thank you Robie for being our kazak person and our Torah anytime person um it's really an honor to be here and to be live and in person with everybody so the kav yashar has a story he writes I heard this from and he says the following there was a man and he lived in a town and he was extremely wealthy but he was an extreme Miser very very stingy so much so he was from but he wouldn't go to shul because he knew that in sh they were going to come around collecting for stua and he didn't even want anybody to ask him to share all right so he had one Mitzvah though that that Mitzvah that was his Mitzvah he was a Mel and he did anyone who asked him to do a Brisa he would travel however far it was necessary and he never took any money whether the person was rich or poor that was like his thing so very very stingy with his wealth but he had this like thing Mila I'm a mohel I'll go anywhere anyhow one day he gets a knock at the door and it's a gentleman who says my wife had a baby and we need a mohel okay where you located somewhere 40 mil like 40 miles very very far away now what he didn't know was that this human being who was knocking at his door was not really a human being but was actually a shade a demon disguised as a human being but our um character did did not know that at the time and so he says sure no problem I'm I will come wherever it is that you need a mohel and they're traveling in a fancy carriage and it's very nice looking carriage and they finally get to their destination and they're at their destination and he sees that there's a lot of really beautiful houses and he sees that this is the house of the host gorgeous mansion and he walks in and everything is so he sees wow you know this guy must be very very wealthy and he comes in to finally see the mother of the new baby and he's examining the new baby it's going to be his bris in the next morning and he's alone with the mother for a minute and the mother says to him listen I have to tell you something I am from the human race I was kidnapped as a little girl but the person who's telling you that is he's my husband he's really a demon and this is a city of demons that are disguised as human beings okay this is kava yashar this is a city that's disguised as human beings um she says it's too late for me I was already kidnapped as a little girl but you have a chance to save yourself do not eat or drink a thing and do not accept any gifts from him and then you'll be okay and then the husband walks in and quickly they pretend like they're doing the baby business as usual meanwhile our Miser friend over here is trembling but okay he's got to do what he's got to do this is the Mitzvah Brit and he that night is the the night before the the night before the bris we stay up and we say the different kinds of Torah for the baby to keep the baby safe and everybody is eating there's lots of food and the mohel keeps declining the food from his host and he says no I'm just very tired from the trip when I'm tired I I can't eat it's just too heavy for me okay he evades eating that night comes the next morning time for the bris he does the bris everybody is so happy and comes time for the suda and the host has this lavish suda and many many fancy people have come and he says you know our esteemed Mel please come sit at the head wash you want to enjoy and partake in the suda and the mo says actually I'm in a tan I'm in a fast because um I had a bad dream last night and you know you have to fast after a bad dream so I'm going to sit with you but I I can't eat anything cuz I've taken upon myself a personal fast so the host says oh my gosh but you're s you've traveled from so far you know what and he tells all of his guests we're postponing the Su of the bris until after sh until evening tonight in honor of our host so what's the host was in honor of our mohal so what's the moh going to do okay comes the evening and he says okay everybody is coming in everybody is washing and the host says so new aren't you going to break your fast and and partake in the sud Mitzvah and he says listen I have to tell you I don't know what's wrong with me but my my limbs are very weak and I don't feel right and and he makes up excuses and he he's clearly evading eating everybody meanwhile is enjoying themselves and he's thinking like wait really all these people are demons but he's being very careful not to eat or drink anything and he's hoping to be able to leave this place unscathed and finally the host calls him over to a room and he's thinking okay this is the end he's going to take my soul I don't know what he wants for me the host says come come come I I want to show you something and he opens up a door and there's beautiful gold and silver vessels and different kinds of things and he says please you've you've come so far you've done so much just choose something to take home as a Keepsake and the mohal says no no no no you don't understand I'm a very wealthy man I have tons of gold and silver at home but I don't need anything from you and he says but maybe a bracelet or something look at all of these things and again the mohel no no no no no no no no no fine the host says okay I'd like to show you another room okay goes into another room and on this room he sees a bunch of nails on the wall and hanging on each nail is a keychain with a bunch of keys so he's looking at this very odd room with all of these different keychains and all of a sudden he sees a keychain and he's like those keys are my keys to all my store storage houses to all my safes to every why is my key ring there and the host looks at him and says You seem like very taken a back by this room I showed you a big room of gold and silver you weren't phased but I'm showing you a room with like little metal keys and you're you're very curious and you're looking and the mohal says I mean this key ring that and he points it these look like all