what's noon what so and what's different this year what needs a half-shirt more importantly what doesn't need action so you can save some money on right now that everything that that is for face up needs actually even though we're the business right right right it's true we tried to be honest about it and tell you what you can buy without a half year was what it requires that's March 2017 if you can disguise your voice a little bit meanwhile we'll have this set up over here we have a big chat screen over there um so let's start with one of my favorite topics really is his urns I really about it and but one of our fascinating yeah here I earn Zhan Chavez you don't find it interesting how do you use their only child everyone to their own yeah okay so it's one of our engineers brought up the following problem for us they you know you go to your shul on Chavez story we have achieves or whatever you go and they don't have these like big urns you know ten ten gallon errands and and what they're doing now is they're attaching them to the water supply right so nobody ever had to trouble themselves to take their internet I mean old-fashioned Shiva learn perfected a little rickety fancy-schmancy things are moving moving on so they're attaching now the problem is it's a good all week but on Shabbos when you take water out of it well I mean it works like that during the week - it's not a problem the water refills itself right matically so what are you doing when you're when you take water out you're letting cold water in which is a problem of cooking the water on Chavez right and people don't realize that when they set them up and it needed to be taken care of so there's a way to take care of that is have a separate no well you can have a bypass switch installed that's easier or what you can do is close the cold water intake I guess that's the easiest thing to do right so that when you when you open the wanted one sits there was once it's gone it's gone so right once it's empty it's empty it won't refill but there's another part to that and that is you have to you have to also take out some to let's say 2 cups of water before Chaves what that does is one second okay you understand what you're doing here so you mean it's fill fill it up to the top on their Shabbos you're filled automatically doesn't it yeah that's right this feels right they'll feel Brunnstrom there's times oh they're right you turn off the what turn off the cold water if the cold water you take a cup and then take out two cups of water why from the speak again two cups out you don't have to stick your hand in the reason for that is is that we're afraid on Shabbos if you'll if you'll take out any water so no cold water will come in but what you're doing is you are triggering a a switch that that an electronic switch that wants to bring the cold water but then they will it won't be able to but you're still triggering electronics by taking out water so what you do is a sensitive so what you're doing is pulling the water below the level of the sensor around Erev Shabbos right so that you won't do that on Chavez so two cups is below the scent is enough we know that that's below the other right that would only speak general speaking that would be the way to do it so yeah I guess I guess to what you want to do if you want to avoid this question and you don't want to be the last guy to take hot water not only the tank or something know what help you go down say look any water left oh you mean because there's no water coming in yeah so no you're done okay well you can buy bigger Jakub is asking is it hot Moana to wrap and turn with the towel before shabbos padded insulated covers yes it is a problem of covering your Chaves what you need to do if you want to cover it is make sure that this is tea cozy analytic what's cool we have to get rid of Franco to discuss the English it's a blanket further right so you have to make sure that the blanket or some people use a paper bag or whatever is not is significantly uncovered let's say towards the bottom so you put it up on top you cover much of it but there's significant amount that's uncommon otherwise it says it's a problem of hot month if you do before Chavez you put your your towel or your blanket or your paper bag over there it is a problem it has to be that's to be a significant amount that is not not covered on air Shabbos yeah so that's the that's the new problem with the urn there's the old problem with the urn which is the the site level that shows you how much water you have in the urn the cycle yeah there's a glass a lot of the times is that what's called efficiently yes the site level yeah fancy term so you know I'm talking very expert right yeah so so they so those are an issue if they're because they don't feel necessarily with hot water so when you take out some war they're on Chavez you were actually mixing the water there's that little thing on the outside where the water look and it goes down as you take right well how does it go when it goes down it's letting some of that water to you a couple long about more than that cold water I'm not cold more than along with onion it or not what are you making that yeah that's a long Nicole or a long discussion I really want to get into you know this back and forth but the way to avoid that totally is there's a little hole at the top of that tube to let in air so that the