This week marks the yahrtzeit of Rav Dov Yehuda Schochet zt”l, a remarkable talmid chacham whose life stretched from the great yeshivos of prewar Lithuania to Basel, The Hague — and ultimately Toronto.A distinguished talmid of the roshei yeshiva of Telz, Rav Schochet later served as a rav in Basel through the Holocaust years and, after the war, became Chief Rabbi of The Hague and its surrounding district, where he helped rebuild Jewish life and established a yeshiva for survivors.In the early 1950s, he moved with his wife and ten children to Toronto, largely to provide them with a stronger Torah education.Here, his story took an unexpected turn.
