thank you all for coming it's a great
thrill to be here - hurry Union I want
them to sing a number of more than
familiar faces back from the old days
and some with some new friends you're
helping me transition from being a
spiritual consumer this wonderful
wonderful country of ours to perhaps
beginning to be a spiritual producer as
well so thank you for the opportunity
many of you don't know who I am
although some of you probably see a
faint length of recognition I was
opposed to boy for America's Most Wanted
for a couple of decades and has
something to do with my running here
actually it's it's not Interpol who's
after me but some other people we're not
going to go into that right now
I have worked with the Simon Wiesenthal
Center and associate institutions for
four decades I came to Los Angeles
straight out of coal oil so we'll give a
sheared in an academic institution
Rigler so I first tell me then there
eventually I got shifted to the Simon
Wiesenthal side Simon Wiesenthal Center
is the largest huge membership group in
North America with over 400,000 paying
families a stressed paying that accounts
a lot in the Jewish world and we worked
for four decades as as influence
peddlers originally we were into
Holocaust more realization and
protecting survivors but that that
shifted that shifted decades
leading human rights organization with
standing in the European Parliament and
the South American Parliament and
capitals around the world in state
government local government
international government NGOs United
Nations I say it's not to brag so much
as to show the complexity of life today
if you're trying to do things for the
Jewish people used to be in the old days
you know you live in New York so yeah if
you own three congressmen and a half a
senator and you're okay and then you
have his name in the state assembly you
got to get these wrapped up and if you
could throw in one one Cardinal you a
friendly with that's it you and all of
my boy you've got it it's that's no
longer the case today to be of influence
in the in a very rapidly changing the
world you have to have standing in all
kinds of different places which is
really part of what we're going to talk
about if you come and start getting
nervous well who does all these things
and where do we what do we find the
people to help us well then you're ahead
of the game because you're figuring out
but some of this is going to lead to my
particular role at the Wiesenthal Center
is really twofold I do a good deal of
writing together with my my colleague
really my boss by Abraham Cooper the
associate dean of the of the center and
the charge of interfaith affairs we try
to call it really multi-faith affairs
and make the differentiation we're not
into the old ecumenical stuff of well
you believe in one god we believe in
three guys why don't we split the
difference and we'll all sing song you
know
kumbaya together that's that's not the
kind of stuff that we do we try to build
on the power of faith to get things done
when they should be done for the Jewish
people and if you return if you can
figure out that it doesn't work unless
you're ready to reciprocate and we stand
ready to reciprocate
in some pretty strange places I will
admit that it's a great job for somebody
who's passive-aggressive because half of
my job is to find friends for the Jewish
people and half of my job is to find the
bad guys and make life miserable for
them and we do a pretty good job at that
too it more for that in the future so
did you hear the one about the
anti-semite back in Eastern Europe
stupid question we need everybody well
then this is one guy in this little town
who was just known to be over the top
the worst anti-semite around and one day
he kind of surprised his family he came
back home from the doctor's visit and he
announced that the doctor said that he
had a better year to live and he's going
to mend his ways he wants to convert to
Judaism all the rabbi so they try to get
the rabbi to come down that's a good
thought there's no fool ever walk out of
a guy's house again but they prevail
upon him they insist
okay guys turning over in the blink is a
man how do you say no the rabbi comes he
listens to the guy he seems to be
sincere he works with him for about 11
months comes a couple of times a week
learns with him till he's finally ready
to take the plunge Hank's him to the
mikveh comes back and in a few days
later he falls too into his deathbed
he's a dying man surrounded by his
family he looks up at the heavens with a
look of utter serenity on his face
smiling and his last words as his soul
departs his body thank God
one less Jew in the world
[Laughter]
so that wretchedly that kind of sums up
what we thought of them thought of us
for lots of people and trash Banaszak
jews from hundreds of years it's it's a
bit of mix of an extreme but not that
much our experience with the non-jewish
world was miserable
in the Sparta quelled it was almost
miserable people make too much of how
much better it was an aspartic world it
was better but it depends on the time it
depends on the country and I remember
paying a typical a couple of years ago
to a colleague in in Los Angeles who was
the son of the chief rabbi of Tehran he
remembers as a child visiting his
grandfather who had a carpet factory he
used to learn in a lot he sat there
learning the whole time he used to come
down regularly and see what the workers
were doing but he said every community
around were was beset by people who were
Muslims of Jewish ancestry forced
conference over this of the video over
the last century it's it's not it's not
a pretty picture question is have things
changed so the two sides that are going
at each other there are people who argue
well you know some things have changed
after World War two every American
Church really every Western Church
announced the new attitude towards Jews
the Catholics
put teeth into it catholics change very
very very slowly but when they change
because they're hierarchical because
there's a power structure that change
meaning something not every Catholic
anti-semite suddenly changed his stripes
the Catholic schools stop teaching
anti-semitism they started teaching
about the Holocaust they started a
teaching positive things about Israel
there are circles around in which
liberal circles where if you Catholic
you just haven't made it unless you do a
Pesach Seder there's an ongoing
controversy Jews and Catholics whether
