hello and welcome to Stark's monthly
webinar held here in the Stark main
offices in Baltimore Maryland I'm rert
Goldberg our Our Guest again today is
Rabbi bar familiar to our regular
listeners welcome back RAB buyer thank
you today we're going to be talking
about PES products Passover products um
you can see some of them we have an
array over here in front of us uh uh
that were uh given to us by Seven Mile
market and we appreciate their help yep
donated uh well we donate and we return
them when we finished oh okay so I had
my dibs on that that that marshmallow
bar there okay hoping uh if you'd like
to call and join and hear us by phone it
is 218- 8951 1203 again 218 8951 1203
passcode 2020 pound
um and on the web we're at learn
kosher.com for/ kosher we're here the
last Wednesday of every month at 12:
noon uh with God's help and if you want
to get an email to know what the topic
is or if there are any changes send us
an email to info
stark. or you can give us a call
um today's topic rby berer is PES
products we have this webinar every year
before PES or real live class sometimes
in town um and uh we always point out
that at this time our Passover book is
out couldn't get this years but this is
2014 that's great okay do Char props on
this exactly we we have this year one
out as well um uh and we will get that
you can get that that this year's in the
this one's on sale the last year yeah
very so you can get you can get I would
say 99% of the information is still
valid but that's the key R buyer only
99% that 1% how do you know how do you
know if that what is you're looking at
is that 1% that's why you got to get the
book every year absolutely um it's a
it's it's not a uh 1% Can Make It or
Break It On Your PES 1% it's really
consumer service it's not thank you
thank you Rabbi Chapman this is this
year it's just a different color on the
front but that 1% is different I think
it's thicker this year also it is
thicker um we did have a few changes uh
for those who are into the book uh by
the medicines where we list the
medicines at a Kosher for acceptable for
for PES instead of having a code like a
four-digit code and then you have to
look back at a different page to see
what that stands for every medicine has
the name of the company written out by
it we had a lot of complaints about that
because it's it gets confusing so every
medicine that there are thousands of
medications there each one has the name
of the company handwritten that it's
yeah that it's acceptable
from in uh yeah it's it's typed out
there so it's a little bit uh um a
little bit easier to use we
also Zev says by the way you can chat
with us we're happy if you chat with us
on our on our uh on our uh screen there
at the bottom left
one second I do have the the book here
as a uh here we go it's going to come up
here here's the we're showing everybody
this is the Passover directory Bri a
bridg web it say Yes um it is available
as a uh as a PDF if you go to our
website stark. org you can find the book
uh most of our information there except
for the medications which we're
restricted on because it comes from the
Co in Los Angeles you can get it online
it's just it costs you that that you
have to pay because that's our agreement
with the cola it's a fundraiser for them
and that information is available as a
um as a PDF or as you can get I have an
app on my phone um and it's really
convenient if you're in the store so
yeah we have many all the products and
things except for the medicines are
available for free right as an app right
so about it's like half the book is
available what we can give out for fre
most it's Avil for we do give it out Zev
says until PES this webinar should be
daily yes should give it okay daily okay
so uh we we we are available by phone or
by email and we try to get to everybody
we have thousands of questions and um
and we're glad that you joined us today
so Rabbi B let us
begin with um with some of these
products that we have over here and if
you have questions feel free to ask us
here chat with us let me close
this um this this book here
on the spot for a second and ask you a
question about milk uh you can put me on
the spot but I hope I know the answer
you're getting me nervous what is the
question no I just want you to explain
what the deal with the milk is why do we
have to buy milk before PES
and what's the uh what's the real deal
with
milk hold on one second I'm just
bringing this up to make this chat a
little bit a little bit bigger um you
want to know about
milk okay can I read to you from what
from our from
let's see what we we first want to
reference I'm asking because someone
asked me and I wanted to get um
milk in areas where kosher for Passover
milk is not available milk should be
purchased before
Passover um well because we're not sure
what else might be made on on the
equipment and uh that way it would be it
would be
nullified um that's why you purchase it
all the things that we that we say
purchase before Passover it's because we
have some suspicion there might be
something in there that is not
acceptable but in minute amounts and if
you buy before Passover it would be
nullified and would be okay if you buy
on Passover there's no Hally according
to Jewish law there's no nullification
on Passover so then you have a problem
okay um there you can buy regular milk
in the United States you can buy regular
milk I mean not it's notel it's not if
you're not careful if you're not if
you're buying milk then it's going to be
you know you're going to be able to find
uh
and if you're buying non yourself that's
where the issue um comes comes up okay
now let's talk about some of these
products
here okay RAB bu this is California
seedless raisins it's Upp and this is a
way that you can save money it's a
shopright brand okay so I I didn't check
the prices but it should not be more
expensive than the regular price during
the year even though it has a p at this
time it should be you know know it's a
store brand it's not really anything
special really can I buy any raisins in
the store no no raisins do need to have
a dried fruit in general do need to have
a Passover heer but um you know if you
can save money by buying a brand that
you're satisfied with and and and and
you know why not okay we have here
um we have here some unsalted cashew
