Daf 141
Rava says that one must send away the mother bird even if he needs the bird for another mitzvah, such as for the purification of a metzora.

The Gemara asks why a special passuk is needed to teach this. The mitzvah of purifying a metzora should not override both the negative and positive mitzvos involved in taking the mother bird.

The next Mishnah discusses someone who takes the mother bird while it is sitting on its young. Rebbe Yehudah says he receives malkus and does not send the mother away. The Chochomim say he sends the mother bird away and does not receive malkus.

Daf 139

The Mishnah taught that kodashim birds are exempt from shiluach hakein. The Gemara asks what case this refers to. If someone was makdish a nest in his house, it would already be exempt even before becoming kodashim, because it is considered mezuman – prepared and readily available. If the nest was hefker, he could not make it hekdesh because it did not belong to him.

A Baraisa learns several halachos of shiluach hakein from the pesukim. The words “shaleiach teshalach” might suggest that a person should go searching through mountains and hills to find a nest in order to perform the mitzvah. Therefore, the passuk says “ki yikarei” – when a nest happens to come before you. This teaches th

Daf 138

Peah has no fixed shiur min HaTorah, but the Rabbanan established that one should give at least one-sixtieth. This applies even to Peah in Chutz La’Aretz.

Rebbe Yochanan corrected Isi bar Hini for changing the exact wording of the Mishnah. He also stressed the tremendous kavod due to Rav, describing how he once sat seventeen rows behind Rav and could not understand the deep Torah being discussed between Rav and Rebbe.

The Gemara discusses different shiurim for Reishis HaGez. Rav’s shiur of a maneh u’pras can equal sixty sela, because here a maneh is forty sela.

The Kohen must receive five sela of usable wool, enough to make an Avnet. Dirt in the wool does not count towards the five sela

Daf 135

The eleventh Perek begins with the mitzvah of giving the first fleece to a Kohen. This applies in Eretz Yisroel and outside Eretz Yisroel, both during and after the Beis Hamikdash. It applies only to ordinary sheep, not to consecrated animals, and only when a person owns several sheep.

The gifts of the foreleg, cheeks and stomach are more stringent, as they apply to both cattle and sheep or goats, whereas the first fleece applies only to sheep.

Consecrated animals are exempt because the Torah says “your flock,” excluding animals belonging to Hekdesh. The Gemara explains that this is needed even for animals dedicated only for their monetary value, where shearing is forbidden only Rabbini

Daf 134
The Mishnah on Daf 132a taught that if someone bought a cow’s innards by weight, he must give the keivah to the Kohen, and can claim its value back from the butcher.

Rav explains that this is when the buyer weighed the meat himself. But if the butcher weighed it for him, hadin im hatabach – the Kohen can claim the keivah from the butcher as well.

The next Mishnah discusses a ger who owned a cow. If it was shechted before he converted, he is exempt from matanos. If it was shechted afterwards, he is liable. If it is uncertain when it was shechted, he is exempt.

Levi had no poor people to collect his leket. Rav Sheishess said that if no poor people are there, he may keep it.

The Gemara asks

Daf 133

The Matanos can be divided among different Kohanim, but each must receive a Nesinah Chashuvah – a respectable portion. Normally the Zero’a and Keivah go to one Kohen each, while the Lechayayim can be divided. With a large bull, even the Zero’a may be divided because each portion is still substantial.

Matanos should be eaten L’mashchah – in a distinguished manner, like royalty. Roasted with mustard is preferred, but if the Kohen prefers another preparation he may eat it that way. If he likes all methods equally, roasting is preferred.

A Kohen who simply does not know all the Halachos can still receive Matnos Kehunah. However, a Kohen who rejects or does not acknowledge one of the Avodos

Daf 132
Ulla would give the gifts of a Kohen to a Kohen’s daughter, even if she was married to a non-Kohen. Although her flour offering is treated differently from that of a male Kohen, this is because the Torah specifically says “Aharon and his sons.” The Gemara records a disagreement whether these gifts may be given to a Kohen’s daughter, and the halachah follows Ulla.

The Rabbis and Rebbe Eliezer disagree about an animal born from a male deer and a female goat. There is a doubt whether the father’s species is taken into account, which would make the offspring partly a deer and partly a goat. Rebbe Eliezer says that an animal which is only partly a goat is exempt from the gifts. The Rabbis s

Daf 131

The Gemara continues discussing Matanos Kehunah. If the Zero’a, Lechayayim and Keivah were eaten or destroyed before being given, a particular Kohen cannot normally demand payment because they are Mamon she’ein lo Tov’im – no individual Kohen can claim that the gifts were specifically his.

However, if the actual Matanah still exists, it must be given. The Gemara also discusses produce taken by the government: if it was taken to pay the owner’s personal debt, he must replace the required Terumos and Maasros because he benefited by using that produce to pay his obligation.

The main question of the Daf is whether a Levi must give Zero’a, Lechayayim and Keivah. The Torah says the Kohanim r