of my keys so the host turns to him and says well the host doesn't know that his wife had told him the night before he says I see that you're clearly a man that's protected by God so I'm going to tell you my secret I am actually not a person I am a demon and I am the head demon in charge of all of the misers all of those people that you saw those all all of those people work for me and we're in charge of all of the misers that whatever money that they have that the money that they have that they shouldn't be able to use it for enjoyment since they were stingy since they were miserly there's now we we're all appointed to make sure that whatever money that they do have they'll never be able to enjoy from it and in fact we see that's true that a person that's stingy that's tight with their money they're not only just tight with their money for Sedaka purposes they're tight with their money even when it comes to themselves one person even said you know by us misers we don't enjoy neither in this world nor even in the next World cuz at least in at least in this world the people who are large enoy enjoy we don't enjoy in this world cuz if I ever spend money on something it hurts to go down and we don't enjoy in the next World cuz we don't give Saka so says this head demon we are in charge to make sure that anyone who's a miser should not get any Hanah should not get any benefit from their wealth but since you are clearly a man that had that is connected to God because of his Mitzvah OFA you are now released from our um imprisonment and he hands him the keys and he gives him this fancy wagon to go home with and this man comes back to his town and a total woo 180 he's now donating new wings of synagogues and helping with poor and helping with the orphans and helping with everything and his money now he's able to spend it freely and he's able to give it out and he's able to make a difference with what he has and here says the kav yashar is the god should bless you should give you br which over there says is of wealth you should be blessed with wealth and you should be protected protected from what protected from the demons that want to take hold of anybody that has wealth and that is stingy with their wealth not to allow them to enjoy so we have a concept that Hashem gives us braa in this world but the braa that we have requires sh requires protection because if it's not protected we might fall under holding that braa for ourselves and when we hold it for ourselves then we fall under the Dominion of the Shad of the demons that will say not only others are not going to enjoy from your blessing but the blessing that you have will turn out to even be a curse for the person that holds on to their blessing and that is the first P that we see in this week's par of says open your eyes because I'm giving you braa and CLA I'm giving you blessing and curse and then the PK goes on to clarify if you listen to Hashem it's blessing if you don't listen to Hashem Kal it's curse but the light I'm hit at a red light and life is difficult I have to understand that there's something about my Outlook there's something about the way that I'm seeing this that needs to shift that the very same way of looking at something is different and so actually um I think they called this Shor bring let's bring the G something or let's bring mashia or something so I was thinking about that title and it made me a little bit actually uncomfortable and I'll explain to you why because um I had I had once somebody who was going through something very very very tragic and very difficult and she made a whole thing of we're going to storm sh and we're not going to let Hashem take this precious n from us and we're we're not going to let Hashem not listen to our and we're not and and it was coming from the heart of somebody who was in so much pain but it was we're going to make sure that Hashem listens to us we're going to we're going to make sure that we're going to have it and I I I I I I I I tightened up when I heard the way that that she was in her innocence kind of of pushing and I because I think that sometimes we get we our outlook on how we understand the wayes who wants us with the positive thinking and the we can do everything in this world verses there's a certain humility that we have to have when I think that I'm going to be able to change this for good because you know what I'm me said if I change my Outlook the CLA is going to turn into a so I'm going to figure out how to change my Outlook and this clo it's going to turn into a when I push myself into a hole then I block a certain amount of light from coming in and I heard once from RAB Daniel Catz that the greatest blockage to having a spiritual experience is does anybody know the answer wanting to have a spiritual experience what don't you need to want something to do it yes but there's something something with the ego of a human being that when I say you know what even it's a spiritual goal I want to do it and I'm going to do it that I get a certain um push towards it and there's an ego that gets involved and it blocks it so then what am I supposed to do I shouldn't want to be spiritual I shouldn't want to now have a healthy Outlook and a positive spin on life no that's not the what I'm saying I have to be curious I have to be playful and I have to be flexible about it Hashem this is very difficult it definitely seems like a CLA perhaps maybe I could look at it this way there's a difference between saying perhaps maybe I could look at it this way maybe this is going the right angle to look at it versus no I have to look at it in a positive light everybody we have to be happy look at it in a positive light we have to be posit there is a certain one we say we have to be I'm going to be that we end up blocking it so how how do we take this and go through our um waves of life with a gentle openness to accepting the