nuts from a star K brand uh 21st century
is that youry and no it's not my company
and it has on it staran it says kosher
for Passover do these need to be kosher
for Passover can you buy them no these
also these these do need Kos because
they roasted they're roasted but if you
have raw nuts I always like to point
this out you have runuts these are are
shelled peans um that say on them koser
for Passover those do not need to be
special koser for Passover as long as
there's no preservatives so in other
words you don't have to get it with it
same ker you do not have to get this one
you get just an example of it this is an
example of ones that do have but you can
buy anyone that uh that doesn't have the
preservatives and uh and that's true in
general with with raw with raw nuts that
aren't uh processed and so on
um if you buy the one with the
certification what do you get for your
money you get that a a mash has been
you're asking that question here at the
start right well people want to know why
should I pay more or should I pay more
the answer is you get that absolutely
that much you should pay top dollar
right especially if it's a stark we're
trying to save people money so what you
get more is that you get that somebody
Rabbi Mash has been at the at at the
plant during the processing to make sure
there's absolutely nothing else going on
there and it's it's and and you know
it's a higher level but no to us an
acceptable level is even with out that
if if on the things that we say are
acceptable the peans though we should
point out that if they are or
pieces there we do require a passive
certification because they may be soaked
in some alcohol but these are these are
whole peans I'm covering this over here
so you don't see who this is I don't
want it's about okay yeah this is baking
soda baking soda special for PES this is
this looks like an armor Hammer box
right right but you could theoretically
buy an Arman Hammer box of baking soda
right right we baking soda baking soda I
I would almost say that with uh baking
soda buy
this particular right we have that in
our book baking soda all are acceptable
thank you for for hiding that I I don't
really know with baking soda if you buy
the koser Passover if you're really
getting anything more for your money I
don't even know if it's more expensive
but if it is I would be perfectly fine I
don't with the regular baking s soda
it's not um it's not it's not a really a
serious item your Arm and Hammer I don't
think they're doing it in the plant you
know what I mean they have their own
they have their own their own place even
though it looks like flower it's not
right okay so let's um you know Rabbi B
here we're kind of free willing back and
forth It's not a set people who come to
the webinar know already that it's not a
set Class A Shear where you have you
know set topics we like to to to go with
the flow and um you know that's really
what it's meant for and and uh that's
what we're going to do right now so
let's take
some of these questions is there a
difference between baking soda and
baking powder is there a difference
between baking soda and baking powder
chemically from a
point I don't baking powder we say
requires kfb
certification without it it probably has
kidos in it oh really Kos yes it has
kidos which are not acceptable to to ASM
so therefore we do require so the answer
is yes baking soda baking soda right
okay okay Jeff
says uh are there any specific jail cap
pain relievers that are
acceptable Jael cap okay that is that is
yes as he says that's a regular kosher
question
um off the top of our heads that that's
that's a difficult question for us to
answer uh straight away but we do have
one thing you should know is that we do
have our quick pick lists and I think
that's an important thing let me let me
see if I can um it'll take me just want
to mention that Rabbi Goldberg is was
instrumental in setting up the Passover
book and uh and the quick pick list that
we're about to reference right now okay
you can fine uh he's a humble I
appreciate that um so so the uh so we
have a quick pick list what's a quick
quick pick list it's on our website um
and what it is is you know in our book
we have hundreds of medications or
thousands and and and and shampoos and
all those things that don't have any
issues but let's say I don't need a
specific one I just want to know tell me
I'm going to the store I want to get uh
some some pain reliever and I want to
get some shampoo and some soap that's
not a problem I don't really care so
much about the brands I just want to
have a so that list is available for you
that's that's a very important list and
we did actually send it out RAB Holland
sent out a link to it on our email so if
you're if you're on our emails you would
have gotten it's online though isn't it
it's online and on the website it's
onsite access it on the website it's
really a great a great uh a great list
to
have okay are there any uh probiotics
that I Kosher for PES we also got that
question uh by emails I'm not sure if I
was just in re he's office yesterday
okay and he was like oh my gosh these
probiotics are like unbelievable it's
like everyone's taking probotics
everyone's in probiotics all day he is
on the phone all day about all day is is
our um is our um is our uh medicine
expert and he's on the phone about the
prop so yes the answer is yes there are
uh Freedom makes some so I would uh they
would have kidne in theman they like
corn starch holding it together but if
you need the uh the stick with the
kosher the Jewish Brands the kosher
Brands H Brands like Freda well there
are yeah there are lots of them I would
recommend to take the probiotic that you
that you want the read the ingredients
for any obvious com and if you don't see
any then call the office or email us and
we can help you find a probiotic that is
good for p I've been trying to find figs
that are k k for p but can't find them
what is the
issue that is a good question I I I I
don't know I mean there might be some
sorbates that might be uh used to
preserve them possible I don't know why
there aren't any kfp pigs I don't figs I
don't think that it's not it's it's I
don't think specific reason okay raisy
says if nuts such as are Kosher but it
says in the packaging that other nuts
such as peanuts are processed in the
