Welcome back, Rabbi Dr. Elazar Brat. It
is an honor to be sitting with you as we
prepare to record the second episode on
Rafim Kvski's Kisharim and Contraum.
Once again, all the
episodes have been graciously dedicated
by an anonymous sponsor in memory of
Mayama have an aliyah and all the
learning that comes out and knowledge
from these lectures should be as for his
nishama. We thank the sponsor again.
Rabbi Brat has
some challenges today with his voice. So
bear with him. We just he couldn't hold
back from releasing another episode. So
we don't want to deny everybody the
opportunity to hear him. Um he's also
going to talk about a podcast that he
released on his music of a book
collector which once again we talk
about. For those who want to learn more
about Brut's work, just visit his
website alazarbr.com.
You know, he is somebody who has set up
a website with all his work and you
could follow him there. And without
further ado, Rabbi Doctor.
>> Okay. So, number one is um just
apologize. My voice has given me
problems the past few weeks. So, it's
not the recording aspects. We have to
thank Asha Tessa for being on top of
that. Cassador he's his mom is doing an
amazing job with that. So it's my fault.
So I have to respond about the voice.
That's number [clears throat] one.
Number two is that I since we're talking
about this is the second episode and so
just this week I recorded an episode not
related to so much but more about the
Rambana. It's a long episode so you
could listen maybe when you need to go
you're having difficulties falling
asleep. It's um and it can be found on
musings of a book collector which are
which is hosted on oldaf and also on if
you search the web that should be at
least one or two other places that it
is. Okay. So now back to
so basically the first episode of and
the farm I showed the difference the
different thing I tried to connect
to that similarly we find the vag and
his base med is ving to learnish and
kyki consciously subconsciously there's
some type of connection between that
so today I'm going to build go further
into this but be but before that there's
something relates to the and a piece of
inra
that will give us a little idea of some
of the greatness of his work on
of his. So Tyus in in Giten one of the I
think it's the first Tissyus in Giten
talks about the word get. So Tyus talks
about is what does the word get mean
because um is it referring specifically
to get also
is also called get in other places. So
in the in the course of the Tesa says
we have 12 lines in a
gamatri get is a gamatria of of 12. So
that's why um it has 12 lines
and that sorry
okay so that's what the reason the
connection is that there's the with the
word get which is spelled gimmel tas and
tw and the fact that we have 12 lines
has to do with it gamatria okay
[clears throat] so there's supposed to
be a vagine
about this where the sorry Okay. Well,
we'll say from someone else first and
we'll say who that is in a second.
We don't find the two letters and
so there's some type of connection
between the two and that and now so the
qu the question is when we say that does
that does that have to do with why it's
being called a get and and what really
what's h what's ultimately really
happening over here. So there's a GR
that people say over from the GR there's
different of this GR and it says FS the
G brings down or the way they say it
over the talks about this and says
get
that the letters
so says the
other explanation for the words get
you could really
You could just say
that's also this number 12
because it wants to have something going
on with the gimmel test.
There's no words anywhere in the tish
that you'll find the letters and then
afterwards a test
that the couple is getting separated
that this is the only time. So there's
something unique between the letters
gimmel test. So now
is this really an is this an um without
handling in the actual typhus what is
going on in Tyus and what Tyus really
wants. So that you could already look in
the Marsha and the [clears throat] Tyis
Yantiff and others but there's some type
of cute remes um very it's a very famous
remes
and Yudbe mean say that that there's
something behind the name get for for
for Gishin and Yudbe Isis and it has to
do with um this nuda how we could if If
you look, search the whole tire, you'll
never find the letters gimmel and then a
test. Okay, so at first glance, this is
something that someone would say this is
like a gr type type of thing. It's known
he knew the ty who he knew the ty in
such a systematic way. So he could um
instantly look and he could tell you
there's such a thing there that there's
so there's such a thing. Now what so
what became famous um um is that
says like this
similar says can ask you why
Zion
Zion sadic Zion sadic
So we so with his incredible knowledge
of says that we do find a few places
that there are other say it's not unique
to the letters um it's not unique to to
to get there's other cases of something
being such a thing. So it says the who
are it's the first of many of mean say
you're right that there are others but
um the get is the first we say so and
that's found the rem of the grow then he
says um
that there's there's other how people
say of the grow and then maybe it won't
be so problematic okay now so
even if the grow did not say it means
say that not catching the GR in any form
or another in this in this story. But
already way backd brings down in his
notes on the Tishbi which were only
printed in the 1970s but which is
predating really the GR he says Dum say
such a thing they make this connection
and it turns out on some level the piece
that I began with it was a quote from
the from the brother of the moral and
his beautiful safer. So there's some
type of Ramas and the people and and
they plug it in and they talk about it
with this with this TIS. So the the um
so the point is here we're seeing um um
this unique aspect with Rhyki dealing
with a GRA. Okay. And now so in general
the the aspect of if the grass said this
or not is there's a to to make a very
very brief point is that this has been
discussed by many people um over the
years that there's many things already
in in the lifetime already immediately
after the death of the GR they were
concerned that people are going to say
things over the from the name of the GR.
