This means that eating impure food makes us impure, making it difficult to learn Torah, which is pure and spiritual. He emphasizes that if you eat non-kosher food, you might find yourself struggling to stay awake during Torah study because your soul is not pure enough. To ensure the purity of food, HaShem outlines specific guidelines for kosher animals. A kosher animal must have split hooves and chew its cud. There are about ten species of animals that meet both criteria. Any other animal that possesses both these traits would mean an error in the Torah. There are also four animals that possess only one of these signs: the pig, hyrax, rabbit, and camel.
