9 Days, 9 Thoughts: Day 3
707 views
Imagine living in a zoo. How long would it be before you’d feel out of place, unsettled, yearning for more? That discomfort is meant to wake us up. We’re not meant to settle. We’re meant to build a life—and a world—that’s greater. Watch as Rabbi Moshe Schwed, Director of @alltorah shares a powerful perspective on how we can achieve a higher level of spirituality in our 9 Days, 9 Thoughts series.

Could you imagine being told that you have to live
in the zoo? Now, you weren't told you have to live
in the cages with the lions or the tigers and be
scared for your life. Just live with the monkeys,
live with the giraffes, but live like an animal.
Be fed like an animal. Live in the mud and the
dirt like an animal. No showers, no regular
food. You're going to live in the zoo. How
long would it take you till you can't stand it
anymore, you just want to get back to regular
life? An hour? Two hours? We're in the middle of
the Nine Days. We don't have the Beis Hamikdash.
During the times when the Beis Hamikdash was
standing, people lived on so much higher levels
of spirituality. They were connected to each other
on such greater levels. We don't even realize what
we're missing. And that itself is the tzar of
the Churban. We have to think of ourselves as if,
on a certain level, we're living in a zoo. And we
have to have that feeling in our hearts. We can't
stand this anymore. We want to live on a higher
level. We have to think greater. We have to act
greater. And that will give us the opportunity to
feel in our hearts as if we're actually missing
the Beis Hamikdash. And we pray that the Beis
Hamikdash should be returned speedily in our days.
