R' Label Lam speaking for Chazaq - INSPIRING!
On Sunday night, February 14 2016, CHAZAQ presented a community wide event, featuring Rabbi Lamel Lam, who has delivered many lectures and is a well-respected rabbi and speaker. The event took place at the Beth Gavriel Center of Forest Hills and refreshments were served prior to the lecture. Rabbi Lam began by quoting a Mishnah that established three points; “Make yourself a Rav (teacher), acquire yourself a friend and judge everybody to the side of merit”. The first part refers to making yourself available to your Rav. He isn’t obligated to come to you and check if you have any questions! So, you have to find time and put an effort to communicate with him. Also, in the process of marrying off a child, one of the first questions asked by the other “party” is “do you have a Rebbe?” or “who’s your Rebbe?” A Rebbe is a source of guidance and sometimes even a tutor in Gemara and/or Halacha. When one becomes knowledgeable in his learning, he is “making himself a Rav.” It’s very important to have friends for multiple reasons. A friend can be a suitable partner to learn with. If your Rebbe assigns you to learn something, it’s much easier and better to learn it with a partner. If you want to exercise, go on a diet, or set up a goal for yourself, it’s great to have a friend to do it with or merely for support. Our third and final point is a powerful lesson; judge people favorably. So, what is the connection between these three points? Well, once you begin to judge people unfavorably, it is easy to speak Lashon Hara (gossip) about them, making it more difficult to find a Rav who will listen to you or a good friend. That’s why it’s crucial to judge people favorably.
