A Vort From the Rebbe Parshas Ki Seitzi, Rabbi Leibel Schapiro - 5786

A word from the Rebbe on this week's parsha, parshas Kiseitze. Parshas Kiseitze says, "Kisivna bayis chodesh v'asisa ma'akeh l'gagecha." If you build a new house, make a fence to your roof. And the pasuk finishes off, "Ki yipol hanofel mimenu." Because the faller might fall. That's the literal translation. What it really means is, make a fence because someone might fall down if there's no fence. But the Meforshim ask, why does the pasuk use the term "yipol hanofel", the faller might fall? Should have said, "Ki yipol adam", you might fall. You might fall. But it says, "The faller might fall." And the Meforshim explain it. But the Rebbe explains it also a pshat based on what it says in Shulchan Aruch. In Shulchan Aruch it says that the deeper pshat, the the ruchniyus'dige pshat in this pasuk is, "Asisa ma'akeh l'gagecha", you should make a fence to your roof. The roof represents the person's ego. Person's ga'avah. Limited, make a limit to it. Because otherwise, you might fall. In other words, if a person has too much ga'avah, it'll cause a descent in his spiritual level. But the Rebbe explains it based on that Shulchan Aruch a little bit differently. That we're talking about a person who's trying to affect somebody else, trying to influence somebody else for the good. The pasuk is telling us, be careful. Make sure that your ga'avah does not get mixed in in your hashpa'ah on somebody else. Because if that person senses ga'avah that you have, that you don't mean it seriously, but you want to express your ego, he won't accept it. And then he will fall even lower. So, we're talking about a person that is trying to be influenced by somebody, but be careful with your ga'avah. But the question one might ask in that case, if that person who's listening is really serious, what does he care if I have ga'avah when I do it? That shows that he's, to begin with, not so interested. Because if he'd be really interested, the fact that I have ga'avah shouldn't affect his accepting what I'm saying if I'm saying the truth. So that shows that if he doesn't accept it, it's not because of my guyver. So the possuk says no. Even though the person is a naiful, he's a follower, he's falling already. In other words, he's a person that's not in the high madrega. He's a person that is not on the level to accept the truth just because it's true. So we would call him a naiful, he's already a follower, he's already somebody who's not so high, he's falling already. Nevertheless, you don't add to it. That you make sure that your guyver doesn't interfere in your being much be on that person. Because if your guyver effects it is felt there, it'll cause him to turn away. I he's a naiful anyway. You don't have to add to it. So make sure that when you help somebody, try to influence somebody for the good, there should be no guyver involved. Because if there is, he might not accept it and you will even add to his falling in his ruchanius zikiyus level.
