S&S Cheesecakes
Every Shavuos, we eat cheesecake. But behind this cheesecake is a story most people don’t know. S&S Cheesecake in Riverdale is one of the oldest cheesecake factories in America. Today it’s run by Yair, who married into the family and joined the business built by his father-in-law. But the story begins much earlier. As a child, the founder escaped Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport. His childhood was ripped away by darkness, war, and hatred. But years later, during World War II, he discovered a cheesecake recipe in Switzerland. And from that recipe came something sweet. Something lasting. Something that would eventually become cheesecakes shipped to restaurants and stores across America. Inside the factory, Yair works with massive 340-quart mixers, producing cheesecake at a scale most people never see. But the real story is bigger than cheesecake. It’s the story of hidden light coming out of unimaginable darkness. That is Shavuos. A people who stood at Har Sinai and received a Torah that brought light into the world. A holiday of sweetness, creation, and transformation. So when you take that bite of cheesecake this Shavuos, remember: Sometimes the sweetest things in life are born from the darkest places. Thank You Hashem.
