"בְּרֶגַע קָטֹן, עֲזַבְתִּיךְ; וּבְרַחֲמִים גְּדֹלִים, אֲקַבְּצֵךְ. בְּשֶׁצֶף קֶצֶף, הִסְתַּרְתִּי פָנַי רֶגַע מִמֵּךְ, וּבְחֶסֶד עוֹלָם, רִחַמְתִּיךְ - אָמַר גֹּאֲלֵךְ, ה'." "For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great compassion will I gather you in. In a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have compassion on you, says the Lord your Redeemer." These words were said by the prophet Isaiah following the destruction of the First Temple. The existence of the Jewish people is dependent on God's will to shine His light on us -- "HaOrat Panim" -- and even a brief moment of "Hester Panim" can bring about a tragedy of the magnitude of the destruction of the Temple. Our generation has had the great fortune of experiencing God's promise of "with great compassion will I gather you in", but only after the previous generation underwent a further period of "in a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment". מילים אלו נאמרו על ידי הנביא ישעיהו לאחר חורבן בית המקדש הראשון. קיומנו כעם הנבחר תלוי ברצון ה' להשפיע עלינו לטוב - בהארת פנים, ואפילו רגע קטון בלבד של הסתרת פנים יכול להוביל לאסון נורא בסדר גודל של חורבן בית המקדש. הדור שלנו - דור התקומה - זכה לראות את הגשמת ההבטחה של "וּבְרַחֲמִים גְּדֹלִים, אֲקַבְּצֵךְ", אך רק לאחר שהדור הקודם עבר תקופה נוספת של "בְּשֶׁצֶף קֶצֶף, הִסְתַּרְתִּי פָנַי רֶגַע מִמֵּךְ"