it's appropriate for Catholics who can't
find the Jewish Seder to go to to do a
Catholic Jewish Seder just to have the
experience so some people think that
that things have changed and then this
is the personal experiences that we have
the joke that I told sounds funny but it
doesn't resonate with the experience
that many of us have with trusted
friends and colleagues for decades
sometimes multi-generational is
something going on that's different or
we just you know speaking to the wrong
people
so some people think that well they're a
sizable number of people who have
changed and maybe we have to change as
well and then there's the other side how
many Orthodox Jews does it take to
change a light bulb change you know hell
no we won't go had a good thing to say
I'm not going to I'm not going to either
we could we could go back into history a
long time ago and read about John
Chrysostom fourth century one of the
early church fathers oh the guy had a
wedding he was called the golden tongue
because he really did have a way with
words you know sometimes we we are a
little a little irritated by some of our
friends but we would never come up with
language like the most miserable of all
men lustful rapacious greedy perfidious
bandits inveterate murderers destroyers
men possessed by the devil debauchery
and coronis have given them the manners
of the pig and the lusty goat pests of
the universe they have surpassed the
ferocity of wild beasts for they murder
their offspring I guess they went
through the same
now this morning after show but now this
is a strong stuff that people devoured
this suffer for centuries this is a tip
of the iceberg and then we have you know
in Milan times yeah we just we just
passed yo my show how many stories that
we have to tell but one that's probably
the most meaningful to me is that in the
club if I smuggle as you know jump the
train to Auschwitz clawed his way out of
the box car got out basically survived
the one dry and died of a broken heart
of the memories of the Jewish people
that wouldn't listen to him but at one
point he succeeded in getting a meeting
with a a Vatican representative in
Romania that way he was trying to
arrange for protection just for some
children justice some children and he
was turned down and this is what the
fellow said the papal representative in
Romania being Sunday neither I nor
Father - so concern ourselves with
profane Affairs so we're gonna Colbert
Vice month old challenged and profane
affairs were taught them at the lives of
10,000 children innocent children is the
death of innocent children profane the
response was there is no innocent blood
of Jewish children in the world all
Jewish blood is guilty you must die this
is the punishment that has been awaiting
you for that sit now where are people
that have made memory a mitzvah it's
hard to shake this stuff loose no matter
what you see so there is room for an
ongoing debate I have my bias which not
necessarily because it's what I do for a
living
you know you can do something for a
living and that's just what you have to
do it happens to be that I actually
believe it but you know you you know I
was biased before you got here but I can
certainly understand the other side now
why is it important that we talked about
this
I've got it down to two practical issues
and one theoretical issue the two
practical issues one of them I called
friends allies and enemies sneaky I can
call it three issues okay that way you
think that we're coming to an end
whenever that's okay friends friends
we're coming up on on yo mas what I hope
some of you are taking advantage of a
marvelous service that's offered I think
the name of the organization is told up
Easter L in the five days before y'all
mats what they're sending one video out
a day it's a good way to get into the
spirit of things to understand what a
wonderful wonderful thing I could have
Sparky did for us and giving us back our
country so I just watched the first
segment today one of the things that was
mentioned was it was about the the vote
that you would vote in
in fall of 1947 and the people who
worked on it so they mentioned that
Haiti was one of the swing votes and
they were undecided and they were trying
very hard who did they send to the
President of Haiti and it worked it was
a pastor Protestant pastor you know that
a couple of weeks ago couple months ago
by now president trauma announced that
he's moving the consulate the embassy
here to alighting from what I hear from
very very highly placed source is
actually evangelical circles of people
closest to the president at the moment
that thing is still on that may change
with the contrary to what people are
saying that they'd is still calendared
the the folks that that convinced Harry
Truman the science and his partner who
were the ones who were making all the
phone calls for the White House Harry
Truman didn't even win the Jewish vote
in New York after the recognize the
State of Israel but evangelical
Christians and what at that time wasn't
just evangelicals it was lots and lots
of Christians and APEC does great work
they should continue to do great work
but it pales in comparison just
numerically with the support we've
gotten for seven decades from Christian
communities this is so important to us
I would think and we need a couple of
hours to describe to you what's going on
and how crucial it is all I can tell you
is circles that you would not believe
I'm talking about like right-wing crazy
surveys that I for Channel I have access
to them and they grew up in that oh yeah
people have told me yes but go ahead
full steam ahead in with you
this is Cana for the Jewish people we
cannot afford to lose their friendship
the people are closest to Trump right
now are are you had Jellico's no good a
couple of them personally and work with
them and when after the president
announced that he's moving the embassy
to a call that there was one Central
American country that said Nieto we did
also see ok money from the United States
and that's the guitar this is a country
that in the last decade like several
other countries was taken over by
evangelical leadership they had nothing
to do excuse but they wanted to do this
purely on religious grounds we need all
the friends that we can get even people
are not friends we need allies now it's
not the same thing as a friend they're
people who don't agree with each other
about anything don't even like each