So they they wanted to try to stop it
and everything that you said over from
the name of the GRA had to be
authenticated.
Um now the problem is that over time
people didn't listen and and it became
more and more that people would say over
things in the name of the gr um and that
not necessarily really came from the gr
so at one point there they there started
coming out wholearum that had materials
and sometimes some of the materials
people said if you look very care it
can't be the gr said this there were
there was sometimes an obvious question
on something which was found in in the
safer so so the point is it became a a
big topic over the years eventually
actually um different people started to
collect all the different materials and
they were able to demonstrate that they
they they tried to figure out what is
authentic raw and what's less reliable.
One person that gets a lot of credit
this is revel and and eventually
published a work called
another person um of he also published
multiple times where they went out to
collect all the things sort of like
varts and that people say over you know
maybe in my day um a lot of times a rebi
would say it on a Friday he would tell
you over some nice there was fond
quoting from a dio and these type of so
so so the the truth is that dum that
calls
is there's a truth to it because people
used to like to say it and you wanted to
get to capture the audience so you would
say it
so to speak. So that's why um
they would use the GR's name even though
possibly the GR didn't even say it and
there might even be a m that you're
allowed to do that to say it in in the
name of Elen God so to speak. Okay.
Anyway, it turns out people do say it.
Lamarel um um um the primagadum talks
about it in the igress primagadum and
there's a work in the same generation
from Alghazi sorry yakav algazi and
kellis yak um that also says such a vart
and there are others um there are others
that say it as I said the earliest
source is really this the brother the
moral
umazi
in his copy of his he notes a few
different people that say it also and um
okay so now the question is is there any
way to make um this story that is the
bomb question to to make it not as big
as a bomb kasha so it's interesting is
like this a lot of times when people say
over these small little verts sometimes
they at a certain point in time it gets
lost in context not only in context and
the and um it sort of becomes that
there's different of how to say it and
in the ways that certain ways that it
could be said, the question won't be a
question. Now, if you say it in the way
that I was saying it, so then it might
be a problem. But it turns out in a
conversation I was having with uh
Rabivi,
there's an interesting work called
Sheamish
published way back. Um and in this this
work was published I think the first
time it was published was 1699.
Okay, one of these far fascinating
interesting stuff a mixture of kabalo
all different types of things and in the
cafer um this
he brings down that he heard from the
that one day the
he wrote a get and it was during par
while he was doing
that week he gets to the
and it says over there.
So fine he decided the TIS Yantiff
decided to look in the of Yak more
carefully and he noticed that it begins
with the letter alf and it ends with the
letter t and that's what it is
and it ends
the
um
so he found the whole alf is there in
this of except the letters giml and tess
So he said
he
that week was busy handling if he should
be writing a get. So now it changes it.
It's not the it was in par and there was
a certain sim of that theis yontiff was
using limiting it. Now
>> of course I'm saying is the says this
type of art and is not at all in the and
said it but the the point is that the
we're taking it we're sort of saying
that it could be this was the set it
over not that was writing again per se
but maybe the said this observation over
there and there was a lot of times
people um when they say over these sharp
things it get it gets lost. This was the
the um the marmakum that Avivi Rabivi
found in the course of our discussion
back and forth and then he found that
this work from this shamish he at one
point hung out in Oppenheim's library
which we've discussed in the past the
fancy library now in his library he had
the sedan of flipman and in there it
says this actual story that the brings
so okay so fine so but anyway be that as
made there's there's a lot of there's
always a discussion about it and the
main point um to this uh is showing this
uniqueness in mameish counting letters
to to letters and then going through the
whole to figure out if there are other
combinations in um w with this to to
demonstrate
in his memory or whatever you want to
call it. I I I'm trying to figure out
terms to explain what it what it comes
from, but this type of Okay. So, we'll
we'll try to mention some others um um
soon. But now I want to step back and
this connects to what we began um in the
in the previous episode and this
actually is a that Io owe um from season
2 and that's like this already in season
one in the first episode one of the
first things I mentioned was in the work
on the Rambamski
brings thousands of makers to Rambams
and I said at the time that he brings it
from an incredible wide range of
materials new materials that was being
published and crazy amount of madrashi
hal and a that were only being published
in our lifetimes and some a little
earlier than our lifetimes or at least
in his lifetime. So he's using current
data from all different places.
