David Frankel - Chaplin’s Tunes

Not many people are familiar with the incredible music of Charlie Chaplin. To me, he stands out as one of the greatest composers in history for his natural gift for melody. His free approach, rather than an institutional one, reminds me of my own, and I have always been awed by his art. Because I find his music so valuable, I’ve taken the time to explore his melodies and add my own lyrics to them. Each song was composed for a specific scene in his films, and I’ve written words that reflect the feelings shown in those silent moments. These six songs are taken from his movies The Circus and The Kid, as indicated in the credits. I was blessed to find the gifted Gabriel Yee, who is a natural at music, to accompany me on this project. He added so much colour and brought the songs to life with his violinistic touch — a sound that often reminds me of Chaplin’s own.