same plant is that a problem that's a
good question yes we do say that that's
part of our in our guide it says that if
the label states that p a processed in
the same place then you should not use
it for for PES or other is processed
there however if it has a Kosher for PES
certification on it and it has some
allergy statement on it then you don't
need to worry about it because it's just
a kidne this is a kidne issue it is a
kidney is could you buy them and check
them theoretically well you can you
can't check them
because they raw I'm talking about H
they're raw I'm talking about if you can
nothing we're not saying this pieces of
peanuts or whatever in your in your nuts
it's just that it's made on the same
equipment so it might have some residue
so that's what we're concerned about but
if it has a kosher certification that's
reliable we get this question all the
time you know it says on it that it's
kosher but but yet it says that it's
made on equipment that's the package is
shelfish yeah exactly so if the product
says that it's kosher we can rely on the
agency to do what's necessary to clean
it out to CER it whatever would be
necessary to uh to um to make sure that
it's going to be okay the same thing
holds true for PES all those allergy
statements um if they have a
certification we can relying the
certification to take care of it if it
doesn't have a certification then uh and
it says it's made on equipment that
packages shellfish then we can't take
responsibility for that and I don't
think that we would recommend that
that's another question that we had
gotten via email okay Elise says why
does pure maple syrup with a nonp
Passover heure not acceptable for
Passover what's the issue with pure
maple syrup is the uh could be K us I
mean antio antio right the antifoam
explain what antifoam is everybody when
you make maple syrup so it tends to it
tends to foam up so in order to control
the foam they add a chemical um which is
called an
antifoam um so an antifoam antio really
could be not Kosher forget about the
fact that it might be a a hummus problem
but it could be a kidne issue I believe
right so as far as the non-closure issue
goes we we say that since it's so
infantes that it's so we're not
concerned but for the Passover we do
require a a a certification on it
um what are three Judith wants to know
three commercial medic companies that
have items that are Kosher for p i mean
there's there's more than fre there's if
you look in our book you really should
is it possible to pull up this quick
pick uh list the quick pick list yeah I
can do it it would just take me a couple
minutes but there's there's various
Revlon makes Covergirl makes you know
all the famous companies make Cosmetics
but not every item is is acceptable so
that's what we have the uh the list
Alisa says here in Israel many of the
kosher for Passover products are cheaper
due to competition
wow another reason to go to Israel for P
make yeah that that is definitely not
true here in the United States the PES
products are much more expensive and
people um it's very difficult sometimes
to to to deal with that yes
um K Ron says baking powder is baking
soda with the inclusion of an acid
source that substance can be tartaric
acids which is a great product requiring
certification okay tartaric acid
actually we we are various H
reasoning we we not require
certification on it so it's only the
seems to be the kidus that might be in
there that's the PES problem Are All
Star parchment
papers p RAB bar your here's parchment
paper that we have here this is a
typical um parchment paper brand
Palisades with a star k and the answer
to that question is that the answer is
is
that mostly mostly okay but not all of
them not all of them basically I could
tell you though that the if it's a
non-treated parchment paper plain
parchment paper or if it's a Quillon
treated parchment paper so then it would
be Co for Passover the only ones that
we've found so far that we certify that
are problematic are ones that are coated
with silicone okay so let's take a look
at this how do I know I'm a consumer but
it's hard sometimes to know because
silicone coded so this one would need so
this one would need it would need the
star uh it's it's on our list it does
have it okay and in our book and online
again you can get the list of all the RK
parchment papers I buy I was picking out
these products yesterday yeah and I saw
this interesting uh uh box of parchment
bags star k parchment bags uh with a
star
KP they show you you put your it has a
piece of salmon going in there did you
ever you said you never my mother yeah
when she used to to make turkey she
would put the turkey in a brown paper
shopping bag okay and that helped to
keep the moisture in the oven she put it
in the oven that and it's not burn I
don't know how she did it but she did it
mom mom knows how to do those things but
I think that I think that's the concept
here it's supposed to help it keeps the
the the uh keep the moisture in and
things like that yeah uhuh it an
interesting product I I didn't know
didn't know about that okay let's
continue a little bit with our Show and
Tell here of I buy it and then we'll go
back to the questions um
uh this
is a box of hand matah and actually it's
packed in Israel and it has the over
here it has the star k p it's a star k
hand mat you haven't seen that no it's
it's a seven mile Market brand Market
brand yes they they they contracted to
have matah made for them shur matah made
for them in Israel and um that actually
is going to be my mat by the Seder um
donated by 7 m no no paid for by by us
and it is um it is a little cheaper it
is cheaper than it's
$659 in seven miles what a deal yeah
right well every few dollars helps a
right buyer okay this is another another
matah that's s mile made no name brand
matah what is that is there any is there
something on the this oh okay it's it
says
shab it's sh mat it's it's obviously
machine mat box
means
we we've had mat we we'll assume that
our listeners know what that is without
going into it but um the um the kabura
part of it is that many matzas although
people assume that they're 18 minute
mates that they're made in 18 minutes
actually we've discussed this before a
few times that they actually 22 minute
mates that there's four minutes of
needing that they do not include in the
