Nostalgia may not be what we think it is... In this talk, I reflect on nostalgia, “the good old days,” and why human beings are so drawn to the past. I begin with a biblical moment in the wilderness, when the children of Israel speak longingly about Egypt, and follow that thread through personal memories, generational nostalgia, and periods of transition… both individual and collective. along the way, I discuss uncertainty, liminal phases of life, survivorship bias, and why certain memories feel calmer and safer than lived experience.
