Chazaq event with R' Mashiach Kelaty on "Finding Direction in the Modern World"
On Thursday evening, December 24 2015, Rabbi Mashiach Kelaty spoke on behalf of the Chazaq organization at Beit Eliyahu in Fresh Meadows. He focused on how to develop a moral compass in life. He touched on many Torah ideas. In Parshas Vayechi, Yaakov tells his son Yosef to bury him in Israel. Rabbi Kelaty pointed out that the kindness shown to the dead is true kindness as it cannot be repaid. It is of the highest order since it cannot be reciprocated. He then shared an incredible story about a man who asked the Chazon Ish to interpret a recurring dream he was having. The Chazon Ish told him that he had a death sentence hanging over his head but that he was being kept alive by some specific merit. He asked the man what it could be. The man recalled that when he was a young boy his father asked him to go and bury a Jewish boy who had died. The Chazon Ish concluded that this great kindness was the merit that was keeping him alive. Rabbi Kelaty pointed out another lesson from the parshah. It says that Yaakov blessed his grandsons on that day. The fact that it says “that day” teaches us not to delay when we are inspired. We must do a mitzvah right away and act on inspiration right away. Don’t let the inspiration slip away because then you will never act on it, he taught. He also shared the idea that Yosef never actually forgave his brothers verbally, and his brothers never said, “We are sorry.” This caused the great tragedy many years later of the Ten Martyrs we read about on Yom Kippur and on Tish’ah B’Av.
