Welcome back to another episode with
Rabbi Dr. Elazar Brat. We're back to our
originals. Mak's Hulen is starting
tomorrow. We're recording this on a
Friday. It's close to Shabas where Rabbi
Br is in. This will get out after hul
begins but towards the beginning of
hulen running through the history of how
was learned throughout the generations
and the phenomenal
volume of information that's out there
about
so without further ado is going to get
started because it's almost shabist but
I want to mention the person dedicating
this episode and Aviva Mustavski who are
dedicating this episode
Ben Mustavski is Nama and Aliyah from
all the learning and understanding in
school and that will come out that will
come out from this episode without
further ado Dr. Alzar take it away.
>> Okay. So I'm also dedicating it my
grandfather
Spitz who was a
expert in and for many years. This was a
that one of the mak that was very close
to his heart. So now there's just um as
I'm going to show it's I think it is the
most written about ma especially if you
focus on the hakic literature and we'll
outline some of it today. First the
obvious question is why is it all we've
been talking about everyone has learned
knows deep into
and we're going to go back to all of a
sudden there's a break what's going on
here the ra already in his addresses
this question sort of once you're
talking about we get to this
and also starts handling it and then he
starts analyzing it very carefully if
that's the case why does the not go in
order okay anyway so that is the first
um nuda
related to the mak. Now there's an
interesting nuda with this maken which
is relates to something. Yeah. It
basically relates like this every
certain makas. We we spoke about that
there was something going there was
someh
that went on before learning the maka
and and there was nervousness to learn
these makas. We spoke about makasan
even sometimes. So interesting is there
was also there's an old messiah messiah
in the great say for who was the best of
the so he brings down that people before
there was a tiny now one of the he says
a reason like this
because people when you learn you get
very active and you start one shows how
is on themselves And this might cause
some type of kit in the um and that's
why they they did it.
So
that was what he brings down such a
mess. Now what's interesting is that um
recently there was on the it's published
this is from Frankfurt. So there's a
so he writes that also such a thing that
brought bringing down from
um to make sure that Shamayim and there
shouldn't be mikatri and stuff like that
he brings he extends it with yamus and
baba basra okay anyway so this was a
hugger that was done by some and
interestingly enough it seems at least
some point in time when he would learn
they were like this there's testimony in
the incredible work of his
autobiographic ical account called the
safer zikurin which interestingly enough
it seems some there's been discussion if
it if it was supposed to be printed
should have been printed how it was
printed but bottom line over there it
records such a thing about fasting
before now okay but the question is what
I believe is is a more pure to reason
why why one would fast beh one before
one begins makas
and that and that's going to be as
follows the important the importance of
this maka and the relevance of this mak
is remarkable as I said earlier it's the
most written about especially if you
focus on literature there's there's no
end to the amount of works just on which
is the first bunch of blood in this ma
and even today where many people when
they get
so it's it's easier than the olden days
olden days you have to master a crazy
amount of
tra all these things so today we're many
people get do not but they do have to
master
and there's in every year there's
multiple works that come out on all
types to help one study that for the
test and of the shak etc. Now a large
part of is relating to this ma. Now the
part of the nuda of this ma is our food
the kashas everything depending what
what we eat which is an integral part of
our day.
So that's the part of what lies behind
in the importance of this ma. You have
to in order to eat you have to eat
kosher you have to eat meat or whatever
you have the old aspects of. But
furthermore as the maka goes on it it
goes into other aspects that also relate
to it. There's part of relating to and
um and after you get to the aspects of
there's then there's no there's all
these type of aspects then there's of
the animals which is what already is
there's um then gets
and many other areas come out there's
also and other that come out this so are
a very large part of our day-to-day life
and you say let's say someone makes
argument is beyond relevant etc etc but
that's one day a week this is every day
okay interestingly enough one of the
works on
so he talks about he he says one of the
reasons why he went out of his way he
gave shir he was a rabb mostly mostly a
magir there he spent a crazy amount of
time because of its relevance it has all
almost all of this he says
what I just listed out
etc etc. So he went and he spent crazy
amounts of time to learn it because this
is what every
and that's why he decided to put out his
work on the material but he didn't just
do he started with he goes he handles he
says he didn't miss a tus in that he
doesn't that he didn't write about with
and he gave sh for years also okay
anyway the point is this is the
importance behind this the relevance is
mamish incredible
now in order to become a rv one needed
to master many parts. It's not simple at
all. L Marshall um in the book which I'm
very fond of quoting written about the
Minsk God who dies in the late 18 in the
189 late 1890s. So it was written by a
person to be very close with him. So he
writes that when he became Rava Minsk
which was a huge city. So he came in and
and he realized he had to revamp all the
aspects of the kash and to deal with all
different things in the to make sure
every and he was he felt like he's sort
of again not wasting his the words not
wasting his time. He was a Yid that
didn't want to waste a second from
learning. So it was very hard for him
but was ne necessary. But the point is
it was beyond hard. In those days when
you read the history of of of becoming a
RV it's sort of like scary the amount
you forget about chabas forget about all
other um of
day on a day-to-day basis you asked
questions on on all aspects of tra that
came up lines out the door.