So first to begin there's the medish
rabba. So that so every good Jew knows
you you when you talk about medish they
you tell it's a medish. So right away
you go medish. First, um, when I began
working on these episodes with Rahan
Keski and I had no idea that it was
going to be this long and I was going to
fall into this deep deep rabbit hole and
take you Rabbi Schuade along with me
into this terrible um, dark thing, but
the end is in sight hopefully. And the
point was I came across that this of
but it was only published once in the
mir edition in 1990. Okay. So I was
trying to figure out how to get a copy
and around that time I was in this is
after one of the the first few episodes
I was found myself in liquid and I was
in Taplan and anyone who knows any swarm
collector who knows anything about tap
knows this is one of the mus of Ghaned
on this earth and I said okay let me I
go and every time I go there um I have
to time myself how much time I'm allowed
to be there because otherwise I'll be
there too long and I find on the shelf a
beautiful edition of this medish rabba
with the
we're talking about hundreds and
hundreds of hours to to pay for it to be
copied. It's very expensive and I didn't
want to do it. So I took it as one of
the many signs that at least I should be
yapping about
that I got it that I don't have a sign
for people that they should be listening
that I have to look. So anyway, going
through those already, they're talking
about hundreds and hundreds and they
were never published anywhere else. And
since they're so unique, they're not.
And not only are they not almost no one
really knows about them because it was
published once. Um, okay. But anyway, so
I'm so I'm throwing this out there as a
kadai to know, Kadai to check up. Maybe
you'll have luck in Taplan also to find
these and use them. Now the horus raim
writes over there these areas when he
wrote when he learned magisha when he
was young so it's very possible that
over the years he added to it but
they're mostly marus of of gumaras once
in a while they could be a very big and
lash at one point there's um a parish a
few pages of a on on the medish early
parish that was already published ages
ago so on that page I noticed he has
like 20 harus um but in general some
there could be pages that there's no
harus but but overall when you're
talking about gans medish rabba there
are thousands There's a good hundreds
and hundreds of ars throughout over
here. Okay,
continuing with this as of medish. I
said a million times already. Um that's
an exaggeration but many times that
there's this work called
and in there there's uses it all the
time and he and not only that at one
point an addition was published with his
so I have to so today I hope to redeem
my on that front too.
Fine. So now to begin this story, it
goes like this. Last week I mentioned
already that one of his early works on
which in my mind is very unknown. And
anytime I tell people there's a has
works on they say which works. I say but
he has other works. I say yeah he has a
safer. It's called
sounds weird. What is it? So I say it's
an incredible safer that um it's it's
worthy of being of knowing about
knowing it and and today so I'm first
we're going to explain just to drop what
is and it's false as I said many times
right wrote the sh of so he says it's
false
the doesn't explain what doesn't say me
it doesn't give give you information.
Who's the person that we're talking
about? We'll say ish. And who's the ish?
So sometimes you can figure out the
context.
Sometimes chronologically you might want
to know what's going on
which I'm about to say.
He didn't just do it for he does this
for and over the years it was updated a
bunch of times. The final edition is 92
pages. It's in in the and it could be
bought in the saferis. It's its own
section in the back. So in the
introduction
says the the where he gets from is based
on
which over there deals with releasing
information of things that the Tyra
might have wanted hidden [clears throat]
um and what look over there in the talks
about and then he says like this
he's emphasizing so it's not only he
says like this
Then it says like this. It says
and it doesn't say
how much
um soal does he says now that like this
he says to be honest a lot of times does
say this everyone knows
doesn't ever. So
I'm going to collect from my knowledge
and
I'm going do now I'm not he says clearly
I'm not out to bring every single piece
of data that he really has in his mind.
He could stop bringing 25 for each
different thing. So he brings one or two
for each thing. Sometimes it could be
and he says that's not a problem. Um
So he already answers a question which
is obvious in a lot of the cases you'll
see it could be a very big
and you could take further and go on
now. So this work is an incredible work.
Now we're recording on paras
um we're recording paris.
So I'm just going to mention briefly a
few just examples just to give you a
taste of what the idea of the says. So
he says when when did this happen?
What's the date? So says look
says so right away you learn the rash
and everyone what when where's coming
from so it says so um there's a the
major says Maria Rashi brings down from
the ram has about where is it coming
from and and not only that after you see
this piece in the
about it also begging and he says oh but
he looked What does he say?
Safer what I just mentioned that I have
to talk about to explain what that is.
Then he says, "What does say what does
it say?"
Okay, what was the aspen?
