welcome to our one minute hello series
for this year ello 5781 most people
think that rosh hashanah preparing for
the high holidays is all about
reflecting on our past it's taking
responsibility it's evaluating it's
being accountable for what we did this
past year but the truth is for many
people that's debilitating it's
paralyzing because we can't go back in
time we can't undo and regret only
demoralizes us regret only makes us feel
stuck well i have good news for you the
truth is that's a misconception it's a
misnomer as to what the high holidays
what the days of judgment are really all
about the gemara the talmud rosh
hashanah tells us
the truth is that we are only judged for
our actions at that moment see the past
is irrelevant because we can't control
it because we can't go back in time
because we can't undo it we're not
responsible for it and the future is not
yet here it hasn't yet happened how
could we be accountable for choices we
have yet to make the only dimension that
we live in is the present it's how we
define ourselves in the here and now and
that's great news because it means i
don't have to live with guilt or beat
myself up true i have to think about the
past in the way it informs the present i
can't be nostalgic or hold on to the
present but all i am responsible for is
how i define myself what my identity is
in the year and now so my friends in
this month of ello let's live in the
present let's take responsibility for
right now all we have is today embrace
it and be the best version of yourself
