fight the
and you are causing the special
You are bringing great gilo a great
pleasure a great
the question is not why you came down to
and not even why you came down to
the question is why your
why your had to be slavish had to be
internalized
inside
why the confusion why do I need to have
such
which is mixed in together with I don't
always know what is what is if the
purpose is kafia so let we have an let
we have let let's have an outside and we
have to fight
why is this is why does have to be part
of me
that's what asking
In the name of the bon the bon is asking
I have no problem with being I have no
problem with not being
but why do I need is part of me
why is my needs to be mixed in together
with
you is give me
puties outside and I will fight
why why is that that when is involved
which makes him my much harder
it's not anymore I don't even always
know what is saying what is saying
they're all part of my personality I'm
it's all mixed in this is legal this
extra toil extra work which is caused by
the islamus
by a ban in vain by aik
We understand why is there an islamus
because through the islamus the is able
to completely overcome and turn it into
good and then turn it into that's but I
abandon which I'm not doing it
why is thisuous why is my personality
mixed in when together without being
able
why is the part of me rather than being
an outside force
And here that's this question is only
answered here. Why is part of you?
Because when is part of you, it means
that every single action which you take
is involving the when you are being
it's not just doing it. It's has to it's
using
so every you are being you are not only
reaching with your
you are also turning to a certain part
of even as a and not only inadic and
this is how you are fulfilling part of
the of the often
in other words
from based on this explanation of the
from Perh
the entire look at is different
because until
we see the as an enemy that's what is
it's an enemy we have to fight it
if we'reim we are we defeat it so so
strongly that we're either completely
driving it out or even we are turning it
into we are turning the enemy into a
friend if you are a ban
So you keep fighting your enemy. You're
hitting it and you're hitting it and
you're hitting it and you're never
getting defeated.
That's beforeh
from the is not anymore just the enemy.
It's a goal. It's a purpose
is not only object to be defeated as an
object to be used as part of your avoid
to bring to the
soilation
of the really gives us a whole new look
is from
it becomes not an enemy but part of the
goal of of our
so and that's one that's one very strong
example and there are a few more where a
a a small answer of the reb is changing
an entire look of of of a part of
>> very beautiful for sharing that
um
I have a question that I'm thinking um
the
I want to
blal this Tanya Tanya Shalim
so far has I think it's another frontier
in the ha of the Tanya and it's going
out
it's like a a new schlav in the in the
Tanya being available to the world and
everyone hears about
and it's
were born with it. Tiny Balp from when
you're a little kid. And
um what would you [clears throat] tell a
person
um is the importance? Why
why do why do
also that what is it about Tanya that
they need
uh that why is that such a central thing
that Tanya is needed for for your life?
That's a more a question for than to an
editor of
that's not I wouldn't say it's aim
[clears throat]
is
in other words the Tanya is important
for your life as I mentioned before
because this is
the way this is really this is that we
as I said before from
the Tanya is the way that is telling you
how to deal with
saying themselves that's a continuation
of your that's
and giving you and you are so maybe it
could be said that if the Tanya itself
is the
with the you are getting the of the
abment general including the Arab but
generally speaking the concept of the
concept is the Tanya is
what tells the
that's that's
a manual form you can't start without if
you want to serve the is the manual
is adding to that also through the
But generally that's the concept of
Tanya. It's that it's not that the is
not
and the ability to learn and understand
but the fact that Tanya is the the
manual of instructions of how to serve
this was before and continues after.
>> Okay.
Um, so I just want to end off that uh I
spoke to Brook
and uh I know that uh I believe that
they printed 20,000 copies and it's sold
out. You can't even buy it in any store.
If you want to order it now, you have to
pre-order because it's it's it's already
being printed second printing and if you
want to purchase a copy, you need to
pre-order it for when it comes. um after
so many years of uh working on it, how
do you feel about the fact that it was
received so well and so quickly and uh I
mean it's a lot of to sell. What do what
do you how do how do you feel about
that?
>> I can tell you this is one of the things
which uh
especially Brook was worried about it in
the beginning. Okay, such a with who is
going to buy it? A few people are going
to buy it. But you know what? I think I
remember told me I'm not doing it
I don't care how many people buy it. I
know the Reb wanted to give it. So I'm
doing I'm doing it as a as a gift for
the Reb that the Reb wanted it to exist.
So I'll do it even though only a few
people buy it. So uh I'll uh so I'll do
it just as a gift for the Reb because
the Reb wanted to have this kind of
Tanya. Okay. But it looks like uh
I'm sure it helped the fact that book
wanted to make sure that uh
was easily affordable and he was able to
uh uh secure uh funding to sell it at a
huge uh huge discount.
So uh and and the purpose was that so
that
reaches
every reaches every reaches every home
and every every house but even that I
remember in the beginning when the tan
started being sold and within a few days
5,000 sets were sold. So Rab Brookke was
very [snorts] excited. You know we sold
already 5,000 sets. I didn't think I
would say so I would sell so so many
5,000 set within a few days. Okay. But
Bashem
looks like people are going into it and
are buying it and uh it was five 5,000
within a few days but 20,000 within a
few weeks and uh I'm sure a certain
large part of the second edition is also
already sold. So that it's not only that
the Reb's idea is being fulfilled, but
the Reb's idea is being reaching
every
more every many more Yiddish. That's
definitely very exciting.
>> Okay. So uh I hope that uh this
conversation that we're having is uh
will will help the effort to get even
more people involved. And uh if you're
listening to this and you didn't
purchase it to make the pre-order
>> and uh thank you very much for your uh
part in this uh in this uh I guess is it
>> I think is the address.
>> Okay.com and thank you for your I guess
being part of this.
So thank you for the conversations
again. Thank you very much. All right.
That's