one that can go down what's not on call okay right so if you take a piece of tape and you cover that a little hole the water won't go down it's physics because there's no air coming into the water can't go anywhere you also don't know how much water is in your own but that's you know that's a little bit of a problem okay okay so moshe is asking that on Chaves morning you want to warm up your column so you want to put it on the crock pot okay fair enough can you wrap a towel around the sala completely go you must leave a little bit open it's the same problem but you have to leave it a little if you have to leave it open so that it's not totally covered otherwise it's a problem called hasta maana on Shabbos it's a Burns then we've got another question on the buyer that we were looking into and I think we got these questions about fish because the DAF Yomi was learning a couple weeks ago all about this among industry signs for kosher fish right so we can start getting a lot of calls about it and one of the it was waking up time with my gosh I woke up like oh my gosh kosher fish so there's a fish in South Africa which is not familiar to us so much called a keen clip okay i am g KL IP king pinklet right it's a popular fish down there yeah you know it is okay Robert Chapman has visited orphans in South Africa right your wife is from South Africa so you you're saying that you have had it you have eaten have you eaten it I don't remember when I did I've heard of it while I was there I remember the being of the question so the basement of Johannesburg allows it and and and Rama Heineman was supposedly quoted as saying that it said that it's a kosher fish it's a little bit like apparently from the pictures it looks a little bit like an eel yes instead again we saw the pictures of it but really bad looking finish the final looking fish but that isn't really nothing to do with the conscious of it what the fish looks like to you in looks on touch of fish bites and by its shape we judge a fish in these it needs to have fins and scales and every fish tomorrow says it has scales has fins so really only needs to have scales and it really doesn't need to have a lot of scales it needs to have really just one scale would be sufficient so that's really the question does it have the right kind of scale does it have right right an eel actually has something that looks like scales it does yeah but it's not considered scales because when you pull off a scale you pull you off the skin and you get to the flesh right that the Rambam says and Chicana says that it's not considered to be the Rama says it's not considered to be a proper scale the scale needs to come off without any skin right okay so it should be pretty simple this fish have scales like that or not but it's it's it's become a big question between the South African based in the Cape Town based in Australia is rarely posting and the hour behind the man was pulled into it as well and the question that is as follows really it the scales are very thin and difficult to see but the scales again have no requirement of thickness of them or the amount of it but they think to be covered with some membrane or something else covers them but you pull off that membrane you see you see the scales and then you pull them off and underneath is another piece of skin or skin so it's not part of the flesh so it's a good scale that's the argument of those that say that is kosher those that don't like it you know doesn't have scales you know it became a very big big decision be very easy to determine it should be easy to do they're much like a really super hard to catch it's hard to it's hard to find the scales for people who are shown it the scales seem to admit afterwards that there are that there are scales can't tell how far escaped down from John exactly so every person on doesn't know is that like I haven't shown each other the fish is that one's ever went away they haven't shown one wanted to go to the other with the fish to to say hey here's our dish to Jack around Johannesburg is not on the coast take 10 years you can have to unlock the coast and break up the cake down the river so what happened with your a behind me being quoted there was a business article that that really widely discussed about this topic and in there a behind the mother's quoted as saying that the he went to Chile Chile Chile and he found Jilly Jilly okay and he found a fish there the Chilean kangri oh and that one he examined and he said there's a kosher fish okay so in this article they make a comparison between this Chilean fish and this king clip and they say argue that's the same fish but really and that's why the person who read this article was sort of mislead to thinking about behind him and permitted the king clip but he wasn't talking about the king clip and we asked him and he said you know he has to see it let's see that fish and he wants to check it he's not going to make a what we call the true Chatel comparison because that one had the one in Chile a had scale so therefore the one he's not going to say that so therefore he won't we one that we really that's how we left it we want to be able to get a fish in here and check it for scales now the importing fish in the United States you know you can't just yes we can't ask our Chapman the next time your visits to bring one bring one in if not it's not legal you