18 minutes for various umic reasons but
it it doesn't it's not really 18 minutes
the kabur statement is telling you that
it really is true 18 minutes from when
they put the water onto the flour until
the end of the baking and then they
start to clean it's a it's a it's a you
know it's exactly it's less than 18
minutes and that is what the other
brands of kabur as well that Hadar makes
a brand of kabor um it's not the same
kabur it's not what do you mean it's not
the same it's the same concept It's Made
just means that's what the has come to
mean it's come to mean that it's true 18
minutes while other mat that say 18
minutes is not really they don't usually
yeah right they're 22 minutes right the
18 minute there are 18 minute mes that
say 18 minutes on the box that are
really 22 and that's why raban at one
point um uh took off his his
certification not because the Matas were
not Kosher they were acceptable from A's
perspective but from perspective of of
of of
you know full disclosure he didn't feel
comfortable with it and we gave up that
certification okay let's keep going on
over here Rabbi buyer this
is this is how do you pronounce this Ser
cus I think it's Ser Ser series juices
these are popular juices that are from
South Africa South America South Africa
South Africa okay South Africa um this
is mango and it has a star KP there are
mangoes out there with that have just a
regular star k and the reason although
normally it has a star KP all year there
was some additive this year in the mango
that was not acceptable and they only
they only put a a star on it so you
should be careful when you buy the the
sah juices this is um saff safflower oil
um with a with a PES certification can
we just talk briefly about oils which
oils are are acceptable well that one we
do accept that one we do accept it's not
we do not consider Kitt when I was a kid
we used to use peanut oil peanut oil yes
mhm we don't do that anymore as a matter
of fact I got an email uh this week
Rabbi berer that um they wanted to know
that they do not consider peanut oil to
be kidos this particular the questioner
does not as many people did not years
ago right maybe 30 40 50 years ago
people were using peanut oil um and it
came it came with the PES certification
he said he still considers it not to be
kidneys he wants to know where he can
get it um I said doesn't exist in
America there's no market for it anymore
because maybe in isra I suggested maybe
in Israel there might be a there might
be people who are who are still making
it with a with a PES cerification so you
want to talk about oils go ahead way no
I just wanted to ask what other oils
besides safflower oil would be available
uh for use or it should be cotton seed
oil cotton seed oil cotton seed oil
which is the oil of choice oil I've seen
people use that a lot now it's expensive
though the cotton seed oil is the oil of
choice and things like mayonnaise um
Passover something like avocado oil
possibly I've seen that avocado o m yeah
they're all expensive I don't know if
it's available for PES but these are
olive oil of course we do require we do
require um I was told all olive oils a
kosher for Passover is this true the
star that is the opinion of some
agencies are the star opinion is that it
that that even extra virgin olive oil
requires a Passover certification um
many of our oils are Passover certified
and you know we would would require a
Passover certification um interestingly
enough for everybody the cotton seed oil
I think that's cotton seed oil this this
one spray the spray yeah cotton seed oil
that is for for Passover spray in Israel
they consider that to be kidne so you
will not find in a typical uh certified
product for ashkenazim any cotton seed
oil so the who considers a
kidney yeah the general um custom in
Israel is is not to use cotton seed oil
for ashm on P
in America we do not consider it um
kitne so you know there are those
distinctions between Israel and America
and different places in the world for
sure okay let's go back to our to our
questions here RAB
Bayer um coconut milk and cream Kosher
for PES okay we have we have gotten more
questions about coconut this year and
last year it's a big deal Everyone likes
coconut nowadays it becomes real healthy
thing okay we have some information
about
coconuts um making nuts yeah
um that the cream the milk the oil is
shredded we do require a k kfp a kosher
for Passover
certification and we have a statement
about it even though many coconut items
oils are Kosher for passover at the
source since they are repacked in
facilities that do other non Kosher for
pass silver products without we cannot
assume responsibility for the PES status
we cannot recommend for PES um we did
because of the constant questions we did
look into our own Brands to see if
there's anything available and we have a
brand called coconut secret coconut
secret brand it's made by Leslie
Organics they make coconut aminos
coconut sap coconut sugar coconut flour
even with this a plain star we feel
comfortable recommending it for PES
without a without without a p symbol I
do not know of any coconut oil though I
I meant to ask somebody before this
webinar but I but if you if if um call
us yeah call us but I'm not sure that we
have something something available are
there any baby cereals yogurts that are
Kosher baby cereal we talked about baby
cereal in the book
um cereals I don't know if anybody's
making um yet kosher mean they meal they
mean like rice
cereal the year round rice cereal for
babies is not acceptable because it's
made on Kus equipment or may be made on
Kus equipment there is baby food of
course that's Kosher for PES with a p
certification you have First Choice
brand applesauce carrots sweet potatoes
is also Gerber Gerber brand some of
their
items um are are acceptable for babies
without any any uh P
certification uh we have that that's
certified by the OU and we we bring down
that information in our book as well
okay let's keep going on here that's the
K
cups David wants noce star hold all
soaps
shampoos are that means they are not
edible uh even to a dog and they would
be okay for PES what about hand creams
Cosmetics no that's not the star's
opinion that's why in the book we have
list of all the Cosmetics that do not
have any um helmet issues the hand