It says
he's in front of
says over here. There were four know
this again safer. So with Kitser you
could see this is a um um and perhaps in
the in a different episode we'll explore
just to drop more some other examples
because the range of his what I keep on
calling data where he's pulling this
from is remarkable but this is an idea
of a safer and a lot of times when
you're learning this is very very useful
and especially in when a lot of times
you know it's even harder you don't have
you don't have so many you have so many
so this is an amazing tool okay
now so we get the paras Sara um um in
the in the time of the cross I mentioned
he says right away when he's talking
about the Shil of where is Aram coming
from and everything so he says
fine then later on he says another thing
when he's talking about another thing
relating to Ephro and this and the and
the he says look in the
what what in the world is this work
called so you say maybe one time he
quotes it but if you look in especially
in the I think you'll see he quotes this
work
this it's work called so what's going on
over here okay so now in order to
understand this we're going to backtrack
and we're going to give a brief
introduction and say a bunch of very
briefly a bunch of different to explain
over here and to just to be fear is like
this technically what I'm about to say
could take six or seven episodes I have
I'm not doing that. I'm trying to cram
in a lot of just rashim of some of the
ideas some of the that are out there to
explain and all this and there's some
interesting about this also that's like
this you open up the this this work
so already right away on the first page
which is in which he's dealing with
parishes the first talks so he brings
down something
so it's talking about tat A dasha bri.
So he brings down a piece of gears. So
says where do I have a gear that relates
to how many um plants there were uh
over,290
and how does he know this? So Kany says
if you look in the parish of the rash on
the p of the ritzos that's published in
the safer
I'm like what
there's a little safer that was
published
way way back and this is actually
there's a whole nice long story relating
to this little tiny safer somehow it got
toki and in there the taka is a um from
beer goldberg who published a lot of
interesting stuff from manuscript and
over there takiski
it seemed to have gotten his hands. So
we're seeing some random interesting
that not too many people have and he's
how he's using it for a side thing. Then
he says like this there's another
maramakim for this of how many plants it
were says look in the medish ben where
is it found in madrashim page mev okay
you go on a few pages later
and you find
you could find other times that he
brings this um work which I which is
this interesting work of medish bans
okay so Now what's going on? What's this
medbans?
Um and what's happening? He's quoting it
from where? He's quoting it from the
medrash. Okay. So now we have to
backtrack. Up till now we've been saying
is expert med. So that of learning medus
is obvious of
danzo or however I'm batching up the
name in his work at one point writes the
kashivas of learning a you have to make
time to learn a gamarra has agada and
you don't just cut it out and we know
about the famous work yanke in yankev
and medish was actually for balabatim
um throughout the ages they used to
learn it in they weren't they did not
have dafisher They didn't have sharim
that are able to make it today. It's
mamaki watching television. Certain it's
amazing what they're able to do with AI
technology and the yada that people are
able to do to make it interesting and
entertaining. In those days, people
didn't even have the training to even
understand it. So what did they do? They
wanted to be the eat them to learn
something. They used to go they listen
to medish. Um so throughout the
generations they used to learn medish.
Now throughout the generations I'm
talking is in the printing period of
time. I don't know what if they learned
medish how they learned medish earlier
but in the times of there were different
collections of madrashian put together
by different people without going
through all of them one of the most
famous ones is way way back it's a
collection of mash
and for for centuries the way the go-to
safer if you wanted a medish was
the wrote called so the med you went to
this farm store in those days you
couldn't go buy tyrus
It was very rare what you wanted to buy
meda was also not so simple to find was
more popular and that's what it has and
that's where he parked and wrote on the
aspects and the and the aspects and he
wrote this incredible work zon which
sadly is very it's almost not known and
when when you look in standard yachis
they have a kiter of the they don't have
the they have a sorry a kiter of the z
of the not a complete version of his
work Okay, moving further there's works
later on
and these works are collections of
material
from sometimes madrashim that they had
and sometimes that they had. Okay. So in
the times of print many different people
were out there hunting for these
madrashim. Um there were a lot of lost
works and one such aid was Ramakim de
Leonzo or Lanzo. I'm batching his name.