have to have that I don't think it's brought commercially it's not brought to you no I don't think so as far as I know it's not a big big seller here so yeah we have to get somehow get one and then we'll be able to check out online or something or something over there no you have to check it you have to check it by it because it's difficult having someone do it and we can be watching well okay so we want to be able to see themselves so that's you you're coming for a like a road trip or something I want my heritage South Africa and of trying to make it around the world I found an article do any personally no it's okay actually we got a call about we got an email about that Kim click the email or wanted to know also about the blue marlin fish and I don't know it doesn't look like a swordfish right I think that's what we had told the thing for fishes at all we don't consider sorta just because you're right this is a question we don't we don't accept it and I think we told him that the blue marlin was similar to the swordfish and he had a complaint about that that it's not really similar he wanted us to look into it again which we didn't have a chance to do yet so I got willing bill to look into that the blue marlin fish for him um let hope that you'll join us we wanted to mention them I think we talked about via coffee at 7-eleven right about you a little bit buying coffee at 7-eleven someone brought up but there's a new system right so there someone actually called and said that they wanted to buy coffee at 7-eleven and they okay looks like you look ready I'm not telling you a joke here they wanted to get coffee at 7-eleven and they and they the coffee whatever apparatus over there the machine that to get the coffee out of so it happens to give out it dispenses regular coffee decaf coffee and flavored coffee and we didn't know this but apparently it all comes out of the same nozzle and it's all put in the same and the same Brewers that through the regular coffee unflavored also brew the flavored coffee and the fiber coffee is not necessary labor clothing is not necessarily kosher certified so we that was a little that was a new thing for us to hear that we didn't know that especially since my experience has always been with with stores and companies that sell coffee that's like their claim to fame as their coffee they do not want to mix flavored coffee with non flavored coffee that's a big no-no you don't want to do that but apparently it's not such a big deal which is weird because the coffee purists right they don't go to 7-eleven the push comes to shove you gotta settle megiddo you know you want a cup of regular coffee you don't want it to taste like frou-frou coffee you know that's not not for the purists down there so I know that we have a company that flavors coffee makes roast coffee so the flavoring part of the of the setup is like completely separate from the regular plain because they don't want the two two to mix so it happens to be you know we this of checking with 7-eleven and that the flavors that are we have a there's a from 7-eleven owner here in town okay he owns a couple of 7-elevens here in Baltimore and he said that the flavors that they happen to have now in 7-eleven are all happens to be they're all kosher a real certified mm-hmm but that could change that could change we don't know now 7-eleven just my experience has been with 7-eleven in general that they do try and make sure that all of their products as much as it can are kosher at least the obviously got the hot dogs and things like that but the drinks and those kinds of things typically will have some sort of certification on them I know they've tried that in the past but first comes a shop we we basically are continuing our policy when it comes to coffee at places that are serving non-kosher we don't know what they're with with the flavors is that if a person is travelling so that we who usually say that they could purchased a regular coffee they could get the flavored coffee if they know that it's happens to be kosher but if you're at home in your home turf then might be something you wanna you might want to avoid to avoid barring it where it's coming with the other flavors there's another problem with this place is right and that they may wash the right so if you check out the upcoming conscious currents so we have an update on that oh you have an update on the coffee situation yeah commercial well the problem is that they may wash the modular carafes and rasa dance together with a heavy weight did not kosher with utensils that have been used with not kosher right so that's anyway why we say you shouldn't run by a coffee from such a place when you're on the road if you're in like a end if you're on the pinch so this is another reason there's another reason maybe to avoid it right but it's not such a big problem right because the coffee flavors a non kosher it's our mayor to find this coffee business the dairy flavor that's possible right but most of the time they're bottle and and not such a big it's not it's not a big problem it's not the right about right okay so I see y'all ear wants to ask us so I'm going to see if I can click on your get your ears let's see if you can if you can join us on by our voice system okay let's see meanwhile Yakko says the story with not buying coffee in a place that makes food on-premises because they'll wash