other too much but agree that they can
work on a comment on the comment on the
comment agenda we've been doing that in
the United States especially in the in
in New York for decades issues like aid
to schools busing and the flyff issues
didn't mean that though necessarily the
players like each other yeah you find
common cause right wrong it doesn't work
anyone I'll tell you why doesn't working
well the model of course works but one
thing has changed imperceptibly to most
people but it's real unfortunately it is
really real it used to be in the in the
era of the this mythical melting pot of
America
like everybody everybody saying that
knitting is cool and great you might do
business unlike my business everybody
respects everybody else and Jews could
fly under the radar it didn't matter
what they were doing as long as it was
legal my and it didn't matter what their
attitudes were or towards their
neighbors all that has changed all that
has changed forever because today
everybody has access to the biggest time
of them ever walked the face of the
earth since most remain over a banal
Google a new Google will tell you the
answer to anything it used to be 50
years ago you wanted to find out what
they were thinking Louisburg adam send a
spy into the mikveh today you don't need
any spy in a Bigfoot they know what
we're doing they know what we're
thinking literally they know our
attitudes because everything gets out
and it's magnified I I wish I had more
hair so I get to know more banal every
time you find you find some kind of an
intemperate remark on the on a Jew in a
Jewish web site especially the front web
sites there are thousands not dozens not
hundreds thousands of websites just
devoted to taking down Jews to promoting
anti-semitism there trolls out there
they are looking for the material they
tape the quotes and in the space of
hours it's all over the Arab world and
all over the world of anti-semites
so the cured of that the cure to that is
attitude if our attitude is dismissive
and contemptuous of other people they're
gonna know that they're gonna know that
so what our attitudes are towards other
people is increasingly important and we
can't fake it and then there are enemies
then there are enemies enemies who I
just as I just said pick up and
everything that we do is a particular
version of it
plays out here in in Israel can't give
away too much but had spies and people
in place the various conferences
anti-israel conferences here and one of
the favorite things that they do when
they bring over people from Europe and
America to try to make the case the
Palestinian case is that they'll take
them to particular places that I want to
mention where it's probably not fair and
they know that when they get off the bus
the people will be greeted by believe it
in that nice polite little Palestinian
children who are trained Wow if they
wait just a few minutes they will find
some Jewish looking kids who'll be
throwing rocks at the Arabs and they
don't have to say in and they don't have
to say anything
now if I lived in some of these places
it could be
I'd also be tempted I'm so sure I'd be
tempted to throw the rocks but it is so
self-defeating when you enough to know
when and where we hate these people
Bob Finnell raha said if you teach a
child what it is to be itself a little
kid to be made in God's image yeah any
idea what it means to be in God's image
and you should know the hierarchy that
not only are you created in God's image
but I thought of her who gave you
something more you tarried you into it
you turned you into it you owe then
you're giving the child
but this is what coming
I spent 9/11 it's one of the only people
at UCLA campus there's a meeting
arranged by a reporter that two of us
knew with the times a professor of
Islamic law had written an article about
about Reebok that the usury and the bad
new techniques of getting past it and he
thought it'd be good idea the two of us
met I was teaching Jewish law at Loyola
Law School at the time so we had sort of
a professional connection and we decided
not to not to cancel the meaning just
because of 9/11 we met and he told me
his story he was a genuine moderate he
said that he grew up not as a moderate
move in Egypt in Kuwait tree and is an
imam train to a Jews trying to think
that Jews are the lowest of the low
and I had no reason to suspect otherwise
but he came to the West he found them so
sort of alone and I think was at Yale he
said he didn't know anybody and
remarkably most of the people who
befriended him were Jewish and that led
to a crisis of faith why he said if they
lied to me about who the Jews were what
else did they like in the event we have
children we have told me no this we have
children who go off the Dera because
they were taught certain things and then
when they get out there in
the world they find that it's really not
true how could they lie so much if they
lied about who non-jews are what else do
they lie about so this is not is not
easy stuff so that's one issue what's
the other issue that's the other issue
something that's is more pretty often
nothin by this crowd it's called a mess
even for their know would there be no
practical issues around we still would
have to know what should our attitudes
be should we be changing our attitude
should we have so what I want to do in
the time remaining is to go through some
of the sources I'm going to talk pretty
quickly and I'm gonna concentrate on the
ones that it's more likely that most
people here have not heard with the new
material everything that I'm doing here
is just a way of wetting your palate and
your appetite there's a lot lot lot more
to be said but hopefully this will get
you thinking about some issues okay the
one that is bandied about the most is
acid-free
rashi sites in flemish a sub and Yakko
finally meet and write a stuff and
Yaakov embrace and their little thoughts
on the embrace hey and this is a dispute
among 10 a.m. about what it means one
opinion is that he he embraced him well
that's the one we're looking at for
Sherman by crisis haha bo dua ha ha how
many mad Russian do you know that
started with halakhah I love them it's
the law it's a fixed reality beyond Dawa
it's nothing
ace of so many Aiko hey Santiago but at
that time if mu Rock'em of his his
compassion was moved and he embraced him
beautiful hi
and so a lot of people skip the second
half and look at the first look of a
chapter
so the hence the title of what we're
