Using Elevators On Shabbat
Rabbi Yaron Reuven explains that using an elevator on Shabbat, while technically allowed with certain restrictions, is strongly discouraged. He argues that even if someone follows all the rules, a non-Jewish observer might see a Jew using an elevator on Shabbat and perceive them as hypocritical or a “faker.” This perception could lead to the observer desecrating HaShem’s name, which is a grave sin. Rabbi Reuven emphasizes that even a small chance of this happening is unacceptable. He warns that those who choose to use elevators on Shabbat risk causing others to sin and ultimately bring about a negative perception of Judaism. He concludes by saying that those who are willing to put their eternal life at risk by using elevators on Shabbat should simply stay home and not observe Shabbat at all.