way Hashem wants and allowing it to flow in the way Hashem wants but being a catalyst in getting us to where we want to go when we come into the El mindset we are already a few steps ahead head and over here init we are at a disadvantage because we're still in summertime even though L is already M shabas yeah we're still in summertime and there isn't yet an AA a feeling of el contrary to let say in over there El's mon starts it's it's El like everybody's to sell his rolls of fabric and he was in a rush to leave the port quickly he wanted to quickly unload the merchandise cuz he needed an empty ship to bring back what he needed to and so he's selling his rolls of fabric at closeout prices and he tells everybody you know what the smallest roll of fabric over here is 60 M but I'm giving every for all of it a certain amount of money and you know the people are coming in they're feeling the fabric he's in a rush he wants to get he's giving below price on this merchandise he just needs to get rid of it and they're saying well I mean how do we know maybe measure this one for me he says I don't have time to roll them all out and measure them but they're saying but then how do we know he says you know what this is the thinnest roll of fabric that I have over here I'll I'll unroll this one I'll measure it out for you and you'll see he measures it out the thinnest one is 60 M so if the thinnest one is 60 M of course anything that's thicker is more than that and so therefore he says see the smallest one that I have so everything else is greater and everybody says oh so now we see we understand similar toes Hashem says you have to understand understand to have the right mindset you have to realize that mitzvot are not a they're not a burden of like okay LOL is coming now I have to take upon something on myself now I have to this now I have to that now what should I do I have to cro tail this I have to you have to understand Hashem says that mitzvot are the greatest merchandise you can pick up it's something you should want and when LOL comes you're getting it at a wholesale price but what do you mean mitw are the greatest thing I was at summer vacation now you know start and this and now it's and starts and the are going and this is happening and now I don't know this would have been maybe we should have done it last week but now it's LOL and now what do you mean mitz what are the greatest thing we have to be Mish for mitv we have to it it kind of curtails us sometimes so Hashem says listen I'll give you I I'll roll out an example perhaps the Mitzvah that we tend to or that we um are vulnerable to lose the most in is the Mitzvah right we're actually literally taking money out of our pockets and giving it and as Jews it's so beautiful because we we we forget sometimes how much sadaka even when it's hard for us to sometimes give but compared to the world we forget sometimes how incredible the Jews are at giving sadaka we you've heard it right we start our numbers at $18 the G it's like you know will you donate 99 cense we you this right $18 I know people who on their tax returns will not write really the extent to which Sedaka they're giving because they're like that's going to cause a red flag because who gives that much money when your income is like that because as Y sadaka is a big priority to us but so we're we're used to understanding okay if you give s but if you think about it when I when I'm giving money I I don't have money in my pocket I'm losing Hashem says I'm going to show you the Mitzvah that looks like your immediate results are lost I'm going to show you how much that Mitzvah that seems like there's so much loss how much that Mitzvah actually benefits you and this para goes on to tell us that the Mitzvah that one would think is the biggest loss look at how much it benefits you it's going to bring braa into your home if a person is sick God forbid you give Saka and and that can cancel gazer and if a person gives a tenth of Saka they're going to be able they're going to get money back and if they give a fifth of their money to Saka they're going to become very very wealthy and Hashem tells us you can even test me on this and and he goes on and on to tell us when you give you're really going to get back much more and if it's with the physical things that I'm going to give that I can measure right now but but money just came out how much more so Hesh says when you give in the Comforts of your life okay somebody you know wants uh me to to drive them somewhere I I'll drive them okay maybe you know that outfit that I love I'll put it away fores I'm not losing I'm benefiting maybe you know uh my mother calls it really not a great time and I have to pick up the phone I'm not losing time when I'm involved in a Mitzvah I never lose when a person is involved in keeping the Torah they never lose and there are tons of stories about this my husband just told me story about uh a man who his nephew was very wealthy he himself was a travel agent and he had a very hot shot nephew who was always traveling for business and his nephew did AED by using his uncle as the travel agent always to book his flights and um it worked out until the nephew calls up his uncle and says listen I need to get to New York by the evening tonight and you got to get me on a flight no matter what so Uncle quickly goes in and tries to say and there's one flight I don't know where he was from there's one flight on Swiss Air and the flight leaves at 1:55 he calls up his nephew's secretary his nephew is in a meeting and he says well he's got to call you back and he says but I'm going into my daf yomi sh in 10 minutes I need to know if I should book him this flight or not she says well I mean whenever he's able to call you he'll call you lo and behold nephew gets out of the meeting Uncle is already in his D phone is off and nephew calls a million times you got to get me