Expanding the Operation

Rabbi Gershon Mendel and Bassie Garelik had been married for just a few months when, in 1959, the Rebbe sent them to establish a Chabad presence in Italy. It was a daunting task in a time when the word “outreach” didn’t exist. Leaving their community behind to help bolster another, they shared a close correspondence with the Rebbe, often with extraordinary personal direction. And, with God's help, it wasn't long before the Rebbe could proudly share news of their tremendous success.
