One of the major mitzvot that people have to really work upon is setting a time for learning Torah, and for beginners it is recommended that they learn the topic of their choice, and in the midst of it hopefully they will be interested in other topics as well. It is our obligation to strive to be like the major talmid chachamim of our generations whether we achieve the end result or not. And the more we are involved in the material world the more difficult it gets to connect with HaShem and learn his Torah. One of the major desires that is universal is the desire for food.