I apologize. But anyway, one of his
goals in his incredible works was to
track down manuscripts for different
projects of his whether it was for his
work on and how to write a proper safe
with
and he wrote the classic work recently
published which I hope to publish an
article about it about the significance
of this work um in a work that I'm about
to publish and in other works of his one
of the things he was using when tracking
them um manuscripts was to track found
lost kazal and he actually published the
medagious and we even have a derelzar
that it seems he published it and it
disappeared and they only found like 100
years ago the first page of it but the
rest of it disappeared. So he was Isaac
in publishing madrashim the published
madrashim and a yid that was crazy in
this which which relates to our story is
from the base none other than benagra
um was a unique person I might have
mentioned him in the past that sometimes
there are people that they have that
their fathers are such great people so
that the the sons completely get
forgotten about or almost forgotten
about one such you
very little has been done about him um
relatively
isra he's very close with his father and
he's a very unique kid
um
and personally I have to make a
disclaimer that I have been working on
Ram for many years I hope to publish a
if I win the lottery one of the things I
hope to publish is a dream as one could
dream to publish a whole work about him
and in the course of my work about him
there's a there's a work of his that's
known which is called Rav PM
And the Rav Palm is this fascinating
work. And how does it relate to our
story? So when you open up the Rav Palm
which was published well after his uh
death, it was published almost 100 years
after he died. It says
um he's going to collect all the
different pieces that
bring down that we don't have. And when
you look through the cafer, it's
mindboggling the amount of that he had
or tracked down or saw and pieces in the
name of Kazal that he had that he that
he and he puts them in the letter of the
pes and all of a sudden you see oh
there's a lost medish like this and
there's a lost medish like that and um
and he'll collect the date the existing
say
okay there's such a thing yeah he says
where how do I know about it and he
brings a few passages then he'll say
What? Where's such a medish? So I'll
show you places that the different that
bring it down. So his incredible yed
is remarkable and his yada in piecing
together. He he now what's the
significance of knowing all this? So he
says in his in he says many times there
are pieces in kazal that you could
understand through the different
midrashim. So mean say there's more to
the story and where is the more to the
story in midrashim when you um a lot of
times you piece together a whole story
you learn a it plays out much more inad
obviously all of a sudden you learn and
then you have a medish and you have a
all of a sudden the different pieces you
learn it's a piece from a lot of times
you'll see him doing it just as an
example but many people it's remarkable
what you could do and um sets one thing
another time he says it actually plays
out in he has different examples he
gives some examples to that. And he um
and he says over the years he got this
information and he came across a piece
from the from that says if someone was
to you if was gave you that gave you and
you and he was mgal to you stuff and you
don't publish it it's a so therefore I
feel I have to publish it says anyway
and this work as I said only came out
much year many years afterwards um and
and we might touch on a little bit
shortly um some more significance about
it. Okay. Many different people were
madrashim and writing perushim under
madrashim especially from the base med
just to note the rash the radal and
others and other people also were is
medish there's many names over here and
we could discuss this at length or as I
said we're trying to keep six episodes
into this episode. Um, continuing
onwards, there were different people, I
would call them, for lack of a better
word, interesting people, and we'll
clarify what I mean shortly, that worked
on publishing midrashan that you
discover from all different manuscripts.
One such was a Yid Aaron Yelnik born in
1821, dies in 1893, and he publishes
over the course of 20 years six volumes
called Bad Madrashim. And India is
multiple madrasim, all types of
interesting madrashim about all
different types of things mostly
relating to. And this yid um um a lot of
academic literature has been spent on
him but he's one for and we'll see why
he's important for our story. Another
such yid is the great famous
was a wealthy businessman a galatian yid
who published numerous madras from he
would buy them um we have letters in a
work that I'm about to publish from um
in there there's some letters that I
have between him and the cifim who was a
book dealer we have them hundling about
different manuscripts him helping him
get them sometimes him using them
sometimes borrowing them sometimes
buying them and then publishing them and
restrain also he published a ton. Now
it's famous and this became famous from
Kafki's lifetime. We mentioned it
briefly that um at one point in time the
I like to call them the gate watchers
said how could you publish materials of
and they were upset. I suspect there was
not such good motives behind it and they
started up with this famous from called
and they said to them how could you
publish materials of this bubber all
these madrasum. Now mind you that for
well over a hundred years all but
madrashim of all types are lined with
numerous madrashim that are published by
this but they felt to be that this new
how dare you do it. Okay so um so first
they went and they asked
going through all his quotes all the
time all his mash. So he says the
already passing it. So he said what? So
first of all rather uses his but then
showed off his incredible he didn't show
off. I I'm sorry for using such language
but he basically pointed to a where he
quotes a of so everyone was out wow that
was incredible
showing that he's using a a comment of
of himself not just the medish. Okay
fine now. So at that time they answered
themselves up in a Yeshur in volume 40
publishing some monkatcha letters
showing the matcher who was known to be
a ko in contact with him and there are
numerous sources of that had plenty of
contact with him um at different points
in time I've um maybe mentioned some of
them and just one letter which again for
some people is not necessarily but he
says he writes a letter to to he says
he says
The kids are he's very happy with this
and then he goes on to give him a bunch
of and what it helped him right away. He
shows him a few different suggest what
it helped him um through the information
that he published of this um from the
Bish that was what he was referring to.
