For the holiday edition of Mishpacha, Ari Ehrlich and I had the privilege of going on a journey with the Jewish philanthropist Jay Schottenstein, who is known to us all from the Schottenstein Shas. We shared our impressions in the newspaper, but I want to tell you about one moment with Jay that, for me, is what made him such a special Jew. He told me about a meeting he went to with his father to see the Lubavitcher Rebbe. His father was taken in the prime of his life. The Lubavitcher Rebbe spoke to him as a young boy, as one speaks to a person who will run one of the largest clothing empires in the world; he was preparing him for the day he would step into his father's shoes. Jay tells me: "I looked into the Rebbe's eyes, the Rebbe spoke to me, and I understood he was doing something here, that he was preparing me for this." Shortly after, his father passed away from an illness and the entire empire fell upon him, and he decided to keep the eyes of the Lubavitcher Rebbe with him as they guided him in establishing the greatest Talmudic endeavor since the giving of the Torah. So moving!