talking about hey so who was the gay so
who is ASA there are many people who
assume that a sub is either Christianity
or the West for all non-jews you'll find
important names linked to those to those
who use there's one possibility that I
didn't mention you want to help me what
else could a sent me to be nice' in fact
I did several times a bar-ilan search of
the of this marriage and its use in all
the shilassen Shuba slip shoulder with
Russian will of the drudges that they
had in the collection of the time there
was not a single instance that I could
find
prior to the 19th century of this minor
Tezaab being used in a universal sense
now that does not mean that it's not
true could be just be a people assumed
it didn't have to be state you can't
prove the knob from non null hypothesis
but there is what to to talk about here
as a brilliant fellow in London where
name of high in Rappaport brilliant
scholar wrote an article in 2015
collecting all of those who believe that
a subsonic as Yaakov means all non-jews
it wasn't a particularly big list but
some important things shots and she was
high rate was something that Hassan so
fare promotion fine sting and the last
rep about Europe now truth be told what
I think all of his citations were all
that compelling but let's even assume
that it's true
does that mean that that's the last word
actually
it turns out not necessarily that must
be a cue for something remarkable year
in New York
uncredible sad they can one of the Godot
lamothe the same generation as her
question of Hankin with y'all hanky
they're naked in two places rights what
a vote completely meat side Oh somehow
my teeth in a terrible terrible crime is
committed by those people who give drush
us all the time on the topic ha la vache
so so nearly a Cove and that that hatred
is eternal Zee naked hi ms the- huzzah
bamaca this runs counter to the truth
counted the kazan encountered to to
scripture in another article he said
that the minor really applies to was a
sub here it means a sub they surveyed
his whole life but this time he he
changed he changed his ways and he says
why because i'll speak in those terms if
they mean anything more than a sub rock
out door my really bay how big does
Nishan is ax only talking about the ace
of the non-jews of their day the romans
of their day and and they mean to say
that even a stuff to change his spots
and can change his bay but there's more
for reasons that I don't understand
maybe because it's just a dumb mistake
I'm making but there's an important of
other genre we had not too long ago
I know there
at least a few people here in this room
who learned a few on me a little
interaction between review the hussy and
his good old friend Marcus Antonius
Aurelius and you know interesting guy
bankrolled the Mishnah literally
bankrolled he was the one providing them
the monetary support for the project but
they were friends they were friends
Antoninus one day he was disturbed by a
puck that he read about that 8:7 what's
gonna happen pay so in the end this is a
fellas are good on the base and he said
so is there any hope for me what it
would be like other stuff don't worry
I'll work I'll get you out again or give
fifty bucks the composite here tell them
that What did he say he said ASA means
those people who act like ASA
what does that tell me that means that
not everybody who's sort of
genealogically or certain that he's not
Jewish has to be a sub I I don't
understand why this floor is not cited
more often and then for those of you in
the academic circles in academic circles
that you point that that Professor
Menachem Kahana he found the earliest
edition of the supreme guess what the
phrase is not there what is in this
Afridi is not Halawa be a dua but how
low you do what how low you doing and he
speculates that the course of century is
in copy whatever hello became
abbreviated as hey Mahmoud and some
printed a Goliath decided that hail
ahmud must stand for Halawa and it made
his way into every text now he it
doesn't
that was the original text and maybe
doesn't even matter the sources and the
texts that we have are also part of
divine providence it's also part of us
it also means something I'm not staking
my my case done this alone but it is
something to think of that but maybe
more importantly more important than the
comments of minutes if then it's saved
if you only look at one source after
this to keep it in your arsenal to show
somebody else who's being kind of
obstreperous in the other direction
whoa Kevin it's it on the puss on the
what is it it's it's a he says
that the cane ladoris just as a sub was
moved at that moment in brotherly love
the king of the daughters similarly
throughout the future nashola Zehra a
sub miss owner in borough of tomorrow
when the descendants of a sub will be
moved with a spirit of purity logic
Irizarry Israel in my love song to
recognize the Jews and their elevated
station as gone on that newness owner in
logic here as a sub we all saw our move
to recognize a sub key off he knew who
he is our brother and if you don't
believe that it's SIV close relative of
his how comes powerful in the Varian
also talks about a hang new Asaph we
tend to gloss over that but but that is
what he's cool okay so that's non-jews
in general what about Christians in
particular we have our own set of
complaints and axes to grind with them
so I'm gonna give you some stuff that
will give you what to think about is
Christianity of Eleazar ax the Jews
category
yes I don't know if anyone who this view
said so if a Jew is forced to either
accept Christianity or die it's a
no-brainer as to accept that his
Christianity of uh bazzara for non-jews
so I'm sure half the people the room say
yeah there's the the famous the famous
Tulsa's and the Rama and when dosa says
that she took a kind of a shear divinity
is not problematic for non-jews and
everybody yells at the Roma not
everybody but a lot of our own them no
that's not what this means
it just means in the transgression of
bringing a non Jew - oh there's no
problem if they talk about God lost
something else there are people around
will tell you the Hulk is very very
clear it's evolved azar it's idolatry
for non-jews it's a violation or that's
ever miss has been enough I'm not so not
so certain that it's so clear I thought
that it's sort of balanced and that you
have about as many on one side as the
other but I'm not playing post date
