Parashat Shemot: Divine vs Man-Made, Celebrating Secular New Year

Parashah Shemot is filled with many themes that are essential to the Jewish experience as a whole and recounts the first instances of Antisemitism and Jewish persecution and a common collective Jewish identity shaped through that process. It begins with the names of 70 righteous souls that were with Yaakov and included all his children and grandchildren before him. These 70 souls were what would eventually form the complete Jewish nation. The heads of the 12 tribes including Yosef die before the start of the actual slavery in Egypt. And before that they had become very successful and powerful in Egypt. They also had become more populous than their hosts in Mitzrayim as with every birthing a woman gave birth to six children.