Not only that,
it also not only does the lines out the
door, it was it was right because of the
poverty. So they they you have to know
it on mish any r had to know know it. So
you have to know backwards and forwards
and it's not a small makas. We're going
to learn it's 141 blot. Um today we rely
on tashist organizations. Okay. Now so
just to throw out there two others and
then we'll move on. First of all, this
in olden days especially olden days even
before World War II and even after World
War II and even today he of m comes very
much na because and plays into general
how questions of sacans
now in the small towns and all over
Europe all the all the centuries and
that's why it was relevant there was
great poverty so different aspects had
to become you couldn't always write you
couldn't like email send off a picture
to Rav and ask him in a different city
to who's bigger than you to help out
because it was spoiled by then they
didn't have refrigerators and everything
Now the memoirs that we have are full of
or butchers getting upset at the RV and
the RV and they don't like the heter of
the they don't like the RV he was too
mahm this that and it caused lots of
lots of different things now over the
years there's been numer there were
numerous scandals but but not only
numerous scandals sometimes they were
based on certain shittas that different
people had there was unbelievable amount
of pulmus and they're all tied back to
this
new but in our day new technology
changes it and new and we need answers
for all these questions we need to have
an understanding of the matas. So
cautious organizations are very you need
specialists. This is something I'm very
fond of quoting and I found later on in
a of that you need specialists in
there's a concept of we finding the
times of there were certain people that
they were experts in certain areas and
that's where everyone relied on and when
you learn
and you see this very much there's
certain that in that area the the inkita
that's the same you know the guy didn't
write anything about yamas he didn't
write anything about anything else we
don't even know if he ever learned yamas
but he became he was an expert in that
area
of Nikor Traphus and some of these
people we know nothing about them and a
lot of times that was their expertise
now but today what a RV but it relates
to us today arv it's not possible for RV
to be holding in every single aspect of
traus and everything they rely on other
people that are experts and that's why
when people think oh it's all about
politics and all these types of things
it's not at all about politics it's
about a great necessity and obviously
the question how it came in evolved
exactly and all the different aspects is
a is a conversation that needs to be
dealt with and researched properly to
see how it was but it was it's a very
big necessity. I just will mention um
two more and then we'll move on is as
follows.
One is that I have a article that my RV
zezvalitz
wrote based on speeches that he gave
before I was in the shul about why one
needs a r and what's the point of a of
of a of cautious organizations and and
this type of thing. It was a six p
six-part piece where he writes very
beautifully explaining the importance
about it and all the different things.
It's especially her a lot of times it
happens that people think a lot of it's
about politics and he wrote up a very a
very beautiful way and I'm more than
happy to share anyone who wishes to have
a PDF of this article to read it how he
puts it down in English uh very
eloquently. Now that's one maraka
another thing is just to throw out there
is is as I said it caused it was a very
hot topic. So one such work that feels
with mameish every aspect of the um and
controversies in the different different
controversies in was from Yehuda
Greenwald from Columbus Ohio who's
famous for writing the work on he wrote
a book called
and he begins he says it's how much
literature is written on the topic he's
not going to attempt to do it over here
and all different things happen but the
point is you see the amount of
literature and the chuvous and
everything so he he gives you a lot of
the stories and the context of what went
on. And when you see when you're
learning the even if you're learning in
even if you're learning this in a this
is how the looks and even if you're
learning the
um still you get to see a little bit
about the issues you should be aware of
the issues of what's going on now. So
with all that it goes back to answering
my question. My question is why the to
fast answer is because you're because in
those days what we're you're it's so
you're taking on yourself something that
you want to make sure you have the
proper shaya that you're learning all
about the kash aspects. So that was part
possibly why one wanted to fast.
