In 1680 an auto-da-fe was called, bringing Jews and the Inquisition to a public spectacle in the Plaza mayor – the largest square in Madrid. The crime of practicing Judaism, of rejecting the Christian saviour, was the worst crime - a crime so severe that the only remedy was a public execution.
