Lag B’omer, Day of Unrivaled Joy
Rabbi Avraham HaLevi, a disciple of the Arizal, had the custom of reciting Nachem, a prayer of mourning for Jerusalem, every single day. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai appeared to the Arizal, and admonished him that his student should not have recited Nachem on Lag B’omer, the day of Rabbi Shimon’s passing. Now, Rabbi Araham Halevi recited Nachem every day, including the intermediate days of the festivals and Rosh Chodesh, yet he was only admonished for reciting it on Lag B’omer! This illustrates that Lag B’omer is a truly exalted day, which will be celebrated even after the coming of Moshiach.