on this light you got to get me on this light after the dfom shear Uncle opens up his phone and sees a bunch of missed calls ended with a very angry text my dear Uncle I still love you our family relationship is still intact but as of today our business relationship has ended I needed to get somewhere you needed to help me do that I don't know where you were you need to be available for me lo and behold um uncle is very upset you know I what happened that flight ended up crashing it was a famous Swiss Air crash and I don't know he told me the story and that flight ended up crashing and nephew uh calls uncle and apologizes and of course the relationship remains and that dafi was Kim we never lose from doing a Mitzvah and even if it seems like we lost because I did this and now because of this just wait there's a story of a man who loses a coin and as he goes out to to search for his coin he goes back to all the places that he was and he can't find this gold coin that he lost but on his way home from searching he finds what two gold coins so now this gentleman can think about it in one of two ways either he can think to himself ah if I wouldn't have lost the first coin I would have had three coins now or he could realize that this was a kades baru's way to give him an extra gold coin you know know I I when when he was telling this story to us I said everyone was like wow he missed the plane and then and and the plane crashed I said and you know sometimes the greatest stories are and he ran and he you know he was wrapping up his filling and he didn't and he came to his plane and he missed his plane cuz he was doing a Mitzvah and his plane took off on time and his plane landed on time and he missed that big business deal the end there's just as much hashak prus in that we just don't see it right away we have to understand that anytime we choose a Mitzvah we never ever lose and that's why Hashem says pay attention to this Saka Mitzvah that I've given you this Saka Mitzvah means lose take out give to people but I'm telling you you're not going to lose and you're going to see it in this world you're going to see that you're never going to lose with sadaka how much more so if I don't compromise my if I don't compromise my if I don't comp compromise my uh learning Torah that I have to do if I don't compromise my kasas if I don't compromise the places that I choose to go to and be at we won't lose so Hashem tells us notice how many opportunities I'm giving you because comes El Hashem says I'm not going to send you now into an anxiety frenzy of I have to be have to do chuva I have to be so great I have to do this what should I do next no no no Hashem says I'm giving you opportunity unities if you're smart if your eyes are open you'll pick them up they're for your benefit a secret to be when we get to hasem the light on Rashana make yourself needed to as many people as possible what do I mean you see if I have to stand up in front of din maybe my deeds will be good maybe they won't maybe he'll say yes you deserve another year maybe kala anybody who asks you for a favor that they are doing you the biggest favor because now all of a sudden you become necessary for their life also so when we tie ourselves whether it means finding somewhere to volunteer making phone calls to people who we don't usually reach out to but maybe they'd appreciate it or even if I'm already spread at my maximum becoming present in what I'm already doing becoming non-replaceable in the relationships that I already have making more of an effort to have people to help people to be out there for Kel then a Kadesh who says your din fold becomes much much larger the biggest braa that a person that a human being can have is a feeling of fulfillment is a feeling of I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing Hara the proof is whenever a person is involved in something that they they feel passionately about even if it's physically exerting or emotionally exerting but they're they're passionate about it they believe this is something that I need to be doing they could go with without so much sleep without so much eating and not only do they not become depleted but they're energized by it because they feel I'm doing something right I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing so says hes you want the greatest BR look around at your life how do you know what your sense of fulfillment is what you're supposed to be doing so Sayes I gave each one of you a life with certain tools in your life each one of us has different talents different flaws same thing like a person who is uh you know running away from a cop and the cop is like about to catch him and send him into a jail for millions of years and the guy's like I need to find somewhere safe to go and he runs into a house that construction is being done on and all of a sudden he sees that there's lots of people in the house but some guy comes over to him and says oh thank God you're here yeah you get to work now and he's like okay here here's I I I what am I supposed to do I don't what do you thank God what am I supposed to do so what's he going he's not going to say like oh well what do you need me to do cuz it's going to blow his cover what's he going to do he's going to go to the room that the guy told him to go he's going to look around if he sees that there's paint brushes and paint he was hired to paint the walls if he sees that it's he's being sent to a bathroom and there's a plumber he's got to do plumbing stuff you look around at your tools and then you figure out what your job is so each of us has to look around our families our jobs our bodies whatever we have in our lives our talents our flaws this is the job that I have how can I now do what I need to do says naalum one of the best ways to know what we were put in this world to fix is to try to see where does your yatar Hara attack you