>> You're not going to pass it on for
someone who is going to listen to this
after start. But if you would know about
this beforehand, if we should fast on
Shabasi when he's starting to on Shabas,
>> I'm not passing that you have to fast.
I'm saying that why one might fast. Some
people some cynics might say, "Oh, when
you learn, it's not true." Whatever.
Okay. But anyway, I I don't um that
that's not for me to talk about. Anyway,
the point is there's so much happening
and interestingly enough again back to
this book on the of the Minsk he it's he
says um that the the most literature of
truous literature relates to food
topics. Now obviously some Muser person
today would say oh because we're still
rang and the gashmas but it's not true.
It's a very important part of the day
life of people. So it makes sense that
and and as I said it was a lot to do
with money also. So it makes sense that
there was so much literature written
about this over the years. now.
Okay. So, so this is just the first um
introduction
relating to what we're uh we're
embarking upon ourselves as we begin to
learn this mass. Now, one thing that
comes up in this ma and it changed over
time and now changed again back to is as
follows. When you learn this ma it
cannot be it cannot be emphasized enough
how much one needs to know the simple
mitsus of what's going on now
there are numerous sources about this
over the years I mentioned um different
times some marmakus about it I'm not
going to give all the marakimus about it
but I'm just here to talk about and the
tools out there and and before I begin
is like this back to the say for the min
so this book about the min he he he was
a yid elabim sitting and learning and
then he gets. So what does he do before
he now he he knew and everything but he
wasn't focused on so before he begins he
goes into the um expert in the expert
dian and he says I want to sit by you
for a few weeks to watch everything. So
the D's like embarrassed. What do you
mean you're a you're
what is what are you gonna I'm very
scary to sit by me? He goes no you're
expert hands on I need to see I didn't
see I never saw animals I'm a person
sitting and learning and basically he
got from this person and it's very
important that you there's there's the
when it's an intellectual debate and
then when it becomes a real reality. So
he realized now he's becoming a rough.
He's gonna have to pass me. He needs to
know what's going on. What's what? So he
went and he sat and he did and from this
he got expertise in basically what we
would call in simple English
I mean okay but the point is it's a very
ne necessary thing in general. Now for
this maka
solash there's this very very
interesting autobiography from ID
Friedman he learned in in various
yeshivas
and um he writes at one point in time he
he um he he uh he pulled off he wrote he
put together he was expert
and he took he wrote on a piece of paper
the whole he wrote a picture he made he
drew up a picture of the animals with
all with a secum of every single part of
the animal and all the shilas and what
the suckum are of the piskim in all
different in all different things like a
massive illustrated so you could see the
picture and then on the on the picture
all of all the days and he showed it to
the
and they both loved it and they gave
because of it and they said he should
print it was never printed but the point
is there's something about seeing
something it helps greatly and one other
source for now is this
that was written actually onita But the
safer itself was never published from a
referred um he published his chuva safer
in 1903 in America and he got a gama
from that darus and it seems that in his
his safera
he didn't have enough money but he got
as it seems over there he made pictures
that writes it's very important what you
did because you helped young talid be
able to see the the pictures of the
animal for and tra every a prat and it's
very helpful
And it helps
what you did and I believe very much
into this into this that you did and
we we're not to the safer but at least
we have that of seeing that is also
aware of the great importance of such a
thing for
learning the mak. So now when we go to
our so there's a belt of literature in
recent in more I'm not going to give the
exact dates of everything but one yid
was a yid who's still alive he's in his
90s
mayor and he's published numerous he's
expert in um in all aspects of animal
sciences relating to animals and he
wrote say for one of them is called
andas he wrote um volumes about how food
is made and the cases of food. He wrote