tonight but what is overlooked is the
following question we live in very
strange times
very strange times let me ask you
appointed binary question what do we
want what this is the problem what is it
colorful what let's say Christianity
would be about ozone is it better to be
an open above Azara or an atheist and
prove it time's up the answer you're
supposed to give is of course given Ezra
in the run-up to a services near us
haricot the longest one hot thumb up I
record here at some point but what he
says is there's no question that the
Avera of rejecting
and community altogether is far worse
than ideology and intuitively it should
be the case an idol worshiper recognizes
that there's something greater than the
me than the human being
and there's always room to correct the
the misimpression some of them are
forced him on the Haggadah that say why
is Tara called one of our elbows my gosh
I start without rum so they say that
Tara they teach us something he told us
the idea of submission to a higher being
that's significant we live in a time
when for the first time in who knows how
long millennia atheism is becoming a
serious option for many people and one
that's growing by leaps and bounds
United States military now has atheist
chapters figured out one atheist jamuns
and all you know the Pew reports show
how atheism is growing do we have a
vested interest in making sure that
people retain some kind of a connection
with the idea of God my guess would be
yes my guess is that we're going to be
far better off as a as a Jewish
community living in a world where people
believe in some higher authority but you
don't know if I'm gonna sting you no no
we're a duck in Moluccan days it's the
famous incident with the that would be
conference finish I'm sending the Lions
out and they get scared they convert so
in the aftermath of that there's one
mysterious bus it which talks about
Kohanim our God who was sent out to some
of these different peoples to speak to
them each according to his own God huh
so the red ox says that what he did but
he squatted did was they pulled them
away from pure idolatry to a
perform a false belief in which there
was a chief god who's responsible for
everything
yeah his underlings to us that Samoas Oh
Dustin some others are but you should
know there's a puss akin Devoran Parekh
darlin which maybe hasn't hit you over
the head but the puss it talks about how
a Shem took the stars and all the
heavenly bodies I shared all MUC Hashem
Mohammed I shouldn't divided them
apportion them to the nation's I know
that's only one translation but there's
one of you that I could have sparked
what does that mean there's a slew of
Rishon in the knife Ronin that said that
say that for them they are governed by
intermediaries
there are things between them and how
cutter sparkled and a real winner is the
I K disease
okay so often overlooked because he
writes so much today if you can't get
something down to a three minute video
you have no chance of getting hurt I
mean Cyclorama would not make it today
but in the shar-pei fest he says you
don't find that a coach Burke who ever
got angry at those people who worshiped
heavenly beings you know he doesn't like
like pop or and I see this file in that
file but those who worship the Sun and
the moon who knows what Alpha Centauri
star was stopped out of them veering off
in the wrong direction
you gotta find that particle
that to angry at them why not so he says
a remarkable thing he says quoting this
possum in the barn dolly
I shall Akasha LaCava or some fella I'm
him that she took that believing in a
kind of share in divinity is just not so
wrong for non-jews they cannot be held
accountable to believe in the purity of
the oneness of God that we were they
weren't si night they did not have the
same relationship with a coach Merkel so
for what they're doing if they do in a
one God and the truth is that you know
there are like hundreds of millions of
Hindus who claim that their mana thiis
with a collection of 100 gods they still
claim to their mana this what do they
mean they mean that the ultimate reality
behind everything else I'm talking for
everything even on top of the the famous
Hindu Trinity is one God
so is that avodah Zarah frost 100
percent is it about a bizarre for them
mixed we have two different views put it
all together put it all together and
there's one other fact and then next
that's it and then we'll what do you out
of your misery and that is remarkable
rambha into two or three troopers the
Rambam was asked is it true that
non-jews a Navajo learned Torah
mentality chantara so the Rambam as you
know did not like Christianity very much
it had some really strong words about
Christianity he I don't know if he ever
met a Christian in his life Muslims he
suffered from and it has great things to
say about Islamic monotheism
as honest so he writes that that of
course it's also look more says in
saucer and you should not study with a
Muslim
Christians are different questions today
why because Christians believe in our
Scripture and if you learn scripture
with them properly
this is up I don't know you can say this
but he did he says I don't believe that
they're going to distort the meaning of
the text I guess
they say that we may change but it's
still for the robot to Satan this time
that because of scripture there is
something there that if you teach them
properly maybe they'll even come back
and the three they age Yaakov Weinberg
and a couple of troopers heliacal
Weinberg says that coming back doesn't
mean that they're gonna convert the
others right it means that they'll see
the truth they'll understand what their
role is in the world I'll understand
what the Jewish people's role is in the
world
they'll give honor to the Torah and to
Jews and if you don't recognize that
going on in the world today and seeing
your optometrist for a new prescription
we live in a time where there is so much
pressure against belief and they are so
unprepared for what's going on that they
are clamoring for some kind of visa from
us sometimes sometimes literally
clamoring sometimes just subconsciously
they the ones who've accepted the idea
it's not just Catholics following the
Pope's speech at the Kotel but going
into the idea that the quote their their
their text that they are their limbs
grafted onto the tree the trunk and the
trunk is Jewish who see that in
different times today you see and there
is something eternal about Jews
