This case was much more
troubling
than just dealing with the abuse itself,
which was horrific in every which way.
But what made it even more complex, more
difficult, and even worse in some ways
is the communal failure.
The collective communal failure.
Floating the Torah.
Floating rabbinic, misquoting
rabbinic, misquoting Gemara
in an effort to silence people.
People speak about the concept of lashon
hara,
which we very strongly believe in.
People have asked me,
"Is it true that anyone that becomes not
frum did so because they were abused or
they had trauma or something else?"
And my answer is no, that's absolutely
not true.
But I am amazed and shocked when
somebody goes through trauma and remains
faithful to the religion and remains
frum. Why?
Because the number one tool used to
silence victims is the Torah.
Using lashon hara, using mesirah, using
rechilus, using pidyon shvuyim, using
every single type of excuse Torah-based.
And I look at them and say, "If the
Torah If this is the Torah, then this is
not what I can believe in." So those
that remain frum and can see through
the falsehoods
being painted up in a Torah fashion
get an even higher level of respect.
Not because they stayed frum and others
didn't. We don't judge anybody.
But because they saw through the
falsehoods
and were still able to continue doing
what they do.
Something not to be taken for granted.
Specifically in this case, something
that made it even more difficult
was the fact
that the Deputy Minister of Health of
Israel
called {quote} unquote Rabbi Yaakov
Litzman
abused his power.
ABUSED HIS POWER BY GETTING
medical professionals to falsify RECORDS
AND DOCUMENTS ALL UNDER THE GUISE OF
PIDYON SHVUYIM.
Not thinking about lo saam al dam
re'aho.
Not thinking about vi'ahavta l'rei'akha
kamokha.
Not thinking about the din rodef of
somebody who not only fled what while
being
well, they were trying to create an
arrest.