a magic on Traphus Anikur is expert in
all these areas and some of the works
are still available. Other works of his
are available on the internet Hebrew
English and very very valuable usage um
for to help one understand the it goes
through the a lot of times with the
and again this has illustrations. It
sounds like he writes at least in one of
his people are upset about the the
pictures. Okay, fine. Another Yid that
he gets incredible um
from many many of the throughout the
years
is of so he put out what's considered
like the go-to safer
the edition that just came out is the
16th edition of this safer and again
here
he describes basically that he began
learning the maka and he started
learning it very carefully the garis and
the rishim and he realized he need to
understand so he went very carefully to
see the matas of every aspect and he
wrote up about it and he drew pictures
and included pictures in this and till
today I believe there's an addition
that's available on Hebrew books till
today it's available and thousands and
thousands of lendim um um um swear by
this book so to speak and are very into
it it's very valuable there's also
videos of his even on the internet I
believe he speaks English and he helped
many of the works that came out
He's helped them very much art scroll
the Hebrew and the English he helped
them a lot and others now he has very
about it
says whatever he said over there in
particular is okay but he he's one of
you know in different we see someone
that becomes like the expert he's one of
them in understanding the mitsas but the
safer it's not only just pictures it
deals with in depth a lot of times in
understanding showing a tremendous
havana in the sugos
another yid a great in America um who
helped f helped bring to the the
understanding of maka to the masses was
raiski he's a very busy person involved
with all different things and also
rashiva pisk but many years ago he um he
used to give
mash mulin and everything and he made a
video and he taught many many different
live hands-on all different aspects of
the
and he also in general was an expert in
all different areas and the sciences to
show that understanding the mits he was
a very big believer that you need to
know the matsas and that helps greatly
in understanding the maka and the and
all the issues he had a tal of l who put
out a book kulen illuminated which is
available in English and now just came
out in Hebrew who also learned by him a
lot he also spent with gorgeous color
pictures some gory for for some people.
But the point is these works became the
this and these are the like the classic
goto you're learning and you need to
understand anything what's going on. Um
he sat by Rebelski. Reelski went through
the safer very carefully. The safer the
casulin
um the author also helped him a lot and
and then now what happens is that these
two people as I said they work with art
scroll. So art scroll shas is one of the
most used shas it's very besides for the
actual translation whether you're in
Hebrew you need it you use it in
English. The point is that it plays a
tremendous um tremendous role in helping
and they and they are based off of the
materials of these rebelski and the um
now
there's also to mention professor Zar
who's worked on a lot of these type of
topics and written lots of books and his
work on and all different types of
things also very important but gets to
the point I'm trying to bring out is
visual aid and these type of things is
very important for the ms
Okay. Now, there are videos out there
all hopes to release all different types
of things to help the lum
out there as they learn because as I
said again the understanding the mitsus
is beyond important. One cannot
illustrate it enough. Okay. Now just to
mention one more safer that just mish
had off the press. I don't know when
it's arriving to America. It just came
off the from the printer from Ramight
who he also some of he's also someone
who's very involved with the mus um on
old there was many interviews I believe
and some with so he has a book it's
called the the
anda companion and this is an excellent
work because he's taking away he's
making it simple for the regular person
you want to be able to you're not
interested in a six million footnotes
and to know every single thing but he
basically he takes you in to from the
knife, every aspect, all the all the
different questions, the the mitz, the
co the kosher animals, the knives, the
snow, how you make it to how do you
prepare the knife, everything with
beautiful pictures.