Okay. Anyway, the malam we know with
correspondence with him and there's
plenty plenty of that did have a
correspondence with him but what's
significant is he's one of the people
that are publishing the drashim from
manuscript for the first time withki
is using it another person was a granote
also a talm of from the base medish of
Berlin seminary
um
but again many didn't like him
if you look in the one of the books of
dovanovski if you about the early in in
the beginning of the century of the
1900s you'll see he has a whole article
about him and whatever without getting
into the details about him but he also
was one of these that published many
madrashim
and the la the last two people to
mention um to get to isimer
who publishes numerous numerous
madrashim and his anol goes ahead and
publishes again them again with updates
with tikunim and amongst the different
materials that he has is the is also bi
madrasha he's similar um also
collections of incredible amount of
medish he also published is materials
from and this is all not all but some
this is coming from the karagniza and
his significance and his role with the
karagniza is its own story and then the
last person for the story is the kasher
who its own who deserves his own bunch
of episodes where he was using all the
mashim of all these people and more and
puts them up and making it usable and
everyone loved the work um when they use
um to learnish to see the connection
between
making it very easy on every puk and
then Okay, they're fat gigantic volumes
but very worthwhile. So Ra Kyki is also
using Ty Schllay. So now what is the
work that Ra Ki uses? Does he have
Yelnik? Does he have um um Granite's
work Vertime's work? So it seems like
this throughout the works of Kineski he
quotes a work called Madrasha.
Okay. So this is a Yid Yehuda
Eisenstein. Okay. He lives to 102. He's
born in 1854 and dies in 1956. He comes
to America when he's pretty young and he
is beyond prolific and he publishes many
called this that of so it's a collection
of
so a collection of all the various
travels which uses in other works of his
you want to have all the took place over
the years so you don't have time to go
track them all down you buy his volume
so he um and one of the things that he
did which one of his most famous works
is called which is he collected from
multiple sources and he gives credit to
where he's getting them from. doesn't
steal and say I I found all these major
but he uses um the works of Yelnik and
the works of of Granite and um Vertime
and each medish that he publishes he has
a whole introduction of what um where
this medish is coming from what he's
using um sometimes it can be multiple
cases
now
uses this hundreds of times I would say
throughout his writings and there's a
wealth of madrasim a wide range of
madras could be found in this volume.
It's published many many times. Fine.
So just to um throw it out there this
revis this Eisenstein was an interesting
Jew and one of his things that he became
famous for was he wrote an encyclopedia
called Israel. He didn't write all the
entries. He had all types of yud and
helping him for the entries. Refuk even
wrote an entry in there. But a wide
range of people um wrote there. Now
there's a Yid Usher Asser who wrote a
doctorate about this Eisenstein. It's
called when an American Jew produced
Judah David Eisenstein and the first
Hebrew encyclopedia and he deals with
the whole story of this Eisenstein and a
fascinating read to read his um his
doctorate on the subject. He's a very
interesting um he also wrote memoirs
which deals with a lot about America and
that memoir actually got him in trouble.
Now I was told that in Ra Kfki's library
there was a copy of the also I didn't
see it but I was told by friends that
they did see it there. Now but okay I
don't know if Kineski had it but I came
across a bunch of years ago that the
famous Hungarian expert of Yfk writes
that he saw um before World War II he
learned in the yeshiva of the satireba
satarba is a nice koi. He said he one of
the things he remembers from the library
was the set of Israel that was there. He
says he thinks it was one of the lower
shelves that people shouldn't notice it
but he noticed it. Okay. So what's the
significance of this story with Israel?
Why am I bringing this up and why am I
telling this first is because like many
things this is the subject of great
controversy. And a few years ago um
already there was a yid
um who wrote about this a bunch of
different times. a yid who's a
tremendous baky his name is Yehuda liba
bend David and he has very many
interesting sarum so back in 2002 he
published a safer called sham yhuda and
in this piece he has a criticism to
various from companies for publishing
different um and they're not careful
what they publish and the information
they bring from different people so one
such cafer he says is the and some other
he says it brings quotes from
and
now he's obviously referring to is this
yalnik when I said interesting yid I
definitely could hear how certain people
might call him even I'm not passing I
have no blasted clue but that's what
he's referring to um so now his problem
was about Israel also okay he wrote this
comment and he's written about it a
bunch of times and he gave there was a a
session called bavad a bunch of years
ago and he said the same essay this
essay that he published he also said it
over there because you're making a about
various and various m for publishing
materials without being careful what
they publish. Okay. So in Ben
this also became a conversation between
professor Yakov Spiegel and David Hilman
where two articles are written about a
back and forth between the two of them
in the USA journal and the question was
is a kosher is a mut to use the Israel
from this Eisenstein
and David Hilman who legendary for being
a tremendous expert but he was also a
canoy located numerous passages in
Eisenstein's autobiography that were
very problematic showing him to be as
Again I'm using for lack of a better
word interesting.
So fine. So now between the of and the
of this author so the question is what
about now mind you I'm telling you is
that for a period of over 50 years can
ask you is using these notes.