creams and so on we do have a list of
them and um there people often wonder
about that I mean you can't eat them
they're not food right you don't eat
soap I mean most people don't so why is
it a problem for PES and we answer that
question we have a whole article about
it um Heber put together an article we
have an article online um and this is
not a custom that was uh developed in
the year 2000 in the United States but
it goes back many hundreds of years um
the only thing I will say is that any
dry Cosmetics like a a
pencil or eyeliner a blush those even
according to those who are normally
strict about this Cosmetics rabman says
they can use any of those because it's
not it's not a liquid it's not a it's
not a cream it's a it's a it's a like a
powder those that's many Cosmetics I
mean I don't use Cosmetics but yes many
of them are like that so the dry the
blush and so on those kind of items any
of them are acceptable um and so that
you know that would be that's good to
know okay
um does raw almond butter need a c for
for PES there is one here I have
alond behind the U yeah see what this is
GRA my buy hold on this
is creamy almond nut butter is that raw
is it raw actually you're right it's not
raw it's not raw oh I see oh wait maybe
it is one second it says natural one
what does that mean natural usually
means raw let's
see it's very oily so that also means
raw yeah just almonds it's just almonds
so you think might be roasted though
might roasted it's hard to tell from you
can't just it's hard to tell from the
almonds statement Whata anyway yes the
answer is yes because this processing
it's a processed item the more process
something is the more likely it's going
to need a certification right in general
and on especially uh Stark Tech RAB
Chapan has put up the Quick Pick
personal list thank you very much saves
me the trouble of running through the
steps thank you Ron says silicons are an
artificial chemical class what is
involved that makes it require its
presence requires I'm not sure what he
means by artificial because silicone is
actually silicone is is a is a natural
occurring uh uh mineral but um it's not
the silicone that we're concerned about
it's what's used with the silicone as
it's used as a coating for paper that
presents the the PES problem so you're
correct it's not the silicone itself we
have papers that are silicone coated
that are Kos Passover it's something
that's used together with the Silicon in
this particular brand that was
problematic okay
um um
okay the olive oils we we discussed that
already okay the machine mods is
question here I'm I'm not 100% sure what
the question is so if you can call us at
41484 411 or email info@ stark. org our
busy email uh uh line we'll be able to
help you I hope arel says I think you
missed my question that it's possible
no that was the baby food question baby
food question we deal with it yeah okay
I'm sorry if we did miss it um from
personal experience Rick in Columbus
says cotton seed oil is a problem for
frying it splatters all over the kitchen
okay that's a reason not to use it and
use something else instead I
suppose um I saw Jeff says I saw
acceptable styles of fish food does star
k have any recommended Brands this is
your yeah yeah I I always say I'm the
starc pet Rabbi he's the pet Rabbi so
behind him is pet rabbi
um yeah we do get a lot of questions
about pets and and many people have dogs
cats fish ger balls you name yeah um all
sorts of of creatures rabbits um and we
put together the list that's in
available for no charge on our website
or in the list that we mentioned um as
far as fish food fish food often haset
in it that's really the basis of it um I
have not seen this list I would be
curious to see it if you can tell us
where where you did find it the only
ones that I found in in uh that do not
have humet were the
um they are long they're gel feeders
tetr tropical slow relase gel
feeders there's one called Tetra weekend
good for 5 days Tetra vacation 14 days
those are free um and then for goldfish
and tropical fish they can be given
tubular worms there says on the bottom
you can also get shrimp cubes right
right Frozen brine shrimp and Freez
dried worms without fillers you have to
be without fillers so there are some
things available these are good A lot of
people go away for PES so the TR the
slow feeders are good um if you go away
for for you know for PES you give them
the 14-day vacation one and that that's
fine but
only well the other option is one for
five days PES that's not long enough
extended PES off is all year for us r p
we started already like three months ago
that's true is about 3 months after the
star k year um uh so there there is some
acceptable fish food and if you have any
more we'd be happy to take a look at
that um if if if link what's that Stark
Tech has again okay posted the Stark
petful list thank you by Chapman um if
you have we get a lot of calls from
people who have food that is not on our
list a pet food that's not onist and um
usually we ask them to email us a link
to the ingredients so that we can check
the ingredients right that's usually the
EAS easiest way having the caller read
off the ingredients is usually not the
most efficient uh way some of the
ingredients are
not uh so easy to to read okay um is it
necessary to have a new hot plate for
PES instead of the one you use the rest
of the year I do recommend getting a new
Hot Plate because there are spills and
there helmet absorbed into the hot plate
it's like a right it's like a ble it I
suppose if you clean if you clean it um
and you cover it then
um is it safe to cover it that's a good
question then you're right may not be
check that out right check that out I
would actually you know with this
terrible incident that happened in in in
in FL um they were recommending that
people check their plates and I actually
looked at mine and it's not UL listed
which means that it's not it's not not
approved by this on the writer librator
so so I I we stopped using our half
plate because it's the wires frayed
actually and I also realized that mine
was made in 2003 that's quite old it's
11 years ago so I told I I I'm not going
to use mine anymore I would get a
different one that's that's that's
safe is there molasses and Maple
syrup Kosher for
P I think there is I saw maple syrup I