He goes to all aspects of the thing with
including all aspects of with again with
pictures. He also is a Yid who spent a
lot of time speaking to all the
different people um and oft valuable
information in in this safer with a
glossery. You know a lot of times you
learn the you want to have just quickly
what does the word even mean and quickly
you just open up these books picture and
you you can understand it um very
easily. So this is also a brand new book
that should be available in America
soon. Okay. Now especially one per over
here in this ma which is considered
extremely extremely hard. I can't speak
about it from experience is ilotus. This
is again a peric that limits is beyond
important already way back as a hush of
a work from Katan very interesting
person. Um he wrote his autobiographical
accounts also you know he learned in
yeshivas and whatever but people use it
as a matter of fact I even saw that
quotes it in his book in his in his
footnotes. Okay. Now, art scroll in this
par in this per again they give thanks
to all these different people that
helped them and also they even give
thanks to um Renaissance Lifkin who
helped them um at the time with because
in this parrot there's a lot of
different aspects of animals that you
need to understand and for his expertise
and his help. Okay. Now this leads us to
one last aspect is the sim of of the the
simum of the behemoth and which also
plays out in this ma there's a few
suggest about it. This is a beyond hot
topic until today and the the amount of
knowledge in science. It's a very hot
topic in general which is relates to the
general knowledge of and how we
and science what know about science
how much is written about it again
he has a few pages about it but it's not
the main point of at all he talks about
was a tremendous before the war kelar he
wrote a whole safer showing dealing with
the sciences of this is a topic on its
own forget about is its own right now
but even you talk about this plays out
unbelievable amount of times lashel just
in recent years the past 10 years the
the barl chickens a lever cythe how much
literature is written about it this is
already when the internet began was
already well into its thing so there was
this forums there's pages and pages and
booklets and this r and that ra and
every saying and whole are written on
this topic already and again because of
this a lot of the other chickens and
birds and everything questions and this
plays out roles and other answers tons
of literature written on it some of them
very very valuable and it plays out in
other areas of alu now the turkey and
the dagril and and endless just this
week
came out this was a pulmus in the
timeette so in this new chu this new
version of chuer again tons of material
about this pulmus lash how to figure out
the animals the messiah on the animals
just nowaday came out from
which is also plays out a role in how
he's mafarish the different animals
what's kosher and not
what's going on in this maka how
relevant it is. Okay. So now just we're
going to just spend a few minutes to go
through the how was this maka learned
which is something was it learned in
yeshivas. So the answer is it clearly
was because it was very relevant. It was
very relevant. That's first of all
before anything it's clear
they learned it. The only thing is it
sounds like at a certain point in time
stopped learning today it's not part of
yeshiva cycle and probably has to do
with because the the fear of it's too
and so they they veered away from it but
I'm not sure more obviously needs to be
discussed about it but the
we know we have the beyond important we
have um
we have um anyone needed to be a rav
anyone who need to be even even if you
want to be a ravi meaning it's always
relevant in those days even a little the
generations later
they write what there's tons of on the
whole
even going on later on in 1873 we have
the work on all of it says it was
written 1873 we know that they learned
the cyer the son of the great he wrote
he published a cafer right before world
war ii um long after he was nifas
It comes out ribbon in his beautiful
write up about to safer says that they
basically learned for five years in the
yeshiva. Obviously this gets into how
they used to learn in those in in
Hungary they didn't just learn um every
blot they it was called they also
learned sugius so anything that was
relevant they end up learning half a
karakula through it okay anyway now but
the point is that even we have in 1920s
intells that people would learn pisk
what was called late at night okay
whatever we're not here to map out every
single aspect of this maka was learned
but it's clear it was learned okay now
and what the shift was about why it got
removed so to speak now like We we've
discussed in the past the of the so we
always mention the so here finally comes
to an end he was working on it um um I
even have a letter that I'm about to
publish in a work of mine very soon
where he's talking about that he's
holding towards the end he wasn't able
to publish it and the great published it
for him um publishing it and this was
the last volume published based on the
works of Rabich okay Now moving on to
the so we have alive today put out a
massive work on of material on the we
have from
Broaddy published such a small work we
have other materials that relate to
early works we have work relating from
all these different things we have a lot
of early works relating to now that's
actual
we have the which was published many
different times s and the complete
manuscript was published by and we at
the time we quoted one time I spoke
about this um this incredible thing that
there's a a from different
of the cafer having the on and it's a
big cafer and also writes that he was
too um in he published it beforehand and
not complete but he had all different
about certain things in and he says he
thinks this should be and turns out he
was right after the man the fuller
manuscript was published. He saw that he
was right. He mentions this in the
of the safer for the edition. Now we
it's interesting is that the who I'm
always fond of quoting his list of the
different he quotes that there's a he
doesn't even mention that there's a ram
and that we know is the source of it
all. Okay? because there's a rajan
there's the there's a tiss and then
learning through
which is on the messiah we see that
there was a work from which which is
famous in
nazir and other so there's it seems and
does it exist answer is yes in an
article publishes a few pieces and
supposedly he's been working on it for
many years it's supposed to come out we
hope it will come out this is a work
from mandre and then in recent years
aans
volume
from
now besides for we we're talking about
over here all types of pulm
of kash here becomes a pulmus about
actual it's published by
and which is rabbi shash and also by
shalom this is ara and this relates to
of who has rightser beyond the scope of
this now okay so these are plenty of
that we have and also we have the mi
fine so one wants to learn and just with
the you have your work cut out for you.