So says the um so turns out
that the company Mishar which is based
in they had a relationship with and
they're the ones that published the maj
I mentioned all the way in the beginning
so they write that they're republishing
but they're publishing something
fascinating at the end of the volume
they're going to have notes from Kyfki
and they go ahead and publish over well
over maybe a hundred notes Kyfski page
by page he went through casuring up the
the pieces that are mut to look at
mashim and are okay. So they publish it
fine and he says
there are pieces that you got to erase
because they're against
um the way it says in the now I don't
know who wrote this because I told you
many times writes but this is I'm not
sure it says
they have to erase them. Fine. So says
this.
But if that's the case, so why are they
publishing it? When they're
republishing, they should take out all
the passages that they now know is
saying is problematic.
Um
and does it mean that the rest of the
safer is good? He's not clear. He asked
what should he do? And he said answered
him that he wanted you to be piled to
erase it. So what does he do? He went to
his own cap and he crosses out all these
pieces. That's what Liba does. Okay,
great. So now but the question becomes
when you go look at these carefully
again I'm not going to go through all
these hundreds of hours but one set of
is relating to the safer which we began
talking about
and that is this Ben work that quotes
already take a few times what's going
on. So we if you what's going on is like
this because if you look at notes says
but then says but I have a problem
it say it brings it and then a few lines
later he says the brings it. So there's
a there's a there's a struggle. So it's
like not even clear after you see these
notes what does he want you to cross
out? Does he want you to look at this
maj or not? And if you go look in time
you'll see he's using it. You look like
he's using it. So it's very unclear um
what's going on. But the but the
question is more than that. What's
really the story of this work? So again
u time is short but this work um um
Bener is not the famous Bener way way
back in the middle ages there was a work
that was known as alpha beta bans and in
this work there's all different types of
interesting passages um um time is short
so we're not going to even go into all
the different aspects but there are
different interesting things in this
safer and just to quote very very
briefly two things one of them is um a
question was asked why do kitan die at
the age of 8 days old. So he brings down
a whole thing of that is that Leelus
comes and kills them and what you have
to do is you have to have a special
Kameha
and if you don't have this Kamehaha and
it says over here in this work what the
Kameha is has to be by the now turns out
that the whole minigan
Klus has to do with this nikuda with
this story and this is a story that at a
different time perhaps we'll tell um
much more but it has to do with this
work this alphabet Ben Ser. But then but
the the what what what what got this I
guess we could put it on um famous so to
speak is as follows.
Who is this safer? So at one point in
the beginning of the safer it says
there's an incredible piece and it says
over there um
it's talking about
Ben. How was Ben conceived? And it says
it somehow comes from the daughter of Yo
And without going into all the
particulars um and um the medish this
work says that there was some zer and
through this
okay which is an incredible discussion
in can talk about um um because
technically it's not even really
possible and this has there's a lot to
do because of this people got very
nervous about the safer And already way
way back
um a famous Moscow Benze he asked
Berlin
what do you know about this thing about
and this weird story and he says like
this why did he ask him he says as
follows
And then um um Benze goes on and he says
that ta it's a very problematic piece
and a lot of ink has been spilled about
it
writes all about it and others anyway
and so this piece of leas also there's a
lot to discuss the the brings it down
but the point is this is interesting
work and what we're seeing over here is
is there is bringing through the
madrashim this work. Okay. So now we're
getting to to to the last um part of the
story for today and that is false.
So as I said brings it down
and
um basically if I wanted to sum up what
the safarasher is I would say is like
this. A lot of times when you you like
to know the backstory of something what
does that mean is not a history book. So
when you learnish even if the time
there's times that the is but we know as
we learn and you will see how the even
when it looks like it's
and they have a whole explanations what
is this but a lot of times you don't
know the end of the story what happened
light we know all about light and they
save him when does light die so you want
to know the answer you pull out you
sayasher and numerous numerous details
that one might want to know
about the backstory of the information
is found in the so obviously
is going to be using it often in Islamic
because that's the goal to tell you the
backstory.
So now the question becomes
is the hayashar reliable or not and what
do we know about it and what is raises
role with this. So first as a um
to mention a story like this. So I over
the years I've collected different
information and I have KKI's work about
to save. So last night while I was
preparing this I do what many different
um people like to do. So over the past
bunch of months I decided I'm going to
play with chatt and I want to see what
chat pt tells me about to say yes. Maybe
I'll get some more march that I could
steal and use in this year and not and
and not give it credit. So I asked
ChachiBT, "What do you know about the
Safosar?" And he gives me this beautiful
well-written answer. I was like, "Wow."
And it had three pieces of information.