oh is this that's honey no honey but I
did see maple syrup I was in the store
yesterday I did see maple syrup there is
a brand of maple syrup that's Kos PES
molasses I do not know let's go to more
some of our our other items here RAB
bu um let's see what we have this is egg
mates of course the egg mates need a
Passover certification which they don't
always have so remember when you're
buying
make sure
it's you could make a mistake just
happens a lot of times remember that the
people who putting the products on the
shelves don't realize is not always the
mash in the store it could be somebody
who just picking up a product putting it
on the Shelf he doesn't know exactly you
know what it is he just told to put it
and he puts it in the wrong place we
should in general mention that you know
buyer and beware you should always look
at the label always check the labels cuz
many times you'll have a Passover
product which is a very similar lab
to a non Passover prodct and you w
realize it until it's too late sometimes
people buy pick up something that's not
Kosh for Passover and then they come to
the Passover aisle and they realize oh
this is the one I want and they put that
down and pick up the other one this
these moas the egg mes always have a
statement uh somewhere it's not that
prominent here which is a little bit of
an issue but they do have the statement
according to the ra these egges can be
used in a time of need by the ill or
elderly person they cannot be used used
to fulfill the Mitzvah of mat the
Passover seder so it's you know it's a
little bit hidden that statement we
would prefer it to be more prominent but
that is correct that um that generally
ashkenazim healthy ashkenazim do not eat
Eggman um of course we have the kin Ware
Passover of a buyer but we're not going
to go into that at month now time is
getting short canned products need to be
certified canned vegetables things like
that the Passover yes you're setting me
up yes can vegetables do need do need to
be certified for PES this is again a
shop right canned um cranberry jelli
cranberry sauce it's a shopr band brand
with a Passover
certification um and again if you're
looking to save some some money that
should be uh a cheaper price than than
some of the other brands um we have here
we have here tuna fish California
Delight which is star k I know it's a
little bit hard to see but star k
P certified it is also star s certified
so we have to oh for the star s what is
this Stars you brought it up okay I did
stars is is the star certification for
Safar we try to certify items that will
be useful for the people of sporadic
descent um which means that there
sometimes they have some stringencies as
in the cooking the bishell you
lenes
on Passover they have some leniencies
the rest of the year if you see Star s
then it's it's just a stricter standard
um it has um it might it might be B meat
or it might be
Bish product that's a more strict level
on on Passover the
Stars can mean that there is a leniency
like for what like for kidos which
legumes like rice we do certify rice for
for Passover for for Safar I should note
that the rice that's on our list um
still even if it's certified as not
having any any PES issues for S but
there still a custom there is a custom
to check it through three times before
use and even on the Stars certified rice
that that custom still does does exist
um there is one that wasn't on our list
that for our I listeners may find useful
it's Kirkland
brand thaam Mali jasmine rice bearing a
star k does not require a p uh it's a
product of Thailand that is acceptable
as well it's a that's a Costco uh brand
thaam Mali jasmine rice bearing a star k
product of Thailand is okay without
without a p for Safar and then we have a
whole bunch of other things we have
salads peccant brand um these are all
humus things like that humus which
normally would be if you're realy you
can actually have like humus with almost
like a pizza type thing cuz the mat
there they some have soft mat and then
we have Frozen beans green beans cut
green beans all all these things are
available in Israel it's easier for a
stic person P but in America we are
trying to do what we can uh to get uh to
have things available for
Safar okay what about freeze dried worms
for fish as every wants to know the
freeze dried worms for fish are
acceptable with no fillers they
shouldn't have anything else it should
be pure pure worms pure worms yeah
that's the star w m right um there isn't
any problem buying buying them or having
them even though you keep a coast your
home as long as you keep it away from
your food uh that's no problem at all
cupcake uh uh paper holders they need a
certification all year start P guide
last year said so but this year it
doesn't this Dove is very astute RAB Bay
because we did change our policy Dove is
trying to I don't know what he's trying
to zap us over here well no we changed
our policy we change policy we are more
lenient now on cupcake holders because
we found uh due to our research that
cupcake holders in general are not coded
with anything that's problematic from a
cous perspective for during the year for
during the year but during so that
that's that's very helpful that
get that policy through because the the
uh the kosher ones are not that not that
readily available there's one brand that
has there's a couple we we certify a few
there there's some but there's there
there aren't many M um Reynolds has on
there we have a brand called if you care
um which is which is available in some
uh they can Whole Foods and places like
that um but for pesak we found that
there could be some uh starch issues and
things like that that might be
problematic for PES so that's why we say
that the and you have some brands also
paper Chef we do have some that are
available for PES yes in the book we
list in our book okay but that's really
good Dove is following our our our
policies okay Jeff says if it's not you
elic I would recommend getting rid of it
um I don't think he means the cupcake
holders right he means the uh the hot
plate and yes I'm going to take Jeff's
recommendation get rid of my hot plate
that's not you were listed
um uh Ron has a question no that was
without the Silicon again okay not for
question for the webinar okay Zev says
hot plates are not designed to stay on