and they use have insight into things
because of the Torah they're not gonna
convert but they think that we received
God's Word before they did and they're
looking desperately for us
I could tell these stories I'm not gonna
do it on camera of like the only one
doing it that's for sure
but some people very much connected to
the of the administration one remarkable
fellow after spending time with higher
Hooper myself told us one day says when
he has a small problem was his
Protestant colleagues when he has a
major problem he goes thoughts attacks
rabbis he's not the first of the second
person but I've heard that from that's
how it should be now for two thousand
years we had no opportunity to me if
anybody came to us with such a proposal
to respond to it because the next day he
changed his mind or his son would would
assume power and be off with our heads
and maybe that will happen a year from
that but at the moment maybe we live in
a little bit of a bubble why would a
fetish bar who do such a thing you know
and I think it really really dense the
real deep people here who know the
rom-com well and though that's to nose
so essential thesis is that the ultimate
way of making that sham one in the world
is when you conquer and you overcome the
most serious objections to his wellness
and what is that ultimately what's the
most serious challenge to the oneness of
God evil so it's when cloudy sorrow
survives and is able to look evil
straight in the face which we can do
plenty of there and and say how good is
working you can't push us away and we
don't understand it because we're bust
over done with flesh and blood but we
can we can handle it we can we can do it
it's not somehow a spirit of who you are
we refuse to believe that it is that
shows the the ultimate triumph oh my
gosh I'm busy robbing a smaller level
think of the beauty of the irony I'm a
compartment taking people over 2,000
years we're the cudgel and he was the
against us pastor Shawn when he wanted
to have to punish us and to take them
turn and turn them into friends allies
and even and even friends I have no I
have no quibble with those who won't
hear any of this or on the verge of
barfing but listen to it we have
industry and we have too many naive
people who are willing at any the drop
of a hat to say yeah things have changed
at different yeah it's not always the
case we have to learn the lessons of
history here in Israel the problem is
intensified by the problem like you
mentioned before or proselytizing that
there are Christian groups that
proselytize openly there are Christian
groups that are more nefarious they'll
tell you they're not proselytizing and
they really are but there are groups
that don't proselytize there are groups
that understand that they want the
relationship what they do
people and they understand how
contemptible it is that that
proselytizing goes on and they'll agree
to behave you find some groups Catholics
are are struggling with this for those
are really interested I can point you to
a remarkable document published about
two years ago year and a half ago I had
over the document this by the difficult
Commission not a relationship with the
Jews in which they they said we don't
understand why it's not a contradiction
to our theology but we know it is true
Jews somehow have their way of being
recognized by God they don't need to be
saved by this Catholics don't
proselytize if they weren't big
proselytize or less than Jews there are
other groups that that they they're not
always the most astute theologians but
they'll say we would love for you to
recognize our save here but that's your
business maybe one day you will come you
will accept them in the meantime we
understand you live and the holiness of
the way you way to conduct your lives
and the greatness of the Torah they need
that power as a friend of mine a
[Music]
Anglican theologian put it he said what
evidence any evidence that God will keep
his promise over a long period of time
even for people who are onward where
there's only one place
so we need them if that if there's
nothing to that then we have no
assurance as Christians so because I'll
say that a superfluous and no lot I
believe you free to be free to accept it
or not that there is a no lot I can't
tell you how long it'll last
but that there were remarkable
opportunities and I'm an opportunist I
think that there's an opportunity to be
taken carpe diem
grab it we should take the opportunity
all of you want to consign up with me
after it's there are always oops I mean
it seriously groups of visiting
Christians coming through if we don't
get them the Palestinians do and there
is nothing more powerful to sell
Christians on the connection with the
Jewish people I'm a trip to Israel I've
heard this from them then a Friday then
a little shots of the in a genuinely
Orthodox one with multiple generations
with good food with different order
people will spend ten days here going to
all the places up north that the average
Christian hasn't heard of and they'll
say the most memorable experience is
Friday night and another nice one and
I'll be looking for those okay any
questions we have some redness and
regular
[Music]
so my opinion doesn't matter so much
I'll tell you that the have one one
colleague who works particularly with
European Jews brilliant guy here in our
know Christians Haim Eisen in our note
and he works particularly with European
Christians and they're in a battle
minority that's part of why I think many
of them are doing true but I think
anybody can do to uh I think we have to
not be not my even look for the signs of
it there they're the reasons why people
do to vote and it happens to me with
European Christians that they were
called communities of people who were
most uh nefesh in the Holocaust and
throughout throughout bloody European
history and then as Franco Mike's
pointing out that when Jews have to take
refuge someplace when they had a run the
place that they ran through usually with
some Church figure sometimes they got
turned in or
but often they were they were protected
you have especially people in the
Calvinist tradition in France those
remarkable communities and France and
couple died in the process and they did
it on religious grounds
so it's not and probably what the world
is it's never black and white
they're always shades of gray I think
there are some there they're people
worthwhile talking about their
communities in in Europe today and every