equipment together with trade for food equipment like Starbucks 7-eleven is this the home run I heard that if you're on the road it's okay which I don't understand if it's also so yes that's what we're saying gonna be the article we have a lot of information about that on our site and with upcoming article but the bottom line is yes it is basically a homeless agency because of all the different this soap and maybe the temperature doesn't affect it and all the different reasons what that's why we have said only to do it when you're on the road which is basically saying is permitted but be strict about it unless you are traveling and you need it neither have the coffee people need to have a coffee for sure yeah yeah so that's yeah yeah I was asking can you post it the article would do just that by eight you pay for the soda before shot this and they would give you a little ticket and then on Chavez who would be able to go in and trade your ticket in for for for soda during the meal right so yes so that's uh that's how long that's allowed you can taking food basically from emerging is allowed so so I'm taking there's a lot of explicit hello cook that taking food from a merchant Jewish or not Jewish would be okay as long as you don't you know discuss the price with him you arrange before you'll turn right afterwards that's that's that explicit a lotta that you're allowed to do that Sharia law with coffee it could be it could be different what are the issues with coffee first of all you're gonna take the coffee yourself right are you activating anything electronic what kind of system yes I don't know maybe they use a big ten gallon and then we talked about before then yeah refills or something how they did refill okay right but so you have to see whether you're doing anything by taking by taking the coffee the fact that the coffee is brewed on Shabbos I don't think that that would be a problem because they're not doing it for you they're doing it there's not a lot of Jews walking into 7-elevens taking coffee on Chavez right so so it wouldn't be brutal for you to be brewed for the majority of going and that would be in that sense it would be okay there could be a problem walking into 7-eleven on Chavez yes people figured out most workers don't walk into 7-eleven on jobs people think that you're going there to buy something it's not a common thing to set up from before Shabbos right so people would think that you're going in to purchase yourself any bail for you could be other think about you is what you think about I don't think would be the first choice talking about anyway I'd like somebody that you know the rest of the story is asking okay let's see let's see further over here is it yeah here wants to know is there any change to the status of buying coffee at Starbucks locations everybody they want to know what you're running that audience are you going to allow us to buy the coffee but it's not everything me out then what's gonna read the art this is our Republic has a right to know they're there they're the only change that we had the major change we have the Starbucks was was really in the summer or months ago when we decided we had a pulled back right from our allowing many Starbucks products that the frappuccinos and all those things because we had been given access to the Starbuck ingredient lists and we knew what exactly was in all of these drinks mmm so we were comfortable saying they were fine but since then for whatever reason Starbucks decided to pull back and and and not share that information with us any longer right so we can not recommend many of the you know more complicated things that they sell there so basically our policy at Starbucks and at any non coke any any coffee vendor that sells non-kosher food that has this this question of possibly sharing equipment during the washing up process so we recommend that you do not buy coffee from those places unless you're in a situation you're away from home you're traveling whatever the case may be so then you can come on to certain you know leniency is in the ha'la'tha to do so so that what there was a time when they were these standalone kiosks with Starbucks that didn't have great sandwiches but really we know they also okay so since the summer hasn't been any update that's basically that's basically change cough I'm using yeah and then or explanation of the reasons behind what we saying in the article okay it's a little more detailed in the border okay let's move on to another topic earlier people were asking us about what's a trend now it seems to have these cinnamon palace college that are sweeter at least here it is yeah right I think it's a popular item I mean yeah okay we have hell at home that's that's pretty sweet to my wife next caller mmm-hmm that tastes pretty sweet okay it's not quite right so it's these these these collars were called cinnamon college so so these scholars are called cinnamon collars and it leads people to believe that you can use them for your Shabbos meal right and that they are they are Hamas II coming back to these Misano scholars so so the problem is if they are too sweet we hold that bread that is sweet can actually turn into a mezzo nose and it's like hey basically now the spider my much more strict about it they hold it like any bit of sweetness would make it non Tomasi and Ashkenazim um take a different approach has to