But the problem is to make it more is
this
they go at it. You have materials of the
okay now then we have other works. I'm
just going to mention their names. I'm
not going to mention all the
significance and all the stories behind
it is the
who wrote but this becomes the the one
of the go-to. So to the shared dura it's
also the go-to say for dozens of gadam s
learn and gave shir over the generations
on it. There's multiple multiple works
on it. Um where write the most notably
the ram there's the mar there's the
revile endless amount in recent years
some put out 37 perian written
throughout the generations of the
reviles
and there's probably much much more.
Okay. Now
the point is that since this m was so re
relevant was learned and this is only in
the early years. You move on, you have
the which we know the greatest was one
of the greatest of all time
and he writes outd the importance of
this this is so relevant and why it's so
relevant and he basically learns it
checks up everything for moving on we
have the we have we have a called the
domestic this was a very rare work many
people did not have it most people that
had it used it because the who was
legendary for having a library had
Fal Margolus later on says that he was
somehow to get a copy for we have the
which we spoke about in other mas we
have a few pro from him on this ma we
have the first par okay now moving on we
have the rash the pagodam so not only do
we have ina we have thiser
from the primag we also have a safer on
his
that requires a lot to discuss about
him. Now there's a called the le which
knew him personally writes about him
beautifully in his about him. So that's
another early about it. And then we
mentioned already there's earlier which
we spoke about. There's a lot to talk
about him also. Fine. Moving later on
getting closer to World War II there's a
dar and everyone loves to talk about the
darl and his famousd he says all
different types of interesting things.
Okay, but the point is this is some of
the way
that are on this now just as I said this
and I spoke with Mosul there's a lot of
going ons in in the world of just as
time is short we're just going to me a
few more three four more minutes and
that's it for now and that's as follows
one is there's an interesting work
called published in the early 1700s now
this is on
but it's also a muser through He starts
we say every simmon he starts talking
about and then somehow he gets into all
all different aspects of muser and an
interesting addition of this came out
with gross a few years ago but it's only
half the but very valuable footnotes he
gave shir on it okay obviously makes
sense why he would want to publish such
a safer now moving on there's endless
literature of on different aspects of
the just we have the we have the
sparked lots of literature on that. We
have the from his the brother the moral
where they go at it already in the where
he vehemently argues on a lot of the
method of the of the and the which is
ends up being the for how the raid.
So this is we have at at head of the
great
um the rebi of the ra and the and
they're in this safer talking about it.
It was so sharp that in certain in the
earlier editions of the they took it out
because they felt it's too sharp but the
rest is there but today it's available
the which is also available and there's
numerous different onas just to just
mention five or six and then and then
we'll conclude and there's this files
there's the preades and the prey go at
it is the crazy place this this is
we have the a beyond important work f
this was the go-to safer for many people
where people just don't learn quickly.
We have the earlier work. We have a
refrain Zman's masterpiece in Trafus who
going also dealing with the two each one
of these farms sparked their own and all
different types. We have many years
later when it came out made in the world
of and there are endless different
throughout the years that were published
on these as these were very important.
every RV had to be a master in these
topics and so not only is there
literature but on all the different ina
and there's many many multiple different
stories that um need to be told and
hopefully will be told over time and
it's possible I'm I'm going to be
attempting
over the next few months as learns to
have a few different many different
short clips about the stories of all
these many different and the literature
about them and some of the pulmus in
them not necessarily long episodes a
bunch of short episodes um what the
story behind them are who these people
were because it's a fascinating ma
there's just so much out there and I
feel that in just this introduction
episode we will not be able to get to it
so in in short focus on all the
different different things about this
heavily loaded maka and I wish everyone
to be able to understand and learn this
maka uh and implement it in their
day-to-day lives. Also,
>> thank you. Incredible. Looking forward
to everything else that you're going to
share about the maka.