time is some new outrage and CBS does
this would be biessed of that so
European church is saying well if
they're boycotting this company we're
gonna start a campaign to buy from that
country it's actually a tool that we use
we try to point out to some of the vini
as people that every time they have a
new boycott of some product it actually
means that more the product is sold to
good questions I'm not as much of the
next person or cook as I should be
although I do believe that of cook of
cooks approach it's one of the most
crucial things to convey to young people
today much of what ails the Jewish
community coming out of the liberal wing
is a false kind of universalism people
are just don't are not comfortable with
the idea that you're meeting any
specialists in the Jewish means anything
that's really what's behind Europe
nationalism is a crime because your I
had all these world wars here because of
nationalism privilege it's all being one
happy country like the EU and let's see
happen how that lasted but Ruth Cooke is
one of the most explicit about the
difference between the Jewish neshama
the non-jewish Neshoba thoroughly tested
in academic circles they blame it on
reviewed a lengthy in the ballot Anya
and sometimes they don't realize that
we've cooked it as well wouldn't stop
them really but it's truth cook does
very very explicit that or if cook is
also far away beyond anyone that I know
in hundreds of years a universalist
and the two anon contradictory
it seems the cookies though they're not
they're just so much they're of cook
about the universal message about how
the embrace has to start off with
himself with his spouse with his
children with this community with his
people until it embraces the entire
earth that's kind of a common places
somehow it's not contradictory I can
explain why it's not but I don't have
the time right now but it's not a net
and that's important I don't know which
Christians he was talking about and
whether he would say the same thing and
he met Christians or manifestly
different there's no emotion even if
they act sweet though they're really
after something but I've met people who
don't seem to be after I could be wrong
I could be naive okay but I put him in
the company of a lot of other people
okay what was the second class the
second question was someone stood up in
deliberative art door and I use the
phrase the issue amongst remote and he
cited his raise a lot in the literature
to support that oh okay starting from
the Gemara which may or may not be
talking about about him the descriptions
it's very hard to believe that the issue
in the gara really was the the one-third
of the the Christian Trinity because
he's put at a period of time about a
hundred fifty years before but some have
two roots before that they were made so
my focus fishermen they were Rachelle
who believed that he was the Machado who
believed that he wasn't in one of the
great church debates in Europe one of
the volley ptosis were up and down that
the Asian the Gemara is not Jesus the we
suffered so much there was so much of a
distortion of truth the essence of
Hashem through Christianity I don't want
us to be naive about the negatives that
macau police was solid a Sakai whoever
it was who started this whole mess maybe
should be seen with the most utter
contempt okay that's
it's a view it's a view there are other
things there are other views and then
there's a third even if you don't buy
the other views to say such things today
puts the Jewish people in danger to save
when other people can hear and they
always hear everything puts the Jewish
people in danger to train students to
think that way would not every student
is so discerning I give you a very very
very small example some of you were
probably shocked that I said the word
Jesus if people in my family are shocked
now we don't people have a situation I
said and I was so careful about doing it
that even when I did radio shows i'ma
find some circumlocution I talked about
I found the way not to mention his name
I thought I was being from - because
radio show wants to know a Drivetime
radio and went very nicely half hour
show and afterwards okay in the
interview somebody was listening said
you know what the host said after you
got a lot soon as they got love he
announces the two hundred thousand
people he said did you notice that the
rabbi couldn't bring himself to say the
word Jesus after that I wasn't gonna be
so from a nice motel hahaha I wouldn't
do anything that's awesome so I hope I
don't do anything
one two and that by three or and that I
think is gonna have to be a great we're
running we ran out of time one time ago
we think that's a yes yeah I wish I
could tell you had a practical strategy
for it I know that there if you if you
read Akira you will notice in the last
couple of issues like a little bit of a
subliminal campaign in that direction
Akira is called the Flatbush Journal of
intellectual thought that's the original
byline which people thought was a bad
joke but it turns out it wasn't a joke
is it actually an excellent journal when
there was saying
Flatbush Rob what never was in Flatbush
did not contribute to the kind of
balloon is on the on the and the
editorial board it's very diverse it's
so they're people who are pushing the
idea even within Flatbush and even in
Williamsburg that it's a complex world
and in America maybe the thing has to be
a scare tactic Jews are gonna lose in
the next couple of decades a lot of the
advantage that they've been accustomed
to I grew up that the ever pace up you
could count on the city to have an extra
garbage pickup to have business the days
before or to do a bigger comets we've
got a lot of groups now competing for
political influence and Jewish influence
has waned and will continue to wane as
Jewish population wanes as Jews don't
vote as a bloc which politicians are now
understanding so a lot of things that we
took for granted us Anglos the United
States is going to change when some of
those things start happening they're
going to be people around are going to
say review you gotta understand they're
on to us they know who we are if we
treat them we even think about them
Julie they're going to combine quantum
above me we treated the same way so I'm
hoping that that necessity is going to
be the mother of invention
it can't happen without patina without
getting to some of the people I can't
tell you that old leaders are ready for