be pretty sweet in order to measure stardom do they have to use like water column pretty no eggs in their eggs is a problem and many of them use watercolors right without any eggs right clean mm-hmm plain bread right but so let's talk about the Ashkenazi Ashkenazic opinion is that has to be pretty sweet right so these colors we tasted and these particular ones that were here and they were pretty sweet and they are Mazama so it's basically cake now technically could you have cake you take two cakes let me take two boxes and put them at your shall be stable and make up mostly on them you would need to make a moat see because it's part of your meal now and it's elevated to a status that you have to make MOC but yes that's so that's that is a part of the issue but most people generally do not want to make hameau tea on to cakes they don't it's not shava statements they're nice so they don't want to do it so you know so these Mazama scholars are the same why are raisins cause they are different aren't they generally viewed as a moat see Neal is asking raisin cars are different because basically the taste is of bread and they just have a little bit of raisin so now it's subjective it's very subjective I mean my fella I don't know like I said most scholars have a figure in them oh come on every is not really going to be the question when you're adding all these different ingredients then you want to check it out let's move on to another topic which was just very briefly we had the question of the of the budget as I remember my wife's grandmother Allah Allah Shah uncle was a real honest-to-goodness Yeti from Frankfurt online okay so they have like a certain their Shabbos table was also like you know very German so like when we would serve like a sweet kögel something like that so she was completely not familiar with that whole concept of eating something like that during the meal no sweets during nowhere it was like dessert so obtained for a person like that would they have to make with a special product during the meal if they would eat it no cuz I said like dessert so I'm having like okay but even if it was dessert you're gonna make a brother I'm generally on occasional eating the cake on cakey desserts you don't make a Bravo and nothing of the free thing to make it would have to be something maybe Shaco or maybe a fruit or something but that no it wouldn't it was only covered no right youngin wants to ask you need two slices of pizza we're getting off to another topic to slice of pizza is Kavya suet suited to washing bench how much pizza the after wash and that's a whole nother can of worms [Laughter] they might do that Starkey official policy is that two slices plus a side like french fries or something is enough the water is that a bench is that a large fries or a medium fries seven and a half yeah it's it's it's an idea it doesn't have to be french fries something on the side is considered to be a meal that's okay yes I gotta do that because that's what used to serve pizza right lots of Friday this is for lunch that okay pizza into this anyway okay so an LP that would never be right there are many people who hold many posts can will hold that you wash even on any amount of pizza but this official start gate policy is two slices and and a little bit of something else that also brought up the question about about the marijuana right that we would not give a half-shirt to to marijuana even medical marijuana you don't want to get involved with that but you you you you're a couple of we and we actually write it we we do certify some CBD gum gum right which is CBD is that is that part of the hemp plant of the hemp plant which is really marijuana and hemp are basically the same thing I think there's no the same kind of plan to take place so it's that part of the thing that doesn't that doesn't have the it's it's missing it's the part that makes people alone the cannabis it doesn't it doesn't make you doesn't make you it doesn't make your heart it's really nice so people asking us about you know CBD products generally they're a little bit complicated products they wouldn't need a half-share yeah but they wouldn't they wouldn't need a certifications come contains that but it's not a good instrument it's not gonna make you high so there's a problem they say well you tried something I did I tried I tried a few yeah it's supposed to be actually be like a Payton help you with help with like inflammation if like that ok one more topic just to go after something else we I got a gotten a call from fellow who's in the Navy and he wanted I was telling about this he wanted a letter saying that he couldn't cut his sideburns and beard and he was a Jewish fellow and he had a problem with it and he wanted letter from us then the Navy would allow him so I said look I said I don't know you know maybe you should get that from your rabbi who knows who is it doesn't have a rabbi I said fine I can certainly write you a letter stating what they what I'm what the requirements are the Jewish requirements I don't you know know you or know who you are but I can write you a letter if that will be good for you good just email me what exactly you would like us to do a half mil Muslims have the same question in the US Navy they don't use I don't know so so he emailed me he actually wanted letter not only about his sideburns the pace he wanted a letter saying