A 13 year-old boy had just finished his kayaking club in the Kinneret and hopped a metal fence as a shortcut to the boardwalk. Unbeknownst to him municipal workers were in the process of securing some live wires in the area and his jostling of the metal fence caused contact with the electrical wires. The fact that he was barefoot and wet created a perfect storm of factors that led to his electrocution. In his convulsions the young boy's hand closed around part of the fence ensuring complete and continuous flow of deadly electricity. This poor boy's "extreme bad luck" was about to change. United Hatzalah medic Yossi Oknin was on his ambucycle near the boardwalk in Tiberias when the alert came through from the Moskowitz Command Center about a youth who was just electrocuted near the boardwalk. A soldier nearby risked his life to kick the boy's hand free of the electricity. Yossi raced to the scene. Medic Moshe Travelski happened to be not far behind on his ambucycle. The ambucycles had no problem navigating the narrow congested streets leading to the boardwalk nor were they delayed by the barriers leading to the boardwalk. The scene of one and then a second ambucycle racing past startled tourists on the boardwalk was a relief for the concerned soldier and the frightened friends of the electrocuted boy. Yossi quickly commended the soldier for his speedy and appropriate actions and got to work on the boy. He quickly ascertained that the boy was not breathing and was pulseless. Yossi began one-rescuer CPR. As soon as Moshe was on scene they worked like a well oiled team continuing CPR and administeriing lifesaving shocks from the defibrillator from the ambucycle. The ambulance crew parked their rig on the street and carried their equipment to the 2 medics fully invovled in saving the boys life. As they integrated into the efforts with their drugs and equipment the boy began to respond. First his pulse returned then his breathing. Once stable, still unconcsious the boy was evacuated to Poriya Hospital near Tiberias and then transferred to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for the intensive care treatment that he needed. Yossi was curious to know what happened to the young boy but not knowing his name was unable to track down his whereabouts. The Moskowitz LifeCompass worked its wonders yet again. A few days later Yossi responded to a call from the Moskowitz LifeCompass Command Center about a woman who fainted. It seemed to be a routine call and as a matter-of-fact the 40+ year-old single mother declined to be evacuated by ambulance. The woman explained that she hadn't been sleeping much lately because one of her sons is in the hospital and that she was under a lot of stress. She was thankful that after 4 days of being unconscious her son miraculously woke up. Yossi held his breath as he asked her what happened. She told him that her son was on the boardwalk when he was electrocuted. She said that she wanted to thank the medic who saved her sons life but didn't know how to find him. Yossi gently told her that he likewise was trying to close the loop and would love to meet the young boy.
