Once Upon A Good Thief...
The story is told of a childless couple who went to a great Rabbi for a blessing. The rabbi informed the couple that if they were to have a child, he would grow up to be a thief. The couple insisted on a blessing, and soon after they had a child. Sure enough, the child grew up and started stealing. Distraught, the couple returned to the Rabbi and asked him what to do. He advised them to meet a wise teacher in another town, and so they did. This teacher saw that the child had a cunning and shrewd nature. He whispered to the child, pointing to a small shack down the road, "There is a very poor family that lives in that house over there. Let's quietly throw some coins through the window in the middle of the night, when no one is watching!" The boy smiled, and agreed to take part in the Rabbi's plot. From then on, the boy stopped stealing and instead used his shrewd character to give tzedaka secretly to all of the poor people in the town. __ This video was produced for Lesson 4 of A Reason to Celebrate, a course by the Rosh Chodesh Society.