for great length of time but crockpots
are designed to stay for many hours okay
okay so I guess he's saying that the
crockpots are are are safer in that way
um I I I guess the hot plates people the
the the the religious surface to keep
the religious people keep them on for
many hours and he's saying that they
weren't really designed for that I yeah
I keep them on on I like using it in the
summer because it's I don't put my oven
one
keep it downstairs whatever okay that's
a safety
concern um how do we get email reminders
about these webinars okay uh send us an
email to info@ stark. org asking to be
put on the list and we will do that
right away and you will get a reminder
it's generally the last Wednesday of
every month at noon at uh at this web
address and if you have any questions
that we're not answering and we're not
getting to please give us a call for
4110 um goldber the ladies at the front
desk are looking for for for more calls
they're not it's like bored these days
and info@ stark. org you know we do get
thousands and thousands of calls and we
and emails this time of year but uh you
know we try to get to everyone everyone
is important Elise says is wild rice
considered kidus it is not a real rice
yes it is not really rice let me look in
our kitous list
that's a good
question what does that mean wild rice
is not really rice it's not a type of
rice it's it's not botanically uh a type
of rice but um but it looks like rice
doesn't it I don't
know let's see it's on page 68 I don't
get
it let's see if it's on our it's not on
our kidne is
list um I don't know would have to look
into that
okay
um Jeff is is telling us some uh
information about the UL testing Ben
says if you check Romain letters three
times using the
method in the star k guide can you just
put the leaves over a light
box okay I'm not sure what I don't get
the question exactly um but it does it
does remind me that we put out an alert
the uh last
week that Roma lettuce and iceberg
lettuce uh a very popular brands Dole
Fresh Express uh available all over the
country with a star k in at in the date
code where they passed our inspection
and put a star in the day code Roma is
tending to be more buy sometimes so less
times with a pass our inspection but
iceberg is almost always okay it's
because it's it's tight and almost you
can't use Iceberg really for for MO no
right I'm not talking about the M I'm
talking about the the the the bug issue
so we have found that because of the
changing seasons right now uh even the
iceberg is having issues and you you you
will not you may not find the star K on
Iceberg people sometimes just pick up
Iceberg and they just put it in their
cart without even looking at it um you
should be checking the iceberg and the
Roma and all the lettuces for the for
the symbol um near the date code why is
it near the date code because it's part
of the inkjet it's not on it's not
pre-printed on the bag because that
would mean everything is kosher they
they they Mash only allows them to
inkjet it when it is acceptable um does
does not need a p for PES though it does
need a p for PES p and the uh the Romain
is uh like you said could be used you
could use it for with P you could use it
for for your in case other people have
that question about checking the Roma
lettuce if they go on to the website you
can look at the video
of how it's done Rabbi tler shows you
how to do it with a a um what are those
um thrip cloth a thrip cloth thank you a
thrip cloth which make I did that last
year with with um with Roma lettuce and
I found it to make it much easier uh to
check and much more efficient um so you
might want to take a look at that so Ben
says it check it says to check up to
three times if you can't uh if it's not
coming clean after three
times uh then we say you shouldn't use
that lettuce so I I think he's asking
then if if it didn't if it didn't come
clean after three times should you check
it over a light box and then check each
Leaf individually for bugs that's a fair
question and that requires some we have
to think about that one if you can email
us or call us we'll be happy to talk to
you about that um R berer we we're
almost coming to the end yeah we're
running out of time let's let's talk a
little bit more about some of these
items here we have the alond milk I want
to get to almond milk it has a Passover
certification on this one it's the only
one I know that is available as such and
there are almond milks that um that are
in our book that uh that are recommended
to be humus free but they may have
kidneys in them they might be made Inus
equipment um they're not ideal so if you
can get this one if you want almond milk
this one is much preferred the one with
the p is actually koser for PES if you
you know you have a health issue and you
need almond milk and you can't get this
one or doesn't you know it's not the one
that you need then we have a list of of
of of milks that are available um that
information came from the OU and that
are acceptable for people who are in
such a situation what else do we have
here RAB buer um you want to talk about
coffee Coffee R you mentioned a little
bit right this is Sanka Sanka coffee
with the this is s coffee with the with
the PES certification this is instant
coffee so what's the issue with instant
coffee
you want to tell us what why does it
need a PES of certification well coffee
in general needs PES certification
because um number one coffee beans are
roasted and there are times where
they'll roast
um other let say grains possibly in the
same rooster that they'll do the coffee
beans and then that could be an issue
for PES um but the instant is more well
more of an issue inant because well the
way the instant are made um there could
be equipment issues because that's made
with um uh um the um the equipment
that's used to make instance could be
used to make other things as well so
that could be problem because there
there are a lot of ground coffees that
are acceptable in the books but there's
not very many instan right and then
decaf is an issue because of the um
because there are certain types of
decaffeination the processing that it
could use certain alcohols which could
again potentially be a problem for PES
mhm okay
so so you have to get a Passover
certification
okay
um um Jay Hill says meat what is the
