Reb Shlomo Carlebach ztl For thousands of years, the Jewish people have faced enemies who sought to destroy them. The story of Purim, which took place about 2,500 years ago in the Persian Empire during the reign of Ahasuerus, is one of the most powerful examples of this pattern. An evil man named Haman rose to power and plotted to annihilate the entire Jewish nation — men, women, and children — simply because they were Jews. His decree was legal, organized, and supported by the empire. From a natural perspective, it seemed impossible to escape. Yet his plan was overturned. Our sages teach in the Talmud and Midrash that when Haman once encountered Jewish children returning from their Torah study, he asked them what they had learned that day. One of them answered with the verse: “Take counsel together, but it shall be nullified; speak your word, but it shall not stand, for God is with us.” (Isaiah 8:10). On Purim, this verse is sung with joy — a declaration that no matter how powerful the enemy appears, plans against the Jewish people will ultimately fail because Hashem is with them. Throughout history, this pattern has repeated itself. Empires have risen with the intention of destroying the Jewish people, and yet they are gone, while Am Yisrael remains. Even today, there are regimes that openly invest enormous resources, wealth, and effort in their declared goal of destroying Israel and the Jewish people. They sacrifice their own stability and welfare in pursuit of that objective. But the message of Purim remains the same: hatred and destruction ultimately collapse under the weight of their own evil, while the Jewish people endure. Deep down, history itself testifies — just as one cannot erase the presence of God, one cannot erase the Jewish people. Purim is not just a story of the past. It is a reminder that even when threats appear overwhelming, “their counsel will be nullified… for God is with us.” עוּצוּ עֵצָה וְתֻפָר, דַּבְּרוּ דָבָר וְלֹא יָקוּם — כִּי עִמָּנוּ אֵל.