Now I was not I'm not trying in this
year what I'm about to say. Also, I'm
not trying to give all the information
about it at all, but I wanted to it. So
it says the Marshall brings it down the
brings it down a bunch of times. Okay,
fine. Galdic. So I said, "Where's the So
tells me
per Zion similic." Okay. I go start
looking at my yamash. Not there. So I
say which one? It's in this addition and
it gives me it doesn't stan tell me that
it's there. It gives me a whole five
four lines. I say it's not there. You're
right. It's not there. So why did it
send it to me? Okay. Then I say alsh as
I when I start asking no no it doesn't
exist. I said okay. So where did it come
from? He goes ah a secondary source says
that the marshal and the marshal and
okay great. Who's that? Tells me to say
that. Now the say uses the say a lot. So
I was like great. So they say the Russia
says it. So he tells me yeah if you look
in the Berlin edition this and this year
fine. So the takis edition say that I
say I go look it's not there. I said
what are you talking about? It's not
there. You're right it's not there. So
what are you doing? You're giving me. So
now moral of the story was it didn't
give me one piece of accurate
information. So I asked her why are you
doing such a thing? No you have to
understand how we work and now the
reason why I'm telling you this is
because I have been testing it on
numerous numerous things. There are many
benefits to it with the quality of its
writing skills in both Hebrew, English
and translation skills. But the
information that it gives is baloney.
But this is not even one aspect was
right. Now why am I upset? Is not
because it gave me these three saying
they turned out not to be good. Is there
tons of information on the internet that
he could steal and get that chachi
should be able to find easily. So why is
it making up fake information? You say
if I ask it a trick question and there's
no information. So okay. But to save out
Yasher, you could find on Wikipedia a
good article and you can find plenty of
places without fancy things. So the
answer is something's very strange and
you have to be very aware of this
makuda. But um you heard recently spoke
about it and but he didn't play around
testing. He doesn't waste his time. I'm
telling you I waste my time. I tested it
on numerous numerous things and in the
future I'll share with some of the
different tests to see what it does now.
So now so back to the safe
and that's how we'll conclude today in
1625 a work comes out this work becomes
throughout the generations a bestseller
and I'm telling you you know you give
your your curious 12-year-old kid wants
to read this book he's going to get tons
of information he'll be able to impress
the rebi the amount of information he's
going to get lamash I said you want to
know who is the adim at does ma sale it
says the names of the people we don't
have any other source for it galdic you
want to impress Rabbi you go and rebi
who are the four people what four people
and who are the names I'll tell you the
names how do you know safeash you don't
know safeasha anyway so already all the
there's tons of the origin of the safer
now very mysterious who the person was
and the makes a whole origin story okay
fine but now I'm not coming to say if
it's reliable or not but I'm coming to
say this
uses it and I'm going explain why he
used it in a second but the
D
the a few times and others use it.
I I assume somewhere buried in the
monstrosity work he has a why he does
use it but he uses it at least increases
a bunch of times I found and many others
and and obviously it's a long story to
explain the um um why they use it and
why possibly not but since we're just
focusing on Kyfki that and that's how
we'll conclude. So basically is back in
2003 someone publishes the work of Keski
and they say like this say I'm
publishing the in it has of a few
hundred
so they haved from as you know from all
the episodes I'm very fond of quoting
the he says like this
he says like this
I don't find
Now the the to understand this
there is a brought by
and there might even be pieces in here
but okay then he says like this there's
something called
there's something called which I'll
elaborate on in a moment and that is
found and there is such a medish and I
have it from how
of from
So again is telling you about
must be that
then he says maybe he changed the so now
he says when I was young I wrote an iris
and a lot of the iris I'll show you
opposite Gamarra here and there that
there's a lot of um simple there's a lot
of um overlaps of different piece of
information that
I feel is enough of a case to make it
that you could use it. Fine.
That's what Keski says with this. Fine.
Now
there's there's a few more points that I
would like to bring out but being that
we're already going very late so I'll
bring them up in the in the introduction
of the next last episode but just to
conclude to sum up over here is like
this is using this vast majim but not
only the meda that he has that everyone
has in their but even this madrashim of
Eisenstein but he and he has millions of
to say what's good what's not but as I
said it's not so pure because there are
works that are not so simple
And is aware of this and he writes these
but then comes the
used and there were different that had
tremendous that they felt that it that
that they could use it. Now there are
people that that question it but is not
coming to say it's a that you could pass
it on it. It's it's more like it's more
like that um that this relates to the
series of season two where I dealt with
and that we'll continue with next time
to conclude this part and to move on
with and um also
>> thank you very much Rabbi Dr. Abbrat.
We're going to have to cut out that chat
GPT rant. I say cut it out not cut it
out that it shouldn't be in this
episode. Of course, if you got till
here, you've heard it already. But I
think that's a highlight that everybody
must hear, even if they don't make it
through the whole episode. But thank you
very much and looking forward to future
chat GP tests on information.