issue with kidneys that the meat has to
be washed
off how do we know which package Meats
had that problem before it was cut apart
by a processor or a butcher
store I don't know that me where where
did we say that meat has to be washed
off our statement on meat is that raw
meat and
poultry uh is considered to be kosher
for Passover all year unless it's
compromised in your own house somehow
but if maybe but but unless unless it's
ground ground we say do does require a
pce of certification so I'm not sure
kind of of a of a um antibacterial that
they use in some Meats right that that
could be a problem right but where did
we say that you have to wash it you
don't know where that information is
coming from I don't think it's coming
from the
Star um so I'm not sure about that
okay Rabbi B I want to do something over
here that I know you're going to like
um we do have we do have over
here I'm curious about
this one of our special polls R buer
this is I made this just for you for me
mhm do you like R buyer yes or no
question I try to cut costs by buying
items that don't require a special pass
certification and yes I try to buy those
when I can or no I prefer to always look
for the passive certification so I want
to see what what what our listeners are
are doing are they um are they trying
looks like most people like to spend
money for no good reason no that's not
what it looks like right it looks like
most people are trying must know my wife
are trying to buy the the items that do
not require
certification um you know there not I'm
not belittling it there are there
there's definitely you know people many
people would say I just don't want to
worry about it it's Passover it's it's a
strict it's it's worth the money you
know I rather you know I'd rather spend
the money than worry about you know
having an issue um that's certainly a a
uh a possibility you know many people
would would Tove money there are people
that don't buy any of these products
there are people that don't buy
pass everything is made from scratch you
buy your raw your ra you know your
vegetables your fruits your meat you
know you make everything from from
scratch that's also a a a possibility
that probably would save money as well I
imagine right I would think so um you
know there are definitely uh people who
there are people who who buy package
products but won't eat out you know they
don't they don't eat out of their house
they won't go to a hotel they won't go
to someone else's someone else's house
they feel that you know they know what
they're doing in their house but other
than that they don't know
um okay it does look like from our
respondents um most of the people are
are are trying to
buy items that will save them money is
there anything else here that we can
help them with r buyer that will that
does not require U certification and
this is something that
gluten-free uh
noodles these are what's in here they
didn't have these when we were kids I
know potato starch noodles I wonder how
it tastes but uh again okay that's not
an item that you could buy here's an
item everybody buy that uh is when I was
a kid we used to eat these Barton's
almond kisses remember that I don't
actually I remember the Box the Box the
metal box to it it was empty the metal
box okay it's not it's not it's it is
certified for Passover it's not so
people always save those basses it
wouldn't be a uh you know star k product
you could not be it could not be brought
at a star k event because it's not but
for people who don't keep I think this
is like a staple sometimes yes I've seen
it in many Bart many home Al and kisses
Barton I don't haven't seen their
products too much but this one is is
still around um okay let me close this
hope it's not from when they were making
it when we were kids well bu there there
are significant amount of people who are
always looking for the passive
certifications that's interesting as
well and uh so it's well we at this the
certification company thank you most of
the most of the of the of the uh of the
people that were answered are trying to
save money which is or what would have
expected um we had a question here just
one last question is foxes you bet is
that kosher for Passover and the answer
that question yes he I like that and and
and the answer is
that um you bet you bet it is available
for PES with a Passover certification
there are those at a par and there are
those at the dairy
non um I actually was in a store and I
saw um I saw it on the on the on the
Passover shelf and it was not the one
that was for Passover and I mentioned it
to the manager and they said they're
going to change it do they make it
during the year yes they make no it's
not they make foxes you bet chocolate
syrup but you should should know that
where you're looking for the Passover
certification is not on the label it's
on the on the cap it's it's for the UB
bet for the ubet it's ink jetted it's a
it's it's a special like plastic cap um
um plastic piece that goes around the
cap that has the Passover certification
so if you're just looking at the bottle
you're just going to see a k or KD if
you're looking for the Passover
certification you got to look at at the
top that's where it is um okay I'm sorry
you don't need a you need a
certification for B water Bott water
does not need that's the question we get
mostly during the intermediate days
Passover and guys are like somewhere
bottled water does not require
certification if it just has um water
and minerals it it's not necessary to be
certified for Passover that is something
that uh you could find it certified for
Passover and then you know pay more but
really it does not require thank you
every everybody for listening I want to
thank you Rabbi berer for joining us
today thank you for coming Rabbi Chapman
and Debbie Rosenstein for helping us on
the technical side these webinars and
all our webinar webinars are are
archived and you can find them online at
kosher class.org or on our uh Vimeo

we send out uh telling you about these
classes is it's at the bottom of the
email it has a link to to all the uh the
archive classes last month we did a
webinar about I'm trying to remember
what was it last month was that about
fraud was it it was the one about co co
kosher fraud uh fraud in the kosher
Marketplace it was an interesting one
you can you can view it