he's not allowed to cut any of the hair on his face that we'd be able to grow over six-foot ears I wrote him back saying you know a lot of my rap my friends do not have any beards at all because you're not allowed to shave with them with a razor but using an electric shaver is in America at least most many posts can most folks can hold that it's okay and then there's a survey most strict about it but I could not write you a letter that you know that you need to have a beard because you can't use a really like your electric shaver so right but you know it's interesting when you just point out we get we get calls emails from all over we get prison a lot of times these calls for the prisoners and even from sailors or soldiers or sometimes they kind of want to use some religious requirement to flaunt the rules you're saying he didn't really care what it wasn't like he was like you know such a dyed-in-the-wool I'm gonna grow my beard or whatever it's because he wants to like you know thumb his nose at Authority a little bit this way of doing it can be that I know that's happening with prisoners I know they're doing sometimes right we do get a fair amount of questions from prisoners but what's the work really doesn't there amount of prisoners who need our services now right we haven't webinar about it would be interesting to go back and remember Chris well we haven't thrown a Chris Ville here in Maryland we had a whole program mm-hmm where they were actually getting real honest-to-goodness culture feel I think that it is still in effect we don't give a Hatcher on prisons but we set up the guidelines it's a new frontier right well there are dark a prison there are there are conscious agencies that give a hampshire on food that goes to certainly concern prisons they do give action we don't do that here because they didn't want to go to that level it's very expensive it was a my son not too long ago well maybe a few years ago when there was a prisoner a from person who was a prisoner in New York and somehow or another he managed to finagle permission to have his son's Bar Mitzvah because he couldn't come because he was in jail but he had his sons my Mitzvah in the prison okay caterer was able to yeah yeah there are certain prisons that will allow you to do that so what we did here in Maryland was not that we have a hatch around the prison or even that it's kosher food sealed meals none of that all it is is that we gave them guidelines we gave to prison guidelines about what kosher prisoners would be interested in having and any prisoner who requests that that's what he's given now there's no much sealed meal no there's no much if there there's no but that's the best that they were willing to do I mean it's not under our certification we just they put it into their guidelines just like anything else we never had I have a company out in Tennessee and most of their business is providing prisons with like ready-to-drink like is it Cooley all different kinds of cool aids and okay and they make and they're like you know they're four to five because the vitamins or whatever and that's a big business for them and they wanted to have sure hmm and we do them and all that stuff goes to prisons right and all throughout the Middle America right so so you know for that level are you talking about drinks I mean they're gonna buy some drink and it doesn't cost them more to borrow your drink usually probably the problem probably the company eats the cost another fast and long it's not that expensive so Bank you know that really and overall it's really what is is driving the growth of culture in America in that present know is that if you have to stock something anyway that's a core you know if if a slight market Evan Goldberg market has to stock anyway cereals so they might little stock the kosher ones they don't cost more they just can't good yeah and and and no so they want to buy Moshe cereals so now all the people are buying that store the thousands of them are all buying coaches cereal just because they have a hundred customers of the kosher right and not it in America that's how that's how that's it that really drives the growth I was noticing just not really on topic but I'm a traveling but if you go to the new at least here in Maryland and up the turnpike it's getting more and more the way they're building they're redoing all the rest stops okay so it's not like just like a simple rest up any work the couple of sick almost like a quick of airplane terminal and the food that's being offered there is a lot different it's not like candy bars just there's a little real food right and you could actually get real food now that's that's cooking certified women on the road you know yogurts and ice all horrible eggs and I mean not just snack the real fun honest-to-goodness food mmm I think I actually and we haven't even New York airports well we have this dark a okay meals there right I saw those hard-boiled eggs on the 95 okay I mean I'd rather have a candy prepared suddenly well yeah what the hard-boiled eggs need a extra most mostly for the cooking of the visual acumen and they oh you certified so it's an interesting thing to be able to buy that's an example of the explosion of kosher working out products out there good for us all right I want to thank everybody for joining and look forward to seeing you next month and Wednesday March 27