this
some are you go to Philadelphia and
particularly close with right now
three generations of common s keys -
will lead up as an American flag outside
this house I saw myself - will spamming
I was on the street talking through
school and I made a conversation out of
the corner of his eye he saw two little
black kids from the neighborhood
he ended the company interrupted the
conversation turn to the kids start a
talk to them and asking out their
parents were several gets that's the
fact it is about most circle Burtka so
you need you need the you need the right
kind of people on the other hand they
went to one another another person also
close with and talk about the Russian
epidemic and he basically said among my
followers they're not gonna hear it
they're just not going to hear it today
this was 20 years ago
today I suppose some of them are ready
to hear it's gonna be slow who was
number two
Lauren
maybe yeah i'm contrarian because they
makino hoods and ashiness there are lots
of people who did nice things for the
Jewish people and really hated Jews the
Pharisees wrote books about the city of
isola me includes Johannes rifle
Brooklyn did a lot to safely gamar from
being burnt you know was it the 16th
century he hated Jews learned with the
spar no even these languages the people
who do things because they do there was
a survey that a survey is studying
number of years ago of non-jews in
Germany who helped Jews and what were
their what was the reason
so there were multiple reasons but there
was what there was one group a large
group the largest group that just didn't
like the idea of being bossed around by
this terrible authority figure on the
other side if what he wanted was the
Jews dead they knew who's gonna work in
the opposite direction so I don't know
but I think that you can point to lots
and lots of other people I mean think
the gaber's of children of top of top
Nazi figures listen legitimate gamers
and their living I mean from lives
something moves their so let it begin I
don't care but but but but but they did
turn around they did turn around and and
I've been in contact over the years with
with groups the group of Lutheran nuns
whose sole mission is friendship with
the Jews and then I process I see in
Germany in Arizona they have to live in
two places okay yes sir I wish I could
tell you had a magic bullet that the
magic pill
they didn't care at all I don't that I
have something I think is of a little
substance and just like old politics is
local or relationships are local a lot
of people are treated it through the
through the press the media social media
lots of images of countries but we have
the ability of cream of creating
different images in relationships with
people one by one less of an opportunity
here in Israel if there are few angles
here who still commute certainly those
who live in other countries have that
opportunity with every interaction every
time they're standing in line of a
supermarket at the time that they they
greet the Milman in the morning how many
stories that we have to hear about about
non-jews and the and though in the world
will put themselves out because they
have a good relationship with was just
before and it saved lives
the the only way to deal with
misinformation is to provide proper
information so what I said there a lot
of their opinion out there who can make
proper impression but it has to become a
priority for the community it has to
become part of an action plan explain I
will explain is there are people who are
into vivid depictions of their form of
the endgame it's pretty interesting
reads like a novelist matter-of-fact how
whatever his name is actually translated
into
the Left Behind series and it was very
powerful stuff
people feel these are the people who
believe that in their literalists about
the about the Bible and their Bible in
particular and think that the final the
final showdown is going to happen only
when all the Jews are brought to Israel
and the second company can't take place
until you have this huge war and the
rapture and so they want the Jews ear so
that that you know the game can continue
the way they they they wanted by the way
is not the first time in history that we
were in that position the most famous
time that I know it was Menasha venue
straw and that's Benny straw one of the
leaders of Amsterdam jewelry and some
bread who convinced Cromwell that he was
blocking the second coming of Jesus and
why was this rabbi answer then telling
me that he said look you believe that
the biblical prophecy don't you he said
of course they says well the Bible that
says that the Jews are gonna be
scattered to the four corners of the
earth and I'm looking at the globe and
there's one place that doesn't let you
is in this right here in England
unless you let the Jews back in so we've
you know we've been in that position so
to answer the second part of it
I would for practical reasons as an
Orthodox Jew I couldn't care less what
what they believe if they're proselytize
think that's something else but I'm not
what I like telling some of my Christian
friends that the Jews who object most
specifically for conservative Christians
praying for them are Jews who don't pray
JUSA pray your life's a pawnshop is
pretty smart they can figure out whose
pray is to listen to it was not there
I'm a listen everybody's for my ears and
make them all happy that's more that's
what that's what it comes work was for
so I'm not offended by strong beliefs of
people that I disagree with and I find
that usually evangelical Christians are
not offended by my strong beliefs
they're actually reassured by things
that might have happened every time that
one of these one of them would you know
I come real close and say something
about about Jesus I would just kiss
close and give him a because Allah after
realize he's not gonna convert me so
let's just go but it happens to me there
are those people out there in 15 years
of working with that community I have
still to meet one person like that I
know they're there I've met lots and
lots and lots of people who don't
believe that
who who take the same attitude towards
evangelizing well I'm still that we did
about being in their legaia who
passively will don't my example we hope
that people get the message we hope that
people will see that we leave good pious
lives and that they learn that way I
have no problem with that okay thank you
for being an attentive audience