the most wherever you see itahara comes up again again again you know like you know somebody who just by by Nature they're not really into like all of the gossip and every year they start working on well I'm not I'm not going to do lenara meanwhile they have a temper like from here till tomorrow lanara is not your thing it's a very good thing everybody should work on lanara but you've got a temper you have to work on something different where your Yara attacks you it's easy to become very good in the things that we're naturally good at but we're generally here in this world to fix that which are yarara is constantly barraging us on so find where that is R of chober was a great RV and he used to go around from town to town and find uh check the knives of the sh in that town just to make sure that the sh was a kosher that the meat that they were that the people of that town were eating was going to be kosher meat and he would obviously arrive unannounced in order to make sure that the had the correct knife um and one time he arrives in a certain town and he's at Min and the notices him and the thinks to himself you know what I have enough time to run home and sharpen my knife and be back before he'll um come and check ask to check my knife and he's thinking in his mind should I run back should I not run back I mean he came now what should I do should I run back should I not run back and he then thinks to himself he says if somebody would come to me right now and ask me to she an animal for them would I use my knife as it is and he says and be honest with myself I would and then he says to himself if my knife is good enough for Hashem it's good enough for and he continues to DAV and he goes and of course comes over to him and says you know uh and he sees the r coming to him and he's getting ready to show him his knife and R looks in his eyes and says if your knife is good enough for Hashem I don't need to inspect it comes roses and the month of El I mean it's interesting we're we're we're unique the Jewish people that we take a whole month Hashem says to prepare for uh rashishana for these two days and actually I just learned that Bal madrea that people of a very high madrea they don't wait till El starts they actually start preparing now in the last days of a to prepare themselves to be prepared for El okay my drink yes um to be prepared for El what is the preparation of el so is it like okay calling up people and making peace yes it's all of those things but remember that there's also an assara that that's where we like kind of up our Mitzvah observance so if that's thear T so what's the L so I think the L is more of a time for us to notice how we're doing our mitzvot to notice our thoughts about how we think about life how we think about the people in our life and how we think about Hashem am I from because this is the community that I live in and I would be embarrassed to go out or to do that with the people would see me or am I from because that's what Hashem wants me to be do I do what I do because I mean that's what I do or do I do what I do because I'm using it as a tool to get close to Hashem ladies news flash the purpose of this world is not Mitzvah Mitzvah help us attain the purpose of this world the purpose of this world is elim is to be close to Hashem and Hashem tells us the best most effective efficient fastest way to experience that closeness is through Mitzvah so Mitzvah are not AAS in and of themselves and so many times we get caught up in the Mitzvah and we and we think just about the Mitzvah that we forget that this Mitzvah isav it's a way to create a connection between me and my Hashem so the month of ell is to look at the Mitzvah that I'm doing and saying do I feel closer to Hashem cuz I just made that BR do I feel closer to Hashem because I chose to wear this instead of that do I feel closer to Hashem because I had that conversation that I didn't really feel like having am I is Hashem involved is Hashem with my Mitzvah observance and am I doing Mitzvah in a way that propels me to the next level so there's a story of R morai levaton and he was a balabala big um deeply involved with torat hanistar and it was said that every suus I mean if we're talking about l rashishana guess we could talk about sukus that every sukus when he had the US in you know we all invite the US in I don't know about your suas but I haven't personally seen them actually come into my Suka but this Le Rabbi Levitan he would actually say K and wait foru to come and so it and it happened every year he would have the come into His su he actually physically saw them and so it comes suus that year he makes K and he's waiting for AFU and he's waiting and he's waiting and as I was cutting the branch I slipped and I fell and I hurt my hand but Rabbi I I I covered and everything and and the rest of the Suka I built it's kosher look I I it was very painful for me but I built it look Rabbi the Suka is kosher right my Suka is kosher and the rabbi comes in and of course the Suka is kosher and he tells him did you have any guests come to your Suka tonight so he says yes somebody came and he asked us if he could stay by us to for the meal and we said to him of course we were so excited to have a guest in our sua our first year that we have a Suka and he came and he was by us for kidish and he we started to serve the meal and then all of a sudden my wife and and I were looking another way and he just he was gone and the Su door didn't open and we just really we really didn't know what was going on but I mean we didn't know what to do did did we do something wrong and the rabbi looks at him and says it was Abraham ainu he was late to my Suka because he was by you because your Suka was so cherished in the eyes of Hashem you know sometimes when we try to do a Mitzvah we're doing something good and then we get a parking ticket or something like we're we're
